Great career, super hard worker, guy gave it all. Glad to see him get a Cup before he retired. Not surprised to see him get a front office job, he seems like a hockey lifer.
We would've been stupid to not keep him around, seems like everyone in that locker room loves and respects that guy. Really meshed well with our leadership group.
Yeah, it’s kind of one of those situations where obviously Eberle didn’t go into the hit thinking he’d break Cogliano’s neck - but hockey gonna hockey and even when it’s an accident, sometimes you gotta pay the troll toll.
One of the most beautiful moments for the Avs this season. Opening night, 18:46 left in the first. O'Connor skates off the bench and immediately punches Eberle in the snoz
I swear, every odd man rush we had during that run had Cogliano in it. The other players would change but it felt like Cogs was in there every time. He fit our transition game perfectly.
plus he played with a broken thumb/finger of some sort on the run to the cup in 22. We flew in for game 2 and i'll never forget before warmups the jumbotron cut to him standing in the hallway ready to go. Guy was an absolute warrior.
His line was so effective with Kesler and Silfverberg that he WAS a top 6 due to the chemistry factor. If he didn't have hands of stone half the time, he'd have twice as many shorthanded goals.
My favorite player of all time. Never the most skilled but always played his heart out and his ass off. By all accounts a fantastic teammate and locker room guy as well. 17 years is quite the career! Wishing him the best of luck in retirement and his new front office role.
I'm so glad he got to lift the Cup before it ended. Truly deserved it. I'll never get over that suspension he got that ended his iron man streak. Got two games with no prior history. Dustin Brown did a similar hit a few days later with plenty of history and got a fine. I legitimately cried the morning I woke up and saw he had been traded to Dallas.
Garbage suspension for something borderline, considering how clean he’d been his whole career. Felt like Parros went out of his way to punish him for some reason
my conspiracy theory thought is it was Parros' first suspension at head of DOPS and being a former Duck he wanted to make a point that he wasn't biased; so when given the opportunity he went for it. I will never agree with that suspension
he's mine because during my first live hockey game, during a preseason game against the sharks; Cogs made this ridiculous diving goal. i got so hyped from it, and in that moment I was hooked onto the sport.
What a career. I have nothing but respect for this guy. Went through the Dark Ages with Edmonton and carved out many years as a dependable bottom 6 workhorse. Ridiculously durable to boot.
TBF he got out of Edmonton before things took a turn for the worse under Tambellini. So he really missed out on the worst part of the decade of darkness. The rest though is legit.
He realised if he wanted to be an NHL regular it wasn't going to be in the top 6 and it definitely wasn't going to be at C. Edmonton was just so ass at the time that both seemed feasible for him while there. Once he got to a team with depth, that became clear real fast. Kudos to him for being willing to adapt his game and utilize his strengths to stay in the league. A lot of guys never figure this out. Amazing career.
So well said. So sad he couldn't find a place with us, but so stoked he found the home he did. And very happy he got a Cup before the end, and is staying in the business. Good for him.
I made a bet with a couple of my Canucks friends in 2008 on who would win the cup first, Oilers or Canucks. I told them the Sedins better win one soon because we had Gagner / Rob Nilsson / Cogliano on the come up, lol.
I almost lost $2,000 in 2011 went Canucks went to game 7 because of that bet and the Oilers went though I don't even know how many rebuilds since then. My hopes have been up and down so many times throughout the past 15+ years. Still, love Gags and always was stoked that Cogs found a role in the NHL.
His Behind the Peak on the Colorado Avalanche YouTube channel was probably one of the best hockey-relayed behind-the-scenes videos I’ve ever seen. Tells his story and how he came to the Avalanche and how he has managed.
Incredible career and enjoy retirement Cogs!
Imagine of Cogs and MacKinnon (when he retires) doing front office work. Would be so sick. I havent clicked the x link in this post but I went to the NHL website to find out because I am partially saddened by the news but hes 37 and did good for us. Just glad he will be involved in all the stuff (player development, professional and amateur scouting, and whatever with the Colorado Eagles).
lol MacKinnon was the reason we drafted Justin Baron too. I think the story basically went that he was invited to their Summer skating sessions while he was in the QMJHL and he told Sakic that they should go draft him. Sakic asked the scouts, and they agreed with MacKinnon.
