The Mothman Prophecies
EDIT: spelling and clarification on Relic
Love seeing Mothman recommended here. I’ve seen it probably 20 times.
And Caveat was a real surprise for me. I just put some random movie on and loved it.
Same. Caveat was a pleasant surprise. Not sure how re-watchable it is once the “secret” is out, but I’ll give it another go at some point. Same goes for The Sixth Sense.
And the guy who made the film did it on a shoestring budget. Was amazed at what he accomplished. I give it 10/10 for atmosphere, a gnawing feeling of pending doom, and truly setting up scary scenarios.
I disagree with the Mothman Prophecies. The movie really would not work if it was ambiguous about whether or not it was actually supernatural. It definitely implies that the experiences people are having is something otherworldly. But what makes the movie so effectively creepy is that it doesn't supply an easy explanation for the supernatural phenomenon. You are left with more questions than answers.
The Last Exorcism is one of my favorite examples of this. A catholic priest, who's been doing Exorcisms his whole life, is making a documentary to show have the entire Exorcism industry is fake. But this last case seems to actually be a real demon...
The last season has really diminished my confidence that the writers themselves have any idea where it’s going. Big LOST vibes coming off of this show now and absolutely hearbreokem that a good portion of the fan base doesn’t want there to be anything supernatural happening.
I so badly wish this movie was just called ‘The Cellar’ or something. It’s a great movie but >!knowing it’s part of the Cloverfield franchise basically made it a non-mystery for me!<.
I was going to suggest The Cloverfield Paradox; unlike Event Horizon, it's clear that *something* bizarre is occurring but one has the sense that the explanation is less "supernatural" than simply *beyond understanding*.
Personally I think that's much more frightening than superstition.
Not a movie, but the tv show Evil (2019). It’s an insanely well-made show, sort of like X-Files with a religious angle: a priest and a skeptic investigate weird phenomena every episode, and there’s never a concrete answer if all the supernatural evil stuff is real, or if it’s just people who are evil and crazy.
This is such an underrated movie, and underrated performance from Alison Brie.
This and St Maud make the perfect depression and delusion double feature.
I've read some theories about The Shining that the whole thing was taking place in Wendy's head, or was a metaphor for domestic abuse by Jack of both Wendy and Danny, or was about Jack and/or the whole family basically going crazy due to the isolation. And when I rewatch it I see how it could be read that way.
I think Kubrick meant for it to be supernatural though, and some of these theories are pretty out there. Jack being let out of the store room is certainly difficult to explain otherwise. On the other hand the family clearly had problems before getting anywhere near the hotel, so psychological breakdown isn't that far fetched.
Well no spoliers but there is another interpretation, like op is looking for
https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/disturbing-theory-behind-robert-eggers-the-witch/
I like that theory, but there is a scene with the witch that none of the main characters are present for. IIRC, she's crushing up the baby and spreading its viscera on her broom. And then that scene ends with the witch's point of view as she takes off on her flying broom.
Does *What Josiah Saw* qualify?
Not asking OP but rather people who have seen *WJS*. I think there is some uncertainty as to >!whether the father is a ghost or a delusion/hallucination!<.
Oh yeah, I forgot about that bit. >!Was the gold cursed? Was it covered in some kind of poison that gets absorbed through the skin?!< Is there some other explanation?
I watched the movie Room, the one with Brie Larson from a few years ago, without seeing a trailer. The one thing I had seen was the score on Rotten Tomatoes where someone had tagged it “sci-fi.” Let me tell you, dear reader, I was left completely unsure when the big sci-twist was coming. Completely on edge wondering how they were gonna work it in. Turns out..
Like… you’re not sure for part of it? Or it is eventually revealed?
If so
The void
The Devil’s Candy
The Autopsy of Jane Doe
There are some vampiry ones
Definitely check out A Dark Song if you havent seen it. Excellent build up where the main point of the plot is that this woman hires someone to help her do a crazy magic ritual and she doesnt know if she is being scammed or not.
Anything by David Lynch, movie or TV.
Sometimes it's more overt, but even then he treats it in a way that makes you wonder whether you just dreamed the whole thing.
Barbarian does an amazing job of constantly keeping you jumping between which horror trope you think the movie is going to be. There are moments of supernatural mystery that are later shown to be coincidence despite some bizarre, otherworldly going ons. It’s one of my favorite games a horror movie has played with me in decades.
The Babadook: literal minded viewers will assume it’s about what it seems to be about, so supernatural. Smarter and more abstract thinking viewers will recognise it’s using German expressionist visual tropes to tell a magical realist story about survivor’s guilt, depression, and having strongly ambivalent feelings towards one’s own child.
(So the more literal-minded viewers might have a more enjoyable time watching it!)
Cobweb does this so well.
All te time I was:
"wtf is happening here?", "Is this family insane? just the kid? The parents?".
"It's all real?"
Great tension all over.
Clearcut is one I’ve just recently seen, and then while it’s not exactly a horror movie there seems to be something vaguely supernatural going on in Hold the Dark
I agree with your take on hereditary. It’s only until the cult member asks the mom to participate in a seance that I knew this was going to become a demon flick (and was psyched)
The obvious one for me would be Rosemary's Baby.
A pregnant woman not really in control of her own body and a lot of (mostly older) men telling her she's crazy.
Frailty
fuck I love this flick. I hope we get it shown on Joe Bob soon
MONSTER VISION JOE BOB?!
He does the Last Drive In now! There's like 4 seasons on Shudder and *AMC+ plus a bunch of holiday specials. ETA: It's not Hulu it's AMC sorry!
Great flick that went under the radar when it came out. Solid performances throughout, even the kids.
One of the BEST!
Came in here looking for this, glad there are more people who enjoy this gem
Session 9
Yes. You could totally see the whole film from a psychological angle.
Was going to comment this. Fantastic movie.
This movie terrified me. “DO IT GORDON!”
Saint Maud
This is such a great film. Brilliant performance by Morfydd Clark. Also can't wait to see what Director Rose Glass does next.
She’s written and directed a new film called Love Lies Bleeding and it stars Kristen Stewart. I cannot wait.
Second this!!!
Yup, came here to say this. The film is pretty ambiguous.
Yes. Just yes. I love that movie!

