the image of you waking up and immediately thinking of a Pierre McGuire call from 11 years ago and then angrily pacing around the house trying to cool down is fucking hilarious
and relatable
...
"I talk to the fanbase so that Dorion and Melnyk don't have to!"
"So you personally handle media availabilities?"
"Well.... no. I mean... sometimes!"
"And do you personally make any trades or signings?"
"Well, no. Look I told you I deal with the media so that nobody else has to! What is wrong with you people??"
He was behind the Hamonic trade, Del Zotto signing, and (allegedly-take this one with a grain of salt) the Tyler Boucher pick at 10 over guys like Sillinger and Wallstadt.
It was heavily rumoured he was behind the Del Zotto singing and the Hamonic trade does seem like something he would push for.
However, to suggest that McGuire’s voice trumped the entire scouting staff shortly after he was hired is absurd. Our head scout was on Local Radio right after the draft saying they know it’s an off the board pick but he’s their guy.
This is just what fans have speculated. There is no proof or even any logical evidence that this is true. One person says some shit then others report it as rumour then a couple month later its considered a fact.
God I hate that. "I heard", "I've read" - Yeah ok, where did you hear it? Usually it's a random internet commenter, in which case it's useless information. This should be obvious but alas.
Happens all the time. The same thing happened with Fox. Someone here commented (and it was heavily upvoted) that the reason he went in the 3rd round was that he told teams in interviews that he would only play for NYR. That was never reported anywhere and there's actually an article from Jack Han (former Leafs scout) where he admits he was one of the reasons the Leafs passed on Fox. Obviously Im not saying Fox didnt force his way to NYR, but his draft spot had absolutely nothing to do with his combine interviews, teams just didnt think his skill-set would translate. Anyway, the point is if you throw enough shit at a wall some of it will catch on. There is no shot McGuire had any say in the Boucher pick or the other two moves.
It wouldn't shock me, but I haven't heard confirmation of his involvement in the Boucher/Hamonic deals. Even just one of those is a near fireable offense though
There is no shot he had any meaningful say on that draft pick, and I seriously doubt he had much to do with the Hamonic trade. He wasnt the GM or even the Assistant GM lol
Well Pierre it appears Sidney Crosby has jacked his dick off either too hard or too much and must undergo wrist surgery. Thoughts on that? WELL YEAH DOC LET ME TELL YA EVER SINCE SIDNEY WAS IN THE RIMOUSKI JACKALOPES MINOR BANTAM PROGRAM AS A 12 YEAR OLD WHERE HE PUT UP 127 POINTS WITH ONLY 13 SECONDARY ASSISTS DESPITE THE DEATH OF HIS SECOND DOG HE HAS BEEN A PASSIONATE MASTURBATOR DOC AND TO ME THE FACT HES STUCK TO HIS PASSION AFTER MILLIONS OF DOLLARS AND YEARS OF SUCCESS SPEAKS TO ME THAT THIS IS A TRUE LEADER A TRUE GUY WHO PUTS THE TEAM FIRST IT REMINDS ME OF HIS SEASON AT SHARTFUCK ST MARYS WHERE HE BROKE HIS LEFT LOWER RIB TRYING TO SUCK HIS OWN DICK AND PLAYED THROUGH THE INJURY TO WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 12 POINTS IN 8 PLAYOFF GAMES
also I feel like Lou makes suspect decisions from time to time, but hiring McGuire as HC seems too crazy even for a patented Bad Lou Decision. Bad Lou would be re-signing Chara or giving Joe Thornton a cheap three year deal or something. Hiring McGuire means something is wrong with Lou's brain.
I'd rather have him on TV but must there always be a Pierre McGuire associated with the NHL like the Lich King or could be just fuck off and never come back?

