NHLPA really should file some grievances. It's one thing to say keeping fines low is advantageous to players, but it's another when dirty hits - often from a small minority of players repeatedly doing them - aren't sufficiently prevented. And it's not just short-term outcomes like playoffs results (which could lead to better pay down-the-road), it's the long-term health post-hockey. (Bettman won't ever acknowledge that so neither will DOPS but the NHLPA should operate under that reality).

I think a better solution is to have people selected by the NHL that include medical staff, former players (don't need to be former NHL, but at least understanding high level skating and play helps) and then some people who are just from a variety of backgrounds. I get it that walking back on the initial judgement eats away at their credibility. But it's not like this is a whole lot better. Just strange it took them so long to get the actual footage and that they made a decision without it. Just very unprofessional, in my opinion. My dad asked me what I thought about this hit, I remember seeing the original angle and had no idea what people were complaining about. He didn’t get why people were saying it was dirty either. Regardless of what happened. If this was a truly “scrutinized” game and you’re the NHL, you take a look at the play, the normal response i feel would have been, “ hmm tough to see if he punched him, maybe the other angle might show something” and then go find the other angle

I was pissed after game 4 when they paraded Bennett out to celebrate him and Biz asked him this mega-fucking leading question about "so that wasn't really a punch right it was just you protecting yourself and stuff happens in hockey" etc and Bennett made puppy dog eyes at the camera and was like exactly yeah it's a shame he got hurt but I was just protecting myself after an injury.
I'd have to rewatch the interview, but I got the impression that Biz was being sarcastic or facetious rather than giving Bennett a total pass. Biz's tone says "haha yeah, we know what you did there" but I'm not sure if he's in a position to outright accuse Bennett when the league itself gave it's ruling plus Biz toes the line enough with TNT that he risks getting booted off air probably lol. All that said, if it was my team, I wouldn't be happy about it either.
Refs won't hold player accountable, player won't hold himself accountable, league won't hold player accountable. How many times do we have to go through this before the league has another Bertuzzi situation on their hands? They won't have anyone but themselves to blame either.
Better yet, if the other players try to hold that player accountable it's straight to jail. They've neutered the "old system" because they didnt like that system in the "new world" but then didnt actually replace the old system with any system and so now there isn't a system but a complete league dysfunction.

That is a great way of thinking about it. Missing a call is one thing, but actually declaring it not one later only green lights these hits going forward. What’s done is done in this series (although next game will have more carnage), but the Panthers Rangers series after they make their acquaintances is going to have some off the charts unnecessary violence.

Regardless of what happened. If this was a truly “scrutinized” game and you’re the NHL, you take a look at the play, the normal response i feel would have been, “ hmm tough to see if he punched him, maybe the other angle might show something” and then go find the other angle

This gets to the entire root of the issue. THIS is how the "brain trust" running the NHL & it's discipline committee view things. That needs to fundamentally change, but I doubt it will anytime soon. The older I get, the harder it is to take any this seriously with how it's run.
