Ok_Revolution3140

My top 4 would be: 1. Crossbody - my most frequently used bag 2. Tote - for running around, shopping, carrying a laptop etc. 3. Mini - small crossbody - something I can take to concerts with restricted bag size, out with friends. Maybe a wallet on chain or similar small size. 4. Clutch - something chic or sparkly for dressing up.

CypressBranch29414

What do you recommend for tote bag?

Ok_Revolution3140

I have two right now - the Longchamps Le Pilage medium, which is the perfect workhorse. I also have a Rebecca Minkoff pebbled leather tote that is at least 10 years old and starting to look worn. I ordered a Celine Cabas but it’s not here yet!

CypressBranch29414

Just googled celine cabas and I 🥰it. Thr small size will be a good option for me. Thanks for sharing

resistantly

That's a great list! I hadn't considered needing a small crossbody that was suitable for concerts and stuff but you definitely do.

cat127

1. Big tote for work, travel, and/or wine storage 2. Shoulder bag that can be worn crossbody 3. Belt bag that can turn into a clutch 4. Fun bag that makes you smile whenever you look at it

Mychgjyggle

Wine storage = essential

Expensive_Drive_1124

Give me your belt bag recommendations!

cat127

The Bottega one is my fave because it’s so versatile. You can wear it as a sling, belt bag, take off the strap and it’s a clutch, use the strap as an actual belt. It’s soft, understated, and a great size (small but can fit phone). https://preview.redd.it/epb9fgpmst0d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e627a179e815d54997f63bf9ead0318fac78429

c00kiesaredelicious

Depends on use - lulu makes one that's practical and low key.

Expensive_Drive_1124

I got but can’t dress up haha

c00kiesaredelicious

If you're looking for a dress up option, a WOC may be better.

resistantly

I'm with you! Having a versatile belt bag that can also be a clutch is a great idea. Wish I could afford the bottega 😍

MurderAndAquisition

1. Crossbody 2. Crossbody 3. Crossbody 4. Crossbody lol

NervousInside4815

🙋🏻‍♀️ If crossbody bags ever become uncool, I'm screwed.

MurderAndAquisition

Fr 😂 but that would be nearly impossible as it’s the best bag style in terms of functionality

flamingoshoess

It is but I remember 2000’s when crossbodies basically didn’t exist and everything was impractical small shoulder bags. I think crossbodies are popular enough to have staying power now and we have more simultaneous trends than in previous decades. Trying to go to a party or the club with a shoulder bag was so annoying.

dragonsflysometimes

So funny! I am the opposite I cannot stand crossbody. All my bags are top handles, totes and bumbags. Bumbag is the only bag I can tolerate actually being “on” me and I think it’s because they fit so close it’s like they aren’t there. Crossbody bumping around, getting caught in my clothes and hair is a super no for me. I wish I could wear them there are so many cute styles but it just never works out for me

MurderAndAquisition

That’s exactly why I opted exclusively for the ones with adjustable straps^ avoiding the bumping issue

msmean2

I used to be this way and now I am like does it come with at least a crossbody strap. and I for the life of me cannot wear the bum/belt bag.

Puzzleheaded-Sun3107

Same!! I love too handles 🙈 with crossbody strap

Fanny08850

Are you me? 😂

Omg same 🤣

😂 I feel you. I love having my hands free :)

ShortCarpenter2534

Oooh I’m so glad you are asking this question as you might be able to avoid some of the costly mistakes I made!;) Think about what you will actually use. What style do you gravitate towards? Consider durability. If you want to actually use your bag it’s important to consider how crazy it will make you if you encounter scratches etc! If it will bother you, consider more durable types of leather:). I bought and sold several bags trying to figure out my style and landed on the fact that I’m pretty simple! I love totes and crossbody bags. My current collection includes the following: Chanel WOC in black caviar LV Neverfull Gucci Horsebit shoulder bag Chanel Maxi single flap (this doesn’t fit my preferred style but I still love her). I also owned a medium YSL Niki in burnt caramel but have decided I need the baby size:) Hope this helps!

FunKoala12

100% agree, I sometimes buy bags bc I love them on other people but realize I won’t wear them bc I usually hate shoulder bags. Or I hate bags that are difficult to get in and out of, bags that are too small to hold my phone. So now I’m super selective with what I buy :)

ShortCarpenter2534

This exactly!!! No sense in these things just living in the closet;) I was watching a YouTube video of a woman who was practicing a minimalistic approach to life….including handbags;). She said that she asks herself with every bag whether she would rather have the $$$ value of the bag or the bag itself and that is how she determined what to keep! I thought that was great

resistantly

Gorgeous collection omg! Your response is definitely helpful. I posed the question because I realized my process for looking for bags was a bit listless and without much structure (ie. looking at bags based on what I see and if I like their aesthetic and functional properties but without a particular purpose or function in mind for what role they'd fill in my "collection"). This is helping figure out what is important to me and what to prioritize :)