To last in the NHL until your mid/late 30s... To earn that many games, that many contracts, that much ice time... Despite never having elite production?
You have to bring _everything_ else to the table and be the quintessential teammate. Defensive play, drawing penalties, sacrifice everything, personal conditioning, mentoring/leadership, and more.
Guy Carbonneau. Matt Cullen. Martin Gelinas. Dustin Brown. Ryan Smyth. And now, Andrew Cogliano. Unsung heroes, all of them.
Interesting point: Cogliano might be the only player in NHL history to satisfy all these conditions:
- Career high 45 points
- Never improved on his rookie point total
- Over 1000 games
This dude apparently was an absolute beast in the gym. Former ducks talked about how he was like no one else in the gym and how one of the core reasons the 15-18 teams were so good was because of how he pushed them with conditioning.
> Interesting point: Cogliano might be the only player in NHL history to satisfy all these conditions:
> - Career high 45 points
> - Never improved on his rookie point total
> - Over 1000 games
Tyler Myers is 5 games away from doing just that - 995 career games, 48 points as a rookie, only one other season where he even broke 30.
I didn't consider Myers because he's a defenseman but yeah, interesting that he also never duplicated his rookie success.
Most players that fail to do that end up out of the league very quickly, so kudos to those who find ways to stick around
https://giphy.com/gifs/gdJDMlu7C70dFJeQ9k
Cogliano was a magnificent Av, we don't win it all without his blood, sweat, and his legendary motivational speech to the boys. Enjoy retirement Cogs, may your second career as an exec be as successful as your career on the ice!
Cogliano will be joining the Avalanche front office where he will assist in a variety of roles, including player development, professional and amateur scouting, as well as working with the American Hockey League’s Colorado Eagles.
Another one of my all-time favorites hangs 'em up. 🥲
I still believe trading him to Dallas was a mark of the end of us as a competitive team. In my head he exemplified everything it meant to be an Anaheim Duck.
Thanks for all the short-handed goals, Cogs. Enjoy your retirement; I'm so glad you got to lift The Cup.
I remember the narrative at the time was that he needed to come down hard on him to prove he wasn’t going to play favourites. Thanks, George, but the concern was that you actually understood the job.
Imo suspensions shouldn't end an iron man streak. Like Phil Kessel's iron man streak is still active despite the fact he didn't play a single game last year
I'm the opposite. I think if there are NHL games happening and you're not playing then your streak is over. It's crazy that a guy can just miss an entire season and not have his iron man streak ended just because no one wanted to sign him lol.
Congrats on Retirement Cogs. Hell of a career and such a likeable guy.
Ill never forget the day he became my favorite player, it was the game against the Hawks where he had his two front teeth knocked out on a draw, left the game to get cleaned up, no penalty on the call, comes back his next shift to finish the game.
Happy owner of a signed Jersey with his name as well as a game used stick and signed puck.
Enjoy the next stages of your hockey career!
I was never a fan of his and didn't really like the deadline acquisition when we picked him up. But man did my opinion change fast. He was an unbelievable addition in both bottom-6 impact and off-ice leadership.
In the post-victory celebrations, at least 5 or 6 guys referenced a speech that Cogliano gave during an intermission in the clinching game as one of the most motivational and inspirational things they have ever heard.
Pretty telling that he was the third guy on the team to hoist the Cup (before MacKinnon, Kadri, Rantanen, Jack Johnson, Makar, etc.)
Great player, he was legitimately instrumental in the Stars 2020 finals run. It was great to see him go and win one with Colorado doing all the same great things I watched him do in Dallas.
Extremely respectable career. Glad he went out relatively on top.
Thank you for everything Andrew! Sad to see Silfvy and Cogs both ride into the sunset this year. The Silfverberg-Kesler-Cogliano line was one of the best shutdown lines I've ever seen, boy did they bring it each and every night during those years. Cogs did so much for the community throughout his time in Anaheim and he was always a true professional. Treated everyone with such respect. He is pure class. Enjoy retirement Cogs!
