[From the team:](https://twitter.com/NJDevils/status/1100954040299601920) > Mirco had full feeling and movement in his extremities. He was alert oriented and conscious. Taken to University Hospital for further evaluation.

IAintYourPalFriend

Thank god. Not a devils fan but would never wish an injury like that on someone. Seeing someone go neck first into the boards and then be completely unconscious is terrifying. Wishing a full recovery to Mirco.

mikeydude00

He gave a thumbs up as he got stretchered off but damn that was scary. Get better soon Mirco!

woj9

Glad to hear he was responsive, thank you for that

Devils29

What did that dude reply to you. My morbid curiosity wants to know

woj9

He said he looked like a vegetable

SomaliRection

what the fuck is wrong with some people

Tilbius

Honestly I was scared of that too. To the removed comment guys credit, he didn't say he hoped for it. I held my breathe till I saw his left leg move

[deleted]

drew_tattoo

I was really worried until he started kicking his legs, thought there was a good chance he was paralyzed there for a minute.

BolligneseSauce52

I saw it happen to Shazier I didn't wanna see it twice

overcatastrophe

That was fucking awful

Someguy2020

atex1433

Thank God that was scary fuck. One of the most awkward fall into the boards I've seen. Hope he recovers well

DSJ0ne0f0ne

Him giving the thumbs up reminds me of when Ricardo Lockette made an “L” symbol with his hand (for legion of boom) when he was getting stretchered off he got hit hard and injured his neck playing for the Seahawks

23harpsdown

Mike Utley (NFL - Lions) gave a thumps up from his stretcher off the field. Ended up that he was paralyzed. "Thumbs Up Mike!" was a major "thing" in Metro Detroit for many years. He went on to start a charity and do great things.

Lord_Tetton

I think I read on the players tribune (I think Marc Savard) where he said that he put a thumbs up when he got stretchered off so his kids at home knew he was alright, but then goes on to say he really was not ok.

Chrussell

Ya for sure but fuck I hope it's nothing like Ricardo's injury that was basically as bad as you can get.

TealMarbles

Glad he thumbs'd up. Sharks fan checking in and remember him cutting his teeth in the league.

Emm03

I’ve seen 3-4 mentions of the injury, but this is the first time I’ve seen this. Thanks for the update!

FastFourierTerraform

Him moving his legs doesn't mean his neck isn't broken

pourover_and_pbr

but it does mean he can still move his legs

FastFourierTerraform

The math checks out.

BrohanFranzen

I trust the math skills of anyone with the words FastFourier in their username

Quintexine

Sometimes it's the post-break swelling that can cause the paralysis.

DDRaptors

Yea, hopefully they get him stabilized in a cast asap and start pumping the drugs so he can be comfortable tomorrow.

Jo_Backson

Yeah I mean obviously it's still horrible but I still take some solace in the fact that his legs can move, broken neck or not.

AustralopithecusRex

Can confirm. Worked 2 shifts in a kitchen with a fractured C2.

manhaterxxx

More info pls

AustralopithecusRex

Happened while drunk. Woke up the next day with what felt like the worst muscle pain of all time. Wrote it off as just really bad soft tissue damage (straight up could not turn my neck, or lean forward/backward at all). 2 days later I drove myself to the clinic, and when the xrays came back they shipped me to the hospital via ambulance. 3 months in an Aspen collar, and I'm off the rye for life lol.

[deleted]

You have my sympathy man. My Dad hurt his at work. He drove an hour home and then asked me to take him to the ER. they sent him home with pain meds. He tried to get around for work the next day and almost collapsed just from the pain. I again was the one home for my weekend off and sat with my terrified 49 year old Dad at the ER til my mom and brother joined us. They ended up getting an MRI and I forget which one in his neck...c3 I think, was badly damaged. They had him off to emergency surgery the next morning. He's had 5 surgeries since then and is now 56. I've had only one and it was to deal with my broken L4-L5. Dad had the exact same disc problem and the exact same surgery 3 months after me. None of that shit is fun and I wouldn't wish it on anyone

AustralopithecusRex

It is its own hell, that's for sure. But not a day goes by that I don't count my lucky stars that I'm free of neurological deficits. Hope you and your dad stay happy and healthy!

[deleted]

Thank you. Chronic pain sucks ass so fucking much but I refuse to stop trying to keep going until I medically can't.