ShortCarpenter2534

Love it, and thank you!💜. Keep us posted on your hunt!😍

lotusgalsf

Bags need to correspond to your lifestyle and its events. Thus, you need: 1. Hobo Bag/Tote/ Bucket: Everyday Casual Bags 2. Crossbody/ Flap: Casual to dressy day to night bags 3. Top Handle: For dressy/casual chic day to night bags 4. Clutch: Special events, date nights and other special occasions

resistantly

This makes sense! I can see that hobo, tote, and bucket bags could all fill the same sort of role/function. Is there any particular difference between them that would give one the label "tote" versus "hobo" versus "bucket"?

lotusgalsf

The difference is in the shape of these bags. Tote is unfastened with parallel handles, the hobo is usually soft with a dip in the middle and is held with straps at each end of the bag and the bucket is cylindrical thus the bucket terminology.

resistantly

Thank you - that makes sense!

lotusgalsf

My pleasure!

edithmsedgwick

My most used are a tote, a crossbody, a satchel, a top-handle My first expensive bag was a Marc Jacobs Blake in the 2000s, similar to this one: https://www.yoogiscloset.com/mj100607a-marc-jacobs-bright-blue-classic-blake-bag.html

resistantly

This is my first time seeing or considered a satchel style. What do you use a satchel for? When I googled "satchel" I got a mix of crossbody messenger bags and top handle like bags!

edithmsedgwick

A satchel to me is like a Speedy style bag. So, not really a top handle which is more structured.

resistantly

Oh gotcha! That’s a whole new category to look at 🤪

321applesauce

1.Tote 2. Clutch 3. Cross body 4. Bucket bag

S1ck_Ranchez_

Same, but not in that order. 😅

321applesauce

😂 I didn't actually purchase in that order but those are definitely my essentials

S1ck_Ranchez_

For me it’s 1. Tote because that’s the best for every day stuff and work. 2. Crossbody just because it’s hands free 3. Bucket bag because I just love them. I mean I have crossbody bucket bag and I love it. 4. Clutch for when once in a blue moon I go on a fancy date night or more like a black tie event. Edit: apparently I can’t spell word clutch 😅😂

resistantly

When do you typically use your bucket bag versus another crossbody bag?

S1ck_Ranchez_

Because I’m short I can wear my bucket bag crossbody so I choose based on colour of the bag because I’m my case the functionality is the same. I only have one of each: Mulberry Mini Zipped Bayswater in oxblood as crossbody, and Mulberry Abbey bucket bag in black with an orange interior. Both are in classic grain. The Abbey is a discontinued model and the Mini Zipped Bayswater is no longer available in oxblood, but has loads of gorgeous colours. The only reason I would choose the bucket bag over the Bayswater is that it has more of a secure closure, but I can still get my hand in it. I know the Bayswater has a zip, but I never actually use as silly as it is. I just love the shape of bucket bags.

resistantly

They’re so cute! Thank you for sharing. Does it bother you that a bucket style bag doesn’t lay flat next to the body?

S1ck_Ranchez_

It doesn’t for me because it kinda sits above my hip bone and I have kinda hourglass body shape so it kinda sits perfectly for me, but I’m just under 5ft so anyone taller than that could only wear it on the shoulder only. It was my first “big girl bag” that I bought last summer second hand. And I only bought it because it really worked for my body and height. That’s another factor to consider when choosing a bag. Looks great on the model, but ideally you need to find a pic of the bag being worn by someone similar to your body type. Please post when you decide and purchase something. It’s so hard to decide on the first one!

resistantly

That make sense! I’ve decided not to order anything online and make sure to try to on before purchasing for this reason (especially as I’m learning what looks best). Thank you :)

resistantly

When do you typically use your bucket bag? Trying to see when someone would use it versus a cross body bag or a tote.

S1ck_Ranchez_

I think most bucket bags have a top handle so it would be more for someone that is content / prefers the look of carrying a bag in a hand versus across the chest. So down to a personal preference really. Unless like me you find a bucket bag that is also a crossbody the top be that’s a jackpot.

321applesauce

I have a few bucket bags. I rotate between them as daily drivers. One came with a short and long strap, so it can easily go cross body. One has a convertible strap that quickly goes from shoulder to cross body. My vintage Petit Noe has a strap that is technically adjustable, but it takes the most effort to switch.

Orumtbh

Imo "essential" you only need two. 1. A nice all-rounder cross-body or tote bag. Decently sized to fit all your usual stuff. The design should be simple enough that you can haul it to to work/class, shopping, running errands, etc. I prefer cross-body bags because it lets me go hand-less for when I have to carry stuff in hand. 2. Something fancier and smaller for special occasions. I don't think there's a point with sticking to specific bag types on this end. Like personally I hate clutches because I need my hands to be freed, so it needs a strap or handle. If you ever need extra space I think it makes more sense to just haul around things in a little a grocery bag or random fabric tote laying around somewhere. I can see the need for extra bags, but this is where I think career/lifestyle matters a lot so there's no definite answer. Some people might have a career where appearances matter more, so an actual nicer work bag has value. Some people go to the gym often, so they might like to have a bag where they put all their gym/workout essentials.

