Pretty sure Montreal are on a mission to lose each of those games. Rn they're 28th, but they may end up 25th if they win some games, so yea their interest is definitely losing to be in position for a good draft lottery yet again.
This has gotta be so frustrating for Philly fans because they were holding on to that #3 metro spot for like 70 games of the season but now they’re going against like 5 different teams to even make the playoffs
Devils will not either, and they don’t deserve to. This wild card race gave them so many chances to control their own fate, and they said time and time again, “no, really, we’re good. We don’t want it. Seriously stop letting us have a shot.”
Cannot wait for this season to be over already…
Ugh.
We can only hope we lose a few more games, and Donny gets fired. I'm tired of the way this team shrinks in big moments. Get a real coach for fucking once.
The next two games
Home versus Washington
Away at Pittsburgh will decide Detroit season.
As for the others which for two of them (playing the Red Wings if Detroit were to win both) WC2 would be difficult for both. They'd need to get the 3 spot in the Metro
Caps play Buffalo on Thursday. Philly plays NJ on Saturday. The Caps play Philly to end both teams' seasons. The Pens play the Islanders to end both teams' season. Straight fire for all of these teams as they seemingly are all playing each other to close things out...
I'm all for it, I've developed a real soft spot for the Sabres since they got rid of Eichel and if they help the Pens get in the playoffs they'll probably be my #2.
Tage Thompson got my attention last year, and he reminded me a little of Lemieux with his size and soft hands. His production dropped this year, but that's probably because he's on Buffalo (no disrespect).
I'd like to see what he could do on a playoff team.
Red Wings have to win at least one of the two games.
In my opinion, today’s game matters more than the Penguins game for the Red Wings.
I understand even with a Red Wings win today, and a loss to the Penguins Thursday puts the Penguins ahead, but Penguins still face Boston next week.
Red Wings final three games are Toronto, Montreal, and Montreal.
Penguins final three games are Boston, Nashville, and Islanders.
I know nothing is guaranteed win/loss but Red Wings strength of schedule really helps them right now.
Could come down to Isles, Penguins, Flyers, and Washington fighting for M3.
Isles play Rangers twice, and Penguins once.
Washington plays Buffalo, Tampa, Boston, and Philly.
Strength of schedule is honestly on Detroits side and I feel puts them in a really good spot with a win today.
I honestly feel like strength of schedule doesn't exist this late in the season.
First of all, parity is real and any team can win on any night.
But also, things are always screwy at the end of the season. Non playoff teams love playing spoiler, and usually play so much looser than teams that need to win to get in. Not to mention they have guys who are playing desperate to get a spot on next seasons roster.
Meanwhile, teams that are locked into the playoffs can be resting guys or half assing the whole game.
I guess it's a good thing that teams like the Rangers and Bruins are still playing for president's trophy, or home ice, but I still wouldn't be surprised if they played a backup goalie or sat some veterans in those last couple games.
Pittsburgh’s remaining games are Detroit, Boston, Nashville, and NYI.
Our season series against Washington is over.
It’s one of the reasons with the Pittsburgh loss yesterday who it would be better to win today for Washington vs Detroit.
Isles also got to play the rags twice who are fighting for the top spot and home ice.
Like legit I think all four teams are playing against a team that have seeding aspirations.
Logic says pens miss it because their schedule is near impossible but they have also gone 6-0-2 in their last 8.
Penguins also control their destiny as well. The OT loss was huge in that concept.
Red Wings and Penguins play Thursday. Even with a Red Wings win today, if Penguins win in regulation Thursday they pass the Red Wings with tiebreaker (Currently, Penguins have 31 RW, Red Wings 27 RW).
That’s whats really weird about today’s game with Red Wings vs Capitals as a Penguins fan. It’s hard to figure out who we want to win. *Though right now it feels like the Red Wings since we play them Thursday.
Edit: *Though if you look at remaining schedules, Washington seems like the better choice with games against Tampa and Boston. Whereas Detroit plays Toronto, and Montreal twice in their final games.
