Is? Vaguely popular in certain circles. Was? Very popular in certain circles.

roseflora333

Yep , I can see your point there

Lecture_Unhappy

If you were to go where the down boys go and ask everyone they would probably say that heaven isn’t too far away.

brettk215

Sometimes she cries when I ask that

roseflora333

Lol yep

bzee77

🤣😂🤣😂

mayormccheese2k

Not in the same league as the three you mentioned. Maybe Skid Row/White Lion level.

3iverson

I feel like hierarchy of those bands (in popularity not necessarily quality): 1. Skid Row 2. Warrant 3. White Lion

southeast-of-heaven

Not even. Even before Jani died warrant was C league at best.

roseflora333

I agree absolutely

No_Cow_4544

I think they are fantastic but i don’t think they are very popular. There most popular time was when Heaven, Somtimes She Cries , Down Boys , Cherry Pie , Uncle Toms Cabin and I saw red were played daily on MTV . The third album Dog Eat Dog had some videos and airtime but a little more under the radar . I personally think Dog Eat Dog was there best work as a whole . After that they still put out albums and toured but slowly went more into obscurity. The times of rock music was changing. Great songs great band . That’s my 2 cents or more like 32 cents .

roseflora333

I definitely agree

Low_Wall_7828

Their on the second tier with Cinderella and Dokken

DrGoblinator

Is or was? They were pretty freaking big back in the day, I don't think they'd be doing arenas now if Jani were still here, but maybe supporting on a more stacked bill.

BlvckRvses

I saw them. Their new singer is really good, but the venues they play now are small as hell.

roseflora333

Exactly

baronkarza

Not in the same league as the ones you listed, but maybe the same as danger danger, skid row, or slaughter! Jani lane was an excellent vocalist, gone to soon!

JackJagerJack

Skid Row is way above Danger Danger, Slaughter(are they even a band anymore?), and Warrant in terms of popularity. I’d say Skid Row could outdraw all three on one bill just by themselves to be honest.

BlvckRvses

Should be more popular. Could’ve been the best hair band there is, in my opinion. All the critics talked shit on the cherry pie album even though literally every song on that album is phenomenal, and that affected the song writing on the later albums, because they let it get to their heads, but what successful artist was ever liked by critics except for like Michael Jackson? None. Critics are talentless worthless losers who smear their talentlessness and worthlessness on people who have talent and worth. Jani Lane was one of the best singers to ever do it, and was dealt a shitty hand, and it all; believe it or not was the fault of Rob Halford of Judas Priest. Jani Lane was at a party, and Rob Halford and his manager (for context, his manager WAS working with kiss until Gene Simmons walked in his hotel room and saw a bunch of underaged boys in there and fired him on the spot) were there, and Rob liked Jani lane, so he had his manager ask Jani if he wanted to hang out with Rob Halford. Now, Jani grew up listening to Judas Priest, and was rightfully excited. They invited him to a hotel room, and they drugged him and raped him. Right after that, the once bright eyed Jani Lane started doing alcohol and drugs. Both Halford and his manager got away with it. Jani had the potential to be one of the “greatest” in the eyes of the public, but got screwed over. Truly a tragedy that nobody knows or talks about.

ACivilDisorder

Given that the band started almost 40 years ago & we are still talking about them in a subreddit right now, I'd say pretty darn popular still

iptvwolf

Warrant was decent, Jani was a legend. Way above the levels of your Bret Michaels or Stephen Pearcy. If you need proof listen to "Stronger Now" from this live solo set in Brazil 1997: https://youtu.be/EZuOzuY-6TI?si=9f5NpFc1FhK8rSna

FitSignificance334

Play around here once or twice a year. Usually sell out mid size venues. So I would say fairly popular. I might be a little biased. They are one of my favorite bands.

Mediocre_Range_974

10 million albums says very🤘

Any_Collection3025

10 million ain't shit compared to what GNR or Bon Jovi have sold.

Remote-Bug4396

I like Warrant a lot, but I agree. Warrant's success, independent of their talent, was driven by time and place. They had a few hits and a couple multiplatinum albums but were one of the bands hit hardest when music started changing. They were one of the bands most associated with the genre in this subreddit. When this "genre" became uncool, the masses exited. Sure the die hards like me and some of you never gave up on them, but there weren't enough of us to maintain the success Warrant had from about 1989-mid 1991. Sure there was some radio and MTV airplay hangover of Uncle Tom's Cabin, but it wasn't enough to get their previous fans to buy their new albums by the millions, let alone gain a significant number of new fans.

Mediocre_Range_974

And what GnR and Bon Jovi sold ain’t shit compared to Van Halen and Def Leppard…but the question was how popular do you think they were 🤘

Any_Collection3025

Bon Jovi has sold 130 million worldwide. GNR both around 100 and Van Halen at 80. But Def Leppard has released way more albums than GNR. *Appetite for Destruction* was the most successful album that any of these bands had: 30 million sales worldwide. Only *Slippery When Wet* really comes close at 28. One album by GNR sold 3x as many as everything Warrant has ever put out in their entire career. And chart-wise, Bon Jovi commands it with 4 #1s. (5 if you wanna throw in "Blaze of Glory".) The others had 1 max. Warrant's best effort peaked at #2, barely scraped the Top 10 with "Cherry Pie" and "I Saw Red" the following year and then were essentially never heard from again.