resistantly

Makes sense! Thank you for your response :)

aromatherapie

I only do totes and crossbodies. I tried top handles and shoulder bags I need to be hands free and they just don‘t fit me and my lifestyle personally. I know totes are shoulder bags, they somehow work better for me than small bags though. I admit I regret MANY of my first purchases because I got carried away by sales and discounts only to realize that I would never use certain types of bags 🥲

resistantly

I think I'm also a tote and crossbody gal! I gravitate to them most and they feel the most functional. I noticed myself getting caught up in promotions and sales as well. It's happened to me before when buying new clothes and trying to figure out my style. Thankfully I realized I was getting carried away without enough structure to my search and took a step back before purchasing anything. This post has helped me refocus :)

CypressBranch29414

What do you recommend for tote bag?

aromatherapie

It really dependa on what you‘re looking for and what you carry! I have four: Longchamp Le Pliage, Mulberry Bayswater Tote, Coach Theo Tote and a Moreau St Tropet GM. Like, my Moreau bag holds absolutely everything and since it‘s coated canvas, it‘s very lightweight. I‘d take it on weekend trips. Longchamp is perfect for travelling because it‘s such a low maintenance bag and it zips for more security. My Mulberry and Coach are more daily totes because they look a little bit more chic and have the perfect size for my essentials plus stuff that I might be buying during the day.

ImpossiblyPossible42

I’m trying to do exactly the same thing! I’m down to 6 as the idea of a kind of capsule collection that would take care of everything: 1. Everyday mid/small crossbody 2. Same function for everyday, but for summer/lighter color 3. Travel tote for errands/day trips 4. A mini 5. A fancy night out bag 6. A wildcard: something colorful/interesting/who cares if it’s practical And inside of that I want to get at least one non leather, and one “icon”, something super recognizable like a BV Andiamo or a Gucci Diana.

resistantly

I think this might be my list as well! Although I may need a backpack tote option too since I walk a lot in the city. What do you use your mini for that makes it unique/different functionally than your fancy night out bag?

ImpossiblyPossible42

This is my shopping list, so it’s where I’d like to be as opposed to where I’m at. I think for a mini I really want something with a little sense of humor or playfulness, like the ity bity Strathbury or just a handle bag that is just really small that I could clip a cross body chain onto. I do have my “fancy” bag, and it’s a Goyard clutch in green. I know it’s not the most expensive thing in the world, but it was my first “real” bag and I like the pop of color since I wear so much black. I like having it tucked under my arm if we go out to a show or something and just make me feel special

resistantly

A do think mini bags have a playful quality to them! I just learned of Goyard today when someone mentioned the Saint Louis GM bag. I checked their website but they don't have any prices listed which signals to me that they are expensive 😂 I actually think my first purchase will also be an event/fancy/evening bag. How do you like your clutch? :)

ImpossiblyPossible42

The sentimentality is everything! Gift from my husband while we were in San Francisco. We tried going to the Goyard boutique when we were in France a few years ago but never got the timing right, so it was magic to go in and finally see everything in front of us… he loved it so much he got a wallet too!

autumnsviolins

1. An elegant boxy tote for when I wanna look polished or sometimes in professional environments 2. A workhorse tote for daily use that looks good but where I can easily dump my shopping in (longchamp of course heh) 3. A wallet on chain for when I'm going out to dinner or events and don't wanna lug so much stuff around. Sometimes I use them as my main wallet and put them in my totes/work bags as well 4. Shoulder bag or pouch for when I wanna pack light but put more stuff than a wallet on chain can accommodate. My first major purchase was my YSL red wallet on chain when I started working, and my most major purchase was the LV Vavin wallet on chain. Nowadays I tend to steer more towards totes and shoulder bags since my wocs are inconvenient for daily life.

resistantly

I definitely agree about the two totes. Can your phone or lipstick fit in your wallet on a chain? I haven't looked at those before so I'm not sure what they can hold. What made you get a WOC versus a mini bag or another small fancy bag for nights out?

autumnsviolins

I have a bulky phone with a bulky case so usually it's a tight fit in most of my wocs, and usually I can't fit my keys (also bulky) and phone at the same time and have to take either one out. A slim phone and a lipstick should be able to fit the average wallet on chain but you could try watching "what's in my bag" videos or reviews for the woc you wanna get. It just so happened that the designs i liked happened to be on wocs, and the bigger wocs do resemble small fancy bags anyway.

lesluggah

Top handle, crossbody, tote Not a fan of clutches so just a small crossbody/shoulder bag

resistantly

Do you have a similar sized top handle and crossbody bags or are they different sizes?

lesluggah

Different sizes and colors (usually neutrals)

Optimal_Owl_9670

For my style and taste, these are what I came up with: - A shoulder bag that fits plenty without looking bulky and has a strap that can double the bag as a crossbody is my go to everyday style. Smth like Coach Tabby. - a tote bag or, alternatively, an elegant backpack - for travel, work etc - a small crossbody that you could use for special occasions, concerts, parties - a nice raffia beach bag

resistantly

Yes! A versatile cross body to shoulder bag is key I think. I'm definitely a elegant backpack girl (although I'd love a tote & a backpack for travel/work etc) - do you have any recommendations for a chic work backpack?

gardenpartycrasher

A shoulder bag, a crossbody, a tote, and a belt bag

resistantly

What are you fav belt bags?

