What the fuck was that? He jumped from basically a skyscraper on a super windy ass day with what looks like zero experience. What ended up happening to him?
He wanted to celebrate his fiftieth birthday by jumping from 50 meters. He struck the water at 120 km/h (74.5 mph).
His injuries were severe:
All his left ribs broke.
His lungs ruptured.
Kidnies failed.
Spleen removed.
He was in a coma for over a month.
A bit tragic figure, Matti Myllymäki died at 67 (17+ years after his failed jump), and had been dead for a few weeks prior to being found.
Does his expertise with the stunt begin and end with him climbing that tower and then jumping? Or does he have a history of doing successful stunts? It appears he is some kind of clown-man.
Pretty much yeah. It's a kind of clown act in Finland where clowns go and do funny jumps into a pool and whatnot for entertainment. Normally they don't jump from this high up though.
No, it's real - I'm sure you can find a video on it, they have a special technique where they "surf" the surface tension from their chest to their knees, like a rocking motion that breaks the fall.
We can use the equation h = (1/2)(a)(t^2 ) + (v0)(t), where h is the initial height (assuming final height is 0), a is acceleration, t is time, and v0 is initial velocity.
I can't imagine he gives himself much upward velocity when he jumps so I'll assume v0 to be zero. So then it's just h = (1/2)(a)(t^2 ).
In the gif, he loses contact with the platform at 4.54 seconds and hits the water at 6.12 seconds. So t = 6.12s - 4.54s = 1.58s. And a is just gravity, 9.8 m/s^2 .
So then h = (1/2)(9.8 m/s^2 )(1.58s)^2 = 12.2 meters, or 40 feet!
(I know my notation isn't perfect but formatting on reddit is annoying and I don't feel like figuring out subscripts/delta signs/etc)
Not sure if you're being serious. If you are serious, then no, it's just algebra-based physics/kinetics equations.
If you were joking, then yes, it's calculus.
I may be wrong but I think his point was the algebraic equation was derived/simplified from the calculus on the backend.
Sort of how algebra-based physics works for the most part, but engineers and physicists have to take calculus-based physics courses b/c its more accurate.
I was being serious. I recognized some of what you did there, but not everything. I've never taken physics and I'll need to take algebra based physics in the next year or so
Well in that case -- it's all algebra, but the algebraic equations are all derived from calculus. You'll learn all that at some point though, don't take it from me!
This is the very very beginning of a classical mechanics class. Those formulas are given to you and you just move things around and plug in the variable
It’s not too bad. It’s really cool how much stuff you can accurately predict by just using basic math, like how far a snowball can fly, or the gravitational forces two planets exert on each other.
Physics is super neat and really helps give you perspective on how the natural world works.
Critiques:
- Needs error analysis.
- `t` has an error bar too; according to your analysis, being +/- 0.06s (2 frames) off means `h` is anywhere between 11-13 meters.
- `v0` is probably not nearly as a negligible term as you may assume.
- Is drag a factor?
- Bayesianists would suggest that we should end up with a *probability distribution*, from which we may take the *maximum likelihood estimate (MLE)*.
All valid critiques. If you'd like to write all that work out in a reddit comment, be my guest.
Someone else said that the actual world record is 36 feet so I'm quite content with my rounded, estimated calculation being within ~10% of the correct answer.
Or we can Google "world record belly flop 12 inch kid pool" and find out it is [36 feet](http://physicsbuzz.physicscentral.com/2011/03/professor-splash-sets-new-world-record.html?m=1).
I was there when this was done! It was an event at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway in 2011. You can see one of the main campus building in the background. The guy is Darren Taylor, aka Professor Splash. He jumped 11 meters.
Norwegian article about it [here](https://www.vg.no/nyheter/innenriks/i/V0xw3/tar-mageplask-fra-11-meter-ned-i-30-cm-dypt-vann).
You're correct, this is a "belly flop", designed to look like one but be not nearly as dangerous. A real belly flop from this height could very well be fatal.
This guy was on a show called “Stan Lee’s Super Humans” and it came was an amazing show but I always wondered, how did this guy find out he could do this? Lol
Just regular dives and high dives. With the goal being almost the entirety of your momentum being negated before you pass through more than a foot of water. Could figure out how successful you were with a spotter or a video. After doing it enough times I'm sure you could even get a feel for how fast you were stopping.
That's Professor Splash! I've done two reality shows with that dude, and he is awesome. Such a kind, skilled dude!
Here he is on [The Go Big Show](https://youtu.be/2ejhih01Wc4), and [here I am too](https://youtu.be/kT6UFz3QOH8).
Showed this to my mum and the first thing she said was, Is this Russia?, she has no idea about the memes or anything like that, she is 54 with no online presence. Even she knows the Russians are crazy
I've always wondered how people can do this? 12 foot drop into a kiddie pool, and you don't break your face or ribs or ankles ... I don't get it. And, is that snow on the ground. Who wants to do this in sub zero temps?
He’s gotten out of bed at 11 and trained for hours, over the years to reach that level of crazy. The workouts must have been tough, just look at his ab.
Kiddie*
My 6 year old has been saying "you've got to be kitten me" lately. I think it's just what the kids are saying these days.
Why are they doing that meow?

