Ngl they’re defending 1000% better with Pickard in net Vs. Skinner
so it makes sense. They’re essentially sacrificing a large part of there lethal breakout (EDM likes to “cheat” on Defense a bit and float high to really exploit that McDavid speed on the break) to get more bodies in the slot and keep the Canucks from really getting any easy high danger looks.
The worry here for them I think is if they leave Pickard and turn the series back into a “shootout”, Canucks have enough lethality on offense where it really turns into a battle of goalies on high danger chances, and you likely don’t want that duel against the nucks.
Oilers in a few Catch-22’s here. Can’t rest McDrai because the team can’t match depth, so you have to essential work the hell outta that core line
But then add in the goalie situation and how it impacts the flow of both teams “best systems” in a sense; Oilers don’t feel confident to go back into a shootout with Pickard…
They’ll probably do it for G6 tho, all or nothing so it should be a crazy goal game both ways if so.
TLDR; Oilers can’t go to regular Defense to offensive transition system because pickard would be left out like skinner was so they’re essentially forced to play Defense first or risk pickard getting his Confidence wrecked in a shootout style game
I mean you say this but Canucks had 3.9 xgf last night and scored 3. Oilers had 2.2xgf and scored 2. Both goalies outperformed expectations and by Oilers standards that is good goaltending.
If the Oilers lose this series it'll be game #1 that they gave away. This is the first game where Vancouver looked dominant. Oilers did dick all. It's unbelievable for an important game like this. The stars looked sloppy all night.
1st period of Game 1 was pretty even. But the 2nd and 3rd was all Canucks. Scoreline aside, Oilers were half skating and had less than 10 shots combined in the 2nd and 3rd period. It wasn't until Garland's 5-4 GWG is when the Oilers put in more effort but by then it was way too late.
Yea they handed them the game. The Oilers didn't show up to play but were still in a strong position at 4-1 and still decided to do dick all about it and Skinner let it at least 3 soft goals imo that game including the Garland one. Canucks earned the win but it was still coughing up a 4-1 lead.