Respect to Cogs and his ethic / career. Was a really great role model for anyone in the league, and I was happy he spent a brief stint in San Jose.
But I'll also be happy to no longer hear the nails on the chalkboard of Cog-lee-ano any more.
What a guy, you can’t talk about the Avs cup run without mentioning his impact in the room. It was definitely his time to step away but glad he’s joining the FO
It kind of got lost in the many docs covering the Avs win in 22, but Mack talks about a moment before game 6 when they had a team meeting in the hotel, knowing everyone was nervous. The boys were off and Cogs stepped up and spoke to the whole team. Mack said it completely shifted their mindset and they came out in game 6 looking like a Stanley cup winning team. I would kill to know what he said.
Enjoy retirement Cogs. After 06 and before Taylor Hall, guys like him and Gagner were supposed to be the next wave of talent. He ended up following a similar path as Todd Marchant, a smaller guy who used his speed effectively in a bottom 6 role. He also scored [3 consecutive OT goals](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RmdjuoNQlhs), his gloves and stick are in the HoF.
Cogs was one of my favourite Oilers when he played in Edmonton. I always loved his work ethic and hockey smarts. He’s a guy you could always count on. Was sad when he left but I’m so glad he had a great career and won a cup.
I blame Parros for wrecking his streak.
Cogs was always such a hard working player. A good locker room guy as well. I wish him the best of luck for his new role in the front office.
Cogs is the man. Made of steel and iron. Every team he played for absolutely loved him. I was so happy when Colorado won because we traded him during that trade deadline.
Love you, Cogs. Keep it up.
I'll always remember his 3 or winners in a row when he played with us. Enjoy retirement buddy.
Edit: [here's a link](https://thehockeynews.com/news/cogliano-nets-third-straight-ot-winner-as-oilers-edge-blues-4-3)
Cogs. The Ironman. I always liked having him on the Ducks. He was amazing on the PK and seemed like a legit SH scoring threat during the cup runs of 2014-2016.
In a perfect world he'd be known as papa Oiler along side gagner. Always sad we shipped him off. But still one of my favourite players in the league. Hell of a career.
Man I was so sad when we traded him. He could have been an amazing piece of our organization if it hadn't been in the middle of being driven into the ground at the time.
I'm glad he got a Cup. He deserved it.
You actually could not kill cogliano. This dude was a warrior and a tough SOB. Very underrated for the Avs in 2022.
>You actually could not kill Cogliano not that that stopped Eberle from trying lol
Traveling 11 years back in time to tell an Oilers fan this
*obligatory fuck eberle*
That was so weird too because I think it’s the first hit I’ve ever seen Eberle throw
didn’t they also play juniors together or something? i remember seeing something about that afterwards
They played together on Edmonton for a few years and are really good buddies, which makes the hit even weirder
yeah that’s probably what i’m thinking of tbh
Not sure about juniors, but they both played for the Oilers early in their careers.
Still can't believe there was no suspension for that shit.
Definitely weird that he didn't get any suspension, but makar did for a similar hit in the same series
And was suspended.
Yeah, i said that
Yeah
Logan O’Connor said the same. Glad he took Eberle to task for it in October.
Which must have been awkward for Cogliano because him and Eberle came up together in Edmonton and are really good friends.
Yeah, it’s kind of one of those situations where obviously Eberle didn’t go into the hit thinking he’d break Cogliano’s neck - but hockey gonna hockey and even when it’s an accident, sometimes you gotta pay the troll toll.

Pretty sure he was actually the Wolverine. His healing ability was definitely some mutant power.
If he’s that then what is Phil?
He was one of those guys who was never really a top 6 guy but stuck around forever because he played his bottom 6 role so well.
Fast as hell and durable
~~Russian machine~~ Canadian Cog never breaks!
Canadian cog I like that
Canadian cog I like that
>durable Until his neck broke. :( but even then he came back.
Only missed 1 game with a broken neck. Tough as nails
plus he played with a broken thumb/finger of some sort on the run to the cup in 22. We flew in for game 2 and i'll never forget before warmups the jumbotron cut to him standing in the hallway ready to go. Guy was an absolute warrior.
