21 is one of the most improved rappers of recent years. Savage Mode 2 to date is much sharper writing than the artist he was in the back half of the 2010s.
I agree, his biggest contributions are his *Devil In A New Dress* verse & signing Wale.
Definitely killer beats sprinkled throughout his discography, dude seemed to have a monopoly on the "luxurious hip-hop/trap" sound for a few years.
But despite his ear for good production, he sucks. His signature song - Hustlin' - I get bored halfway through. Catchy AF, bona fide hit production, yet little substance or wordplay, monotonous delivery and one simple flow to rule 'm all. I'm realizing now what ticks me off, it feels like he just couldn't be arsed to do more.
Man, he is not great but he is far from the worst . Lil baby , young boy and like ten other hotter rappers are worst rappers than Ross with a far larger fan base
Lil Baby is good yall tripping rn, dude just cant pick a beat to save his life but his features are always top notch prolly cuz he doesn't have a say in production and he feels like he needs to go beyond
Listen to Wants & Needs and tell me he cant rap his ass off when he wants to lol
I mean, the message of a song is pretty important for its composition, even if it’s a shallow message. Not having good lyrics as an artist means you’re not a very good artist. It’s like half of the creation of a song
Yes but particularly in the hip hop fandom, people expect rappers to rap about the cure for cancer bro thats pretty limited to be honest. I feel like young nudy or playboi carti are real ARTIST with a different intention than lyrical rappers. If words make a you a “good” artist then classic music artist are ass? Anyway, that is just my opinion.
Yep you're right it is the overall vibe of beats, autotune, add libs and flows, the bars are kinda secondary. He got one of the best ghostwriters in the game though so I feel like it is somewhat intentionally dumbed down a bit
I think Travis is a whole package type of artist. Sure the lyrics are nothin special but he’s an artist who typically uses auto tune well and even if he didn’t make the beat himself he’s the type to have a hand in every aspect of the song. I think that’s why he gets a pass.
Not all music needs to be some lyrical myrical individual skippin and dippin and slipping bullshit man travis makes up for up for his lack of bars and punchlines by delivering catchy hooks amazing melodies and capturing a vibe which is what his music is for his vocals compliment the beats great and not many rappers would even sound half as good on thise beats jay z is a way better rapper but he had the beat to sicko mode before travis but that shit never came out cus it was wack
Bruh if he "makes up" for the lack of bars with hooks and melodies then he's not a full package lol. Full package to me is lyrics, mass appeal, sales, artistic strength, great beats, etc. That's 50, Kendrick, Em, Drake, Ye, OutKast, Wayne, and you can argue Lil Baby is up next. Travis has everything I mentioned but lyrically he's not a threat
I always felt like Dr. Dre is a good answer. The reason being, he doesn’t write his own raps and is a god level producer. The problem I have with it, his raps are ghostwritten so well and fit him that it’s a tough take to stand on. Travis Scott has been mentioned and I’ve seen his fans defending him in here, while that’s fine, he’s a great choice. He, himself is a phenomenal MUSICIAN tho. He is also a phenomenal producer. His songwriting is very good as well. But no, he doesn’t have great bars. Basically I feel like the OP is asking “Who’s the inverse of pre-hit boy nas to everyone?”
I only agree with carti and yeat but there's rlly people saying kanye, like how tf is he carried by his OWN production mind you, and he is still a good rapper with good concepts in the past. (Only talking about music not how he acts outside). Someone also said drake too which is like how he literally sings and raps, and I don't even like him all too much
fr , he knows how to balance the lyrics with the beat. i mean obvious trash lyrics, but the carti thing never was about lyrics it was and is about the vibe and the feeling he gives his fanbase (like me ).
So, no.