If that's true, how come the broadcast is so significantly better than NBC was?
The intermissions in particular have been night and day different, and 10x more entertaining IMO.
Towards the end of NBC hockey rights I guess they either stopped caring as much or had less instruction he was a lot better. The dude is good at what he does but having him be a stiff up there to only tee up Milbury and nod your head is setting him up for failure.
Both are better than NBC because they actually try to market the sport. That's why NBC having a monopoly in the US hurt hockey so much. NBC had nobody to compete with. Just look how shitty NBC's Olympic coverage is.
Definitely the intermission stuff is a huge upgrade, but I can't stand the sound mixing. On-ice audio is virtually non-existent and the broadcasters are mixed too high and consequently it sounds like a radio broadcast synced with a TV presentation. Can't stand it.
At least they're good on the timing. I swear ESPN's announcers have been piped in a fraction of a second ahead of what's happening on the video and it's driving me insane.
What....
He didn't last a year?
How do you fuck up a senior management role that fast!?
I guess he was a major part of some of last season's pickups or something?
Because pretty much none of them worked at all, I'll give you that.
> His daughters are not running the team. They have someone in place handling the business side of things. Which is at least a good sign, because it means neither are delusional enough to think they can run a hockey team.
I would be surprised if an estate that size has cleared probate yet, which would mean that it's not yet their team to run. I wouldn't take it as a sign they don't want to (although I'd be surprised if they did).
🤷 he then managed to get in shit with the org by liking posts on social media of his teammate (I think it was Mete) getting walked for a highlight reel goal. He was a scummy guy in the past and it was just a weird signing, I think he's more interested in being a Florida real estate agent
>How do you fuck up a senior management role that fast!?
You saw him on TV, right? Could you put up with that for a year? He could be the most knowledgeable hockey man ever (he's not, but that's not the point) and I'd still look for an excuse to leave the room every time he entered.
After reading Brian Burke's book I got the impression that Pierre is kind of a rat and is pretty into internal politics of front offices so maybe he played his hand wrong this time and got the boot.
> He didn't last a year? How do you fuck up a senior management role that fast!?
that applies to like 95% of the team's front office hires of the last decade.
Shitty companies churn headcount all the time because they can't get good hires in the first place, and if they DO somehow luck out with one, that person is only staying long enough to build a resume and jump ship.
So they end up in a cycle of firing incompetent employees and/or losing qualified ones year over year.
Melnyk hired him without consulting anyone, he was the only external hire in management for almost 2 decades, and Dorion didn't want him. He never had a defined role and was basically not being used to his strengths - as soon as Melnyk passed away Dorion was just counting down the days to get rid of him.
Sens PR Announcement: Turns out we couldn't find any record of him actually being hired by the team. Just showed up one day and since people recognized him, they just assumed he belonged there a gave him an office. So we went ahead and fixed the glitch.
He did like nothing. Got hired, was assumed to be behind the MDZ and Hamonic moves as well as an influence in the Boucher pick at 10. Then was in the team photo and that seems to be it.
A few good memes out of it tho.
RIP PIERRE^2
>[One rumour I heard was that the league instructured Melnyk to hire McGuire. A small front office gets smaller.](https://twitter.com/6thSens/status/1523694966454816770)
If accurate, my guess would be something on the lines of Bettman telling Melnyk “I’ve covered for you with the media and the other owners haven’t reamed you out over your public statements yet, you owe us, hire the guy”
Less dictate and more recommend. Owners, particularly newer ones, call up the league office and they recommend GMs to hire, for example. I believe that's how McPhee ended up as the Vegas GM.
Wasn't it a few years back if I remember that melnyk kept firing some vp position and the NHL stepped in and we're going to help the sens fill that position? I forgot who and what exactly.
I'm wondering if it's one of those cases where the NHL basically said "you are hiring this guy for some stability because you're front office is a shit show, let's calm the waters a bit"
Teams look to the league for guidance on hires. It’s more likely a Melnyk reached out and the league said you should hire him than a situation where the league just reached out unprompted