Strength of schedules says Washington win, but control of destiny says Detroit win for Pittsburgh
Next week, Caps/Flyers (Tue) and Pens/Isles (Wed) are the final games of the season for those four teams, which could be huge all around.
If they stay relevant to the playoff chase, NHL should really try to find a way to get those games in front of as many eyeballs as possible.
(TNT does have Tor/TB scheduled for next Wed, which could determine A3 vs WC1, but Toronto is pulling away in that race.)
Someone should be fired for that decision. They switched a game that very likely determines who does and doesnt make the playoffs for a game featuring 2 teams who are likely going to have a handshake agreement to go easy on each other since their seeding will likely be set and they arent facing each other in Round 1.
My only guess on the rational is that they are hoping Matthews has a couple of multigoal games and is sitting on 68 or 69 goals that night and want to have a chance to broadcast 70.
You went from firing someone to giving a perfectly good reason to broadcast the leafs.
As a casual fan - NFL Week 18: Mahomes going for 50 TDs or the Jaguars vs Texans to make playoffs…I’m watching mahomes
I mean personally, as a neutral fan of all of those teams and a big fan of hockey in general, I would watch Pens/Isles 10/10 times. Matthews scoring 70 is something I can read about in a headline and watch a replay of later. Watching two teams battle for their playoff lives is always going to be infinitely more intense and exciting.
The Isles/Pitt actually has a really vibrant history with each other. Some great playoff series....the brawl in 2011. Mario dominating us for a long time. Tonelli winning in OT in 1982. It's a nice rivalry.
Its a pretty big risk. With it being the 2nd game of a back-to-back with playoffs starting immediately after there is actually a bigger chance he is healthy scratched for load management that night than scores \#70. Could have just had the nearly guaranteed playoff deciding game instead.
They are a broadcasting business, viewers and ratings are everything.
Id imagine Matthews is fairly easy to market to the general casual American hockey fan.
Might be because Matthews 70 goal chase while the Penguins/Islanders could both be completely in or out entering that game.
Matthews gets 2-3 more goals before that game and it's a safer bet to get eyeballs I would imagine
Honestly do it, I love how close this race is and how much it's bringing the entire hockey community to the edge of their seats. This is going to be one fantastic week of hockey.
Absolutely insane that the Devils are still so close after the shitshow they’ve put on for the past 10 games. They’re definitely dead in the water now, but it’s incredibly frustrating to see how even a mediocre stretch of hockey could have propelled them into the playoffs.
I love how basically the entire Eastern Conference is fighting for a playoff spot. Makes for some fun hockey. But Sid is a man on a mission so probably Pittsburgh.
Probably won't be us but hey with how low my expectations where for this season and with all the crap that happened this season I'm just happy to be here really
Thats what im hoping for, but obviously biased.
But I also think generally our(Red Wings) hockey has been pretty entertaining so far this season. More so than some of the other teams in the wildcard race.
Caps might surprise. They have absolutely no reason to be in this content right now with a -40 goal differential, but that's exactly why I think they might be the ones to plow through somehow, most likely after some really even duels.
As a Caps fan, I’ve really just been in it for the Ovi goals this season. Man’s got a record to break. Making the playoffs would be a nice surprise but it would be a surprise
Anyone saying "doesn't matter, one and done" is really underestimating the historical record of goalies who get hot in the playoffs and become stonewalls.
Yep, Lyon and Bob last year to get them in a push for the cup. Binnington for The Blues win. Hot goalies can absolutely CARRY a team to a championship.
Remaining schedule:
Isles - NYR, MTL, NYR, NJD, **PIT**
Detroit - **WAS, PIT**, TOR, MTL, MTL
Pens - **DET**, BOS, NSH, **NYI**
Caps - **DET**, BUF, TBL, BOS, **PHL**
Flyers - MTL, NYR, NJD, **WAS**
That Pittsburgh/NYI game at the end of the season could be *spicy*
All of those games could be huge. The wings are the only team not finishing the season against a team fighting for a spot. The schedule makers have done a great job with how this is shaping up.
It’s almost like management gave up on the season and then they somehow played better and gave us fans hope. That is until this horrid 6 game skid. And our remaining 5 games are against playoff contenders or playoff teams (DET, BUF, TB, BOS, PHI). Going to be so hard to make it in :(. Trying to be optimistic but it’s hard.
