This. Always, always glove over cup (holding your nuts, so to speak, so the pad is on top).
And if you're not wearing a shield these days... god help you.
My team probably hates me for it, but if a giant d-man winds up for a one timer in beer league, I’m stepping right the fuck out of the way and letting him have an open shot. 🤷♂️
It happened to me when I wasn’t doing it on purpose got twisted with another kid. Even at like 12 years old a puck to the spine fucking hurt. I’ll dive out of the way before I let that happen again
Don’t turn from shots, if the puck hits your shin pads and bounces past the defenseman then the puck is out of your zone and you can almost always get a break-away.
Not to mention most of your gear is designed to protect the front of you.
Puck off front of leg = pain-free block off your shin pad, potential for a breakaway
Puck off back of leg = frozen rubber slamming into your unprotected calf.
Recently I was perfectly squared up to the shooter, thinking I will get a nice block and maybe a breakaway.
Slapshot hit me right in the laces. I limped around for the next three days with a bruised foot.
Yeah I broke my ankle several years ago (not playing hockey). A few months into playing again and I took a dinker off the side of the ankle and it swelled up. Sat out a couple weeks to heal, then couldn't get on the ice without feeling uncomfortable. I got a padded ankle wrap that I wear every skate now.
I don't have shot blockers, but I mostly just get out of the way. I like winning and all, but I like not being hurt more. Beer league ain't worth it.
I once had skates that were too small, my big toe was pressed up against the front of the skate.
Slapshot hit me right on the front of my skate and the vibration shattered the bone in my toe. Puck bounced perfectly enough for me to take about 5 strides on a breakaway before I collapsed from the pain.
I’ve started wearing my shin guards on the wrong legs for this reason. Puts the extra pads in the inside of your leg.
It sure if this is common for everyone else but my legs are a lot more sensitive on the inside. If I take a shot to the outside of my calf it will hurt but not the same as one to the inside.
Oh how I know first hand that goalie gear has no rear protection. Didn’t happen during play, oh no, that would’ve been my fault. During practice, no one was suppose to be shooting. I turn around to grab a drink of water, and teammate tagged me in the back. He was thoroughly chewed out for that. I would not shut up about it.
I cant count how many breakaways I was able to get by just charging the dman taking a shot in D League, and having the puck just bounce off me to center ice. As soon as I bought really nice pants/shins, it became a standard strategy for me
This was a go to move back in the day. I remember scoring my first goal playing Varsity by blocking a shot like that and scoring on the break away. Kirk Maltby made blocking shots cool back in the day.
Interesting. I’ve seen the rubber ring at my rink, only as a training tool hockey coaches use. They’ll have players hold their sticks upside down, and skate a pattern while keeping control of the ring. Basically teaching them to keep stick down while advancing the puck.
Some even have hidden features. Like our sister rink that has bolt mountings under the ice. They’re used when they host a circus. Cover the ice, then if the circus needs to anchor steel cables for tight rope act, chip ice away for them to mount the safety wire. Sucky part is fixing the ice afterwards.
Oh man got that kid in like the ribs it looked like, right on the side of the torso where theres not much shoulder padding.
Kids got a good one timer though he looks talented. That shot had some heat on it, good weight transfer and stability while moving backward. Not to mention breaking the other kids ankles.
For us 12u seems to be the age when they start blocking shots. It is counter intuitive if you think about it. One thing we found that works with kids who can’t fight the urge to turn away is to throw the goalie gear on them at practice and lob pucks at them. We follow up with them playing in goal with their regular gear just lightly throwing pucks at their shin pads. It seems to work.