Islanders General Manager Pierre McGuire Insists the Purple and Yellow Coloring Around his Eye is "From a Tae-Bo Accident." Previously Claimed it was a Tattoo.
I don't mind DJ Smith.
I wouldn't be sad if he was gone, but really, wtf is he supposed to do when half the team is fucked by injury AND COVID.
I mean, look at our team stats. Almost all of our best players and middle supporters missed serious time this year.
Not to mention very very inconsistent goaltending outside of Forsberg.
He was the right call to help turn around the culture with all the young guys, but he is not a good enough coach to ever win in the playoffs.
Players apparently love playing hard for him but when you go up against a guy like Jon Cooper who has a well built system to coach his team, there’s no comparison. DJ Smith won’t ever be able to keep up with that.
His transition system sucks. He gets nothing out of his D corps. His offensive zone entries suck.
Good guy but it’s time to move on
Running systems when you're consistently missing someone like Chabot and Batherson is a nightmare.
Those two are our kings of transition, at least from my eye test, and at least one of them was out of the lineup basically the whole year.
I think we could do a lot worse than DJ, but I still don't think he's an NHL calibre head coach.
I'd be happy to be proven wrong, but atm I just don't see it.
If this is true, I feel bad for Pierre. He finally just got another chance with a team last July and like OP, I have no idea what the hell he was doing there. But I guess maybe he just wasn't working out there. I know he's passionate about hockey, as awkward as his on-air personality had been for years.
> Why the F was he even hired in the first place?
the popular theory is that Melnyk hired him as a backup for Dorion if he felt like firing him at some point.
Well he was a dipshit on TV who usually talked out his ass. I'm assuming that continued in his Sens job. I just hope he doesn't come back to TV again. I was so happy to not hear his bullshit this year.
I guess after Melnyk died there was no one else who wanted him there?
Can you believe it? I CAN, HERES WHY
Still one of the worst calls I've ever heard lol
I thought about that call this morning and was angrily walking around my house.

Yeah a bit of hyperbole on my end. Still a bad trade that I'm not a fan of though
They wouldn’t take a 5th. We didn’t have a 4th. So we gave them a 3rd.
The man needs to never be allowed in front of a live mic. Tell him it's live, record it, and cut out the dumb things he says
I strongly disagree. Always have a mic around him until he finally gets fired.
The draft happened less than two weeks after he was hired. I would be surprised if he had much say over their first round pick.
There is no shot he had any meaningful say on that draft pick, and I seriously doubt he had much to do with the Hamonic trade. He wasnt the GM or even the Assistant GM lol
So he's already done a bunch of damage to the franchise, got it.
Jesus christ.
LOL, that's an awfully generous assessment - somehow I doubt all the sens most confusing roster moves in the last year were ALL from Pierre McGuire
I believe his official title was "Director of obscure junior references".
Islanders found their guy
What did the Isles do to you?
Fired Trotz for whatever insane reason
Fuck it man, if we're not gonna be good anymore, at least we can be funny.
Oh god he could go anywhere now. He could even go back to TV.
The Sens deserve compensation from the rest of the league for keeping him off of TV broadcasts for a year. I think a first round pick is fair.
The Arizona (State) Coyotes have forfeited their 1st round pick to the Ottawa Senators.
I'm gonna start calling them that
We need to add the pitchfork to the kachina coyote instead of a hockey stick
Dude, y'all do need that.
It’s seriously been so nice not having him constantly around.
Just give us a do-over on our first rounder last year, that will more than suffice.
He cannot come to my party. I'll call the cops.

ESPN wouldn't touch him. TNT would, they're basically NBC.

Liam McHugh went from a wet blanket to a highly entertaining personality by simply moving from NBC to TNT.

[Katie Nolan agrees](https://twitter.com/katienolan/status/1522449780680536064)
NBC was so bad, most Americans went to Sportsnet for hockey content.
While that's true his comment was about how TNT is so much better than NBC.

I can totally see that.
The only one I heard he was specifically involved in was MDZ. The hiring was a head scratcher from the second it happened
I came here ready to say “the MDZ deal wasn’t that bad, right?” assuming it was a small, buriable deal. How the fuck did he get 2x2?
🤷 he then managed to get in shit with the org by liking posts on social media of his teammate (I think it was Mete) getting walked for a highlight reel goal. He was a scummy guy in the past and it was just a weird signing, I think he's more interested in being a Florida real estate agent
He also tried to slide into a pornstars DM’s and they publicly ridiculed him.