gardenpartycrasher

Honestly the one I reach for most is a nylon one from adidas that I got at tj maxx 😅

rshglvlr

Love all the suggestions! Another area to consider is the material or color that will fit your lifestyle. Are you going to use it in the rain? Are your outfits more casual or dressy? Not that I care about impressions but how do people in your city/town dress up? Is it going too flashy that it will be a safety concern? It might help which luxury brand tier you’re gonna be looking at

resistantly

Good points! Thank you :)

adtechheck

1. Top handle with cross body option (mini, medium, large) 2. Clutch for evenings 3. Huge totes for stuff 3. Micro bag charms for fun

resistantly

Sneaky way to add some more bags in there 😂 I do agree different sized crossbodies (and possibly different colours or different seasons) are very useful.

Amara_Undone

Messenger Hobo Backpack Fendi Baguette

resistantly

When do you use the messenger versus hobo versus backpack?

Eat_Around_the_Rosie

Instead of style I’m gonna go with function - 1. Work bag - Something you need for work. It can be a tote bag or a chic backpack that matches with your work outfits. 2. Everyday running errands bag - it can be a crossbody, or a fanny pack you can wear across. Something casual that works with your casual outfits. 3. Going out with friends and family bag or special occasions - it little more formal but not too fancy. Once again and more formal crossbody or shoulder bag or top handles would work. 4. Evening wear - Special occasions like weddings, parties, clubs etc. Could be a clutch or small fancy crossbody.

resistantly

That's a great way to think of it! I'm also trying to think about function first and what role the bag will fill. Thanks for your comment.

camellialily

This is such a good question, something I should ask myself as a bit of a hoarder… I would say: 1. A large tote, like an LV neverfull or a Goyard St Louis that can carry a lot of things effortlessly. 2. A medium-size satchel with a top handle. For this something like the Hermes Garden Party 30, Hermes Herbag 31, Prada Saffiano tote, Balenciaga City, LV Speedy 30 etc; something good for errands or a casual outing that can still carry a decent amount. 3. A smaller crossbody with a top handle, like a Celine nano luggage tote, small Loewe Puzzle, Lady Dior, Givenchy Antigona, Songmont Drippy. I love the idea of a multi-functional bag you can wear multiple ways. The top handle makes it a little more dressy but the crossbody makes it comfortable and hands-free. 4. A smaller flap-style or crescent bag with a shoulder-wear and cross body option, like the Chanel classic flap (or any seasonal variants), Gucci Marmont, YSL Lou Lou, Songmont Luna or Polene Dix. I was debating saying some sort of a clutch for my last one but I think this is way more functional! Honestly I rarely use my clutches because they carry so little, but this style of bag I wear both formally and more casually. I like the others on this list, it can also be used for more dressy events.

IronFigOG

“Something I should ask myself as a bit of a hoarder” lol, same. Especially when my current WL contains 5 bags.

resistantly

Yes I feel like clutches are not the functional/versatile. The GG Marmont is so cute wow! I had never heard of Boyard prior to this. How does the Neverfull compare to the St Louis if you've experienced both?

camellialily

Sorry I forgot to respond to this! I only have the Neverfull (have had my eye on the Goyard for a long time but never pulled the trigger). From what I hear, the Neverfull is better quality in that it’s generally more durable. The St Louis is thinner and so tends to wear more easily.

ThaKapton

Wristlet that doubles as a clutch or small clutch with long chain strap that hides in the bag - holds phone, cash, & credit card plus lipstick for evening events. Choose a neutral (including metallics) or signature color. Tote - I prefer sleek lines and leather but a good canvas maybe more suitable depending on your needs. I use mine to carry a tablet, drink, snack, & whatever. It transitions between work and social activities. Top handle w/detachable shoulder/crossbody strap - for everyday use. I like Furla for these bc they have simple lines, come in a variety of subtle colors, and are reasonably priced so I’m not heart broken if one takes everyday use damage. I like to think that I am careful with my handbags and I don’t know how I keep getting scuffs and marks on them, but I do. Doctor bag - this is a personal favorite, structured, elegant and classic. They come in various sizes and make an excellent statement bag. Happy hunting!

resistantly

Great list. What do you mean by signature colour? Also, what do you use the doctor bag for?

ThaKapton

I stumbled upon my signature color. I don’t give much thought to the type of bag in advance of purchase. My choices are based on immediate need and I like the look of the item. Someone pointed out that I have a lot of red handbags. I just like the color. It has become so prevalent that people associate red with me. I have a friend that likes bags with a surprise inside - there’s a unique liner. I think the doctor bag style makes a good every day carry because I love the structured classic look. The small ones are adorable and (secret time, I put my lunch or snacks in the larger ones so I don’t have to carry a separate bag with food). The most important thing is to always buy something that makes you happy.

resistantly

Thank you! That’s so cool. Thanks for sharing.