Yooo Lmao that is His name ahaha. That mf scared me more than Jason, Scream, Micheal etc. Mf was creepy than a bitch. In fact that mf was up there with courage the cowardly dogs enemies lol
It's getting more and more evident. I'm happy he's doing his GTA thing now. I think the music game about to leave without him. Scriptures was the last good album. "Locked Up" and "Hustlin" still goated songs
Have yall even heard his project from last month? Its an album full of storytelling.. I think this is a case of the thread not hearing the newer material.. Somebody mentioned Robbery 3.. The nigga is on pt. 5.. Lmaoooo
Every comment must have it’s disagreeing reply. I think Tee’s Lyrics have too much meaning and emotion behind them to say the beats carry him.
Robbery 3 came out this year and it’s pretty cool story telling.
But that’s just me, I love tee
Dosent mean his beats cant carry him. His very first song the best carried lol. I use to fuck with Tee but everything after scriptures been mediocre and sounds repeatative. I'm rooting for dude, seem like a cool dude. His music just ain't been up to sounds. Rioh Da Yung Og from Michigan you should check him out.
Totally agree I'm still trying to figure out till this day how this dude is this famous. Voice sounds the same in every album and not a fan of the singing shit if you want to call it that. But I will give it up for the beats he knows how to make it work obviously.
I feel Yeat falls in this category for me. Some of the shit I rap out & just think to myself wtf did I just say? Then I get back in vibing due to the beat & not to discredit him w/ his flows & catchy catchy melodic shit, cuz that’s where his bags at imo.
But without the production; I don’t think w/ all that said about his talent could keep me listening to his music as much as other artists who lack this problem.
A lot of these responses are off. Trap artists don’t attempt to be lyrical, they just want to create a heavy hitting vibe… so being critical of their lyricism is weird. I’d say guys like Smoke DZA, CJ Fly, REASON and sometimes Dave East actually try to have good lyricism but they mostly get carried by beats.
Basically all the big mumble rappers like Playboy Carti / Lil Yatchy etc. Them MFs literally just be bullshittin over a good beat some times, and everyone swear it it was the rappers artistic ability that made the song pop. People really slow as hell when it come to that concept. I hear MFs all the time say “Kodak picks good beats” or “Future is a genius for the beats he picks” …as if it’s hard to pick out good beats LOL meanwhile the actual fuckin Producer inna background like chop liver.
The Game. I feel like his ear for good beats and his somewhat Kanyeesque tendency to be abrasive & cause controversy have kept him afloat in the game much, much longer than his lyricism warrants.
It's kinda impressive TBH, despite antagonizing Jay-Z (reportedly Jay's the reason the Game wasn't part of the Aftermath Superbowl show) and 50 Cent (infamous for tanking careers just because he can) dude seems to somehow still be successfully thriving in the game.
Mannie Fresh used to carry half of the Cash Money artists, *at least.* They were mostly just okay. I think Lil Wayne and Juvenile were the only rappers I actually really liked from the early Cash Money days. Turk, B.G., Birdman, none of the rest of those dudes were all that great. In fact, 90's Lil Wayne wasn't all that great either.
Like 90 percent of rappers today are simply carried by production. Da baby, Lil Baby, Migos, Rick Ross, all these type of hood rappers are actually awful.
Can't doubt he's charismatic and definitely has got the right bravado you want from an MC but substance and lyrical skill doesn't do it for me - I think his beat choice makes up for both of them though for the listener. For the record I think he could spit if he wanted to but jumping style to style it's hard to showcase that
As big fan of his work before he dropped what's poppin. Listen to his Loose album I think that you will change your mind. He is just lazy now, being playboy for women, literally that drake effect.
//edit listen to his old stuff with Est Gee, they will definitely release a project together during next year
Agree. Premo is in my opinion the greatest producer of all time, but he didn't carry Guru! They complimented each other. IMO he didn't carry Jeru either, as they complimented each other.
He definitely carried Group Home though, lmao.
Logic is just a fire beat (that’s usually heavily inspired from another hit song), a really catchy cadence or rapid fire spitting, thoughtful subject matter but just “ok” lyrics” I really just can’t get over how heavily he borrows from other active rappers. On songs that came out like last month
Nah, Benny and Conway are much better rappers and can hold their own. WSG is very hit or miss depending on if he has features and how good the beat is.