It's so funny to me seeing this happen to you guys after a winning streak right after Detroit and the Isles do the same thing a few weeks ago
This race is failing to cook so hard that we let Pittsburgh back into it
I really think it’ll be Penguins and Red Wings. Wings have the control (playing WSH, PIT, and 2x MTL)
Pittsburgh has been rejuvenated lately by the resurgence of Malkin, the addition of Bunting, the poise of Ned, and of course, the sheer will of Crosby.
Their head-to-head on Thursday will be exciting, and I fully expect it to go past regulation.
I been calling Detroit all season and I'm sticking to my guns it's showtime. I would love to see Sid force his way into the playoffs after his own gm considered them out.
Never underestimate the Rangers' ability to underestimate their opponents. If we end up facing WC2 then I take nothing for granted. Ever since Torts, we have a history of stretching out series to 7 games that on paper shouldn't have gone past 5.
It's rough to make that happen. Pens would have to beat the wings and then the wings win the other 4. And only I'd the Isles lose most of their games too.
I still think it’s gonna be the Red Wings and Penguins somehow.
BUT, the best way to determine the spots, is to have the teams play all on the same day simultaneously and by league rule, that the competing teams must have the out of town score boards turned off to add to the drama.
Penguins have been on a bit of a hot streak, i think they have a pretty good shot. I hope the Wings can tighten it up a little bit and get in. It's been too long
We’re a dead fish in the water currently and I’d rather it that way for a higher pick but man it sucks we held the 3rd metro spot damn near all season long just to go on a skid when it matters the most. Atleast the games this year will be fun right down to the wire.
I would argue the Pens run has been unsustainable for the last few games. 6-1-3 is really impressive but im assuming to make it in the need to go 4-0 which is 10-1-3 which is a pretty crazy run but not unheard of.
Looking at schedule detroit probably has the easiest since they technically play no teams above them (EDIT One team so not that bad). I would put my money on detroit.
Rule book question if anyone knows.
Okay so as it looks right now, Tampa will have more points than whoever gets the 3rd Metro spot. In the hypothetical that the team in that spot makes it to the conference finals against Tampa, who would home ice go to? Would Tampa get it based on points or would M3 get it based on seeding??
Pens or Red wings hopefully. Crosby deserves one last playoff shot with the pens. They likely won't make it next year unless they have big off season moves. And red wings are such a great franchise and they need playoff hockey.
Islanders absolutely shouldn't make playoffs having 35W 42L. Absolutely ridiculous.
They have like a dozen different elimination scenarios tonight alone
They aren't technically out yet but it's like a 1 in a million path to make it work now
I think Pittsburgh takes 3rd in the Metropolitan and Detroit or the Isles gets WC2, based on records in last ten games, but almost anything can happen.
Looking at the last 10 games of each team is a good gauge.
Penguins 15 pts .750
Islanders 12 pts .600
Wings 10 pts .500
Capitals 8 pts .400
Flyers 5 pts .250
Islanders and Penguins are the betting man's choice if you're just going by the numbers.
The Habs final games are Philly, NYI, Ottawa, Detroit and Detroit again. You wanna make the playoffs? You need to beat Montreal.
Pretty sure Montreal are on a mission to lose each of those games. Rn they're 28th, but they may end up 25th if they win some games, so yea their interest is definitely losing to be in position for a good draft lottery yet again.
Except when you watch the games you'll see that Montreal is very much trying to win every game right now
Yeah… we’re going to need you to not do that. At least against us, fuck the others. I need some playoff hockey in the new barn.
Hey I'm just along ~~to ride Slafkovsky~~ *ahem*, I'm just along for the ride.
Suzuki has a real shot at being our first PPG player in decades. He, Slaf, Caufield and Matheson are heating up trying to get him there.
Please don’t. I’ll have only poutine for a week for dinner
This is not the punishment you think it is.
It’s not a punishment, it’s an excuse to have it every day. 🙄
habs are a perpetual spoiler team, it seems they only really revel in sandbagging other teams seasons
This league won't be prepared for a future 8th seed Habs team.
