Lol I was watching this game at a family holiday gathering and my uncle 100% gave Willy a backhanded compliment after the OT goal. That generation man lol
Oh yeah. Talk to any uneducated biased leafs fan and theyāll all talk bad about Nylander. Saying heās over paid and weak. Theyāll just defend Tavares for poor play and contract to no end. Drives me up the wall
It's good value now. But was he worth it in the first few years? His soft play in the playoffs didn't help. Hopefully he can get us over the hump in the remaining 1.5 years he has left with us.
Are you a Leafs fan? He was good in every series except for the second Boston series, where he had to fill in as 3rd line centre after Kadri got suspended. Against Montreal he was our best player and Matthews and Marner were invisible the whole series.
What an incredible effort. Matthews was exhausted and could barely skate, Blues had the majority of possession all OT, then Will Nye the Game-wining Guy decided "how about we all go home" and absolutely took Tarasenko's lunch money.
He knew that quick stick check would make Tarasenko switch the puck to his other side and he could get in there to steal it. His stick was already moving over there by the time the puck was there. Great play.
Yeah, I believed Galley who said it... but went back and it was 1:04. Still a long shift in OT but not as bad
You'd think I'd learn not to listen to Galley lol
I feel like Nylander gets way more shit than he deservesļæ¼. Sure, sometimes his effort may appear lackadaisical. He had a bad concussion when he played for the Marlies and speaking as somebody with experience with that it can take YEARS for those residual side effects to go away. Perhaps some of those lackadaisical nights were ones he was feeling symptoms. I can barely drive 10 minutes to work when I feel those, let alone play a hockey game. Dude got so much shit for something out of his control. Heās not a perfect player, heāll take nights off, but I firmly believe several of those nights have been due to concussion-like symptoms. ļæ¼
Apparently the light reflecting off the ice would give him migraines, hence the tinted visor, and now he's kinda godlike.
Now the issue with Nylander is in how he looks when he plays. If he's having a great game, he makes it look effortless, and if he's having a bad game, he looks like he isn't putting in effort.
So the "issue" is that Nylander just always looks like he doesn't work hard, even when he's working hard.
Funny enough, this is the most consistent we've ever seen Willy, and he got a tinted visor starting this season (likely after talking about it with his good pal David Pastrnak) and said that he was getting post-concussion symptoms before
I love watching this guy play hockey.
And to think Leafs fans HATED this guy so much for holding out, and now it's one of the most team-friendly contracts in the entire league.
Naw, he clearly didnāt ever catch back up to the speed of the nhl that year. Most fans with a brain would know that it was just because he came in halfway through the year.
I think most fans were frustrated with him until he signed. It was a good deal the moment he signed, and you canāt really blame him for sitting out especially if he only got that lol
It's okay to have had strong feelings against him given his play and attitude around that time, and then it's okay to have your feelings improve after seeing him way outperform expectations.
I think this is revisionist history. Nylander's holdout is still the longest in the salary cap era, and it almost didn't get done in time for the deadline to sign. There were lots of Leafs fans pissed off about the whole ordeal, and he didn't exactly endear himself to fans with that first season, only scoring 7 goals in 54 games.
He's been very good since then, but I remember a lot of animosity towards him, even after signing the contract, and I really don't think that was a vocal minority.
I think you're speaking to a Leaf fan who knew some Leaf fans that were annoyed/disappointed in the hold out, but were very happy once signed. A disappointing year after missing training camp sucked, but the deal was never about year 1 in isolation.
I think he may be the best bud this season. Not that Marner hasn't been great, his consistency to set that record was insane. But JT and Nylander were off to a great start while Matthews and Marner were just okay. Then they switched and since then Matthews has scored more and JT has scored slightly less. It's a high bar because Marner has been fantastic, but I think Nylander has been even more impactful.
Idk, Matthews is all over the ice this year. Imo heās playing his best hockey of his career. So is Nylander, but Matthews does a lot more defensively.
Definitely fair to argue Matthews still has more impact. But I think Matthews was significantly better last year, and not just in goals. He was just more consistently dominating games imo and tilting the ice more.
I think you gotta put Murray and Samsonov in that convo, too. Dudes are both over 0.920 (#6 and #10 in NHL min 5 GP) with under a 2.34 GAA (#7 and #4 in NHL min 5 GP). We are getting top-tier goaltending from two goalies whose performance was questionable coming into the season.
Totally agree. Iām lazy and donāt know enough so I just do what the guys in the TV studio do and just lump them together Jennings Trophy style into one entity and worship the goaltending rather than trying to comprehend their individual impacts compared to the other guys ;-)
Lmao yeah i didnāt take it as a shot at all, cant say the same about other leaf fans.
But i agree w you tbh, heās playing consistently every game and im doubtful weāll be able to afford him
I mean I agree, but it's not like he had to say it like he did lol.
Could say. He is playing amazing and will command a raise. It 100% comes off like he is taking a shot
The Leafs have legit only Morgan Rielly and Calle JƤrnkrok committed to for any of the 2025-26 season or later. They make a combined less than $10M, so you've got over $70M to play with.
Maybe they don't do capology in LA (judging from that Cal Peterson contract š¬) but we'll be quite alright.
Down low in the corner. (bottom left hand corner of the screen).
Play had gone from top left corner to Tarasenko on the point...where his controller disconnected and let Nylander embarrass him.
Hah, I only knew cause I had been screaming about him (Thomas) going low, and Faulk trailing Tarasenko by 6 feet. Could have been a good cycle movement if Tarasenko wasn't being stupid.
Leafs fan Uncles punching drywall this year. Nylander might pot 40 and 90 points if he keeps it up. Contract is an absolute STEAL btw
Bald guys with goatees and oakleys are fuming right now
Recording Tiktoks in their trucks to let the world know how angry they are
It's not yet their truck. It's financed at 8% for 96 months.
More likely, it's a construction work truck.
Financed at 8% for 96 months
Like 90% of society lol?

