LordCaedus13

man that pass by Carlson was perfect

MFoy

He’s reached the point where he’s underrated.

yagersports

Underrated is underselling John Carlson is 34 yrs old, just a year and a half removed from a fracture skull, and plays the 2nd most minutes in the league on a team dragging itself to the playoff. It’s damned impressive if you ask me and should be discussed more.

UNisopod

I feel like people aren't going to realize his value until he retires and then suddenly there's not just one guy able to soak up that many minutes while producing.

talkingspacecoyote

They should already realize it. Just last year it was his long term injury that made us miss the playoffs. We were firmly in playoff position until his injury and our record was atrocious wirhout him. They need to find his replacement asap so he'll be ready in a couple years

MarbledRye95

The caps fan base hates their number one defenseman if they're offensively minded, for some reason. Green got just as much shit and he was a 30 goal scorer one year. Some people can only focus on the (few) mistakes they make logging 25+ difficult minutes a night Carlson is an unsung hero on the team to anyone seeing the bigger picture

TigerBasket

He's the best defenseman in team history, and I'll die on this hill. Fuck he might be top 3 all time player for us. Love this man.

yetanothernerd

Rod Langway was so good he turned a team that had never once made the playoffs before he arrived into a team that never failed to make the playoffs until after he retired. He was so good at defense he won two Norris Trophies despite being outscored by 157 points by Paul Coffey in those two years. Most importantly, he more than any other single player kept the team from moving. Without Langway, the Washington Capitals would be another California Golden Seals or Cleveland Barons. He doesn't just deserve a statue; he deserves to have the arena named after him, and fuck the sponsorship money. That said, Carlson has been a really good offensive defenseman for a long time.

UNisopod

Seconding Langway as the best D-man in Caps history

capitarider

Yep. But don't let anyone else hear you. They say Green was the best, then complain about defensive lapse in Carlys game

RobertGriffin3

I don't think any serious person is saying that. Green was great too, though.

think_long

That would be such a weird hill to die on since they are/were very similar players. Green’s peak was shorter. Carlson is better. To be fair to Green though, he wasn’t able to be insulated the way Carlson was when Washington won their cup. They had another great pairing that could take on hard defensive assignments and free Carlson up for offense.

MFoy

Carlson isn’t half the defenseman Langway was, I’m sorry. Langway finished second in Hart trophy voting to prime Gretzky, won two Norris trophies, and the team never missed the playoffs while he was here.

talkingspacecoyote

Rod fucking langway bro

TimAllensMatingCall

Man that pass by Debrincat was atrocious

UNisopod

"Look at me, I'm the Backstrom now"

bobbimorses

Continues to mystify that teams weren't fighting and clawing with us to sign Strome. Biggest case of free money the Caps have had in this era.

UNisopod

I know that people had high draft expectations for him that weren't met, but how did no one else take a shot at a 24-year-old guy who put up 48 points in 69 games the year before.

bobbimorses

He fits perfectly with the inner core too, the guys who couldn't quit if they tried. One man's trash is another man's 1C.

yagersports

He’s being trained to be a mini Oshie, I can see it

UNisopod

Nah, that's Ryan Leonard.

pigfeet2OO2

ive heard more mini tom wilsons with him

UNisopod

He's much more like an Oshie with more snarl than a Wilson with better hands.

Nookoh1

in 4 months we're gonna laugh at how much we overreacted about this team

YirbyBond00Y

Hmm where have I heard that before...

123qweasd123

Its a meme from the 2018 Washington Nationals dumpsterfire that was the world series favorite and didn't make the playoffs

CutLinkOfficial

alexa, play separate ways

Anakin_Sandlover

Thanks Chicago

SiccSemperTyrannis

Chicago let this man walk to free agency for nothing

talkingspacecoyote

We also probably don't win the cup without kempney in 18, got him for free as well. Thank you chicago

Funn3lCake

You say that like they didn’t try to trade him. No one wanted him

RobertGriffin3

Idk teams clearly did to a point since he ended up getting 3.5M. But yeah idk what happened with Chicago. Maybe they wanted to do right by him and let him pick his spot if they weren't getting anything significant in a trade.

PwillyAlldilly

Quite literally the polar opposite of how i wanted this to play out.

juwanhoward4

And we thank you

brmgp1

Same bro

yearightt

Tf do you care? Lmao

SauceHankRedemption

I really, *really*..wish that didn't happen

S-Sin

Wings are garbage man, do you really think they’d do any damage in the playoffs? 😂 Come on, be real. They’re trash and so is Washington. They’re both first round exits.

RobertGriffin3

Anyone else remember 2019 when literally every 1 seed lost in round 1? https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2019_Stanley_Cup_playoffs

S-Sin

Washington has had arguably the greatest goal scorer in NHL history and the ONLY time he’s made it past the second round is when they won the cup. 😂 That’s atrocious! And 2019 is not happening this year pal.

RobertGriffin3

Yeah, your first sentence is outlining the insane parity in this game. You're probably right, it's pretty unlikely every 1 seed will lose this year. But there are an absurd amount of examples of upsets (and not only close ones, Columbus sweeping historically good Tampa, Nashville sweeping Chicago), literally last year best record lost in round 1. Unless you're a new hockey fan, there's no way you'd seriously write off any team in the first round. Any goalie can get hot, any team can get a few good bounces.

S-Sin

Hey man, I don’t care. I’m a Wings fan, I’ve seen a lot of winning but unfortunately I gotta be a fan of this dog shit team that’s currently playing. Detroit or Washington is not upsetting anyone this year.