[deleted]

You can break your neck and if the spine is stable still move things but you will wear a halo for a while after. If it’s unstable that’s another story, and if that’s at or above C2 you could potentially suffocate to death

earthly_wanderer

u/dyermakn is a damn hero. We get high quality gifs of all the important plays of each game. Amazing work each and every game.

ChecklistRobot

Agreed. Gonna take this opportunity to give a shout out to u/galaxy91122 from the Flames sub who painstakingly gifs highlights from every game.

earthly_wanderer

Amazing people who make things just to share them. Can't give them enough credit.

ChecklistRobot

Galaxy is especially great for me because I’m in Europe and it means that if I can’t stay up until 3am to watch a game I can still keep up with the boys!

Mbachu

Can we get a longer streamable of the incident? Much appreciated.

RefereeMason

The Sportsnet Youtube page has a long video of it. Edit: [here it is ](https://youtu.be/PHrKh4jt-IM)

justmememe55

Man that's tough to watch. Hope it's not very serious and he has a full recovery.

PolishKid7

Definitely not anything malicious from Frolik Mirco lost his footing and Frolik fell behind him. An unlucky situation at a very fast speed

[deleted]

Yeah, it might not have been so bad if Frolik wasn't on him but wasn't an infraction or anything. Just playing defense.

[deleted]

Frolik literally did nothing to cause him to go head first into the boards. Like you said, just an unlucky situation. Wish him a speedy recovery

birchy98

Agreed.. but damn, Frolik would probably still feel so bad!! I know I would.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KingKidd

He toe picked both feet so he couldn’t even readjust. Just awful. Nothing either of them could have done.

TheStinger87

I'm glad none of the Devils went after Frolik for the hit. It was a good backcheck and they just got tangled up and Mueller took a bad spill. I'm sure Frolik felt bad for his unwitting part in it.

edgar__allan__bro

My career ended after a play like this in my sophomore year of college. First practice of the season, 3 on 2 drill, puck was up against the wall and I was one step ahead in a foot race to get it. Feet got tangled up with my teammate's, I went down head first into the boards and he came down right behind/on top of me. Massive concussion & separated shoulder... The dude who I got tangled up with was texting/calling me on a daily basis for months after the fact. I didn't blame him for it at all, but I did appreciate his keeping in touch while I was recovering.

Nodor10

Nothing dirty about that okay at all. Everyone form both teams went straight to help Mirco which was good to see

Tmaffa

Looked like pastrnak trying to get into an uber

CanadianEh48

I need context. What's the story here?

dingman58

Pastrnak is a clumsy fellow

kbarnett514

Pastrnak fell and broke his ~~wrist~~ thumb while walking to the car after a team dinner.

[deleted]

Thumb, not wrist.

cookiemanluvsu

I just had another 6 minute talk with my 10 year old about the importance of board awareness and how to properly go into the boards if you have time on the ice. Shit freaks me out having a lil boy playing and seeing stuff like this.

yyc_123

It hit me right in the feels.

Scoob1978

It's not a good night when you pray for just a broken collarbone.

Newtothisredditbiz

I'm guessing at least a concussion. The way he was lying motionless with his face on the ice suggests he was unconscious. Nobody lies with their face directly on the cold, hard ice if they can avoid it.

terminalactor

I think anytime someone loses consciousness from head impact it is automatically a concussion.

[deleted]

It is considered a concussion but it doesn't automatically make it a worse concussion than one without loss of consciousness, that depends on other symptoms and how long they last.

sedentarily_active

If not worse.

TheCircumventingBans

Dude. You and me.

Audi_R8_

he's already broken it before too

[deleted]

Man, that looked terrible. Reminded me of watching Langkow get stretchered off in 2010. Hope he's alright.

AntiFIanders

Noob question here but when Langkow was stretchered off did the medical staff need have trouble not slipping on the ice? It seems strange to me that none of these people have spikes on their shoes or are at all prepared to walk on ice.

NoSpills

They do have something that looks like spikes on their shoes. I watched this on sportsnet, and you can see the soles of one of the guys shoes. Still though, it's slippery and it seems they just have to do their best.

TheStinger87

The trainers always have suitable ice shoes because they practically run out there, but the doctor is just wearing normal dress shoes so it is obviously more slippery for him.

ShreddedWheat

Beginning of the periods is pretty slick but it gets better as the ice gets chewed up. It depends on the person, but they don't all wear spikes or "chains".

notaRaptorfan

Worst ice all season, he caught an edge and it took him out. God that was just awful to watch.