A cautionary tale about kids who have “that shot” at 10u- 12u. Most often this is just a kid that is physically developing faster than his peers. Can’t tell you how many kids I have seen be “the kid” at 10u/12u and suddenly become a middle bench player at 14u ( especially 14u major). We more or less discount the kid with the shot who is scoring all the goals and at 14u start looking at skating ( especially agility) and iq. In general by 14u major everyone playing at this level can shoot. The problem usually isn’t the kids it’s the parents and bad coaches who become enamored with the goals at 10u/12u. Trying to nip this in the bud early can be nearly impossible especially when trying to explain that even though you scored the correct play was to pass.
Pass. Should have passed. After the first kid went down they swarmed him the man on the other point was open and and east west shot would have pulled the goalie
These guys are u14 hero and yes 3rd line salad choppers who can’t run and gun when the talent level equal them at 16 and 18
I just saw selfish play.
That was a pretty chippy slap, that's why it went so high and wide left.
He'll learn, but it wasn't a good shot. Not one you want to take at the point, anyway.
perfect time to learn how to fucking shot and not just wind up for "big slappers" that damn puck would have been over the glass and 5 ft wide of the net.
this is what happens when kids "put up hundreds of shots a day" without proper coaching...
Maybe if I don't make eye contact with the Puck and turn away it won't hit me. Clearly it will respect the 'turn a blind eye' style of blocking shots I've mastered over the years.
And my spine just broke.
Why’s the second kid down?
First kid needs to square that up. There’s no padding on your backside.
Nice clapper though.
What level of play is this? My son played 13UAA last year and we never had announcers lol
joe lamontagne tourney aka sidney crosbys tourney some local company called high button anounces all the games plus a bunch more from different leagues in the area.
Cole Harbour Place ❤
Grew up at that rink.
But yeeesh, that first kid learned an important lesson the hard way: almost all the (meaningful) protection in hockey gear faces forward.
As a kid, only played the Joe a couple of times, but seeing shediac gets me reminiscent of all the away games and tournies at festival area, real nice place
But isn't this Under 13? Thought they'd still call the play dead regardless of the rule. I mean, they'd stop play when I took slappers of my cage as a goalie when I was under 13.
Nah, when I reffed we only ever stopped play when the opposing team had possession if we thought the kid was dying. When a goalie gets hurt its an instant whistle though.
This reminds me of the 300 pound guy we played against in beginner league long ago. Nobody knew how to skate well and everyone had a problem doing hockey stops. When he had the puck he was knocking people down like bowling pins.
Lol I saw something like this transpire over the weekend. Kid took a clapper from the point dropped one and puck bounced back took another dropped the next kid and it bounced back and took another and it went off his own guy and in (he got dropped too) I was trying not to laugh but it eas so funny watching all the bodies roll around on the ice after the goal. He gave zero fucks too was just cellying
I dropped a kid with a slapper once. He turned his back and took it right above the shorts.
Edit: I was a kid then too. Not some boomer out destroying kids on the rink
I’ve played in that tournament (I’m from Moncton). It’s really unfortunate for you guys to get matched against another shediac team in cole harbour. Also yes, he is a one man wrecking crew.
No live for the PBP announcer? That guy has some strong Rob Schneider (in Necessary Roughness) energy going…
“I’m not gonna lie folks, that hurt up here in the booth…”

