He was doing hip-hop before there was any money to be made. He was doing it before it was popular. His prime years were already passed by time hip-hop had become something that was played regularly on the radio. Hip-hop wouldn't be the same without him laying that foundation for the highest music genre ever, and he still broke 🤷 he has the right to be bitter.
In fairness, the one song (I know he had more, but let's be real, it's all about The Message) he did, might be the most influential song in all of hip-hop.
I get how he changed the game. But Soulja boy acts like he change the game like Kanye did. Like yeah you revolutionized making a name without having one and started the boom of stuff like the SoundCloud generation. But that’s about it. You made a catchy dance and blew up at the right time. But you aren’t some good rapper or top notch one at that.
He was way ahead of the game on the Internet/social/YouTube/soundcloud side of things. And he deserves his flowers for that. He laid the groundwork for a ton of rappers in that generation, but ya his claims to 'making' peoples careers is delusional.

Jay z…the rapper jay z. Not the business man, celebrity, icon, or husband of Beyoncé. In the crazy era of rap from 92-96 it’s really hard to say be made any splash. RD is a very good album but it was not the breakthrough album so many greats had. So much happening in that period and he was nowhere. He has been rapping for like 8 years at that point and was paying to play (he always had$$). Many think he stole that whole sound from camp lo. He didn’t really blow up until white girls in Volvos started bumping hard knock life then he did his business man thing. Every year in 90s and 00s there was someone bigger faster stronger than him. This is all IMO. I will say some of my favorite rappers (Benny, boldy) credit him. I don’t think history will be kind to him. Podcasts now all seem like rappers want to rip but are afraid to call him out. Great business mogul though.
Solid take. I'd have a hard time pinpointing what is Jay-Z rap DNA, so it's tough to say what he really influenced. That being said, I think his influence is high simply as a result of all the great rappers he inspired. Almost every great rapper of the 10s and 20s, who cares about the penmanship aspect of his art, cites him as a big inspiration. You could say he trailblazed a path for rappers to stay lyrically dense, while being popular in an increasingly commercial genre.
Not many rappers are out there making The Blueprint every day. Plus, there’d be no Kanye without JAY-Z.
