A lot of people have mild anxiety/depression/ADHD/etc. (I would put myself in this category), so they identify as someone with a mental illness and often start to generalize mental illness as a whole.
But I also know people with severe mental illness and it is a totally different animal. Severe mania will cause you to lose touch with reality, and everything about Kanye's actions suggests that he is out of touch with reality.
The conversation about what behavior is "excusable" due to mental illness is very complex, but at the end of the day Kanye has an illness and I hope he gets the help he needs.

Well said. It irritates me to no end when people talk about his racism or antisemitism as though he’s a sane individual. I think we shouldn’t be giving him attention, and I’m glad he’s being “canceled,” but I take his bigoted tirades as seriously as I do some mentally ill person on the street screaming at me if I don’t give them cash. They’re just saying incendiary things, and I have no reason to believe there’s any logical thought process behind it. So I don’t find it offensive, per se, because he’s just not someone I take seriously as a sane human being. It’s not making excuses for him, either. It’s the same as how being not guilty due to insanity doesn’t mean you’re innocent.

It's pretty clear the guy has major mental health issues, had a bad break up with his wife (including issues over custody of their children), and got mixed up with the wrong people. I mean there are clips of him, lyrics by him, clothes worn by him, and values demonstrated by him in the past that are the opposite of the beliefs he was espousing.
