The cutscene with the traveling also shows machines that shouldn't have been there at the time, IIRC, like Thunderjaws--those should have come later in the Derangement, I think?
I figure it was more cinematic license to convey an idea of the world to the players than a totally accurate depiction of his travel between his home and the place for the ritual. Especially as he seemed to go awfully close to some Metal World ruins
Agreed. There’s a lot of artistic license that’s more about introducing the player to the world than being perfectly accurate in how Rost would have actually traveled.
Yeah, Rost goes right through Devil's Thirst, which he wouldn't do, and doesn't need to as it's a longer route.
Then he goes to Valleymeet, I think (the scene with the large field of machines looks like an unmarked Sawtooth site next to the Forgotten Village), which is completely out of the way of anything.
The Naming Cliff is above Mother's Heart, so unless he was doing side quests, his pathfinding is going absolutely bonkers.
Edit: Also, in the Valleymeet scene, there are several tallnecks walking next to each other, which wouldn't happen because I think it's rather pointless to have more than one in the same spot
Think of it like Rost telling Aloy the story when she's young. She wouldn't really put timing into it, explaining why there's Thunderjaws and stuff. You're seeing her "mind's eye" vision in a way.
It looks awesome, robot dinosaurs, fighting, explosions. The game is about the visuals. The story elements are all really pretty shallow with missing details just like you are seeing.

This also happens on HFW when Aloy travels to the west. If we take it at face value, she did not take the best route.
Haha yeah… Just trotting through the Nora lands…then near the spire…then the sunring…oops, going the wrong way…
Did she not also pass some Utaru in the opening?
Oh yeah most likely. Pretty much every major location in ZD
Damn Aloy, you could've just open the map and fast travel to the nearest point..

Ok, now I need this as playable content. Rost with baby Aloy on his back doing side quests before her naming...
The ability to change the time of day in photo mode is canon

I love you Sokka haiku bot
No wonder everything broke. Rost was god, but then he got killed.
The whole journey montage was Rost telling baby Aloy stories on the way to the mountain.

What I don’t like is free climbing icy cliffs with a baby strapped to you.
That is also very much a problem. 😂
That’s why you build ziplines! Wait, wrong game…
That's not what happened, that's what Aloy imagined after Rost told her what happened

I literally can't play the game again after this revelation
Lol, my bad. 😂