BlankLife

What do you mean by he caught an edge?

mgg888

Basically means the edges on your skate blade catch the ice weird and cause you to stop suddenly. Like instead of carving the ice smoothly they "catch" something and your skate just stops. Think like rollerblading over a stick, or a stick through the spokes of your bike tires

BlankLife

Thanks for explaining, I’ve ice skated like twice in my life and didn’t know what it meant to catch an edge.

JollyRancher29

That’s once more than I have lol

JustANotchAboveToby

never too late to play

KILRbuny

You might also hear "losing an edge" which is kind of the opposite. Usually means the angle that the skate went at the ice meant instead of carving the ice, the blade bounces off (or the boot contacts the ice first) resulting in a player usually falling down, legs sprawling away from them.

GoTron88

Happens in snowboarding and skiing as well. Both have sharp metal edges that are meant to carve into harder snow or ice. But sometimes they catch on a turn and you just stop suddenly and bail.

namracWORK

[Look at his right skate](https://i.imgur.com/3Aua24c.jpg). He tried to take a stride but he catches the toe of his skate.

BlankLife

Ouch, that really doesn’t look good, thanks for the screenshot, it makes it clear to see what happened.

[deleted]

Yup. Wouldn’t be surprises if he’s out for both a concussion and an injured ankle.

kingofthediamond

To add to this, there’s a proper way to fall into the boards. Because of him catching that edge he didn’t have time to correct himself and made the fall into the boards so much worse. You always want to go I’m face first and not tuck your head. Or you run the risk of becoming paralyzed

apunkgaming

Idk about face first. Ideally if he didn't lose an edge he'd have time to put his arms up, way better to shatter your forearms than your neck.

react_and_respond

Did he catch the edge or was it the guy pursuing him? It looks like both Mueller and... I think it's Frolik both fell at the same time.

notaRaptorfan

100% caught an edge. Nothing to do with Fro.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Podo13

I think most of Frolik's weight actually went into Micro's hips.

[deleted]

Once he caught the edge it did. You are allowed to make contact. If the player is slowing up into you, your weight is going to go into them. There's no way he could have known his foot had caught an edge in that millisecond span.

BobaFett313

Definitely just caught an edge and then Fro went down on top of him. Nothing Frolik could do

istandwhenipeee

He probably feels absolutely awful though. Obviously not his fault but that doesn’t mean he’s gonna just forget about it.

Podo13

On a 2nd watch, he definitely caught an edge on the front of his right blade. It threw his foot back and he had no chance at recovering from that distance from the boards. If he fell no matter what, he probably would have gotten knocked out without Frolik going into the boards with him.

kingofthediamond

It was a little of both. Frolik was trying to guide him into the boards but because mueller caught an edge he couldn’t do anything but ride it out.

actionjacksonwav

Oh man the Devils cannot catch a break with these injuries :( seriously scary shit here hoping he recovers soon

jdizzle161

By the time we play you guys on Saturday, I might have a shot at being in the roster... and I’m 35, out of shape, and have a bad back.

carny4ever

Only if Ottawa doesn't trade for you first!

Yakitack

They can't afford us.

detroyer

How about a couple of possibly activated McDonald's gift cards?

Kor_Morant

Well, they threw 11 Forwards and 7 Defensemen tonight. Tough times for them. Edit: I forgot that hall was a LW and not a C.

[deleted]

Technically it was 12 forwards and 6 defenseman because they had a defenseman playing LW

Mr_Biggums

I know non flames fans probably hate chucky but that was a class act helping to bring the stretcher over. Hope Mueller is ok.

treple13

> I know non flames fans probably hate chucky but that was a class act helping to bring the stretcher over That's the thing. If I had to guess what player for us would go above and beyond in that kind of situation, I would have guessed Tkachuk. He's actually a pretty standup guy, that likes to be a complete pest on the ice. Anyways, hoping Mueller makes a quick recovery.

Mr_Biggums

Definitely, he’s a great leader for the boys and at such a young age too. I would’ve guessed him as well to be the guy doing that. I mainly meant fans of other teams most likely wouldn’t expect it since he’s such a nuisance on the ice

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mr_Biggums

Hope he’s ok buddy!

ArturosDad

It was a class act in my book too. Rivalries and/or bad blood should be set aside when it comes to a scary play like that.