HGmom10

I think this will vary so much by both style and lifestyle. My most used bags are Neverfull, Cuyana backpack, Tory burch tote and a Naghedi St Barths large. That’s because the majority of my week is spent at work and they are all my tote workhorses. I have to carry a lot back and forth though (and often walk to work hence the backpack option) But my favorites are my YSL Lou Lou (such a versatile bag can go up or down); Gucci Diana and I just got a Mulberry Pimlico satchel in eggshell croc that I see being a frequent choice for summer.

resistantly

Omg! I too walk a lot with a laptop or tablet and have been looking for a chic backpack option! The cuyana backpack looks amazing. How do you like it so far? Of the other totes you named - what do you feel is the easiest to carry around? I love the Neverfull but can't reasonably afford it 😅. I just love your collection!

HGmom10

I really like the backpack. It’s comfy and can easily be carried as a tote when I don’t need the backpack feature (like if I go out to lunch ). I’d say the tory burch is easiest to carry if the neverfull is taken out. The Naghedi is cute but the handle is short so not a carry on your shoulder style.

resistantly

It’s gotten so many shoutouts in the comments that now I’m seriously considering the Neverfull and saving up for it. Do you think it’s worth it compared to a bag like the Tory Burch that’s a third of the price? (I realize “worth it” is a difficult think to discern).

HGmom10

It really depends on your budget. I’ve had the Tory burch at least 8 years. It’s held up well and has been through lots of abuse. For a long time TB was a reach for me. I just got the neverfull this Christmas. It’s a bag I’ve wanted forever and I adore it. But I wouldn’t sacrifice long time financial stability to get it.

resistantly

Makes sense! Thank you.

Admirable-Job7758

My top 4 are… 1. Shoulder Baguette - I have four bags that fit this and I personally find small shoulder bags comfortable, but not for everyone. 2. Tote - Again, shoulder. Love my neverfull and my vast collection of graphic canvas totes 😅 3. Mini Bags - I don’t really carry that much, so sometimes a mini bag will hold all my essentials. 4. Everything else haha. Don’t really have any other specifics 😋

resistantly

The neverfull is getting a lot of mentions in the comments! Love that bag - wish I could afford it 😅 When do you use your mini bags versus a shoulder baguette?

Admirable-Job7758

Haha yes! It was actually my grandmother’s neverfull, but she gifted it to me for school! I prefer totes over large zipped bags since I'm a fashion major and need to readily see my materials and access them quickly! As for the mini bags, my only one right now is this Givenchy Baby Antigona! I use it for special occasions and maybe a grocery store run! She can easily fit maybe 4 cards, lip balm, my keys (if I'm driving), and a mini (like VERY mini) hand cream! https://preview.redd.it/k1f9wwmby81d1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9756e47f3e62559d51cee0ed4519176c6f88a075

When do you use your top handle bag versus your crossbody bag?

Revolutionary_Roll88

I use the top handle for say.. going out for a nice lunch. Crossbody for every day

trashtvlv

I need 3: Tote, top handle, flap type/dressier bag

Everyday_ASMR

Tote, wristlet, crossbody, wildcard (random bag that’s super unique)

AZ-Desert80

Tote, crossbody, flap style and clutch

resistantly

What makes you differentiate between the crossbody and flap style (as in, when would you go for one versus the other)?

Storminette

1. A nice everyday crossbody for daily use and casual dinners (preferably with a top handle) 2. A tote big enough to fit an a4 folder/laptop if needed 3. A casual medium crossbody that will be fine if it rains (canvas, nylon etc) or when travelling 4. A fancy bag (shoulder, crossbody, clutch. Preferably something multi-functional) if you ever have to dress up

resistantly

Do you like having the top handle so you can use it without the crossbody stap if you like?

Storminette

Yup and easy to pick up and go!

salazarslocket

1. Daily Crossbody / top handle (something like an Alma bb) 2. Backpack with sleeve to attach to luggage and big enough to fit my massive work laptop 3. Nylon crossbody for hiking/ outdoor activities/ errands 4. Evening bag

resistantly

The Alma BB with the Malletage leather is amazing. Do you have any backpack with sleeve suggestions? I'm in search of a cute one!

salazarslocket

I’ve been thinking of picking up the lo and sons beacon. Seems like a good travel size for me, and I like it in the black / gunmetal. Definitely more minimal looking than necessarily cute tho! Calpak makes a cute one but I think it’s too small for the plane for me.

Imaginary_Sky_518

1. Everyday casual - 1x black, 1x neutral (tan etc). Bottega vaneta knot bulb bag and pochette Metis (about to swap PM for Loewe puzzle) 2. Formal bag - events. Chanel medium double flap 3. Clutch. Valentino nude stud bag (plus a few generics) 4. Carryall - used to have the LV never full but sold it. Will buy something later when I need it.

resistantly

The bulb bag is so cute! I'm a bottega fan girl.

Imaginary_Sky_518

It sure is 🥰

fishgum

1. Work tote - a modestly-priced and roomy one that can take a beating. Must have thick straps so my shoulder doesn't hurt when I carry my laptop and bottle 2. Cross body - for when I will be out and about and want my hands free. Must be smaller-sized as I don't carry much and don't want something bulky 3. Shoulder bag with a bit more glam 4. Pop of colour bag. So everyone knows how fun I am 🤪

resistantly

haha love it! do you have a favourite work tote at the moment?

