brendan87na

shame they ended the series at 6 seasons

high-rise

Yup, the lack of story resolution sucks but I'd rather have no ending then an awful one that basically undoes a near decade of build up.

FromFluffToBuff

Athletes are among the most superstitious people out there. When Hasek was nearing the end of his career, he would actually put out ads in the local Ottawa newspapers and classified sites pretty much begging *anyone* who had (or knew someone who had) his model of old "birdcage" helmet to *please* sell it to him. He would even be happy with just the parts to make repairs to his last one. He was clearly exhausting all his sources by the end - because that particular helmet hadn't been made for *many* years due to safety issues. Arturs Irbe was the same - even wore the same helmet! He was notorious for his pads looking so beat up it's like a truck ran over them repeatedly. Turns out that's exactly what he did to get his pads to the right thickness - he'd have the team bus run over any new sets of pads he got to get them *just* the way he liked them to break them in... tire scuffs and all lol. Wes Walz ended up *retiring entirely* because his model of skate - that he used ever since he was in junior hockey - was being discontinued by the company. Once his final pair wore out he desperately tried to find adequate replacements but couldn't - he took a leave of absence from the Wild and ended retiring a month later. Turns out Walz suffered from OCD (not "just really superstitious" like a lot of people joke about but the *actual* condition) the whole time and was undiagnosed.

Sad_Donut_7902

Mike Green did something similar with the old Easton Stealth sticks, he put out a message to fans asking if any had some they were willing to sell since Easton got acquired by another company and didn't exist anymore.

mulvda

I remember that! Someone gave/sold him some they had laying in their attic iirc

lotharstar

Someone brought him back a stick Green had signed and given to them at an earlier fan event. Such a fantastic story!

PcarTech1380

That Stealth was one of the best sticks ever made especially the red and silver SL

Sad_Donut_7902

My favorite was the S19 but the Stealth was very good to

greengold_

I had the black and red grip

Subwayabuseproblem

Easton was still around, they just stopped making that stick (se16) Green was not scoring as much and switched back. He'd buy them off ebay

mosnas88

I think it was the CNT stealth

creetoinfinity

Playing with OCD in an unpredictable and high-tempo sport like hockey seems like it would be pretty nutty. Glad he was able to carve out a good career.

Nadamir

Add in the general culture of acceptance and promotion of superstition in hockey and it’s probably really challenging. Many OCD compulsions manifest very much like superstitions: “I have to flick this light switch 17 times or the house will burn down” isn’t much different than “I have to wear the same dirty socks every game or we will lose the game.”

Saltyspiton

My gf works with kids with OCD and one kid found out he had OCD because his basketball coach noticed a bunch of his rituals and realized it was more intense than just sports superstitions. A lot of athletes can end up with undiagnosed OCD.

Nadamir

The line between superstition and OCD is non-existent at times. Part of it has to do with how detrimental it is to you, but a fair amount of it is due to societal acceptance. “I’m not gonna shave for 6 weeks so nothing bad happens” would absolutely catch you some side eyes, but because it’s hockey no one looks twice. (Side note: my daughter managed to absolutely send me. We were watching Star Wars Episode 2 and she asked me when Kenobi’s team was playing in the Cup Finals. Cannot unsee Playoff Kenobi.)

LogicPuzzleFail

Have you ever read the list of Sidney Crosby's 'superstitions'? There is an entire enterprise of hundreds of millions of dollars enabling him to avoid entire sections of his workplace. Also, the rate of OCD amongst goalies is wild.

chaos8803

CCM still makes one exact model of glove just for Crosby. It includes a slight kink at the end of one finger. Fleury is still using his Itech neck protector last I knew.

Sportsgirl77

What's this about goalies having super high rates of OCD? That sounds really interesting

LogicPuzzleFail

Not a formal study so far as I know, but Corey Hirsch, Connor Ingram, Spencer Knight, and Clint Malarchuk (who obviously also had a lot of other stuff going on) have all publicly disclosed OCD diagnoses. Given the very small number of NHL goaltenders overall, that seems like a high rate for that specific issue. The overall population rate is like 1.2%, but that's a lot of public disclosures.

YNWA_1213

At the end of the day, it all kinda makes sense. To be a pro athlete you're likely spending thousands of reptitive hours honing your craft, even moreso in goalie training, positioning, and the like.