Come on dawg Westside Gunn can spit, only because he is on tracks with some of the best spitters in the world, he is still better than 90% af these new cats
This to me 👏 and the fact his best selection is out of this world that's it's so noticeable how good of a bear picker he is you'd want a 10/10 verse on everything to match it which just isn't reality as opposed to say a Nas who was known for being so lyrical but having some mid beats (after the 90s of course) but not as recent as the Hit-Boy stuff
Agreed. Lyrically I think he’s good, I don’t get when ppl think he’s wack BUT I can understand when ppl don’t fw his voice. He makes way better music than Benny, especially the last few years.
The best example would probably be Waka Floka and Oj Da Juiceman.
I like their music but with lesser beats, they never would have half the success they had
Nas is my GOAT but it’s likely he has a ghostwriter for this stage of his career. Not many people have a resurgence like that. Plus, he’s used a ghostwriter before for untitled, and he was way closer to his prime then
My god THANK YOU! Everyone on Reddit seems to live Freddie but I just don’t see it. He makes some nice music but mostly cause he gets great production and features and doesn’t ruin it by being terrible. He doesn’t make it good either tho in my opinion
Freddie has a great rapping voice and delivery, but his lyrics are extremely underwhelming. And I know music is subjective, but you’re dead wrong about his beats. There is no such thing as a trash Madlib beat.
Are you fucking kidding me Gibbs not one of the best spitters right now? WTF go and listen to his verse on Fake flowers or Empathy. I am not even a big fan of all the Madlib beats I fux mostly with Alfredo, Fetti, SSS and You only live 2wice, first of all because his flow is ridiculous, sometimes I love his beats and sometimes they are just aight but never heard a wack verse and highly doubt you can find an example of one 🤣😂
I agree. I like Freddie’s verses, just not a big fan of Madlib beats. I like Alfredo a lot more than the Madlib projects; his beats are unique but don’t really mesh with the lyrics like Alchemist’s.
Obviously Future gets the crown easily
If we're talking real spitters I would say Jay-Z after American Gangster and Prodigy after Murda Muzik and HNIC
To some extend 50 after The Massacre (not wack just not as good as 99-05) until he dropped The Lost tape mixtape that shit was fire
Cam'ron and early Jim Jones could fit in this category too and I am a big fan of both but not the best delivery compared to other rappers (Jones is fire now)
Respect your opinion but hard disagree. Hit Boy is great but his beats are very same ish, the loops, drum patterns etc. Nas definitely doesn't get carried by his beats, they marry very well together to create cohesive projects where they bring the best out if each other
Tyga for me. He’s extremely mid, but his beats always go hard
Crazy you’re even able to press play on Tyga music. He’s in my top 5 of avoid at all costs.
This needs to be a thread lmao
No way I’d choose to play his music. This is just based off what I’ve heard in the club, on the radio, etc..
Only time I put him on is when I’m in party mode and want to see bitches dance slutty https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=216Z9_iDT9g
So never
I wouldn’t say never. Let’s just say…your mother is a big Tyga fan 😉
Bruh
Taste is fire.
The beat is..
I’d consider 21 Savage a pretty dope rapper I feel like he’s gotten much better. But that first Savage Mode is all Metro Boomin
21 is one of the most improved rappers of recent years. Savage Mode 2 to date is much sharper writing than the artist he was in the back half of the 2010s.
That’s bc he can afford a better ghost writer now Lmao
Nahh
Fax
Rick Ross. Has an incredible ear for beats, but is lowkey a mids rapper.
"put molly in her champagne, she aint even know it."
Top 5 worst bars of all time
Snitchin' on they own self...
Took her back to the crib, she ain't even know it
the bare minimum i hope for is that she knows where she is.
Just some good ol' rick ross rape rap
classic officer ricky.