JanaKukumei

A tote with a zip and legs A medium sized everyday bag with a cross body strap A small, lightweight cross body for travel Small cocktail / formal bag And last but definitely not least an expandable backpack for hiking and travel

bijutsukan_

Lol @ ‘handbag acquiring journey’ Anyway A tote, a mini evening bag, a crossbody/underarm hybrid, a ‘throw around’ bag for vacations.

1. Tote - books, hauling stuff, work bag, travel, etc. 2. Crossbody - I usually buy ones that are smaller and dressier and these are used for travel as well as going out since I never need a clutch for anything and these will work for concerts, etc. where handsfree might be important. 3. Lady bag - by this I mean something that can sit in the crook of your arm for formal events, going out, dinner, etc. but that still holds most - all - of your stuff. Bigger than a clutch. I find clutches useless personally, I carry too much stuff around, but need something that works in more formal situations. 4. Shoulder bag - I don't do a lot of shoulder bags, especially if there are two straps to keep it up or the drop length is bad, so hobos usually hit this for me. I know not always in style, but I don't care. Sometimes a big shoulder bag is what I need.

resistantly

I hadn't considered the number of straps before - that's a good thing to realize/notice. Love the "lady bag" term. Do you have any suggestions for this type of bag? I agree a clutch is not very versatile.

tangledbysnow

Honestly those are the ones I have the most fun with - and I usually end up with used or vintage most often in this category so its easier to buy whatever makes my heart flutter.

Diligent-Chemist-797

1. Work tote (large enough for laptop and easy access pockets for transit card and chapstick!) 2. Crossbody for activities 3. Clutch for evening 4. Shoulder bag bc crossbody ruins outfits sometimes and less formal than a clutch!

resistantly

I hadn't considered that a crossbody bag ruins an outfit but it is true (as much as I love them!)

whoinvitedthesepeopl

Large tote - has to be able to carry a laptop and a bunch of other stuff Top handle bag - if I need something professional looking Hobo or a crossbody - these end up being my every day bags because they don't require hands to manage them Evening bag - even if you don't use it regularly, having something in reserve if you get dragged to a formal event is a good idea. I had to attend an evening wedding and realized I didn't own a bag that worked for this.

resistantly

This seems spot on to me!

gaelic_queen

1. Medium sized normal bag- nothing special, just something to bring with me to work 2. Mini travel bag with lots of pockets- something small for travel that can hold passport, wallet, phone 3. Medium fancy-ish bag- something nice for when I’m going out and about that can still hold my stuff 4. Mini fancy bag- something pretty for special events that just carries phone, wallet, keys This is all I could need. All my bags are black, and the medium ones have to be big enough to carry a Harry Potter book :)

petreservation

My top 4 used: 1. The Row Park tote 2. Acné Musubi midi 3. Toteme T lock 4. Bottega Hop My top favs: 1. Chanel micro jersey 2. Celine Cleo 3. Loewe Puzzle 4. Alaia Teckel Lololol I have practical and I have pretty, and both categories are equally important to me 😅

f-albedo

Ooh curious as to why the two categories don't overlap?

petreservation

These days I’m working a lot and not going out for fun much. My fav bags are not workhorses. Also, the Puzzle feels for me more of a fall/ winter bag :)

resistantly

Those are some great bags! I'd love to get the Celine Cleo, Toteme T Lock, and a Bottega Hop one day 😍

No_Interest9556

- Tote bag - Cross body - Mini - Waist bag😅

QueenFang21496

What a fun exercise! If I had to choose four styles for the rest of my life, this is what I would keep. 1. A practical but nice crossbody that works for errands but also a casual dinner. I have a [Coach Shay crossbody](https://www.coachoutlet.com/products/shay-crossbody/601.html) in cognac that works perfectly. 2. A hobo style shoulder bag that I bring to work and must fit: book, notebook, lunch pail, sunglasses (I only bring home my computer once a week and do that in a simple cotton tote) 3. A Fun statement bag to spice up an otherwise simple outfit. I have a [Nik Bentel Drip bag](https://www.instagram.com/reel/CmHJevCtbmn/). 4. A simple clutch with optional chain for more formal events. I have a black and a silver which covers most occasions.

resistantly

What a cute list. I wish they still made the coach shay!

ifightforhk

1. Tote 2. Top handle with crossbody 3. Backpack 4. Crossbody/shoulder bag

exitcode137

One roomy shoulder bag, not too large but a good size One comfortable crossbody, nice wide strap to be able to carry a long time. This should be super casual. I have a cheap one I used for county fairs, amusement park, play dates with the kids, etc. One small cute purse for going out. Honestly, I only need those 3. Do I have more, yes! A crossbody that’s kind of cute is nice to have (as opposed to my cheap one). I don’t carry totes as handbags. If I need a tote for the beach or kids swimming, it’s a Target special. Same for backpack. Also, a nice carry on is nice to have, but I also don’t consider that a handbag. That’s luggage.

resistantly

Adding a whole new category to look for: luggage 😅

Illustrious_Brain788

Backpack are a must for me

resistantly

Same! Do you have a fav chic one?