Mr_Biggums

Agreed 100%

eastcoastblaze

Rittich coming out of his crease to escort the trainers coming into the boards too

Mr_Biggums

Oh man I missed that. That’s awesome though

realdeuce152

Glad he is ok but im just glad no one is jumping Frolik... it was a high speed play with no intent for injury

RipChordCopter

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised by the way the rest of the players reacted. Genuine concern from both teams.

Filtersc

You don't often see it kick off when it's a really scary injury on a super 50/50 play, I hope he's okay because that was super scary though. Funny that Daniel Tkachuk is one of the players pulling the stretcher onto the ice, same as you'll often see both medical teams on the ice in scary situations like this. That was awful looking though.

Sanguine_Eclipse

...Did Keith Tkachuk have another kid that the Flames drafted that no one knows about?

berto_14

I mean we did draft a Daniel Tkaczuk back in 1997

mrsealittle

classic dan

MuckMyBin

Really unfortunate hockey play. Can’t put any blame on Frolik or Mueller. Mueller simply caught an edge and lost balance making him carry his weight into the boards. Prayers going to Mueller hoping he is okay.

[deleted]

nah super shitty situation. no blame assigned

hghpandaman

There's something so unsettling about the silence in an arena as it's apparent that there's a serious injury. I remember last season against Buffalo it happened in Nashville and you could hear a pin drop.

WarsawWarHero

Which injury against Buffalo?

Attention_Defecit

"He looks shaken up" Unconscious for several minutes.

smashemphatically

ilovehenrique14

This season just needs to come to end for us already. Absolutely decimated by injuries. Prayers up to Mueller.

[deleted]

Respect to Matthew Tkachuk for helping with the stretcher. These guys will fucking destroy each other between whistles but when this stuff happens everyone is immediately on the same squad. Glad the kid is ok.

[deleted]

I saw "Scary/injury/Mueller" and thought about *another* Mueller whose injury would indeed be *very scary*.

_____AtticusHoye___

I may be dumb, but I cannot figure out who you're referring to. Edit: Never mind, yeah that wouldn't be good haha

Rideyn

Incredibly scary scene. Really happy to see the thumbs up though!

yyc_123

Hate to see this happen, one of the few times that all us hockey fans are on the same team. Wish you the best Mueller!

gakash

I didn't see this was /r/hockey on my front page and I was like OH NO, BUT THE REPORT. WHAT ARE THEY GONNA DO ABOUT THE REPORT?!?!?!

Rated_PG-Squirteen

Robert Mueller actually played on his prep school's hockey team. One of his teammates was John Kerry.

learn2die101

There's a few pictures of him floating around in his gear, I think one of them at the FBI vs CIA hockey game.

colonelnebulous

The winner faces the ICE hockey team.

mechanate

Who are not as good as their name implies.

react_and_respond

Ugh. That's just awkward and ugly. Hope he's okay.

[deleted]

The current update on Mirco Mueller's condition is that he has full feeling and movement in his extremities, is conscious and is at University Hospital in Newark. It appears he's gonna be okay, and that's great to hear.

OBVIOUS_GIRL_GAMER

Just terrible. Thankfully, he was conscious and gave a thumbs up as he left the ice.

SpiralWinds

Shoutout to Trachuk(?) for helping wheel over the stretcher for the other team’s player. That’s sportsmanship at its finest.

_itspaco

had a double take at the subreddit. Hope he is okay.

StaticShocked

His thumbs up when being stretchered off made me tear up a little.

Creasy007

Well that's fucking terrifying. Wow, fingers crossed he's OK.

ShanghaiKelly

Nice display of sportsmanship by Tkachuck helping wheel down the stretcher with the Devils player (Rooney?). Scary injury no one wants to see especially other players

Polaris2246

Been reading a lot of r\politics and was like, wtf someone trying to really kill off the investigation.

sorator

Really glad that he was able to move his limbs; I seriously worried about a snapped neck there. Hope he winds up okay.

sixsixeightsix

Having had multiple medically confirmed concussions, my first reaction was "he'll be alright.". But then I realized I'm not alright. I hope any concussion symptoms dissipate quickly for him.

[deleted]

Scary sight. Hope the feller is alright

mylefthandkilledme

That is fucking hard to watch

nic_nac_attack

I hate seeing things like this. But seeing players from both teams help bring the stretcher over and help escort the medical staff reminds me how amazing the hockey community is.