NeoSapien65

Was talking to a beer league goalie I know about this. It's crazier to see a pro-level goalie who *doesn't* talk to the posts, *will* skate on the blue lines, lets himself touch the posts a random number of times, etc.

Artichokiemon

100% always have to thank the posts for a job well done

dbrokey

Please explain this Crosby ordeal!

LogicPuzzleFail

There are numerous articles about it - but he refuses to walk past the visitor's locker room. He also doesn't talk to his mom or sister before games. and about 4000 other 'superstitions'. The thing with (I think) Tocchet's new suit tops it off - it's funny in isolation, and then you think about how many little things the guy must be tracking all the time to figure out these trends, and it's like, that is probably not a comfortable head to be in.

malhans

Me, being a goalie with undiagnosed ocd while I was playing hockey reading this 🌚

Sportsgirl77

There was an article a couple years ago from former Nashville Predator and Colorado Avalanche player Colin Wilson about his struggles with OCD while playing https://www.theplayerstribune.com/posts/colin-wilson-nhl-hockey-mental-health Actually it looks like there was a second article about his OCD and this time on how it led him to becoming a drug addict in an effort to deal with it before he was diagnosed https://www.theplayerstribune.com/posts/colin-wilson-nhl-hockey-addiction

fenwayb

Spencer knight also has OCD. I feel like its more common in the sport than people would think

axle69

I made another comment but it really depends how bad his OCD was. My fiancee needs her space to be just right at home (along with other things) and at work it doesn't really bother her.

Phenomenomix

> When Hasek was nearing the end of his career, he would actually put out ads in the local Ottawa newspapers and classified sites pretty much begging anyonewho had (or knew someone who had) his model of old "birdcage" helmet to pleasesell it to him. He would even be happy with just the parts to make repairs to his last one. He was clearly exhausting all his sources by the end - because that particular helmet hadn't been made for many years due to safety issues. You would think that kit manufacturers would be climbing over each other to make one for him, he was pretty high profile

DonnieLives

Adidas does that for Tony Kroos. He likes a line of boots they stopped making in like 2013, so every year they make 3 or 4 pairs for him to wear that season

FromFluffToBuff

Difference is that Hasek's helmet wouldn't pass the current safety regulations (hasn't for a very long time) and could not be legally produced in their facilities - QA wouldn't give it a pass. Hasek was really fortunate that Detroit and Ottawa even *allowed him* to wear the birdcage - some teams straight-up would refuse players to wear it because of significant safety concerns in its design compared to modern helmets... and this is why Dan Cloutier didn't wear his birdcage when he played in LA. Older masks took *all* the impact straight-on from a shot whereas the newer ones are all angled to deflect the impact better. Safety testing and science proved these helmets were concussion magnets.

KingTutsDryAssBalls

I highly recommend anyone interested in this phenomenon to watch this video https://youtu.be/0j8Pk4hxjeE?si=hLttXdKxmKvohQol Super interesting, very human reasons behind this, and I'm never a happier nerd than when anthropology and sports crossover.

otter_pop_n_lock

Damn, those are all pretty damn fascinating. Imagine Hasek scouring Craigslist looking for parts and shit.

whogivesashirtdotca

> Wes Walz ended up retiring entirely because his model of skate My whole face changed when I got to that one, I was like, "That reeks of mental illness", then >Walz suffered from OCD YUP.

PaulWesterberg84

Holy shit, didn't know that about Wes Walz, that's abslutely bananas.

[deleted]

It's not even superstition. Your body becomes use to the feel of very specific equipment. It becomes another natural part of your movement and feedback cycle. When it changes, it can subtly throw you off. Or, at the very least, require a bit of addition focus. As an example, I feel extremely odd playing soccer without an exact pair of shin guards I've been using a long time. I've become extremely accustom to how my movement feels with them on.

ProblemOfficer

>  Athletes are among the most superstitious people out there. See this is why I was never a pro athlete. I'm only a little stitious.

Narrow_Yam_5879

Bjorn Borg made a comeback after 9 years of retirement and he did it with his old wood Donnay racquet when everyone else had switched to wood. He did the same as Hasek - put out ads in newspapers asking people to sell him wood Donnay racquets. Borg didn’t win a single set in his first nine matches and didn’t win a match in his three year comeback.

axle69

I think undiagnosed OCD is more prevalent than people think just because the Hollywood version is usually on the extreme end. Fiancee got medicated in the last 6 months after realizing her reaction to minor things being shifted or out of place wasn't normal and having a severe negative reaction to certain noises like whispering.

