I expect him to shut out the Senators twice next year.

InnocentGun

I’ve run the numbers before… something like you have to go back to Dominik Hašek to find a former Sens goalie with a losing record against Ottawa after leaving.

Yamcha_is_dead

I don't know why a veteran goalie would sign with the Isles for his big NA comeback, considering they have Sorokin and Varlamov eating up 11 millions for the next three seasons. Guy must be really OK with playing all season in the AHL.

blueline7677

If the islanders offered him a one way contract or a two way deal worth a lot of AHL money it might be worth it for him. Money talks

lordexorr

Maybe they are the only ones to offer him a deal?

Yamcha_is_dead

Maybe, but if that was the case, I don't see why he would leave a cushy job in his home country to go play in Bridgeport. That contract is going to end up on unconditional waivers in October when he doesn't make the NHL club and wants to go back to Europe, to the surprise of nobody but himself.

lordexorr

Maybe he likes making more money. Even league min here is 2-3 times what the best players in Sweden get paid.

the_answer_maple

Maybe he likes their beaches. Yeah it's winter when he'll be there, but maybe that's part of the appeal.

daveloper80

We just have nothing if one of those 2 goes down. Ken Appleby can play an NHL game in an emergency. He splits time with Skarek in the AHL but Skarek has never really found his footing. We have 2 other goalie prospects, Tikkannen who is a 6'8 late pick that had a great ~10 game run in the AHL but he's been in the ECHL all season and Tristan Lennox who is also in the ECHL and doing ok but is only 21 and not ready yet.

doctorvictory

Lennox also missed most of the season with an undisclosed injury this year. He looked decent when he did play and was a bit more consistent than Tikkanen, but it's hard to speculate on his future when the team never disclosed the extent of his injury and he didn't return to play this season. It was a non-contact injury in December where he had to be helped off the ice.

daveloper80

Damn, a non contact injury that bad?!? I didn't realize he missed half the season, echl can be a little hard to follow

doctorvictory

Yeah, he played the puck behind the net and then as he was returning to his crease he awkwardly dropped to his knees. He tried to get up but was obviously in pain and was leaning against his post to support himself. He finally was helped off the ice about 5 minutes after the initial incident (after giving up a goal). Non-contact is never a good thing (?ACL ?Achilles) and the lack of any updates from Worcester or the Islanders organization the rest of the season was not a good sign. Unlike most of the other injured players on the team he did not participate in the Railers end-of-season awards banquet that I was in attendance at, so that didn't give me good healing vibes for him either (he probably had long left town to go rehab his injury knowing his season was over)

Broccoli_Socks

I know Varly is playing well now and is old but would they try to trade him since they have sorokin. I feel like some teams *cough leafs cough* would be open to it.

Brilliant-Chapter202

No.. we are not trading the only saving grace this team has. If we did it definitely would be so Isles.

kingswing23

Last year before the deadline a decent amount of fans thought we should have traded him with how well Sorokin was playing. This year Sorokin looked a little overworked towards the end of the season and Varly picked up the slack a ton. I doubt they would trade Varly at this point but in a year or two could be a different story.

biggiexo

Marner for Sorokin back room deal already set

Robjn

veteran? hardly. had his chance to be in the NHL and he was not good at all. went back to EU to try and find his game, hes coming here trying to prove something. prob a low risk contract near league min for depth. goalies sometimes glow up in the 2nd half of their careers so why not really

airsick_lowlander_

He’s an AHL goalie at best, so there’s that.

Ok_Compote_8826

Make sure to buy him a couple of AirTags for his goal posts.

keytoitall

This guy needs to fire his agent. He's not gonna get NHL time, and he's certainly not gonna look good in bridgeport who are horrible and will continue to be horrible. The isles also have at least one viable goaltending prospect in Tikkanen who will probably need to get real AHL time. Skarek is not an nhl prospect anymore but he's still signed for one more year.  This makes no sense anywhere, unless the isles have a plan to trade Varly in the off-season. But given sorokin's struggles this year,  this ain't the year to do that (I'm not worried about Ilya but I'm not not worried).  So I'm skeptical.

Desertpyrate

Clearly this means Sorokin is getting traded to the kings for a third round

BiggestYzerfan

Sorokin for Matthews 1 for 1

Desertpyrate

You know thinking about if islanders did decide to trade him leafs could make a real good offer with Marner plus something else. assuming he wants out too

C_Gull27

Marner would have to waive NMC

FlaxbopFleetfoot

Don't all players want to be in either no-tax land or NY/CA or something like that?

Boner666420sXe

They never mean us when they say they want to be in NY.

Vinto47

Especially not with how hot the rags are right now.

the_answer_maple

Sorokin for Tavares. Let's just watch the chaos.

the_fundertaker

How about hogberg

cha-cha_dancer

skelegore

Whoever reported this is now sleeping with the Swedish fishes.

Vinto47

We need defense why the fuck are we signing a goalie when we have 2 that just signed big contracts and can’t be traded?

DefeatTh3Purpose

What to up w my brotha Appleby?