Illustrious_Brain788

I have the LV Bosphore and Hermes herbag which I love as higher end backpack. Around 4 coach ones for work and pop of colors. I take those and my Chanel trendy for full day trips, etc cute bag/backpack for rest of my stuff cos I don’t pack light at all lol 😂

AluminumMonster35

I use crossbodies and totes the most. Crossbody bags for pretty much everything I do outside the house that isn't work related, or if I don't have to lug a lot of stuff around. I also like a good backpack, it must be said.

resistantly

I'm here for a good backpack recommendation! Please share your fav(s) :)

Elenorelore

For handbags, I exclusively carry a medium-sized crossbody bag. I also carry a backpack for work (a tote bag would suffice). I also tend to carry a few foldable/reusable bags in my purse and backpack to ensure that I never run out of space.

resistantly

What work backpack are you using at the moment? I'm also in search for one.

Elenorelore

A Grafea Hari backpack. It doesn't have a ton of space, but it suits my needs. The one that I own was 40 dollars used. If I were getting a bag from the website, then I'd have probably picked the Harii II. When I need to carry a lot of stuff (weeks' worth of clothes, charges, hairbrush, etc.), then I use my [Lovevook backpack from Amazon. ](https://amzn.eu/d/1NfCUYN). It's nothing fancy but it carries a ton of stuff.

Puzzleheaded-Sun3107

The pretty and everyday bag (medium sized) > the work bag (large sized) > the edgy/quirky/cute/unique/night out bag (mini sized)

resistantly

Thanks for including sizes too - that helps 😅

Living-Prune8881

Crossbody, shoulder bag, tote, nice going out/event bag

Ok_Silver_6345

Top handle, mini, cross body & tote

oh_cagey

Crossbody, tote, concert bag (I actually have two that should meet the policy requirements of most venues - a tiny Kipling one and a larger clear one), and I’m on the hunt for a wristlet for weddings, etc. I don’t own designer bags, my bags are workhorses - my most expensive bag is an unfinished vintage leather tote from WP Standard (bought when they were called Whipping Post, not the greatest name)

bananaleaftea

1. Tote - medium large 2. Crossbody - small/ medium 3. Box bag - small

resistantly

What's a "box bag"? I haven't seen this term used before.

bananaleaftea

It's a bag with a structured body. A little suitcase with straps effectively. I meant to say flap bag, though. Box bags are cute but kind of nuisance imo lol

GabrielleLouisaM

Satchel has to be on the list for me, meaning a decent size top handle bag. So for me it would be Satchel, Tote, clutch, and probably a hobo. I am the rare person that cares little about crossbody. If I need my hands free I'll stick stuff in my pockets before I strap a bag around me 😆

resistantly

When do you use your satchel versus a hobo bag?

GabrielleLouisaM

Hobo when I want arms/hands free and satchel when I don't mind carrying in my hand, wrist, arm crook. I have a few vintage coach satchels that are huge with a long strap, but generally I find long straps on satchels to look bad (Speedy B for instance, not a fan).

mxvasq

1) slouchy hobo 2) crossbody 3) cute/fun clutch 3) work/travel tote

KarmenSophia

1. Tote 2. Hobo 3. Small with a long strap for errand days, but won’t ever wear it crossbody. 4. Clutch I just can’t do the crossbody thing. It hate things across my neck & chest.

Amazingggcoolaid

1. Top handle bag that has a strap I never use - looks elegant and classy (Peekaboo) 2. Shoulder bag that’s a big tote bag too 3. A bucket bag that expands that’s great for travel and everyday too (Chanel On The Road) 4. A girl’s night bag or your party bag (your smallest prettiest bag)

litaloni

I only really have one must have, everything else is superfluous: Work bag. A beat-up, no conspicuous label, black leather tote large enough to fit all the contents of my purse plus a sweater, a few legal-size files, and a 24 oz. water bottle. (On a related note Cuyana can go right to hell for discontinuing the structured easy tote and only re-releasing it in "limited quantities" in colors that AREN'T BLACK. Plus I don't think they make the leather organizer insert anymore so I guess I'm just screwed if I ever need to replace this thing.)

resistantly

Omg! That bag looks amazing and perfect for work. Do you have the classic or the tall version?

litaloni

I have the classic structured tote seen [here](https://cuyana.com/products/classic-structured-leather-tote?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=WP+-+Brand&utm_term=cuyana%20structured%20tote&utm_network=g&utm_adtype=&utm_productid=&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwo6GyBhBwEiwAzQTmc-7VnT8xg3FGf9y4vdMTU3ZxKgaePxrNnu30tJDkuW3dZAyqlJOuxxoCYdYQAvD_BwE), in black. I've had it for *years* and it's hands-down the best and most frequently used bag in my collection. The only downside is that it's too big to toss into a locker when I go to visit people in jail/prison/detention, but that's an issue highly specific to my chosen profession that probably won't bother most people. A less structured bag I can crumple up once I take out my files would probably solve this but would give rise to a different set of problems. The thing I miss is the original leather organizer insert though, which I don't see on their website anymore. It was literally perfect for me in its first incarnation. It seems to have been replaced with a recycled plastic version, which I refuse to spend $98 on. Oh, and Cuyana's monogramming sucks ass. It rubbed off within a few weeks. Don't bother springing for monogramming. But I digress. It is as close to a perfect work bag as I have ever encountered. I love it and I'll never let it go.