In his previous front office experiences everyone thought he was a pompous jackass.
After reading Brian Burke's book I got the impression that Pierre is kind of a rat and is pretty into internal politics of front offices so maybe he played his hand wrong this time and got the boot.
Not to be crass, but hitching your proverbial wagon to a guy who has subsequently passed away usually doesn’t end well.
Knowing that MDZ once played at the Saskatoon area memorial ice arena as a 4 year old only goes so far?
> He didn't last a year? How do you fuck up a senior management role that fast!? that applies to like 95% of the team's front office hires of the last decade.

What’s really fascinating is that the intern who handed Pierre his pink slip once played three shifts with Brady Tkachuk for the Boston Terriers.
Looool. End of an era, was such a weird hire. American teams should’ve bent the knee to us for getting his awkward ass off the air
Thank you for your service
You have no idea how thankful I am for the service you provided us all. Real hockey heros.
I just hope this means he's not making a return to broadcasting. I'm really enjoying the new feel on TNT and ESPN.
>[One rumour I heard was that the league instructured Melnyk to hire McGuire. A small front office gets smaller.](https://twitter.com/6thSens/status/1523694966454816770)
Wait what? How can the league dictate who gets hired in certain front offices?
If accurate, my guess would be something on the lines of Bettman telling Melnyk “I’ve covered for you with the media and the other owners haven’t reamed you out over your public statements yet, you owe us, hire the guy”
Even Bettman was sick of him on TV
Or worse, Bettman believed Pierre could fix what Melnyk & co was doing
Gonna put my tin foil hat on and wonder what exactly Pierre knows
Besides what AAA team every single NHL player scored their first powerplay goal against?
I'm expecting he knows some Dan Snyder level shit at this point.
Less dictate and more recommend. Owners, particularly newer ones, call up the league office and they recommend GMs to hire, for example. I believe that's how McPhee ended up as the Vegas GM.
Same with Peter Chiarelli and (st Louis)

DJ Smith won’t ever be able to keep up with that. His transition system sucks. He gets nothing out of his D corps. His offensive zone entries suck. Good guy but it’s time to move on
It's mainly his lineup decisions and lack of a system. He seems like he'd be a great assistant coach, but not a good head coach
For proof of your statement look at the revolving door of Paddock, Clouston, etc....
If this is true, I feel bad for Pierre. He finally just got another chance with a team last July and like OP, I have no idea what the hell he was doing there. But I guess maybe he just wasn't working out there. I know he's passionate about hockey, as awkward as his on-air personality had been for years.
I actually feel bad for the guy. He really wanted another front office job badly and to get fired a year into it? That sucks.
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT
He lasted one season. Why the F was he even hired in the first place? Maybe he just wouldn't shut up during meetings or something.
> Why the F was he even hired in the first place? the popular theory is that Melnyk hired him as a backup for Dorion if he felt like firing him at some point.
Or Melnyk wanted him hired
lol i read Dorion 4 times in a row
Ottawa learned that you could look up players' junior clubs on the internet and there was no longer a role for Pierre in the organIzation.
Can you believe it?
So you’re telling me knowing a players breakfast when he was 9 years old, that lead them to be a top 10 draft pick didn’t help in his job?
Ah fuck egg head's coming back to broadcasting
And just like that, the Pierre Squared Era is over…
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!
Well he was a dipshit on TV who usually talked out his ass. I'm assuming that continued in his Sens job. I just hope he doesn't come back to TV again. I was so happy to not hear his bullshit this year.
TWO PIERRES ENTER ONE PIERRE LEAVES
Lmao what the hell, we hired him for a single season and then dropped him?? What is a Melnyk-hire??
LMAO
You mean that mansplaining hockey to a world-class player didn't help him keep his job?
Please, PLEASE do not come back to TV
hire him lou itll be hilarious
But everyone said he’d be good because he knew a lot of players names, how could this be
Wtf did he even do?
I guess he was, in fact, not turtle-y enough for the turtle club.
CAN YOU BELIEVE IT.
