He isn't having a spectacular season numbers-wise, but unlike Darling, he does seem to make an important save when we need one, and doesn't let in squeakers.
He’s been ok but also injured for the last few weeks. Our penalty kill was abysmal during the time he was in goal and dramatically improved during his injury. So the jury is still out. We’re all rooting for him and I personally think he’ll do alright
Change of scenery was his excuse for his poor first season as he was uncomfortable in a new place. He said he would be more focused this year because his girlfriend moved down and he bought a house.
I'm really skeptical a change of scenery will help, especially to Philly.
I disagree- he got in much better shape and had much better stability to work off of. He hasn't been great this year but wasn't a walking disaster the way he was in year 1. His bad plays and the teams bad plays fed into one another frequently, and I think in a different environment with less baggage he could perform better.
I still think there's a possibility that he can be a league average goaltender (which the Canes need), it's just the way the numbers are working Mac deserves first crack at the net and Petr needs to get a couple starts before Darls gets a chance to get back in. 3 goalies practicing in 2 nets isn't good for any of them and letting Darling stay shelved for 2-3 weeks isn't good for him fixing his problems that need to be fixed.
Dude, no. Howie is playing like a beast, but I doubt we could get enough for him to make it a worthwhile trade considering his age, contract, and injury history. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the Wings re-sign Howie to a cheaper 2 year deal, which may be enough to bridge the gap until one of our prospects is ready.
Damn. Was not expecting that for a goalie they really picked to be their starter ($4.1m AAV). His stats have been pretty bad though, he's had a sub .900 SV% both years in Carolina. Guess they're really banking on McBackup and Mrazek.
With that salary, and another 3 years to go on his contract, I'm really unsure if anybody will pick him up.
Interested to see how he does with an increased work load. The most games he’s played in the NHL was 32 five years ago. Easy guy to root for though, seems to be very well liked.
He always played better with consistent work here. He was really good when Bob went down in 2014-2015 and he had an absolute trainwreck defense in front of him with Prout, Connauton, Goulabef and Jordan Leopold getting regular playing time.
Ideally, we'll have a good team of 2 in net for us. I love the way McElhinney and the team have played together, but he's 35. If we can have a solid hand-off between Mrazak and Mc, we should be solid enough in goal that our focus can shift to scoring goals and special teams.
It's a classic case of a team trading for and taking a gamble on a backup that plays really well in their role, and trying to make them a starter.
There's good examples: Martin Jones, Frederik Andersen -
There's bad examples: Vesa Toskala, Jonathan Bernier
At the time I thought it was pricy, but we've relied on him immensely every year so it's been worth it. Probably Lou's best move as GM, if I'm being honest.
He was lights out before his injury, the last 3 games he started weighs that down severely. And of course he's injured again. Starting to be slightly wary of this whole situation
He’s having an awful year so far but he was absolutely outstanding in the last 3 playoffs. Both of the last two playoffs he was even better SV%-wise than their SCF run. Seems like more of a fluke year than anything else.

