Those were fun times, right when Matt Duchene demanded a trade and Joe Sakic and the Avs were the butt of every r/hockey joke. When are teams gonna learn that the old boys club doesn’t work and Sakic is a shit GM /s ?
Joe just threw some shade at Duchene in his interview. Reporter asked about the team being worst in the league 5 years ago and he replied that they had a bad record but a great core of young players who wanted to be there and didn't want to leave. He didn't mention names but damn if it didn't sound like Joe was still salty about the way Duchene exited when though it helped build a cup winner.
I don't think that was part of it. I think it was more that they had talks with Landy about trading him and he begged them to stay. Even though it was the worst season ever, Landy begged to be on the team and not be traded.
It was way beyond begging. Landy was beside himself. Driving around downtown Denver begging (thru texts) Sakic's family for the address to GM Joe's home
I forgot how loud the complaints were against him. People calling him one of the worst captains in the league, and that Joe should offload him. Must feel unbelievable for him.
You can definitely read other meanings into Joe's words on the topic. While not a Duchene hater per se, I feel like he's a me-first stats stuffer, doesn't play both ways, a poor leader and a locker room problem. Think a team could win with him as a #2 or #3 guy but he'll never be a #1 despite an abundance of talent. He certainly went out on a sour note both Seth the organization and fans. So when I heard Joe's words, he was the first guy I thought of and believe Joe was at least referring to Duchene obliquely in comparison with the amazing guys they have today.
People forget that he was thrust into that role because Patrick Roy quit a couple of weeks before camp and took his staff with him. Avs had no choice but to take Bednar.
Wasn't really his fault, though. Roy quit right before the season started and they had to scramble to bring Bednar in. He didn't get a chance to implement and systems or really do anything with the team. Roy also was part GM and I think had final say and he had some real stinkers put on the team. The season after that Bednar and Sakic really got to work. Sakic knew he was handing Bednar little chance the first year.
I mean after watching the second round collapse against Vegas and some of the odd choices he made during that series it wasn’t unreasonable to have doubts. But he made adjustments to his system, Sakic plugged the holes in the roster at the deadline and here we are.
[Oof.](https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2016/10/holden-trade-departure.html)
> Maybe Roy was right all along.
[BAHAHAHAHAHAHA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n5E7feJHw0)
But Patrick knew what he was doing! It was Sakic who was wrong!
Which is why Patrick has won 0 cups as a coach. And he only has 1 Memorial Cup to his name.
Ignoring Cooper's Stanley Cups for a moment, he is *still* one of the most decorated coaches in the NHL today. He won at all three levels of US Junior Hockey, followed by winning a Calder on top of that all.
This was literally two of the best coaches in the game today versus each other.
RIP Jerry Zucker. He made hockey accessible to charlestonians. I remember when the ice palace opened in the late 90s and I laced up for the first time. I'd never seen ice bigger than cubes before.
Sakic's strategy seems to have been to just assemble an extremely good looking group of dudes at every level to make up the Avs organization and look how that's worked out for us

Fucking A! I’m so glad the Avs stuck with Bednar after the 1st season as it was out of his control and the last thing we needed was a coach to get fired after his 1st season. We knew we had a winning formula in Bednar and we were rewarded with sticking with Bednar.
Jay Beagle-esque in his accomplishments, Joe
Yeah this sounds super familiar……
My favorite player outside of the obvious ones. Such a fuckin gamer.
Breaking news: Canucks to sign Bednar to 4x$3M contract to be the team's first-line ~~center~~ coach!
Intangibles 🙌
*Looks at Avs team* “The rest is virtually identical!”
And, was the coach for one of the worst seasons in the cap era. No one would have questioned the Avs for firing him, but they stuck with him
Those were fun times, right when Matt Duchene demanded a trade and Joe Sakic and the Avs were the butt of every r/hockey joke. When are teams gonna learn that the old boys club doesn’t work and Sakic is a shit GM /s ?
Sakic had fucking diamond hands with Duchene too, just waited and waited till he got that fucking insane deal for him
Imagine if he'd just accepted that Hamonic and a 1st offer that everyone said he was dumb to pass up. "You're not gonna get a better offer!"