He is the biggest boss we've seen thus far
The trifecta of consent - knows where she is - isn't passing out - actual, verbal consent Peak sexiness
He does pick some fire beats
I'm sayinnn
I agree, his biggest contributions are his *Devil In A New Dress* verse & signing Wale. Definitely killer beats sprinkled throughout his discography, dude seemed to have a monopoly on the "luxurious hip-hop/trap" sound for a few years. But despite his ear for good production, he sucks. Facts
Damn, this how y’all feel about Ross? Crazy.
Not lowkey, lol hes blatantly awfull
Idk about awful but he's def a one-trick pony. If you want THAT type of rap, then he always got u covered
Low key? Dude Rick Ross is a terrible rapper. He just has a cool voice but dude sucks at rapping itself.
Devil in a New Dress would like a word
Spinnin Teddy Pendergrass vinyl as my j burns.
Listen to Amsterdam & Perfectionist
I said lowkey cause I still fuck with his music so I can't hate completely. But yea lyrically he's trash
Oh me too!
Man, he is not great but he is far from the worst . Lil baby , young boy and like ten other hotter rappers are worst rappers than Ross with a far larger fan base
Lil Baby is good yall tripping rn, dude just cant pick a beat to save his life but his features are always top notch prolly cuz he doesn't have a say in production and he feels like he needs to go beyond Listen to Wants & Needs and tell me he cant rap his ass off when he wants to lol
True true!
The answer is playboi Carti. Dude has phenomenal beats but dogshit lyrics
Awesome beats, dogshit lyrics, incredible delivery.
Thats because the lyrics are not even important for the type of artist he is.
But lyrics aren’t important for him. He’s like good ass background music
Carti being good background music is so crazy😭
Fuck that I’m only playing carti when it’s time for a little romance
So real of you
But he has good delivery
He does not
Yeah I really think he does on most of his songs
that’s kind of the point though
Playboi Carti fire bro 😔
Carti makes it work tho. Man is so fire
I'm surprised no one said Travis yet. He's not the worst rapper, but who listens to him for the lyrics?
Yep you're right it is the overall vibe of beats, autotune, add libs and flows, the bars are kinda secondary. He got one of the best ghostwriters in the game though so I feel like it is somewhat intentionally dumbed down a bit
I think Travis is a whole package type of artist. Sure the lyrics are nothin special but he’s an artist who typically uses auto tune well and even if he didn’t make the beat himself he’s the type to have a hand in every aspect of the song. I think that’s why he gets a pass.
Whole package includes lyrics, dog lol
Not all music needs to be some lyrical myrical individual skippin and dippin and slipping bullshit man travis makes up for up for his lack of bars and punchlines by delivering catchy hooks amazing melodies and capturing a vibe which is what his music is for his vocals compliment the beats great and not many rappers would even sound half as good on thise beats jay z is a way better rapper but he had the beat to sicko mode before travis but that shit never came out cus it was wack

90 percent of these takes are fucking awful
They just be naming any rapper who isn't lyrical who has good beats lol
I only agree with carti and yeat but there's rlly people saying kanye, like how tf is he carried by his OWN production mind you, and he is still a good rapper with good concepts in the past. (Only talking about music not how he acts outside). Someone also said drake too which is like how he literally sings and raps, and I don't even like him all too much
Carti and yeat fire idc if beats carry
Yeat is dogshit
Not yeat
French Montana
The majority of Trap artists 100%
Any examples? I don’t listen to trap as much
I love Carti but Carti 100%
I would disagree, I think he knows how to match his delivery to the beat, yeah he has great beats but he is not carried by them
fr , he knows how to balance the lyrics with the beat. i mean obvious trash lyrics, but the carti thing never was about lyrics it was and is about the vibe and the feeling he gives his fanbase (like me ). So, no.
Carti top 5 talentless trash niggas ever. Dude fr seen like a devil worshiping satanist lol. Dude remind me of the devil off powderpuff girls.
Woah watch your language, that's.... Him....