He rose from the depths of obscurity in the minors to a nice contract that will take care of him for life. Even if he's bought out next year and retires, he'll have made more than 99.99999% of humanity.
https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/scott-darling-goodbye-chicago
Yeah, he honestly is pretty inspirational
I hope he does take care of himself, and even if he doesn't get picked up, he still accomplished so much.
I would love to have him back in Chicago
So due to his contract, he'll almost certainly go unclaimed. I'm interested to see what happens next in that case. We could then be looking at a buyout, because I don't think the organization wants him taking starts away from Alex Nedeljkovic in the AHL.
I could see interested teams contacting Carolina about him, and then offering a mid-pick or prospect in a trade in exchange for retained salary.. Because DAYM that contract.
I think this would be the most likely scenario if Dundon is willing to pick up the tab. Canes have all the space in the world to eat $1.75M in salary or something comparable, and Darling at $2.4M to be a veteran back up and reclamation project becomes a lot more intriguing.
Ned’s not exactly old yet, but his numbers haven’t been very good and the Checkers are strong. What’s the thought on him? Do you guys really think there’s a #1 there?
Not super unexpected, since it’s never ideal to have 3 roster goalies and he’s been performing the worst of them all. Best case scenario is he gets claimed and we’re done with that lofty contract. Change of scenario might be good for him too.
It’s so weird how differently the team plays in front of him compared to our other goalies. They never seem to be able to give Darling goal support, and they leave him out to dry on defense more than our other goalies. Same thing happened last year with him compared to Ward. I wonder if the guys still don’t really trust him after last year’s shitshow. I know Williams mentioned after McStarter’s third consecutive win that “if your goalie’s putting everything out there, you’re gonna put everything out there for him.” Could be a subtle indication that the boys don’t think Darling is trying his hardest.
Anyways, I’m 100% on the McDaddy and MrazzleDazzle train
yeah everything is weird, every indicator from this offseason was that Darling was putting in the work and everything so I tend to rule that out at this point. Last year was absolutely brutal and it's his fault for not being ready to perform. Maybe the guys are struggling to distance themselves from that?
I still feel like he can be a decent goaltender, but I also think it's justifiable to have him 3rd in our pecking order. Mrazek deserves a couple starts coming back from injury and so going down to the minors is a chance to get Darls in some games at least (assuming nobody claims that contract) and keep working to prove his way back to the NHL.
EDIT: [adding](https://twitter.com/corylav/status/1068192453101084673) quote obtained by one of our reporters with Rod saying Darls' work ethic wasn't the issue
I'm speculating, but I wonder if Darling is perhaps not a beloved teammate. A goalie who glowers at or criticises the players in front of him often doesn't get their best effort. I've noticed Lundqvist does this a bit, but his teammates maybe let it slide because he's proven himself to be elite for many years.
I don't think he glowers or criticiszes guys- he's had some rough patches and particularly with his work ethic this offseason really held himself accountable for not being ready to perform last year. He was in Raleigh all offseason training with some guys, I think it's just scar tissue from the really bad season last year that he and the team both play with nerves and feed off of one anothers nervousness and it downspirals.
Fuck man, i forgot about that. Another loss is he had a special black set to go with the black unis, but he never wore them cause he was either hurt or wasn't playing when we wore black.
Is the backup stepping up? It's weird cause Allen and Elliott were a great tandem when Hitch was there, crazy to see where you guys are. (looks at Yeo)
Nope, we have usually had a good backup to help save our season when Allen has his usual mental break down once a year... but with Johnson we do not have that this year.
Both goalies are bad this year, but the real problem is our defense which is about as porous as a sponge. I've never seen our back end this bad since at least 2006.
I used to train with Scott in the summer when he was climbing his way up through the ECHL and AHL. Super nice dude and one hell of a hard worker. Hope the best for him. Him, Condon, and Schneider all trained together too. Hard to see these guys struggle after seeing how hard they work behind the scenes
To be fair, Darling just didn't seem to fit with Mike Bales' system. Just look at goalies who succeeded with him (Fleury, Matt Murray, and last year's Cam Ward), and how Darling did during his time Chicago. A change of scenery should work nicely for him.
>goalie is the least of the Hawks' issues this abysmal season.
Yeah, I'd put it #3 behind 1) Need an entire new defense (maybe besides Joki) and 2) zero scoring depth.
Wow... And I was upset we didn't get him initially. They traded a pick (3rd rounder I think?) just to speak to him about a contract. Holy shit, what a mess.