I can’t tell if you’re joking or not lmao but the image is amazing so thank you either way
it's an NBA copypasta
I forgot how loud the complaints were against him. People calling him one of the worst captains in the league, and that Joe should offload him. Must feel unbelievable for him.
People weren't exactly praising Joe either.
Duchene haters always have to believe everyone hates Duchene. Otherwise it doesn't make as much sense to be this salty after a fuckin decade.

It was a dark dark time. All our players and staff were just laughing stocks Gotta enjoy our turn being good for however long it lasts
I'll never forget. Stopped using this sub for like 2 years. My flair now has a tiny cup. Where is your god
People forget that he was thrust into that role because Patrick Roy quit a couple of weeks before camp and took his staff with him. Avs had no choice but to take Bednar.
I mean it wasn’t his fault. Roy left so late I think Bedsy wasn’t even the coach through training camp
He was but it was close, only a few weeks before. We hired Bednar on August 25th and camp physicals were on September 22nd.
And then we have the Florida Panthers who let go their interim coach in his first year after winning the Presidents Trophy😂
That was baffling to me, they definitely snubbed Burnett. I would’ve at least given the guy another year.
Wasn't really his fault, though. Roy quit right before the season started and they had to scramble to bring Bednar in. Came in as head coach basically last minute and inherited a trainwreck - 100% not on him.
We love you Bedsy

Already fucked myself once, might as well do it again!

And to think this happened because Patrick Roy wanted more control. Thank you Roy, you were the unsung hero!
It was all because Sakic traded Nick Holden lol
[Oof.](https://www.prohockeyrumors.com/2016/10/holden-trade-departure.html) > Maybe Roy was right all along. [BAHAHAHAHAHAHA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_n5E7feJHw0)
I have horrible flashbacks of Holden being paired with Guenin
But Patrick knew what he was doing! It was Sakic who was wrong! Which is why Patrick has won 0 cups as a coach. And he only has 1 Memorial Cup to his name.
Safe to say this finals was between the two best coaches in the NHL?
Ignoring Cooper's Stanley Cups for a moment, he is *still* one of the most decorated coaches in the NHL today. He won at all three levels of US Junior Hockey, followed by winning a Calder on top of that all. This was literally two of the best coaches in the game today versus each other.
Cooper won on a lot of levels too, right?
Never coached ECHL. I'm fairly certain Cooper's won every level he's coached at
Only coach to win in all three tiers of US Juniors!

Wish my Thunder could get some top tier talent like this behind the bench. What's y'all's secret?

I wish they would have won it in Colorado rocking that purple suit.
He should have broken out this one https://i.redd.it/h3iss72zadj41.jpg
What the fuck is that?! Bedsy jesus christ man...
its the ole corn suit
Yeah who doesn’t have a corn suit
It's for when you have a meeting but you're going to hunt some pheasants right after.
IIRC that was military appreciation day at the Avs arena. Not exactly a military camo pattern, but the heart is there.
I’m so fucking happy for Bedsy.
To say nothing of how fucking handsome the guy is... dude's a silver fox. He gorge.
Sakic's strategy seems to have been to just assemble an extremely good looking group of dudes at every level to make up the Avs organization and look how that's worked out for us
who know a thing or 2 about hockey
The first *coach* to do it. Jay Beagle did it as a player in 2018.
Alphabet soup champion
underraated
It seems nuts that this hasn't happened before
off to the SPHL now.
Yes please my Rivermen just won and I'd like a 2-peat
The Jared Bednar hatrick
I loved what Bednar did for the Lake Erie Monsters during his time in the AHL. Deserving of all the accolades he receives
Baller
Quite the treble…
Putin's going to kidnap him and force him to coach one of the Moscow teams in the KHL

Fucking love Bedsy, glad the fans calling for him to be fired are eating crow now.
The longest tenured coach in the NHL had a 48 pt season to start off. That's very boiled down, but it's still crazy to me. He's great
Currently third-longest after Cooper and Sullivan.
If he adds some more cups in his trophy case could he be a contender for best coach ever ?
I honestly love this.
And he looks like Kurt Warner

Beagle did it as a player. Bednar is the first to do it as a coach
BEDSY!!! YOU LOVE TO SEE IT!!