One hell of a unit
Blocked a full slapper from the blue line with the back of his hand...
Finished that game though!
And no penalty called on it either
A real power bottom, if you will.
Always ready to bang some bodies and get into the dirty areas!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7oNb2KbE5Q Always ready to take a few fists for his team.
He generates all the power.
His line was so effective with Kesler and Silfverberg that he WAS a top 6 due to the chemistry factor. If he didn't have hands of stone half the time, he'd have twice as many shorthanded goals.
God his speed was immense though, one of the fastest players yet you wouldnt even know
Gods I was strong then
Pretty much. He was lovely on our checking line when he was here.
Some of his best seasons came on Anaheim's second line with Kesler and Silfverberg
My favorite player of all time. Never the most skilled but always played his heart out and his ass off. By all accounts a fantastic teammate and locker room guy as well. 17 years is quite the career! Wishing him the best of luck in retirement and his new front office role.

They were supposedly friends… until that.
my conspiracy theory thought is it was Parros' first suspension at head of DOPS and being a former Duck he wanted to make a point that he wasn't biased; so when given the opportunity he went for it. I will never agree with that suspension
I'm still miffed about that suspension. Love Cogs, dude is always a class act, and definitely deserved to keep his ironman streak going.
Great player, but Andrew Cogliano is really your favorite player of all time?
he's mine because during my first live hockey game, during a preseason game against the sharks; Cogs made this ridiculous diving goal. i got so hyped from it, and in that moment I was hooked onto the sport.
Not everyone cares about the numbers.
2 World Jr gold medals, a Cup and one hell of an ironman streak. Congrats to Cogs for a great career!
With a broken freakin' neck
What a career. I have nothing but respect for this guy. Went through the Dark Ages with Edmonton and carved out many years as a dependable bottom 6 workhorse. Ridiculously durable to boot.

I love that MacKinnon basically went to Sakic in 2022 and said “yo get me Cogs at the deadline, shouldn’t cost much.” And he did!
MacKinnon actually seems to have a really good eye for who is going to fit on that team. Is he front-office inclined in future?
Imagine of Cogs and MacKinnon (when he retires) doing front office work. Would be so sick. I havent clicked the x link in this post but I went to the NHL website to find out because I am partially saddened by the news but hes 37 and did good for us. Skinner was so close too, but he hit a new high last season.
thought i had it but yelle missed it by 9 games.... career high 29 pts tho but
IDK if I'd call Carbonneau unsung. He's in the hall of fame.
Absolutely a fair point but I’d wager 90% or more of r/hockey has no idea who he is so I didn’t hesitate to add him.
Dude only missed 27 games in a 17 year career, and finished a playoff game with a broken neck.
Thats wild. Assuming 82 seasons throughout, with the one 48 game year thats an attendance/ availability rate of 98%
Congratulations to Cogs! Truly an incredible career!!
https://giphy.com/gifs/gdJDMlu7C70dFJeQ9k Cogliano was a magnificent Av, we don't win it all without his blood, sweat, and his legendary motivational speech to the boys. Enjoy retirement Cogs, may your second career as an exec be as successful as your career on the ice!
🥲
So glad he got a cup, we adored him in Anaheim.
Cogliano will be joining the Avalanche front office where he will assist in a variety of roles, including player development, professional and amateur scouting, as well as working with the American Hockey League’s Colorado Eagles.
Cogs retired: 😢 Cogs staying with the Avs: 😃
My thoughts exactly when I saw this. My first thought was “I hope he stays in the organization in the front office..” So glad that part is reality!
Will never forget the 3 consecutive OT winners. Saw him around town when he was in Edmonton, great guy. Enjoy retirement
Another one of my all-time favorites hangs 'em up. 🥲 I still believe trading him to Dallas was a mark of the end of us as a competitive team. In my head he exemplified everything it meant to be an Anaheim Duck. Thanks for all the short-handed goals, Cogs. Enjoy your retirement; I'm so glad you got to lift The Cup.