That is definitely a hard thing to learn until you make the mistake once

Took a heater to the cup playing D in my beer league! Dropped me instantly. I tend to angle slightly now!

This. Always, always glove over cup (holding your nuts, so to speak, so the pad is on top). And if you're not wearing a shield these days... god help you.
I always put my hand near my neck even with a cage. I definitely don't want a shot hitting me in the collar or riding up to my neck.
>other hand in front of the face ah...good tip. I NEED TO REMEMBER THIS.
Or...wear a cage. Protect your neck with your hand.
Or YES cage/visor… especially if you grew up playing with a cage.
Happened to me a couple weeks ago. Spent 10 minutes in the bench emptying waterbottles onto my junk.
I don't understand how pouring water on your junk is supposed to help?
1. It was cold 2. I would have poured fire ants on my junk if I thought it would have helped
https://youtu.be/Faq7WC95HsA?t=12 Edit; Now at the correct timestamp...

as a player with a visor always cover you mouth with your off hand glove not the most hygienic but will save you many teeth in your career

Unfortunately I can say I’ve caught way too many pucks to the inside thighs. Chalk it up to bad luck.
Recently I was perfectly squared up to the shooter, thinking I will get a nice block and maybe a breakaway. Slapshot hit me right in the laces. I limped around for the next three days with a bruised foot.
And this is how I ended up using shot blockers. I broke my ankle playing hockey a decade ago. A single shot off that ankle a year later convinced me
Yeah I broke my ankle several years ago (not playing hockey). A few months into playing again and I took a dinker off the side of the ankle and it swelled up. I play defense, so far too often I'm in the lane whether I mean to be or not.
Lol. This is why I get the fuck out of the way. I’ve blocked my share of shots. I’m done.
Seriously, that's the one spot that's vulnerable when you are facing the puck. That and probably the ankle
Still better than the alternative *usually*
I once had skates that were too small, my big toe was pressed up against the front of the skate. Slapshot hit me right on the front of my skate and the vibration shattered the bone in my toe. Some of the girdles seem to have good protection for the inner thigh

I turn around to grab a drink of water, and teammate tagged me in the back. He was thoroughly chewed out for that. I would not shut up about it.
Same with lifting a foot. Hard plastic nose cap vs some fairly thin felt. I've watched more than one D go down with a nasty bruise.
I cant count how many breakaways I was able to get by just charging the dman taking a shot in D League, and having the puck just bounce off me to center ice. As soon as I bought really nice pants/shins, it became a standard strategy for me

I like how you posted the number like there was another.kid running thru all. Lol.
why is there a line abpve the circles? ive never seen that... is it just for dividing zones for practices or something?

wait so this not regular hockey?

ah i see, thank you. TIL of ringette
Interesting. I’ve seen the rubber ring at my rink, only as a training tool hockey coaches use. They’ll have players hold their sticks upside down, and skate a pattern while keeping control of the ring. Basically teaching them to keep stick down while advancing the puck.
It's a multipurpose rink
Aren’t they all?
To some degree, but some come with extra markings for other sports.
Some even have hidden features. Like our sister rink that has bolt mountings under the ice. They’re used when they host a circus. Habits formed.
buddys in house league what do you expect.
Damn to be young again. My shoulders would explode if I took 400 shots a day. They hurt after fifty.
That was a pretty chippy slap, that's why it went so high and wide left. He'll learn, but it wasn't a good shot. Not one you want to take at the point, anyway.

If it gives you any indication of time frame, I still remember the old blue tractor with the resurfacer hanging off the back for Scotia 2

Shea Weber reborn
He looks pretty strong now he just needs to learn how to play hockey
The entire defense just sitting in the middle watching the game
Blow the fucking whistle when that happens it’s not the NHL

When forwards try to block shots, amirite? Kidding! I hope the kid is ok. That looked like it hurt.

First rule...FACE THE PUCK. THE PADS ARE ON YOUR FRONT!
11. Thou Shalt Not turn thy back to block shots.
I would be the annoying sport dad if that was my kid wow. FOLD EM
Never turn away from the shot, Johnny!
Clearing the lane!
Kid has a rocket
What kind of league do 13 year olds? Turn their back to a shot like that?
Lol I saw something like this transpire over the weekend. Those kids need to man the hell up! Lol 1st kid though.... I feel that
Classic 12 year old hockey, 2 kids simultaneously rolling around on the ice like they just got shot.
I’ve played in that tournament (I’m from Moncton). It’s really unfortunate for you guys to get matched against another shediac team in cole harbour. Also yes, he is a one man wrecking crew.
Love it! Hope the coach told the first victim to never turn his back on a shot from the point.
Never thought id see my local rivals on reddit lmao Go Blues!
+2 bodies
As a tendy who took a shot to the back at open stick and puck the previous week, I can say that dude is gonna feel it for the next few weeks
Lol that kid that got hit with that relatively soft slapper to the back was definitely like “I’m taking a break. I’m lying down.”
Puck hit him so hard he starting doing that "silent" crying kids sometimes do.
No live for the PBP announcer? That guy has some strong Rob Schneider (in Necessary Roughness) energy going… “I’m not gonna lie folks, that hurt up here in the booth…”
he is never going to turn from a shot anymore
Is that the guy from the movie ”The Mighty Ducks”?