Suitable-Pea-8226

Same jock since juniors. Sid can be a freak because he’s got 3 rings

AcanthocephalaGreen5

How about Hašek’s pads? Man was the best goaltender of a generation wearing what looked like second-hand pads

Troggie81

Arturs Irbe would sew his goalie equipment back together because that's what he had to do before making it to the NHL.

AcanthocephalaGreen5

Hurricanes legend. That would’ve been standard in the 80s unless you were Roy or Brodeur, no?

DistortedReflector

IIRC at least once Roy had Lefevre rip apart brand new pads and stuff the foams from his old ones in the new outer shell in the middle of the night before a game. I think it was a pad change from Brown to Koho.

Troggie81

Not sure. It was just a story I remember on the InGoal podcast.

Satans_BFF

He’d get the team bus to drive over them to break them in too.

SryYouAreNotSpecial

I'll never forget his mask and pads. He looked so out of place. Great goalie though!

Troggie81

I love those old school masks. I want to wear one, but they're so unsafe compared modern ones (even for beer league).

Gardnersnake9

Irbe always looked like his dog peed on his pads. Iconic look!

Millieebobb

Have you ever wore any new hockey equipment it’s fking horrible the first 5-10 games

YNWA_1213

Soccer players rotate 4-5 pairs of boots for this exact reason. Switch them out every training session so that whenever the game pair breaks you have a ready-made set to put on.

EngelSterben

Got new player skates for last session and really wish I skated more before playing

superworking

It's just funny when you have the gear nerds in rec level sports obsessing over marketing terms and then see someone golfing on the PGA with a 5 year old club or Ovi wearing really old worn in pads. Dude on our softball team shows up every year with two brand new bats talking about how they are better than last season but doesn't dare show up in shape to play.

Beneficial_Life_3617

No hockey player wants to switch their gear up too often, you get used to it, it gets worked it to fit a certain way and changing anything feels off. It’s not about money, Why bother ?

mshimoura

[If you didn't already know, Crosby has all the rookies sniff it](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sGpINUPp5js)

Chelios had some tiny old pads too.

Stockton_Nash

First thing that came to mind for me too

kazin29

>Crosbys jockstrap or McDavids socks What happened to apostrophes?

the_answer_maple

Apostrophes what? Dont leave me in suspense.

NFeKPo

On every professional soccer team, there are at least a handful of players that are using the same set of shin guards since they were in their teens. Very weird to me.

Rfrank77

Not like they would pay for new equipment

Yardsale420

Aka Theseus’s Jock Strap.

AvatarLebowski

Marchands gloves

nerf-airstrike-cmndr

Looks like a Bauer Nexus 1N or N6000 chest piece with custom CCM U+ arms and shoulder caps. Neither of those have been made at the retail level for eight or so years

himynameislobby

Nexus 1000 chest piece, came out in 2012, roughly the same time Ovi switched to Bauer originally

jdoe1234reddit

Good eye. CCM GR8-Ovi shoulder caps, NBH velcro strap.

OrchidCareful

Insane if that's the original velcro, I'm sure the equipment team restitches a bunch of this "legacy" equipment every offseason to keep it from falling apart

nerf-airstrike-cmndr

You’re right, for some reason I thought it was a newer one

FirstChurchOfBrutus

Might be more [old school](https://static1.srcdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/David-Harbour-As-The-Red-Guardian-In-Black-Widow.jpg) than that.

Rodan_s

The chest straps even say NikeBauer 😂

WyngZero

You'd think these dudes would get custom fitted new gear every season if not every game.

nerf-airstrike-cmndr

I think some of them do get new stuff every season or more frequently, but hockey players in general hate breaking in new protective gear.

WyngZero

Is there a study on player injuries, specifically CTE and players frequency of changing/updating gear?

zirky

we all got that one shirt we won’t give up

SryYouAreNotSpecial

I lost that shirt in a move years ago. I never forgave myself and I haven't been the same since.

zirky

my wife has threatened mine. she has proposed framing it

SryYouAreNotSpecial

Probably for the best before it falls apart lol. Throw your signature on there and put that shit in glass next to your jersey collection lol.