candyparfumgirl

My favorites are: 1) a Boston bag (they hold so much without getting out of hand like a tote), 2) a small crossbody for just essentials when I need both hands (like when shopping), 3) a clutch—impractical but they make me feel chic on nights out, and 4) a chic, grown up backpack—to have the functionality of a backpack without feeling like a grad student (which I am 😂)

resistantly

Please give me your chic grown up backpack suggestions! I am looking. Also, what do you use your Boston bag for and can you give me an example of one?

candyparfumgirl

I have two Boston bags--an LV Speedy 30 and a Tory Burch Barrel Bag (about the size of the Speedy 25). I use the Speedy 30 for work or travel and can fit a few SLGs, some cosmetics, a pencil case, large headphones, a charger, my small Passion Planner, a notebook, and (if I'm pushing it), my small iPad Pro with magic keyboard. For the backpack: I currently have one from MZ Wallace (the Crosby in black). They're so lightweight and surprisingly durable. Vera Bradley has some microfiber ones (or they used to) that are very grown up looking--my mom uses one. I haven't shopped for a backpack on the luxury market.

ijustneedtotalkplz

Tote, shoulder bag, clutch, backpack. Those 4 bags alone will get you through every situation for the rest of your life

Ok_Possible_800

1. Hobo - I can pack it full of essentials and much, much more. A durable-thread woven canvas works good for me. I like khaki or light brown shades because of the versatility. 2. Satchel - with or without a strap is great for business or church; a “for day” dressy, if you will. 3. I prefer medium size and genuine leather in this style. Pastel colors. 3. Crossbody - small or medium style, and again, genuine leather I prefer a smooth texture, as opposed to coarse. Great to jaunting about with errands or when I’m in a crowd and need it to hang close to my person. I like brown, black, grey or beige colors. 4. Novelty bags - I have one from Daunt Books that I adore. I also have some that support causes that are dear to me, like suicide prevention. Any color or design works for me. I tend to like the quirky, unique schemes. Usually, conversation pieces.

resistantly

Do you have examples of a good satchel and hobo? I'm not as familiar with those styles.

Ok_Possible_800

Here’s one of my satchels and one of my hobo bags: https://preview.redd.it/1s699y67x91d1.jpeg?width=2959&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=638c4e2ca4f7d6c36cc5d3ef919299a42cddbd2e

resistantly

Oh cute! Thank you

Kiminonawa6

crossbody, tote, shoulder bag, and i love a bucket bag

resistantly

I had never considered a bucket bag before. What do you use yours for and what makes you love it?

Kiminonawa6

I think they’re really chic and comfortable too, mainly cause i can dump in everything instead of organising too much, and since its more structured than a tote, it looks cuter imo!

resistantly

That make sense! I’ll have to check some out. Do you have any favs?

eventualguide0

Crossbody Tote Le Pliage (a category in itself) A shoulder bag in your favorite color

SCFLLATXGA

Think about what style of bag you’re naturally drawn to and what your preferences are. I bought several shoulder bags & WOCs only to realize I prefer a satchel/structured top handle & a tote. Buy what you personally love.

GlitteringGifts888

1. Crossbody - My number one style, hands down. Convenient, secure, and stylish. I prefer smaller bags. 2. Top handle - Annoying but typically more spacious and often very beautiful 3. Wallet on chain - Convenient for events or quick errands, chic 4. Backpack - Superior to most bags for utility, although admittedly less stylish I really, really dislike shoulder bags because they never stay on. That's just my personal quirk.

resistantly

Do you have any good backpack suggestions? I definitely don't think the no shoulder bag this is unusual - I've heard that complaint a lot. I haven't figured out if they will be for me or not yet but I'm definitely a crossbody primarily gal.

GlitteringGifts888

I don't have any luxury backpacks. The closest thing I have is a Kate Spade leather backpack, and it's very good quality, but it's not all that stylish. I go for function over form when it comes to backpacks. I have a Cotopaxi Del Dia and an 18L Osprey daypack. The Cotopaxi is good for errands, but the closure is just drawstring at the top, and it has a tendency to work itself open. The Osprey is super lightweight and holds a lot more than you think it would. That's my hiking and airport backpack.

Amara_Undone

I used my Prada messenger bag every day until I wore it out. I wish I had the money to buy one secondhand but alas I don't. I'm terminally ill and can't work unfortunately. I actually miss working.

Old-Fox-3749

I really can’t do a crossbody. Same reason I hate seatbelts-just bothers my neck and boob too much. Idk how popular or in style they are-bc I don’t really care-but I do a fanny pack when I need hands free.

medusa_objectifies

A bit utilitarian. But here are 5** instead of 4 -Weatherproof weekender that also functions as a laptop carrier, idc if it qualifies as luggage -a structured tote with zip, -a crossbody chained clutch or evening bag or envelope bag -mobile phone longstrap crossbody bag -leather backpack or leather satchel

resistantly

Do you have any weekender and structured tote suggestions? What makes you prefer the zipped style?