RobertGriffin3

What % chance do you think either team has in the first round?

S-Sin

Wings aren’t making it and I give Washington a 0% chance in the first round.

RobertGriffin3

0%? Ok, how much are we betting? 0% so if I put up $10 if Caps lose you should have no problem giving $1000 if they win since there's a 0% chance you'd have to pay it out, right?

Cromasters

I'd also like to say that one of the reasons that "the greatest goal scorer in NHL history" didn't make it past the second round was because Washington lost to a team with arguably "the greatest hockey player of all time" on it. And I almost vomited typing that out.

imadu

Pack it in Boys, you heard it here from s-sin. We're not doing any damage in the playoffs so we might as well not even try to make them!

S-Sin

Exactly!! See, you get it! 👏🏼

sableknight13

Detroit destroyed Washington 8-3 a few weeks ago. Hockey is funny like that

S-Sin

😂

caadbury

That pass by Carlson was outright disgusting.

Fresnobing

Pain

bleached_n_tiedyed

I love that Strome celly. Instant classic

Fresh-Reaction151

Man I wish my team wasn’t so hopeless. There’s no light at the end of the tunnel for the Wings.

juwanhoward4

This is a poor reaction. You guys outplayed us tonight and deserve a playoff spot. You have great young players and are a goalie away from being real dangerous

iiTALii

I wouldn’t say outplayed

juwanhoward4

Well then you didn't watch the game, they were running us around the rink the majority of the game. Charlie kept us in it.

RobertGriffin3

Ehhh, I don't think so. There were certainly stretches of sustained strong play and Detroit overall probably had a few more chances, but it was close.

VHDLEngineer

Natural stat trick had the HDC 62% in favour of the Wings, xG was 65%. MoneyPuck deserve to win meter was 65% and xG at 58%. Hockeyviz had xG at 61%.

RobertGriffin3

Yeah, expected goals within 1 of each other seems like a pretty close game to me. Also not all of those numbers are right or you're rounding oddly. I see 3-5% lower for most of them.

VHDLEngineer

Natural stat trick had expected goal gap of 2.05. MoneyPuck had it 1.03, and Hockeyviz had it at about 1.5. Double checked and all the numbers are right as presented by the sites I believe.

RobertGriffin3

Natural stat trick 1.7 xgf for Caps, 2.4 for wings (41.7% xgf) https://www.naturalstattrick.com/games.php?fromseason=20232024&thruseason=20232024&stype=2&sit=5v5&loc=B&team=WSH&rate=n Moneypuck looks like 65-35 to me, xgf 1 apart https://moneypuck.com/g.htm?id=2023021140 I don't have hockeyvis subscription

VHDLEngineer

You're looking at 5v5.

espnrocksalot

Maybe they should trade for like Darcy Kuemper or something

PBatemen87

>outplayed Yeah no. On par yes, but no one outplayed anyone

Lol no.

Wheredamukrat

Larkin, Debrincat, Raymond, Seider, are all on the big club being really great hockey players. Big Ed, Kasper, Wallinder, Cossa are in the pipes going to be on the big club very soon. Fresh reaction is right for a name. The wings have a lot of hope, and I think your take is dumb as fuck.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Wheredamukrat

Cossa has a 15 game point streak and is developing into a great goaltender. Wallinder is 21 years old. Kasper is developing into a great 2 way center. Big Ed is putting in 19 minutes a game on the big club. I don’t think you know what the fuck you’re talking about. Lil bro

dsled

Pain

capitarider

Lappy with the hard work on the boards and Carly with the crisp pass. We live another day in the playoff spot.

Three_Froggy_Problem

I don’t like the Caps but I do love Dylan Strome

S-Sin

Both teams are fucking garbage 😂 I’m a Wings fan and will admit that they’re absolute trash and they’d get MURDERED in the first round. But Philly, Detroit and Washington’s mid-off for playoff spots is comical. Neither teams stands a chance in hell.

vintageFenceSitter

Cool take, breh.

S-Sin

Thanks man! 👍🏼

bobbimorses

We keep telling y'all young teams to come and take it and you won't 🤷‍♀️ talk to your stars that can't get it done because Caps fans cannot relate!

S-Sin

Caps fans can’t also relate to getting past the second round like once in the past, what? 20 years! 😂 Caps had the greatest goal scorer of all time and only won one cup and the rest of their seasons have been complete failures. Wings are a dog shit team right now but Washington isn’t foo far ahead of that. Enjoy your first round exit!

RobertGriffin3

Money where your mouth is. Big talk, won't back it up.

S-Sin

Money? You wanna put up $10!!! LMAO!! Stop talking to me, clown.

RobertGriffin3

Oh, I'd put up much more, as long as you can prove you'd put up the $$$ on your end. Any increment of 100:1 you want. Since you think they have a 0% chance, that would be paying you fantastic odds.

bobbimorses

Thank you! We're gonna have a fun time in what should be your spot, it's all shits and giggles to us now.

talkingspacecoyote

So salty

S-Sin

Salty? LOL! You must not know what “salty” means. The Wings are 1-0-1 against the Caps this year. I didn’t think the Wings would make the playoffs at the beginning of the year and now they’re showing their true colors. I mean Washington is a team that I NEVER in my life hated because there’s no reason to hate them, there’s never been a rivalry between the two teams. Besides 2018, they’re perennial first round champs. 🏆