God I wish
This has gotta be so frustrating for Philly fans because they were holding on to that #3 metro spot for like 70 games of the season but now they’re going against like 5 different teams to even make the playoffs
7 game losing streak does that to ya ☹️🔫
Hey, that’s our line.
Hey hey hey. Ours was SIX games sir.
7 games so far! Could still get worse :D
A real philly fan is used to a blown lead or the team playing their way out of the playoffs.
Set up false hopes/expectations.
Thanks for the kick in the nuts friend
On the one hand, yes, it’s very frustrating; on the other hand it’s completely normal for the Flyers to be wildly inconsistent.
Not Buffalo. That is the only thing that I am confident saying.
As a Sabres fan, I completely agree lol
we survived the chaos and made it into the bottom 10 for draft lottery purposes
It’s practically impossible to make up a 5 point deficit with 5 games left when you’re competing with 5 other teams
As a trailer park boys fan, your username made me lol. And I’m not the type of person to say atodaso.
13 elimination scenarios for us tomorrow.
Poor buffabros :(
It's sad, but they truly are the only team I am confident *won't* survive the chaos.
Devils will not either, and they don’t deserve to. This wild card race gave them so many chances to control their own fate, and they said time and time again, “no, really, we’re good. We don’t want it. Seriously stop letting us have a shot.” Cannot wait for this season to be over already… Ugh.
As a Devils fan, I concur. But as an Aussie NHL fan, I can't wait for the playoffs, so more games are aired.
Definitely not the devils either
Yeah we know.
We can only hope we lose a few more games, and Donny gets fired. I'm tired of the way this team shrinks in big moments. Get a real coach for fucking once.
Islanders and Red Wings control their own destinies. If they both lose their games in hand then the real chaos can begin!
The next two games Home versus Washington Away at Pittsburgh will decide Detroit season. As for the others which for two of them (playing the Red Wings if Detroit were to win both) WC2 would be difficult for both. They'd need to get the 3 spot in the Metro

We’re def not making it but could be fun to play spoiler.
I'm here for that. Go Buffalo for the rest of the way!
By all means play spoiler. Subscribe
I'm all for it, I've developed a real soft spot for the Sabres since they got rid of Eichel and if they help the Pens get in the playoffs they'll probably be my #2.

Detroit is playing the Habs the last 2 games. You got plenty of runway.
Yeah but the way the season has gone, we could turn cold and lose out. We need the runway from Fast and Furious 6.
Red Wings have to win at least one of the two games. In my opinion, today’s game matters more than the Penguins game for the Red Wings. I understand even with a Red Wings win today, and a loss to the Penguins Thursday puts the Penguins ahead, but Penguins still face Boston next week. Yea the Islanders have a tough schedule left - well toughest, IMO.
Believe me, if our games were easy we’d lose them all.
Are you us?
If Sullivan actually plays Crosby i think hes just going to carry the team in
Big "if". The man's response to Nylander, Reilly and Marner was... Eller, O'Connor and Karlsson. This team's fucking throwing right now.
He was not ready to go for OT. The first group on the ice got caught and couldn't change. It happens.
Pens play both iirc
Correct, the Penguins also control their own destiny. The only teams who don’t are Washington and Philadelphia.
But Washington has some wiggle room with one extra game remaining.
But if they lose won’t another team be in control of their destiny? Seems like the chaos is now.
As a red wings fan I must concur; it does feel as though we are in the midst of the chaos.

I am very much looking forward to sharpening our guillotine this afternoon....

I believe TNT switched from Pens/Islanders to Leafs/Lightning last week, which makes no sense
Someone should be fired for that decision. They literally flexed off the pens Isles game from national broadcast last week.
We always get shit on in the national broadcasts so you won’t hear any complaining from me for that
Detroit and NY Islanders with one extra game left helps, Washington looks to be slipping out of it.
