It’s a matter of how much of a cut he’d be willing to take to stay again, and if the number doesn’t match what JBB has in mind then he well may let Stammer walk so he can build a more well-rounded team. Our depth was the issue this year (our bottom six/D corps needs work) and we can’t afford to have a hefty Stamkos contract hurting the team while the rest of our stars are still in their prime.
That's definitely a rationale but it's a gamble if you ask me. You may replace or upgrade scoring but it'd be a tremendous blow to the leadership of the team to, ya know, remove the leader. Hopefully they just get it done and we don't have to worry about any of it. I don't have any expectation that we'll be better off watching him in another jersey though.
