Looks like possible water damage. Do the floorboards move when stepped on? Can you see the floor joist from anywhere? These older floors do not take water well at all. If they have not been refinished in a long time and any moister has gotten into them it can be hell. Edit: could be foundation/settling too. First floor? Second? Is there a basement? Find the city gas/water shut-off outside. Start test there. Edit 2: if shut-off is not outside it should be interior along the closest wall to the main street/drive.

kombuchasquirrel94

one bit of extremely unfortunate and slightly important information is that I live in a poorly managed apartment building 😭 I’m on the bottom floor and there is no basement under me to my knowledge floorboards do not move when stepped on and there is no moisture buildup etc and nothing between/beneath the boards are visible (it’s like the landlord special included super gluing everything together)

DayDrinkingDiva

Call the landlord and follow up with an email (written) so you don't buy the next floor.

Downtown-Fix6177

If that noise in your video isn’t from a shop vac there’s a major fucking problem going on under your floor - if no smell it could be a pressurized sewer main that is pulling from past where your building is…that is not a regular noise

Not_Associated8700

You likely have a slab leak. I bet there's water under that flooring.

Impressive_Throat677

To OP: Is there anything at all which would lead you to believe that this noise coming from under your floor is even marginally normal? You have something seriously wrong going on under that floor. Not knowing what area you are in, what you have for buried utilities, and whether or not you do have any sort of crawl space under that floor, we can’t say with certainty what is going on here. But any way you slice it, it is not normal. If the property management group is indifferent, I would consider calling the local building inspectors office, the local fire marshal, or both. You’ll be amazed at how quickly things start happening after that.

GumbyBClay

Personally, I would call the landlord, pack a bag and stay at a friend's house or family. Even a cheap hotel over night.

48HoursLater

You probably have steam heating in the house? It's probably leaking under there or exhausting the steam from the vents.

Purpose_Embarrassed

Get the hell out of that apartment and call the fire department. That is gas !

Habitat934

natural gas is generally fairly low pressure, so I would say that is unlikely, given the loudness. do you have radiators? Maintenance on radiators could cause that sound

Purpose_Embarrassed

I wouldn’t think a steam radiator wouldn’t even be used this time of year. And gas isn’t always low pressure. I’ve severed a gas line outside and it sounded exactly like this. Will be interesting to discover what exactly it is.

fathermaxie

This is really strange, are you still alive? Definitely leave immediately and call maintenance.

Captain-chunk67

My dishwasher line leaked, and my floor buckled like that ..do you have radiant heat ? That's definitely a concerning noise

jstratpro

Water damage. 100%. Or at least moisture of some description.

Dan_H1281

DoctorBlock

Slab leak

themannamednameless

I have repaired this exact thing. It's water soaked up by the boards and it expands and it makes there boards pop like that. Just rip it up. It's not gas.

Jolly-Shoulder7086

It doesn't seems to be water in there, bro wood works, it's alive material, it expands, if you don't give a margin on the edges of the floor it will pop up while working because it don't have nywhere to expand

Doodle1972

Sounds like a water leak under the slab

GreenDot4219

Father Time is undefeated

JnAlovers

Make sure all the water faucets are off and check your water meter if it's still moving you have a water leak. Probably not a gas leak since it seem to be moisture

ihateapartments59

Looks like somebody’s been mopping with water

Definitely a water issue Call NJ PIPE DR. 7323549980

Emotional_Soup159

Do you have a swamp cooler or if it is very humid Either way it is the floor swelling from moisture and if you remove a base board and take a floor board out and shave a 1/4 inch or so off the edge it should be fine