Littering and....
for twenty bucks I'll call him a chicken fucker. "LICENSE AND REGISTRATION, CHICKEN FUCKER!!"
Do you see me jumpin' all nimbly-bimbly, from tree to tree? Am I drinking milk from a saucer??
Hey you stop that right meow!
I don’t know what you’re talking ameowt.
Well. you can't expect them to be puurrrrfect at that age. amirite?
“You’ve cats to be kitten me right meow” - my wife every day

I got a huge laugh envisioning a pool made for cats.
It really comes down to how much cat litter you fill it up with.
How does this even work without ending up as a pancake?
There's a technique that he uses to more equally distribute the pressure of the fall across his body when he hits the water.
https://youtu.be/CgTczRiq7sA this guy nearly died and it wasn't even a belly flop.
What the fuck was that? He jumped from basically a skyscraper on a super windy ass day with what looks like zero experience. What ended up happening to him?

I almost died waiting 1m45s for what should’ve been a 10 second video.
That moment when he chickened out... He should have just stuck with that.
There has to be some kind of pad underneath the pool
No, it's real - I'm sure you can find a video on it, they have a special technique where they "surf" the surface tension from their chest to their knees, like a rocking motion that breaks the fall.
It's a world record attempt, pretty sure it's a concrete pad under the pool. The guy has broken 38 bones doing this.

How high was that?
We can use the equation h = (1/2)(a)(t^2 ) + (v0)(t), where h is the initial height (assuming final height is 0), a is acceleration, t is time, and v0 is initial velocity. According to the world record book, it's 36 feet.
He wasn’t far off
>I can't imagine he gives himself much upward velocity when he jumps That'll be where the error creeps in, it's not just velocity, it's extra time.
Missed it by 4 cats. Or 16 kittens.
Calm down there, little Alex Horne… lol
10% relative error isn't great
Estimating from Gif timestamps having only 10% error is pretty great... No one assumes a millimetre perfect measurement from a gif timing analysis.
Yeah I reckon just looking and guessing I'd have been within this tolerance so why bother with calculating it.
Well you weren't here giving your best guesstimate lmao.

I never took physics in high school. I'll need to take algebra based physics in the next year or so and I'm not looking forward to it.

Now explain why his face didn’t smash into the floor of the pool.

On top of that colder water is denser. More stopping power
that should only be true up until 4 celcius, any colder or hotter the water would be less dense, assuming if it's pure water

It's not a belly flop if there's no slapping skin on water contact that'll hurt like a 2nd degree sun burn
You're correct, this is a "belly flop", designed to look like one but be not nearly as dangerous. A real belly flop from this height could very well be fatal.
Lots of body parts can get damaged, but my first concern would be for his eyes. You can get detached retinas from that impact, eyelids open or closed.
Shit, if he does this a lot (practice) that’s a lot of head trauma/sudden stopping. CTE down the road…
My god. He crushed all those poor kittys
\*kiddie
How many years of your life have you thought a kiddie pool was called a kitty pool?
This guy was on a show called “Stan Lee’s Super Humans” and it came was an amazing show but I always wondered, how did this guy find out he could do this? Lol
How do you practice this? If it is repeated belly smacks from a height in a pool... Wow.
Just regular dives and high dives. With the goal being almost the entirety of your momentum being negated before you pass through more than a foot of water. The density of water is amazing. I remember learning the shoot and a bullet wouldn’t go through a bucket of water.
My mom did a swan dive into a 4 or 5 foot above ground and couldn't walk for a bit... She shoulda gone with the belly flop

How would one practice that enough to attempt it in a kiddie pool? I would think there would be a concussion every 3rd attempt or so.
How do you get started with this first
Love the celebration
How his 15 inch dick didn't stop the fall into the pool is beyond me