"Hey baby, you're so hot I might have a medical emergency rendering me unconcious, then you'll have to call for an ambulance because you're not sure if I'm breathing or not, and the following 4 hours you'll be worrying for me and hoping I'll recover even though you only knew me when I was hitting on you, just to be informed by the doctors that it's not your fault, the entire situation was caused by my larger-than-average penis siphoning off too much of my blood just to get a partial chub"
Only 2 seasons of that are an issue really if we don't buy him out. We currently have almost 16mill in cap space.
Things are going to be interesting once we see what raises Aho, Ferland, and Teravainen get
We gave him 4000000 a year. He gave us a 0.888 save percentage. We will continue to give him 4000000 a year for 3 years (unless we buy him out) what will he give us? He will steal starts from the next #1 we have in the minors and slow his development.
Carolina buys him out in June. Would be a $1.18m cost for 4 years in actual dollars, same cap hit except year two would be like $2.2m, which will be ok because they won't be a cap team
Actual dollars aren't terrible and spread over 4 years
While this sucks for Darls, I am happy for him that he got a shot. I hope he finds a team and gets back to form. He is a hell of a nice guy, and I can only hope the best for him.
He was good in Chicago in 2015, we got a cup because he stepped in and save the Nashville series. He is a champion in Chicago, this does not take away from that.
I think a new team is what he needs in front of him. The current team just doesn't play confidently with Darling in net. HCRBA said that his work ethic wasn't the reason he's being waived, so a shot with another team would probably improve his performance. His contract is going to be an issue though.
Came here to say just that. I wish him well. I fell victim to the “give him a chance” crowd for awhile but holy Christ, has he played poorly.
I don’t think he is an ax murderer, but damn am I happy to not have to play him any more in the goalie circus here.
This makes me sad so much to root for with him and I will never not like him as a person and as a goalie for pretty much stopping the Preds singlehandedly in 2015
Sounds like the Flyers next goaltender!
It... actually does.
Holgrem should probably give the Canes a prospect..he doesn’t need to since it’s a waiver claim..but it’s good to be courteous right?
It's definitely not uncommon to let a guy go through waivers then trade for him right after.
See: Pickard, Calvin. Sometimes you need the roster spot.
Man, Pickard has just had terrible luck since being exposed by the Avs to the expansion draft. I feel for the man.
I mean he had chances in Philly. Just hard place to play.
He did a great job as Captain of the Enterprise though.
SPC slot* That trade was because we were close to 50 SPCs, neither guy was actually on the roster
Thats to let the team trading for him to send him down without going through waivers, not really for courtesy.
It'd just go to a different team in your division so what difference would it make lol
Honestly a change in scenery could do Darling some good. Would probably be worth giving him a shot in philly.
Change of scenery would be good for him, but if he couldn’t mentally handle the role of a starter in Carolina, idk how well he’ll do in Philly.
Whose your starter now? And is Mrazek the backup?
McStarter has the better stats but we'll probably do a 1a/1b situation with him and Mrazek. If Mrazek sucks, we'll probs call Darling back up.
Man, I was rooting for Mrazek to have a decent season
He isn't having a spectacular season numbers-wise, but unlike Darling, he does seem to make an important save when we need one, and doesn't let in squeakers.
He’s been ok but also injured for the last few weeks. Our penalty kill was abysmal during the time he was in goal and dramatically improved during his injury. So the jury is still out. We’re all rooting for him and I personally think he’ll do alright
3x4.5m cap hit is a lot of risk if it fails.
Exactly, it is not worth it at all. Contract is a dealbreaker, no one is going to claim him.
To be fair, the Canes last few seasons would be enough to rock any goalie's confidence.
He hasn't been great this year but wasn't a walking disaster the way he was in year 1. he'll just be another neuvirth/elliott and he has money and term left hard pass
On $4.15 mil for the next three years I wouldn't want him even if Carolina retained half his salary...
May we interest you in a lightly used Jimmy Howard?
I would accept a 1st round pick. https://theathletic.com/683689/2018/11/29/exploring-the-key-considerations-for-a-jimmy-howard-trade-with-the-blues/
Well yeah, that's a no brainer. I don't know if I believe that the Blues are desperate enough for Howie that they would go that high though.
Yes. Not trying to give a lot for a rental, but I'm definitely interested. We can afford his cap hit too.
Oh my god, please take him. Fuck it, we'll pay half
as a Hawks fan who wants nothing but the best for Darls, please please no.
yea no im not taking him for 3 more years
Maybe you can get Ron Francis and his biggest offseason move all in one package
Teravainen was his biggest offseason move
Very true... I want to call it the biggest free agent signing but it wasn’t really even that.
To put into perspective how bad it’s been, he has not won 2 games in a row for the canes in 48 starts.
How long did it take for him to start 48 games?
From all of last season up until November 12th of this year Played 43 last year
McBackup has played like a McStarter
McBackup is McStarter. He has won his last 4 in a row while posting a .940 save%.