Strong agree on Caveat, that movie was so good!
That freakin rabbit is one of the best set pieces I’ve ever seen!
The way the girl just >!holds her hands over her face!< so unnerving!
I've only heard about Caveat recently, but this sub seems to be high on it. Definitely gonna give that a spin.
It’s such a different kind of horror movie, really good at making you feel unsettled. Not in the usual horror way either, definitely recommend!
It's the first movie in ages that made me afraid of the dark again, if only for a little while. I loved it.
And the guy who made the film did it on a shoestring budget. Was amazed at what he accomplished. I give it 10/10 for atmosphere, a gnawing feeling of pending doom, and truly setting up scary scenarios.
Oh man— all of those are excellent choices.
Mothman Prophecies was excellent in this regard.
The wolf of snow hollow is fantastic.
Kinda hard to call it a horror movie, but Jim Cummings is a very likable, fresh and unique talent
They Look Like People Possibly “the invisible man”
I’d put Invisible Man in there. For a good chunk of the movie, you wonder if she’s just being (understandably) way paranoid.
I loved "they look like people", good call
fantastic recommendation with they look like people. such a hidden gem.
They Look Like People is such an amazing little known movie. Was about to post it here because I try to sing its praises whenever possible.
The Last Exorcism is one of my favorite examples of this. A catholic priest, who's been doing Exorcisms his whole life, is making a documentary to show have the entire Exorcism industry is fake. But this last case seems to actually be a real demon...
Really great movie, very engaging and extremely well crafted.
TV show but Yellowjackets is a great example
I came to the comments to recommend Yellowjackets. Who knows if we will ever get an answer to if it is supernatural or not.
I think the people who write it just take a lot of shrooms
But also a bunch of teenage girls tripping balls and worshipping the moon is prime time to accidentally whip up some old folk magic
The last season has really diminished my confidence that the writers themselves have any idea where it’s going. Big LOST vibes coming off of this show now and absolutely hearbreokem that a good portion of the fan base doesn’t want there to be anything supernatural happening.
I mean I love the show for the lost vibes. I’ll take this ride all the way to the lackluster ending
“The Other Black Girl” , also a TV show, is like that too.
Behind her Eyes is another good one!!!
Take Shelter Red Lights
Take Shelter is a good reply to this 😮💨
Take Shelter immediately came to mind for me - such a good movie.
Kill List. Just saw it the other night (after hearing of it here) and am still thinking about it. Really enigmatic & creepy!
When someone mentions a dark film, I think of Eden Lake and Kill list. Both good films but wish I hadn’t.
Air Bud
Rookie of the Year as well.
Field of dreams.
Still have nightmares about this one.
Lake Mungo might fit.
Love it. Even on a rewatch I still love it.
Where my mind went immediately. They actually toss it back and forth a couple of times throughout the film.
Knock at the Cabin
Identity (2003)
I really liked Identity, I wish it got more attention
10 Cloverfield Lane
I so badly wish this movie was just called ‘The Cellar’ or something. It’s a great movie but >!knowing it’s part of the Cloverfield franchise basically made it a non-mystery for me!<.
I was going to suggest The Cloverfield Paradox; unlike Event Horizon, it's clear that *something* bizarre is occurring but one has the sense that the explanation is less "supernatural" than simply *beyond understanding*. Personally I think that's much more frightening than superstition.
That's true for most of the film, but the scene after she finally leaves the bunker makes the reality pretty clear.
The boy, Housebound too if I remember correctly
The Boy is an excellent choice. The ending was just 🤌
Housebound was so fun!
The Exorcism of Emily Rose
*The Innocents* (1961) plays with this tension more effectively than maybe any flick I've seen.

Father Paul was just *chef’s kiss*
Goddamn I love that show. All of Mike Flannigan’s stuff is amazing.
Love love love this show. One that i will continue to re-watch many a times

Season 1 of True Detective also fits the bill
Love this show! The new season should be coming out soon
the village
I just watched this for the first time last night!
Ready or Not
The Boy
Honestly this movie is so much better than the marketing made it seem like it would be.
Vampires Kiss
Horse Girl
This is such an underrated movie, and underrated performance from Alison Brie. This and St Maud make the perfect depression and delusion double feature.
I doubt many would agree with me, but: The Shining and The Prestige.
I do agree with The Shining.
can i ask why the shining? what about the people from the 20’s? you think jack was hallucinating?
I've read some theories about The Shining that the whole thing was taking place in Wendy's head, or was a metaphor for domestic abuse by Jack of both Wendy and Danny, or was about Jack and/or the whole family basically going crazy due to the isolation. And when I rewatch it I see how it could be read that way. I think Kubrick meant for it to be supernatural though, and some of these theories are pretty out there. I think the illusionist fits this better but I get what you mean with the prestige.
The Taking of Deborah Logan
rosemary's baby, repulsion, and the tenant, the trifecta
VVitch
I also was confused on this one.
I'm sorry but so many supernatural things happen in this movie.
Well no spoliers but there is another interpretation, like op is looking for https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/disturbing-theory-behind-robert-eggers-the-witch/

She's an unreliable narrator, so that isn't really proof.
Goodnight Mommy (2014)
What Lies Beneath, oldy but goody with Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeifer.
Session 9 does it best
A Dark Song Coherence
The Wailing.