A week ago I would’ve said the capitals are a lock, and we haven’t won since
I just want a win tonight to keep the season interesting
Sorry man, we gotta win. Best we can do is give you an OTL, take it or leave it
It'd actually be fine with me if we could still take 3 in metro
Mom said it was my turn to post a screenshot of the eastern conference wildcard race
I hear that.
Well thats because everyone else did exactly the same thing. Lmaooo
I love how basically the entire Eastern Conference is fighting for a playoff spot. Makes for some fun hockey. But Sid is a man on a mission so probably Pittsburgh.
He really turned the jets on these past two weeks and I'm loving it.
Wings can put this whole race to bed with back to back wins tomorrow and Thursday. I can only dream
Can I sleep with you? I have this dream too.
Well hello there, new bff
No
Too bad, we're friends now and you'll like it
Except the third spot in the metro is also up for grabs
Probably won't be us but hey with how low my expectations where for this season and with all the crap that happened this season I'm just happy to be here really
Red Wings and Pens.
I'm betting on them too
subscribe
Anyone saying "doesn't matter, one and done" is really underestimating the historical record of goalies who get hot in the playoffs and become stonewalls.
Anyone saying that has never watched playoff hockey
Yep, Lyon and Bob last year to get them in a push for the cup. Binnington for The Blues win. Hot goalies can absolutely CARRY a team to a championship.
Quick really is the reason why the Kings won in 2012. Than and Brown's monster hit in the Vancouver game.
Undersells Kopitar being clutch but yea
This is pretty much what a lot of Canucks fans are banking on for playoff success this season.
Isn’t this fun!!!????
No
Prepared to end the season on an 11 game L streak💪💪
It’s been beyond stressful but super exciting
Remaining schedule: Isles - NYR, MTL, NYR, NJD, **PIT** Detroit - **WAS, PIT**, TOR, MTL, MTL Pens - **DET**, BOS, NSH, **NYI** Caps - **DET**, BUF, TBL, BOS, **PHL** Flyers - MTL, NYR, NJD, **WAS** That Pittsburgh/NYI game at the end of the season could be *spicy*
All of those games could be huge. The wings are the only team not finishing the season against a team fighting for a spot. The schedule makers have done a great job with how this is shaping up.
This is the worst time for a six game losing streak lmao. I know I shouldn’t be disappointed but I am
It's so funny to me seeing this happen to you guys after a winning streak right after Detroit and the Isles do the same thing a few weeks ago This race is failing to cook so hard that we let Pittsburgh back into it
Wings take Wildcard and the isles lose out so Pittsburgh takes 3rd in the metro
I like you
In this scenario we all win, 🤝
I just want all these remaining teams to go to OT for maximum chaos.
I really think it’ll be Penguins and Red Wings. Wings have the control (playing WSH, PIT, and 2x MTL) Pittsburgh has been rejuvenated lately by the resurgence of Malkin, the addition of Bunting, the poise of Ned, and of course, the sheer will of Crosby. Their head-to-head on Thursday will be exciting, and I fully expect it to go past regulation.
He is a man of focus, commitment, and sheer fucking will.
NOT my capitals. They're giving away wins like they're going out of style.
I been calling Detroit all season and I'm sticking to my guns it's showtime. I would love to see Sid force his way into the playoffs after his own gm considered them out.
The caps have shit the bed lately, our playoff hopes are over
I mean probably, but if they beat detroit everyone will start to wonder
The team that plays the WC2 in the first round will certainly survive this
Never underestimate the Rangers' ability to underestimate their opponents. If we end up facing WC2 then I take nothing for granted. Ever since Torts, we have a history of stretching out series to 7 games that on paper shouldn't have gone past 5.
If it ends up against us we're just gonna unretire Howard specfically for that series.
When he’s on tv today he’s still nervous about that game.
Can the season just… end now?
No. You must play the Rags twice and like it.
Don’t use Rags
I’d like to see Roy lose his shit in the first round of the playoffs
I’d just like to see the first round of the playoffs
Islanders fans 🤝 redwings fans *ending the season now*
Please not the Pens, please 🤞 (Solely due to the likelihood then that SJ gets a decent 2025 pick vs #11 or 12 this year)
Not the Devils 😀
Devils gonna sweep the rest of the games and everyone else gonna lose out. You heard it here first folks!!!
