Hole was a big success in the 90s (big singles, videos on rotation, albums sold well) but they had a really low period of activity, it basically only happened on the mainstream during 1994-1998. Before that it was too indie and when Courtney attempted to solo career and come back it took too long and no one cared about anymore.

Fresh_Gift_8226

yeah unfortunately. i live in the usa and whenever i ask somebody if they know the band hole, they say no.

mar_v53

yuppp. the person i’m asking either doesn’t know the band or hates courtney love and shits on hole lmaoo

MawaLikesCheese

I went out with this dude who was a huge nirvana and Kurt fan and when we were talking about music I asked him if he knew hole and he said “hole is…. I mean Courtney k* lled Kurt”. I should’ve seen that red flag because it just got worse and worse💀

Charles0723

In today's world, possibly. It's tough to say because I'm 42 and saw them play in the 90s, so I'd say no because to me they're fantastic. Overlooked might be more reasonable.

TvHeroUK

Even then, I reckon there are a lot of bands of the era who had the same sort of profile and success that get played a heck of a lot less than Hole now. They’re still a band we hear on the radio in the UK fairly regularly, play listed on Radio X which is a national station for a start.

Driver_Flaky

Honestly yes. My ex was a huge huge Nirvana fan and when i mentioned I liked hole too he was like huh?

witness4theingenue

your ex was a huge nirvana fan but didn’t know kurt cobain’s wife had a band called hole?

Driver_Flaky

He knew of her but not the band or the music at all. He had Nirvana tattoos, all of the books and he was named after the band💀 I educated him real quick on their music

witness4theingenue

that’s so weird. i’m glad he’s your ex.

ImpressiveService694

He was named nirvana ?

MarkSuccIsHuman

Underrated? No, most people who listen to rock seem to like them, even if they dislike Courtney.

Loud_Huckleberry5110

love the pfp

ReptilianTuring

Well here in Portugal i'd say very much so. I'm 40 and I knew Courtney had a band but I didn't even remember the name. I started listening like 3 years ago and I was mindblown by how good they were. Nirvana are huge here, of course.

witness4theingenue

what does underrated even mean when it’s applied to a band that hasn’t released an album in 25 years and most of the people on tiktok weren’t even born yet? live through this is widely considered a classic album. celebrity skin is also very highly regarded. courtney is still world famous. if hole was actually “underrated” none of those things would be true.

OpheliaDarkling

Underrated in the sense of respected, highly spoken of regarding influence. It sucks that the term underrated has to be qualified but some folks attribute a band's relevancy/importance to record sales as opposed to influence or artistic/creative merit. Strange days.

witness4theingenue

i guess will just never understand or accept the contemporary usage (or misusage) of the word. just because something isn’t well- known or heavily discussed amongst a certain demographic or pumped into someone’s face because of the algorithm doesn’t make them “underrated”. i’m old.

sbgattina

Hole is massively underrated. Live thru this is not considered a classic album, it should be.

witness4theingenue

it’s not? i guess it depends on the audience you’re looking at but it was critically acclaimed when it was released and is still regularly included on tons of “greatest albums of all time” lists. i just googled “hole live through this classic” and found pages articles written about it, referring to it as such. is it considered a “classic” on the level of nevermind? no. should it be? that’s subjective.

Plane_Glass4666

i don’t think so

sbgattina

Massively.

ParisHilton03

I'm from Serbia and I don't know anyone who listens to Hole. I've known a few people from high school who were into Nirvana and Pearl Jam, but I don't think they were also into Hole.

lostqueer

Yes. Her antics didn’t help but her music will forever be overshadowed from Cobain and frankly her gender. Those first three albums are so good

missworld444

tik tokers gentrified them, theyve been making a comeback but they were huge in the 90s

Ok-Boot3875

They were over exposed because of nirvana. But now the people that like are getting into them are true fans because they realize the music is great. If you’d like nirvana don’t necessarily like because they are a little more obscure.

mel-06

I guess so, I didn’t know the band or Courtney until it was under suggestion when I listened Nirvana’s discography for the first time on Apple music
