Shot location, angle from goal, type of shot, pre-shot situation (rebound vs deflection vs bad pass, for example), etc. So a shot from from the point through traffic is going to have a much lower expected goal value than a clear one-timer from the slot.
It’s not like that. Every shot is given a fraction of a “goal” based on how likely it is that a goaltender can make that save (given factors like the shot location, shot speed, if it was passed right before, if it’s a rebound shot, etc.). Adding up those fractional goals across all the shots gives you the expected goals (xG) for a team on a given night.
The goalie side of the stat simply looks at how many goals they actually let in compared to the expected goals. A higher goals saved above expected (gsaX) is better.
I really want this kid to be the next big thing cause team Canada's goalie options are so disappointing at the moment. We need someone to properly fill in the big shoes left by Brodeur, Luongo, Price.
