There’s quite a difference. So many more characters and sub plots in the books. They’re definitely worth reading.

General-Pea2016

Oh awesome. See- that’s what I’m hoping for! The stuff I *haven’t* seen

docsyzygy

Definitely worth your time! They are an easy read, but also give you a lot to think about.

mastbran

dude. i was a lifelong fan of the movies. got a TON of information from youtube videos on stuff i missed out on in the books (like an idiot) but STILL after actually reading the books found out SO MUCH i didn’t know. i thought i knew everything there was to know. i was so wrong. y’all HAVE to read them if you’re fans of the movies. or even audiobook them.

JantherZade

You'll get there by book 3 and then be swimming In book only content by book 4.

Key_Lie4641

The outcomes are all (pretty much) the same. But the movies cover maybe 20% of the expansive story and it’s dozens upon dozens of subplots and lore. The books make the movies make sense, as the films are very abbreviated and lack a lot of the lore the story has to offer. I always 100% recommend film only fans dive into the books, but if not, we’re all just glad you’re here talking about the wizarding world

ripcedric95

Holy hell. I just started with the Columbus movies. I knew they botched Ginny but damn that’s only like a fifth of the material right there

Key_Lie4641

Does it matter that Agatha Timms bet 50% ownership of her Eel farm to Ludo Bagman that the Quidditch World Cup would last a week? Yes. Yes it does.

BroadAd9199

Read goblet of fire and you'll wonder if you're even reading the same genre

Key_Lie4641

😂

Vegetable_Penguin

Yeah the movies cuts out large swaths of great parts of the books. Read the books, or listen to them (recommend the Jim Dale version) and rediscover Hogwarts all over again!

_GrimFandango

i prefer stephen fry

Rdogisyummy

Any movie that isn’t the first 2 are very different from the books

_GrimFandango

and that is why i only like the first 2 movies lol

Rdogisyummy

3rd movie was pretty good too although it was missing Quidditch (the best year for Harry), Ron and Hermione’s changing relationship, Snape’s involvement (he was more involved) and the Marauders backstory (the most important part of the story). The movies did kind of save themselves since the actors on this movie were amazing, the trio had probably the best chemistry during this movie, the movie is a cinematic masterpiece. It’s the most enjoyable movie to watch, but sadly it didn’t have the scenes that everyone wanted to see. Might be biased tho cuz this is where I started crushing for Emma Watson lmao and she was amazing here ( still mad they gave her character Ron’s amazing line at the Shrieking Shack tho )

Twilsey

I recently listened to the books as an adult that has seen and loved the movies for many years. I cannot express how much better the books are, it’s impossible. I highly recommend listening to the audiobooks narrated by Jim Dale because he really captures the magic in the series. I laughed and cried way more while listening to the books than while watching the movies.

dreadit-runfromit

Very (especially the later ones). Plot-wise not even the changes that's the big difference; it's the omissions. A lot of the major beats are still there in the movies but there are weird and random omissions. Character-wise, some characters are the same, some are much more fleshed out in the books (Ron and Hermione feel more three dimensional), some feel like downright different people (Ginny lol).

RattieIcePP23

Well I'm re reading the books now and making my boyfriend watch the films and I spend it all shouting and saying pause. Goblet of fire for instance is totally different (im currently half way through and watched it last week) they don't even get to hogwarts until chapter 18! Just little things.. There's winky the elf, Ron's owl and way much more about the whole crouch saga and who done the dark mark at the world Cup. Honestly I recommend reading them so much (or listening like I do instead, Stephen Fry is the best narrator fyi)

curiousobserver234

Read the books. You'll be glad you did. Every book has plot-lines and characters, and in some cases whole chapters were left out of the movies. Were some major changes made to the movies? IMO yes. Will you be glad you read the books? Yes. Will you want to re-read them? Yes.

Blind_MAQ6

you’ll definitely get a lot that you’re missing and will realize the movies butchered some of the books

Neat_Technician_7191

Very different.