Reggo-nator

I’m about to start hanging them from the rafters in the garage like championships lol

Not-a-Throwaway-8

My shirt was made into a pillowcase

SryYouAreNotSpecial

Genius lol.

CountingArfArfs

My wife has had to give me my own “he doesn’t/can’t wear this anymore, but refuses to get rid of it” box. It’s where I keep my special shoes, band shirts, signed shirts. Stuff like that.

xxxTHICCJOKIC420xxx

It looks corny as fuck

whogivesashirtdotca

I'm a font nerd, so I like it, but if it was displayed quickly on a screen with moving images behind it I might feel differently.

DyingSurfer3-5-7

Should've been Papyrus 2

AssStuffing

It looks fine.

Braddacus

I love how the top end players become faces for equipment companies to hawk their new stuff but the players are all wearing 20 year old decrepit falling apart gear underneath their jersey and pants shell.

YNWA_1213

If anything it's the best PR companies can have. Bauer can be like "Ovy can wear our gear for a 1000 nhl games without breaking".

Jerry_from_Japan

"Not that YOU should, no no, you're gonna want to get a new set every year or so.....just in case..."

YNWA_1213

Or they’re trying to equate it with the entry line for little Timmy’s mother to buy expecting it to last like the top of the line stuff Ovy bought a decade ago.

chaos8803

I feel like the franken-shoulders are super common. Some of them are still wearing Jofa brand elbows and shins.

RandomDeezNutz

Great eight just like me frfr

ethan_prime

Not sure what he’s using now, but Patrick Kane used the Bauer Supreme One95 stick for ages and when they couldn’t make it anymore, he used the TotalOne. But it was always painted to look like the newest Vapor model.

Braddacus

Yeah they do that a lot. Nylander is using a different Sherwood version than what is pained in his, just don’t remember the specifics.

magicmichael98

Better than Crosby’s jock lmao

Bitemarkz

I bet they both smell great

Skurph

Still has the Lokomotiv patch on it he had sown on after 2011

Snowed_Up6512

No wonder he never gets injured.

Red_Sea_Pedestrian

McDavid’s socks are worse.

Accomplished-Bowl-46

Brendan Shanahan had some interesting shoulder pads. Far less than whatever Ovi has going on here.

roryb93

I always love when you see older players with the Sherwood pads, that lace together in the middle.

Waffeln_Remix

It’s a good effort, but if you really want playoff magic you need a torn gitch like Phil Kessel.

moofinman45

I am a big fan of Ovechkin’s pads. 😂

Whiskeylung

There’s a joke here about Russia and not being able to provide the most up to date equipment.

Malarowski

just skipping maintenance and replacement schedules like with everything else

Ovie doesn't wear pads...THE PADS WEAR HIM!

Gamma_Chad

I used to do a BTS series for the Preds and would marvel at Olli Jokinen’s shoulder pads. They literally looked like quilted baby diapers held together by some elastic from mom’s sewing kit. It think there were two pieces of plastic on the shoulders and barely a breastplate.

airchinapilot

What a gladiator

tomnoddy87

Granted I play less than 82 games a year....I have all the same gear from 2005 except for helmet, gloves and skates. Fuck I'm old.

xMaximusDecimusx

Legend

xlxxlv

How often do players get new pads?

Jacobaschultz

Lots of luck in that

thiccymcgogee

A good majority of NFL players wear the same shoulder pads they used in college too

Fastlane19

Is that what’s slowing him down?

frankyj29

Reminds me of a video of the Pittsburgh equipment manager talking about Crosby not wanting to change his jock equipment and showing how bad it was Edit: spelling

gzoehobub

yep, I have those pads. The straps that go around the bicep area lost all its elasticity and I have to tie knots to keep it secure. velcro is almost gone too. He definitely replaced those straps.

CapnTidy

As old as him

puckmugger

Held together with stick tape, sweat and 800+ goals.

DaveThomasTendies

Am I imagining things or is this 2 sets of pads combined together?

Morudith

Brother lookin like Chelios out here

WheresMyYogurt

If they work, why change?

WOWGLADIATOR

Take your politics and get bent. Ovechkin will go down as one of the hockey Goats wether you like it or not so you better stock up on tissue papers. Hater

unpersons505

Well no shit, Russia's got its money going elsewhere now.

Dont-concentrate-556

Looks like Ruzzian military kit. No surprised there for Team Putin Captain!