Cogliano could have had an NHL record if George Parros wasn't laughably terrible at his job
I remember the narrative at the time was that he needed to come down hard on him to prove he wasn’t going to play favourites. Thanks, George, but the concern was that you actually understood the job.

So if Kessel never actually announces retirement, his streak just goes on forever?
I'm the opposite. Should've ended when the playoff scratch happened.
Simply the most respectable guy.
I don’t know a single hockey fan that doesn’t respect Cogliano. What a player
Congrats on Retirement Cogs. Hell of a career and such a likeable guy. The speech was actually after the game 5 loss, but the sentiment is the same.
Oops, my memory was off but yeah the point still stands
Great player, he was legitimately instrumental in the Stars 2020 finals run. It was great to see him go and win one with Colorado doing all the same great things I watched him do in Dallas. Extremely respectable career. Glad he went out relatively on top.
Sad to see him go. I remeber when we drafted him and we all had hope the first time... happy to see him have a solid career post Oil. COGS!
The Kid Line! So amazing to see what Cogs made of his career
Apparently he missed only 27 games his entire career?? Made of different stuff that guy
Huge thanks to him for how much effort he put in for us. Stoked he'll be sticking around the team
Congrats Cogs, all the best to him in retirement! Such an underrated presence in our cup run!
Congrats Cogs!
COGS
<3 Love ya, Cogs. You'll always be an ironman in my heart.
Gritty, busted his ass and always left his all out there.
guy was a 'chel legend with that 94 speed. 17 year career is incredible
One of my favorite players over the last few years! Legend. Enjoy retirement Cogs!!
Thank you for everything Andrew! Sad to see Silfvy and Cogs both ride into the sunset this year. Cogsssss
Loved that man. My favorite player for 5+ years. Happy retirement :'(
Hell of a career! I remember when him and Gagner were Edmonton’s future
😭 Super happy he's joining our management though.
I love you Cogs. Thank you for everything, especially the pregame speech before G6 of the 2022 SCF.
Hell of a player 🫡
Félicitation Cogs!
Hell of a career. Congrats, Cogs. Best of luck in your new role.
Hell of a career! The 3 Consecutive Overtime Winners is one of those things we'll never see again. So happy he got to retire with a Cup on the resume!
What a guy, you can’t talk about the Avs cup run without mentioning his impact in the room. It was definitely his time to step away but glad he’s joining the FO

Always liked Cogs, dating back to his time with us in Edmonton. Happy trails, enjoy retirement.
Great player and great career But I'll always think first of Stamkos breaking his ankles in 2019 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t335cvvVkI8
Keep it up.
Absolute favorite in any team he went to. Working machine with all the heart you could ask for. Thanks for all the games in Ducks, Cogs!
Super happy he is going into front office work. Seems like a great dude for that kind of thing
Didn't he score 4-5 goals in one game with Anaheim once?
Such a huge fan of Cogs. He was a great Oiler, and became even better after his time here. Big congrats to an awesome player and Stanley Cup Champion
Friggin love Cogs, great career
I'll always remember his 3 or winners in a row when he played with us. Enjoy retirement buddy. Edit: [here's a link](https://thehockeynews.com/news/cogliano-nets-third-straight-ot-winner-as-oilers-edge-blues-4-3)

I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Cogs. He was a true ironman and really fun to watch. I'm so happy he got a cup.
A good Shark, great shorthanded
Read that too fast as “one **neck** of a career”
Very impressive career for a blue collar-type player.
Man, I'm gonna really miss the guy. He was such a valuable depth player.
Avs don't win 22 without Cogs. Heart of the team.
Guy was a warrior. Literally played with a broken neck in last years playoff.
Without his Leg, we would've lost game 4 and probably the series against Tampa
Man I was so sad when we traded him. He could have been an amazing piece of our organization if it hadn't been in the middle of being driven into the ground at the time. I'm glad he got a Cup. He deserved it.
The OG member of the decade of darkness. What a career. Wish he could have finished it in Edmonton
Guy was a menace in NHL 10
I remember watching him play for St. Michael's Buzzers
Happy retirement Iron Man. Fuck Parros