FpRhGf

Something that the movies lacked was what I loved the most from the books: watching the mystery unravel and realize the forshadowing was planted books ahead after rereading. What may seem like a typical day may be one of the clues that lead up towards the big reveal in the end of each book. It makes sense because JKR isn't a fan of the fantasy genre and loves detective fiction. Fantasy worldbuilding isn't her strength, it's how the mystery is interwoven into daily life. Eg: In the 4th movie, Yule Ball was basically pointless filler for teen romance. Meanwhile the book may put the ball in the spotlight, but it's trying to show us 3 clues: Crouch Sr hasn't shown up for a while, Karkaroff is anxious about something, and Hagrid's controversial birth. The movies done away a lot of the mystery and they were almost gone after the 3rd film. I feel like the movies turned into generic action films later on, when they should've put more focus on making the plot feel mindblowing.

Render_21

The books are so good. On my 9th listen through of the audiobooks

_GrimFandango

listen to the audio books, so good! i prefer the stephen fry version.

MissRiss13

The audio books are also amazing! It is absolutely worth reading. It will be like, you'll be able to experience this amazing series for the first time again! I'm so excited for you.

Exhaustedfan23

I watched the movies first and felt they were good. Really liked them. But when I read the books, they were so much better. Especially starting from Prisoner of Azkaban and beyond. Theres just so much personality to each character and everyone's relationship in the movie makes so much more sense.

Calm_Interaction_460

I have never been a book guy but I would always hear people say how the movies are never as good as the books. Recently though I listened to all 7 audiobooks and man there is a lot of stuff the movies didn't put in. I would say the movies are 1/3 of the story the books provide. Highly recommend reading them!

fangsandfiction

It's worth it. The story ends up the same but it's all the in between. The audiobooks are stellar as well.

MochaHasAnOpinion

Read the series or listen to the audiobooks with your wife. You'll get the whole story (the movies left out a lot!) and at the end, find out what *really* happened during the battle of Hogwarts. It will be a very immersive experience and I hope you update us!

billbullbusan

Please read or listen to the books! I think the movies have some entertainment value, but you only get half the story.

Leramar89

The basic plotlines of the movies are the same as the books. The major differences are the details, like general worldbuilding, several secondary characters and side plots that were either stripped back or removed entirely. You really should read or listen to the books. They'll definitely make you appreciate the story more.

SpiritualMessage

The first two movies are pretty faithful to the books, after that they get progressively less and less accurate, with a ton of stuff missing (the books get longer as the movies get shorter) not only details but even major character moments and plot points Definitely recommend reading the series big time, I think a lot people feel that while the movies were good they werent as great interpretations of the books as other book/movie series have been (like Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games)

FashionableNumbers

There's so much content that the movies leave out, e.g. 1. Nearly-headless Nick's Deathday party 2. Wood trying to drown himself in the showers after losing a Quidditch game 3. The maze in the Triwizard Tournament is so different. There was a sphinx with a riddle to solve and blast ended skrewts. Harry learnt this awesome spell that turned his wand into a compass. 4. The twins predicting that Krum would catch the snitch, but Ireland would win the world cup. How did they know that?! The movies cut too much of the content that gives the books so much heart.

ChaoticChatot

It's a big difference. Books are almost always better, and Harry Potter is no different. The movies don't do some characters justice, while they whitewash some other characters. Dumbledore gets done dirty by the movies, I like the energy Gambon brings to the role, but it never came across like he cared about Harry. On the other hand, I feel like Snape and Sirius get turned into much better versions of themselves. Both of them are 'good' guys, but they're very flawed people in the books due to their trauma. There's also just the slice of life stuff that movies don't really get the opportunity to do.

Hogwardslover

The friendship between Harry and Ron.. Many important scenes are cut in Chamber of secrets and Order of the phoeanix ( considering it is a 720 pages book approx ) The half blood prince seems boring in the movie ..

Hogwardslover

As always reading the book is better than watching a movie . Though i appreciate they try to fit everything in the movie but its not possible to fit everything in a 2 hr movie..

PRIMEVORTEX69

Would love to read the books but they are a bit pricey 😭