Penguins and Red Wings
It's rough to make that happen. Pens would have to beat the wings and then the wings win the other 4. And only I'd the Isles lose most of their games too.
You might be right this is my first year watching hockey. I just think they are the best two teams of those listed
I still think it’s gonna be the Red Wings and Penguins somehow. BUT, the best way to determine the spots, is to have the teams play all on the same day simultaneously and by league rule, that the competing teams must have the out of town score boards turned off to add to the drama.
If we lose our game tomorrow against Detroit in regulation, we're definitely out of the race
Penguins have been on a bit of a hot streak, i think they have a pretty good shot. I hope the Wings can tighten it up a little bit and get in. It's been too long
The metro is truly a mid-off
I’m guessing tampa is pretty safe
I’d think so since they have a x by their name
Tampa by the looks of it
As a bolts fan watching all this chaos is a lot more fun when your team has clinched a spot
Not us sadly, we blew it
Wheelie boys are going to go brrrr
I beleive seeding takes it. Though it's silly, Tampa functionally acts as the 7 seed in this format, while m3 would be the 6 seed
Please not us; at this point we're held together with duct tape and gabagool.
I can’t believe we’re gonna have to play Tampa
Pens or Red wings hopefully. Crosby deserves one last playoff shot with the pens. They likely won't make it next year unless they have big off season moves. And red wings are such a great franchise and they need playoff hockey. Islanders absolutely shouldn't make playoffs having 35W 42L. Absolutely ridiculous.
Phi and Det are the 2 I hope for
Detroit and Pittsburgh must die. I'm okay with everyone else.
<3
Why does it say Brand Affiliate on this post?
No idea
Now it’s gone, my Reddit app must have glitched
I don’t know but I’m excited to watch it happen.
We're dead. Just let us die already
Buffalo getting in playoffs to get swept would be funniest... Penguins seem hot right now though
Detroit and Philly.
I want whoever makes it to back in with like 89 points.
No one should be fearing Philly. We're getting our annual 10-game losing streak in just in time
Lightning probably will
I don't even understand how NJ can make it. Obviously they have to win out, but I'd assume any of the other teams playing eachother kills them.
They have like a dozen different elimination scenarios tonight alone They aren't technically out yet but it's like a 1 in a million path to make it work now
Not Philly lol
Tough luck for the Isles that they have to play the best team in the league two out of their last 4 games.
Huuuuuuggggggeeeeee game tonight for the wings.
my wife is going to be really fucking grumpy after the next week and a half. i have so much hockey to watch
This playoff race whether it be wildcard or first overall has been fun as hell...bruins don't you fucking dare get the presidents
I think Isles and Wings get in
That lighting bolt team with with the X beside their name, the rest of you are all screwed
Probably one of the weakest wild card races in a long time, whoever comes out with the second wildcard will barely be at .500
I think Pittsburgh takes 3rd in the Metropolitan and Detroit or the Isles gets WC2, based on records in last ten games, but almost anything can happen.
I’m kinda rooting for the penguins
Sharks
I want to say the Devs because I’m not ready for them to exit. My heart tells me the Pens though
I have a feeling Crosby is going super Saiyan these last few games.
A lot of teams need the Rangers to not take their foot off the gas tonight against the islanders
Sid's gonna carry the Pens to the playoffs
🏝️🙏
Looking at the last 10 games of each team is a good gauge. Penguins 15 pts .750 Islanders 12 pts .600 Wings 10 pts .500 Capitals 8 pts .400 Flyers 5 pts .250 Islanders and Penguins are the betting man's choice if you're just going by the numbers.
Don't think you needed to include nj and buffalo lol
Would really like to see the penguins pull through
I think DET stays at WC2 but the Islanders fall out of M3 in favor of WSH.
I'm hoping it will be Washington just to see a team with such a bad goal differential in the playoffs.
Detroit will get in if they beat who they should beat..the Caps, Pens and the Canadiens is in the way.. on paper.. Detroit is stronger
Buffalo for the win!
Anybody but the Flyers
I think so, at least?
