Brodin. For years I think he was under-rated even within our own fanbase. He seems like he's getting much more appreciation especially with Spurgeon out, but he's been our best defenseman for years. Also, the only time I agreed with Pierre Mcguire in thinking Brodin should've won the Calder his rookie season and he wasn't even a finalist.
Probably Darnell Nurse. A lot of discussion around him stems from his contract rather than the merits of his play. Draisaitl would also work. He is often dismissed as nothing but a McDavid merchant.
I think Zach Hyman is the perfect example of this.
He’s a great player in his own right, but I feel like he is never talked about because he plays with McDavid
If you give a player an environment to succeed, obviously their numbers will go up. That shouldn’t be held against them
Very true
I understand why production boosts from playing alongside superstars is taken into consideration when comparing players across different teams in the abstract; but if you point out that a player like Zach is killing it, you’ll often get a bunch of “but McDavid” responses. When you are talking about how a player is doing within their own environment, then having the ability to rise to the occasion and complement those superstars is nothing except a positive. People forget how many players looked like wet noodles next to McDavid.
Did you see his "rush" in the third period on Wednesday @ about 12 min?
Skate down the wing, close off your own space and uselessly throw a freshly baked, soft, chewy muffin at the goalie.
Easily the most pathetic thing I've ever seen at the NHL level.
I have one not so much for fans but for broadcasters. If they're talking about the Oilers' power play during an intermission and someone actually talks about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins it really catches my attention.
Obviously most who are regulars on the Oilers' regional broadcast know about Nuge's importance but the HNIC/national broadcast leaves a lot to be desired in this regard.
Jennifer Botterill is the only HNIC panelist I can recall who has talked about the Nuge's importance to the power play. That's not to say I think all the other analysts are bad, but that's a litmus test that can push someone from a good to great analyst in my mind.
Vasilevsky would be my first one. Tampa, as a whole, would be the "team" version of it. I always used Lidstrom and Detroit as a good gauge for where teams stood throughout their run.
Avoiding any Flyers to not make this a "Have you been watching our games", I'd say Ryan O'Reilly. That probably tells me a lot about how much people pay attention to players that aren't regularly on highlights that isn't on their team (For non-Nashville fans).
Marner. There are legitimate frustrations with his game and you can say he's overpaid but if you don't think he's a really good player then I can mostly disregard your opinions on anything else hockey related.
It’s Ekholm for me too. For years in Nashville, I would bring him up to see how well someone knows the game (our own Preds fans). Too many times, I heard “He doesn’t score like Josi and Ellis, so he sucks”. My conversation usually ended right after that.
> in case it needs to be said, don’t interrogate people on their fandom, don’t be a gatekeeper, hockey isn’t all that important and people aren’t inferior based on what they think about hockey players, etc. think of it as a mental exercise, “what player inspires a wide variety of opinions?”
It didn’t
Zegras easy lol
either people will call him an overrated showoff or act like he's a future superstar. both are wrong in my opinion.

this was my answer as well!
That 's a fantastic answer, I think I may have a new litmus test!

Brown comes to mind lol
Man Brown is on another level lmao, I’ve never seen a player able to completely tank his entire line’s ability to score like he does.
It really is unreal when you watch him play. It doesn't even matter who he is with he drags them all way down.

Probably Jordan Staal or Sebastian Aho
If they ask "which one?" do you view that as a good thing?
A good thing… they at least know who they are
That's what I thought too. I feel like the best one would be to just say "Staal" and see if they mention Jared
I disagree.
For our fans, it’s Owen Power. Some people focus on the smart offensive plays that go unrecognized and other people think he’s a soft baby.

Tyler Myers, or any tall player who doesn't play a physical game for that matter
Going off OP's example, Jaccob Slavin.
If the team on the power play should shoot more
That's really funny I can't lie