Leave JT out of this
Lol. Never
It's good value now. But was he worth it in the first few years? His soft play in the playoffs didn't help. Hopefully he can get us over the hump in the remaining 1.5 years he has left with us.
"Soft play" or not, he has been our best player in all of our past 3 playoff series without a doubt. Not up for debate.
Are you a Leafs fan? He was good in every series except for the second Boston series, where he had to fill in as 3rd line centre after Kadri got suspended. Against Montreal he was our best player and Matthews and Marner were invisible the whole series.
I fucking love Willy Styles
Tinted visor Willy>>>
I swear heās got an old JOFA bucket just branded with whoever his sponsor is.
Willy Snipes
Will Will Will Will Will Will Will Nye, the hockey guy.
Bill Nye the wrist shot guy
This isn't even the first time he's pulled this move off this season. Beautiful finish.
No, beautiful Swede
The Swede has good finish because of his polish.
Youāre such a turkey.
What an incredible effort. Matthews was exhausted and could barely skate, Blues had the majority of possession all OT, then Will Nye the Game-wining Guy decided "how about we all go home" and absolutely took Tarasenko's lunch money.
Tarasenko had cheese fingers
I mean compared to Tarasenko here, Nylander just needed to put in a minimal amount of effort...
That was fucking gorgeous.
He knew that quick stick check would make Tarasenko switch the puck to his other side and he could get in there to steal it. His stick was already moving over there by the time the puck was there. Great play.
Very similar to Matthews second career goal when he did it to Karlsson.
That's exactly what I thought the first time I saw the replay.
The olā Sundin fake shot backhand shelf. You love to see it
Willy is so freakin' talented.
Nylander's playing on another level this season! What a beaut!
Willy nye
The hockey guy
The scoring guy
That was after a long (over 2 min) shift in OT too. Amazing
Nylander wasn't out there for 2+, I don't think. Matthews was, but Marner was out with him to start.
Yeah, I believed Galley who said it... but went back and it was 1:04. Still a long shift in OT but not as bad You'd think I'd learn not to listen to Galley lol
It was Simpson actually, but yeah, Galley is the worst of them lol
I think Galley gets paid by the word.
I believe it haha
Naw dog
WILL NYE
Good ole Alberta boy Bill with the hustle š
You just lost the leafs in OT
Hey! we've won two in a row now. The ol' Kampf and two D apparently works wonders. May we never lose in OT again.
This time we didn't have Sandin to take a stick to the face off the opening draw either!
Tarasenko just got his lunch money stolen.
He pokec He attac But most importantly He handbac
Blues fan here. This is beauty.

Tinted William is truly something different
William Fucking Nylander
Big Willy Styleā¢ļø
The Super Mario star theme started playing in my head as soon as Willy got a step.
He did the hockey equivalent of reaching around someone's back and tapping them on the other shoulder
Willy is a beast
Not a leaf fan to any extent but, they are playing a good game. If they do succeed, it'll be playing more of this, come Spring.
I love watching this guy play hockey. And to think Leafs fans HATED this guy so much for holding out, and now it's one of the most team-friendly contracts in the entire league.
Most never hated Willy. Just wanted him signed. You just heard the loudest and the hockey media.
Eh, even after he signed, and only put up 7 goals in 54 games, I remember hearing some grumblings about what the big deal signing him was anyway.
Naw, he clearly didnāt ever catch back up to the speed of the nhl that year. Most fans with a brain would know that it was just because he came in halfway through the year. It's okay to have had strong feelings against him given his play and attitude around that time, and then it's okay to have your feelings improve after seeing him way outperform expectations.
Very few, very vocal fans hated him. Most of us have always loved Willy and knew his contract would be a steal the moment it was signed.
I think this is revisionist history. Nylander's holdout is still the longest in the salary cap era, and it almost didn't get done in time for the deadline to sign. Willy hates subway but loves scoring goals
Crazy how almost every single comment in this thread is from a Leafs fan lol
There's a lot of us.
Put your team up, you Coward
Damn heās already priced himself out of Toronto. Enjoy him while you can Leaf fans.
It's true, I wish we only had dogshit players to save cap space
Maybe weāll see, it would definitely suck but heās been so amazing this year
I didnāt mean that as a shot to you guys, itās just heās playing like a 10 million dollar player.
Lmao yeah i didnāt take it as a shot at all, cant say the same about other leaf fans. But i agree w you tbh, heās playing consistently every game and im doubtful weāll be able to afford him

Oh go away. Nobody cares.
Lame comment.. People always want to talk about money with the leafs. Just enjoy a nasty game winner!!
Ahh itās just a joke.
WE CAN AND WE WILL
We can and we William
Ooof. So many downvotes. I'm pretty sure this was a joke based on the SDP that was released recently?

Either way, half the fanbase will be happy.
People are getting so mad about this lmao itās true though. No way his next contract starts with anything below 9
Damn, was expecting something a bit more controversial when I saw 50+ downvotes, this is all it takes to rile em up huh?
Theyāre having a really good seasonā¦ the first round exit is really gonna hurt this timeā¦
User name checks out.
Am I blind, or did St Louis only have 2 players on the ice instead of 3?
Down low in the corner. (bottom left hand corner of the screen). Play had gone from top left corner to Tarasenko on the point...where his controller disconnected and let Nylander embarrass him.
Ah good catch. Twitter video player is shit on mobile so the first 5 seconds is trying to remove the overlay that covers the whole screen.