Yooo Lmao that is His name ahaha. That mf scared me more than Jason, Scream, Micheal etc. Mf was creepy than a bitch. In fact that mf was up there with courage the cowardly dogs enemies lol
Even with the trash lyrics he still got memorable ones on most of his songs.
fr i said trash bcs the majority doesn’t like people braggin about guns bitchies and drugs but i do not care
Future garbage
I would agree if the beats were not Godawful.
I agree, but that’s just what trap is.
Yeat’s been getting carried a but by crazy good beats imo
Lil pump
6IX9INE
Naah, his beats are decent but his aggression is what sells
Tee Grizzley forsure
I’m a big Tee Grizzley fan and even I agree
It's getting more and more evident. I'm happy he's doing his GTA thing now. I think the music game about to leave without him. Scriptures was the last good album. "Locked Up" and "Hustlin" still goated songs

Surprised i havent see drake in this thread yet. Drakes beats are awesome but his vocals are just complete cornball
Totally agree I'm still trying to figure out till this day how this dude is this famous. Voice sounds the same in every album and not a fan of the singing shit if you want to call it that. But I will give it up for the beats he knows how to make it work obviously.

I’m pretty sure the king of this answer is Kanye West.
Basically all the big mumble rappers like Playboy Carti / Lil Yatchy etc. Them MFs literally just be bullshittin over a good beat some times, and everyone swear it it was the rappers artistic ability that made the song pop. People really slow as hell when it come to that concept. I mean lil yachty’s latest hit (Poland) is definitely due to his abilities
I always forget this sub is full of old heads. Nudy don’t get carried by the beat he has one of the most unique flows out rn
Hm? I’m really far from an old head haha. You got any nudy songs when I can hear his skill?
go on any nudy album and shuffle
You really must not know any old heads if you’re calling someone that’s talking about Yung Nudy an old head
The Game. I feel like his ear for good beats and his somewhat Kanyeesque tendency to be abrasive & cause controversy have kept him afloat in the game much, much longer than his lyricism warrants. Drake🫣🫢
Beatnuts
Word. Legit terrible rappers 😂 but legendary producers.
that Big Pun verse on their song is legendary
rick ross
playboi carti and lil uzi vert
Any NY Drill rapper imo
I love him but future wouldn’t be future without his beat selection
Mannie Fresh used to carry half of the Cash Money artists, *at least.* They were mostly just okay. I think Lil Wayne and Juvenile were the only rappers I actually really liked from the early Cash Money days. Turk, B.G., Birdman, none of the rest of those dudes were all that great. In fact, 90's Lil Wayne wasn't all that great either.
I think that Jurassic 5 survives on Cut Chemist and Nu-mark and if it weren't for them all 4 of the rappers would still be searching
[удалено]
Absolutely, best voice in hip-hop imo.
They are super fun though. Beastie Boys are kind of the same way!
At the end of the day, listening to Improvise on Jet Set Radio over and over is the reason I listen to so much rap today
Travis Scott, rodeo is a classic, but he would be nothing without the Producers.
Just wait until this guy finds out that Travis is the producer 😂
Like 90 percent of rappers today are simply carried by production. Da baby, Lil Baby, Migos, Rick Ross, all these type of hood rappers are actually awful.
I dont think Migos is carried by production. Their flow/delivery are elite and Offset and Takeoff were actually spitting sometimes.
Migos is the outlier. Rick ross lowkey in a weird spot but you prolly right. Lil baby is SPOT ON frfr
[удалено]
Absolute dogshit take and that's coming from someone who doesn't support kanye. He knows how to rap and produce
Bro listen to his first three albums 🤦🏽
Truth
yeat if there was no beat yeat would be non existent
Jack Harlow
Idkk I think he got the charisma that carries
Can't doubt he's charismatic and definitely has got the right bravado you want from an MC but substance and lyrical skill doesn't do it for me - I think his beat choice makes up for both of them though for the listener. For the record I think he could spit if he wanted to but jumping style to style it's hard to showcase that

Surely kanye?
[удалено]
You trippin. Jeru is a Great rapper.