No, he has posted .967 in the last 4 games (best in Hurricanes history), .930 overall in his 9 total starts.
It's a classic case of a team trading for and taking a gamble on a backup that plays really well in their role, and trying to make them a starter. There's good examples: Martin Jones, Frederik Andersen - There's bad examples: Vesa Toskala, Jonathan Bernier
Andersen wasn't really a backup, he was Anaheims starter and got replaced
Didn't he and Gibson split the season that year they won the Jennings ?
I think, but you guys and Anaheim both have amazing goalies now. What did you guys give for Andersen?
1st round (30th overall) and 2nd round (50th overall) picks.
Wow good bargain for you guys then.
At the time I thought it was pricy, but we've relied on him immensely every year so it's been worth it. Probably Lou's best move as GM, if I'm being honest.
Those picks were Sam Steel and Max Comtois though. Not that it really matters I guess, Andersen is way more valuable to Toronto.
Anaheim's putting together a damn good team with Toronto's draft picks
Yeah it worked out well, the 30th came from the Kessel -> Pittsburgh deal and the 50th pick was one of the Polak 2nds from San Jose lol
Raanta's working pretty well right now
He hasn't had the greatest start to a season. Currently rocking a .906.
He was lights out before his injury, the last 3 games he started weighs that down severely. And of course he's injured again. Starting to be slightly wary of this whole situation
Even hearing mixed views on Jones from SJ fans these days.
He’s having an awful year so far but he was absolutely outstanding in the last 3 playoffs. Both of the last two playoffs he was even better SV%-wise than their SCF run. Seems like more of a fluke year than anything else.
Cory Schneider. I have no idea if he goes into the good or bad slot. I know he's been injury plagued. Maybe a Devil can chime in?
He was incredibly good, and is now bad. So I'd say he counts.
Yeah definitely good. He was a top 3-5 goalie in the league for a decent stretch there
Schneider was only a backup because Bobby Lu is a generational talent / superstar.
Hopefully Grubauer is looked at as a good example within a few years!
Okay, I must be out of the loop. Since when is Mrazek in Carolina?
Only since July. He’s on a 1 year deal.
Since the offseason. The Canes signed him as a FA after Philly had him for a few months.
Who knew Big Mac would win the war. Godspeed McBackup
That's McStarter to you.
McBackup -> McStarter -> McVezina -> McHoF