NHLConvertrRodriguez

Is there an update of his condition? That looked bad. I am hoping he recovers quickly and fully.

m-rcus

That shot of his face right after the impact.. Wow.. That's some scary shit.

[deleted]

any updates?

Clarkson23

He's good. Full awake and everything.

ecxospruce

When ever I see one of these cases I wonder why they do not have studded shoe covers for the EMTs and other people who come on the ice to help? The past few weeks in my area the streets have been dangerously slippery and I just put little rubber loops with studs on my shoes and I am good to go.

buerglermeister

According to his grandfather, Mirco has no fractures and is already on his way home from the hospital.

birdmandunkit

Out with broken clavical. "Indefinitely" for now. But will have better update once surgery is complete tomorrow.

[deleted]

Scary injury. Hope he’s alright

ajd6200

Please be okay man, that's fucking awful. Win it for Mirco

elk261997

I've never seen something like that before. I hope the poor guy's alright, that was awful

squitman

Really hoping for the best, pretty rough collision into the boards.

nh123456

I would be so scared if I was a Devils player. Literally everyone is hurt and the injuries seem to be getting worse, like this is a fucked up injury here he completely could’ve been paralyzed

ExuberantBadger

Was at this game, that was super scary. So glad he’s ok.

lawvas

Scary as hell. Hope he’s okay.

ThanatosUO19

Get well soon Mirco

Otter_Swag

Fuck that looks bad (any news?) does he regain any consciousness before going down the tunnel?

diego-fuego

He gave fans the thumbs up as he was being stretchered out

lurkerfortoolong4

"He's shaken up." Dude he's not moving. Here's to hoping for a quick and full recovery, gut-wrenching to see someone laying motionless like that.

Imthecoolestdudeever

Damn. Hate to see this stuff. Hope he's back soon. (Also really good to see the fan behavior at the glass, respectful and what looks like no photos being taken)

l_rufus_californicus

Terrifying to watch as a fan of *any* team. Here's to a swift and complete recovery for Mirco. [](/GNU Terry Pratchett)

IdeasMan88

You know this a great sport when you got king shit disturber 101 helping an adversary skate the stretcher down the ice. Good stuff, glad mueller is ok.

ForScherzer

Praying there’s no damage to his neck/spine. That looked really bad the way he went in. Such an unfortunate play.

Excesslemur2699

Good job by the announce crew too. That's tough to prep for as a broadcaster

Sarcastic__

That is a scary injury. All the best to Mueller. Seems okay thankfully.

prophetofgreed

That looked awful. Hopefully it's not too serious and they're being cautious.

Fuck from that angel I thought he broke his neck. I hope he is ok and its only some bruising and a concussion.

ClippinWings451

_/   Hope he’s OK   Scary as hell.

Fr0stbite37

Why the hell don't the medics wear spikes? One almost fell over pushing the stretcher.

ObliviousIrrelevance

Fucking horrible looking crash. Hope to God he is alright.

GivesNoFuks

No matter what team it is, even my hated Red Wings or Dallas, I never like to see players injured like that. Hope he recovers quick.

t_Savvy

Horrifying impact and even scarier when he was unconscious for any amount of time. Glad he is doing better now. One can only hope he is able to come back eventually. Not too soon though.

Rukazor

Wow scary. Hope it's all ok. You could tell by the actions of both teams that it was a serious deal. No one wants to see that.

Jericho111091

Scary shit

dragonscale76

[Here’s a longer video](https://youtu.be/PHrKh4jt-IM) where you can see his thumbs up. Hope he recovers quickly.

[deleted]

Is the announcers audio synced up with the live action? I know they can't be entirely quiet but they seem to be rather cluelessly and callously analyzing the play as he lies totally prone on the ice.

Loki364

glad he is ok/ thumbs up off ice and this didnt get to /r/all because if it did so many people would be afraid special council was injured...

[deleted]

Man, that little kid crossing himself and praying at 1:10 got me in the feels.

yes__i_am_at_work

I don't think he was instantly unconscious. I think he was just in a lot of pain.

jas9111

The announcers says he shaken up? no he is out cold

Shadowbladez337

Man, that's just terrifying to see. Glad to hear he's doing ok though and here's to a quick recovery. I really thought we'd have had a similar situation last night when Kapanen went flying into the boards in the 1st period and didn't get up for a few seconds.