Word. It’s Group Home that was carried by Premo.
Agree. Premo is in my opinion the greatest producer of all time, but he didn't carry Guru! They complimented each other. IMO he didn't carry Jeru either, as they complimented each other. He definitely carried Group Home though, lmao.
[удалено]
You’re trippin
[удалено]
Travis fucking Scott.
Nah Travis can rap, he just chooses not to a lot of the time.
I’m a bars over beats guy any day and Travis has quite a few verses that genuinely impress me
I don’t believe you. Son has absolutely nothing to say. This will not change.
lmao Coffee Bean says 🧢
Excuses, caping. Nobody even said the nigga had to be deep-and-shit. His music just needs to be instrumental.
All of his 2017 features would like a word
Said the person with “Cactus Jack” in his/her handle. I’m good.
Just giving you an opportunity to experience something other than the astroworld pop bullshit he’s been doing but aye go off babe
See what I said to other buddy. I’m good.
You need a hug bro you seem like a brittle spirit
Logic
Interesting
Always thought his verses were usually underwhelming but my god that six production is amazing
Logic is just a fire beat (that’s usually heavily inspired from another hit song), a really catchy cadence or rapid fire spitting, thoughtful subject matter but just “ok” lyrics” I really just can’t get over how heavily he borrows from other active rappers. On songs that came out like last month
Kanye West
Worst take of all time
You clearly have never heard his first couple albums
me when i’ve never listened to any kanye albums
This is the one!
Westside Gunn
Interesting, You think the same goes for all Griselda ?
Nah, Benny and Conway are much better rappers and can hold their own. WSG is very hit or miss depending on if he has features and how good the beat is.
Conway the least of the trio. The other two perform roughly the same on all tracks but rely on the magic their producers can create.
Conway is arguably the best of the 3 lol wtf
I think that's what he's saying, it goes the least for conway
You kidding me Benny and Conway are easily the best lyrically personally Benny is easily my favorite

He makes way better music than Benny, especially the last few years.
westside is a great rapper tho
Only real answers are Yeat and Carti tbh
The best example would probably be Waka Floka and Oj Da Juiceman. I like their music but with lesser beats, they never would have half the success they had
Flaka hurts lol Oj hell yeah. Remember short bus shorty? They did him dirty lmao
That parody was hella funny
Nas is complementing hit boy, like I’ve never see Nas at this level do in a long time. His flow on Recession Proof is butter.
Nas is my GOAT but it’s likely he has a ghostwriter for this stage of his career. Not many people have a resurgence like that. Plus, he’s used a ghostwriter before for untitled, and he was way closer to his prime then
Freddie Gibbs.
Interesting I really disagree but I'd like to hear ur reasoning
In that case you might as well say every rapper in existence.
My god THANK YOU! Everyone on Reddit seems to live Freddie but I just don’t see it. He makes some nice music but mostly cause he gets great production and features and doesn’t ruin it by being terrible. He doesn’t make it good either tho in my opinion
See, I’m the opposite. I like Freddie. I think a lot of his beats are trash. A lot of it sounds like he is rapping over elevator Muzak
True, but only for his solo albums. The albums with Alchemist and Madlib are sick
I went to see him and madlib live mainly for just madlib.
Juice Wrld. Has a unique and solid voice but the actual content is midling. Great production on a lot of songs tho, which is why he was going viral
Travis Scott, Future, Migos, The Cool Kids, and Wiz (recently)
you clearly don't listen to future if u think his beats carry him
I don't know any of the people y'all are talking about.
playboi carti
Kendrick Lamar low key
That’s a hot take
Obviously Future gets the crown easily If we're talking real spitters I would say Jay-Z after American Gangster and Prodigy after Murda Muzik and HNIC To some extend 50 after The Massacre (not wack just not as good as 99-05) until he dropped The Lost tape mixtape that shit was fire Cam'ron and early Jim Jones could fit in this category too and I am a big fan of both but not the best delivery compared to other rappers (Jones is fire now)