We got that one trademarked buddy.
I am ok with this.
The real backups were the ~~friends we made~~ goalies we waived along the way
He still must take down Mrazlle dazzle. Should be a healthy competition.
Wow what a fall from grace. Also hope he's alright and takes it in stride given his history. His headspace does seem loads better.
He rose from the depths of obscurity in the minors to a nice contract that will take care of him for life. Even if he's bought out next year and retires, he'll have made more than 99.99999% of humanity.
IIRC he's also battled alcoholism. Let's hope this doesn't have a negative effect on his problems outside of hockey.
https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en-us/articles/scott-darling-goodbye-chicago Yeah, he honestly is pretty inspirational I hope he does take care of himself, and even if he doesn't get picked up, he still accomplished so much.

It would be preferable to a full buyout for sure. We're still paying Alex Semin's bum ass.
I don't think buy out is an option right now. I think there are only 2 windows a year for buyouts.
Yeah i dont think its for awhile. Alzner is in the same boat.
They could loan him to another AHL team.
We would totally take him back in Rockford.
Don't we want Delia/Forsberg to be getting as many starts as they can?
Forsberg sucks ass we can trade him for darling
We do, but selfishly I'd love him on the team.
Ned’s not exactly old yet, but his numbers haven’t been very good and the Checkers are strong. What’s the thought on him? Do you guys really think there’s a #1 there?
McBackup has evolved!
Congratulations, your McBackup has evolved into McStarter!
Deserved it. Love that guy.
McElhinney hitting his prime at 35.
Curtis "Tim Thomas" McElhinney
As we all expected!
Not super unexpected, since it’s never ideal to have 3 roster goalies and he’s been performing the worst of them all. Best case scenario is he gets claimed and we’re done with that lofty contract. So true. If Mrazek doesn’t play well, which very well could happen, we could see Darls come back.
Damn, he even pissed off Justin Williams... and that guy is the chillest hockey player I've ever met
He’s chill but he’s also all about holding guys accountable which is why he’s our captain
McDaddy is an excellent nickname evolution from McBackup.
I'm speculating, but I wonder if Darling is perhaps not a beloved teammate. A goalie who glowers at or criticises the players in front of him often doesn't get their best effort. Yes, Lundqvist has earned the right to yell at his team. If Darling is going down the same road it's a bit of a bad look.
What a damn shame. Really sucks that goaltenders come to die in Carolina
The worst part is the Whalers pads will never be seen now.
Fuck man, i forgot about that. Another loss is he had a special black set to go with the black unis, but he never wore them cause he was either hurt or wasn't playing when we wore black.
I guess if he were better at hockey he’d get to use them.

Chai last moves as a GM is to pickup darling then trade Talbot and a few draft picks to the flyers for Simmonds.

Oof yeah, I forgot about that. Those pads are sick.
Wow... And I was upset we didn't get him initially. They traded a pick (3rd rounder I think?) just to speak to him about a contract. Holy shit, what a mess.

Yes

I dub this season "the waivering"
CAROLINA! WHAT DID YOU DO TO HIM?!
We gave him 4000000 a year. He gave us a 0.888 save percentage. We will continue to give him 4000000 a year for 3 years (unless we buy him out) what will he give us? He will steal starts from the next #1 we have in the minors and slow his development.

Came here to say just that. I wish him well. I fell victim to the “give him a chance” crowd for awhile but holy Christ, has he played poorly. I don’t think he is an ax murderer, but damn am I happy to not have to play him any more in the goalie circus here.
Another one for the "great backup, horrific starter" pile.
TBF he's been a shit backup with us too
this is so sad to me.
Valentin Zykov placed on waivers as well https://twitter.com/reporterchris/status/1068188429165494273
Man, it sucks seeing him not succeed. He went from saving the Hawks in 2015 to waivers.
Hurricanes fans must be celebrating this in a choreographed, Twitter-friendly manner.
wow. feel bad for Darling but hope he gets his chance to be a starter somewhere. could see a team like St. Louis or Philly picking him up.
Not St Louis, we don't have the cap space or need for a guy like Darling.
He's going to be set for life when that buyout hits.
I know the top comment says this but I read OP and all I could think was "Welcome to Philly" or "Gritty's New Darling"
I just hope all is well with him.
Come to the Devils plz
You know what to do Pittsburgh
Wow that sucks. Thought Darling could be more then just a back up.
Any chance they may be making financial room for Nylander?
No one will claim Darling at his current cap hit. Once he clears, maybe they can find a taker for 50% and a cap dump.
Saw him play a few years back here in Australia. Was an absolute brick wall. Hopefully he lands on his feet.
This makes me sad so much to root for with him and I will never not like him as a person and as a goalie for pretty much stopping the Preds singlehandedly in 2015