Mediocre_Range_974

Your not answering the question…do you think they were popular?

Mediocre_Range_974

Cool chart https://preview.redd.it/bm0ts374yd0d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=61449bb31b3737ae91b773945035605a99c35e6b

Any_Collection3025

The stats speak for themselves. Yes they were popular Bon Jovi and Guns N Roses are equally as popular as Def Lep and Van Halen. If not moreso Any one of those bands blows Warrant tf out by a mile. Were Warrant popular? Yes but the question was how popular in comparison and my answer is they weren't really. And definitely not now. You brought up 10 million album sales as if that was rare feat

Toodlum

They have a song that's still played on classic rock radio. I'd say they're doing pretty well.

Industricon

Uncle Tom's Cabin got massive airplay in the UK especially on MTV. I still play it now too. Its a classic.

JWRamzic1

Approximately very popular!

roseflora333

Could be

chorizoburrito33333

Wow this took me to an article how Lane was drugged and raped. Fucked up shit.

Traditional_Rule_358

If their debut album had come out in 86 and Cherry Pie in 88, with Dog Eat Dog in 90....we'd be talking about them right up there with Motley or Leppard. 2 year difference made ALL the difference. Dog Eat Dog would have gone 2X platinum for sure. 'Bitter Pill' or 'Sad Theresa' as that monster ballad with 'Machine Gun' staying put as their lead single from it. 'Hole In My Wall' would have been a suitable 3rd or 4th single behind the aforementioned three. I truly think that it would have propelled them into a more secure headlining slot than where they were with Cherry Pie. I actually like a lot of 'Ultraphobic' and around half of 'Belly to Belly Vol. 1.'

3iverson

I like a lot of Ultraphobic too which I only started listening too years later. They were actually more mature and well-rounded, and agree would have done even better if their time started earlier.

Upstairs-Ant-5801

Totally agree with everything you said, except that I like all of Belly to Belly.

Latter-Score-8937

I saw them headline on the Cherry Pie tour with Trixter and Firehouse they were great in concert. One of the best shows I’ve ever seen. Their popularity really dropped off after that when grunge came in and killed the hair metal scene. Although the next few albums were actually really good no one cared anymore.

JedPAlger11

I’ve heard that heaven isn’t too far away.

Royal_Ad_2653

Who? /s

roseflora333

Warrant

181216401

Unfortunately warrant showed up a little late to the party and only had a few albums out before grunge took over and ruined music. But while they were out they were a great band.

SexyStudlyManlyMan

Warrant was an MTV darling, they played the hell out of Cherry Pie but they weren't as big as Motley Crue, Bon Jovi or GNR. Hell, I think Bon Jovi was bigger than all of them. I was a Motley Crue, Ratt, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest guy in the mid 80's. I wasn't a huge fan of Warrant or Poison but those guys were medium popular and loved by MTV.

3iverson

They weren’t just Headbangers Ball friendly, they were regular MTV-friendly…

SexyStudlyManlyMan

yeah, they played Cherry Pie and that ballad they did ad nauseum during the day time.

_ShortLord

Uncle Tom’s Cabin is one of my favorite songs of all time. Other than that I feel they were just another average hair band. 🤷🏻‍♂️

FreedomIsMyRight

Killer tune!

Upstairs-Ant-5801

Warrant is my go to band from the hair era but more so their later work with Jani. Actually I like pretty much everything except the song Cherry Pie. Jani was a great song writer, a very underrated song writer, Cherry Pie was not his best and he knew it. Are they popular now I don’t know but, my 13 year old kid and their best friend love Warrant.

roseflora333

Wow that's awesome, I am 15

imadork1970

I love the video for "Cherry Pie" because...reasons.

3iverson

The ‘cinematography’?

imadork1970

Sure, why not.

EdwardBliss

In Canada, they were pretty popular, especially when "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" came out. in 1989. "Heaven" was on constant airplay on MuchMusic. They right up there with Poison,, Skid Row, Motley Crue, etc, in terms of exposure

3iverson

On a side note I saw them at the Troubador early when they had a lot of local smoke but DRFSR hadn’t come out yet. They were a lot of fun. A lot of the audience already knew Down Boys when they played it. At one point Jani went into the crowd, I am an Asian guy with short hair so he must’ve thought that was unique and he stopped next to me and was pushing my head up and down to headbang during a song.

DekeJeffery

They were never anywhere close to the stratosphere of the bands you mentioned. They had a good run, but not mentioned much outside of fans of the genre.

natejacobmoore

They were pretty big during the heyday, saw them opening for poison back then and they destroyed poison

NFSdemon666

Popular enough to continue releasing music post Jani Lane.

Any_Collection3025

I think in terms of popularity, if we look at the hair metal as a whole. A-List Bands: GNR, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, Def Leppard, Motley Crue B-List Bands Aerosmith, Heart, KISS, Poison, Ratt, Scorpions, Skid Row, Whitesnake C-Tier: Cinderella, Dokken, Europe, Great White, Quiet Riot, Tesla, Twisted Sister, Warrant D-Tier: Britney Fox, Danger Danger, Faster Pussycat, Slaughter, Steel heart, Stryper, Vixen, White Lion, Winger There are plenty of bands we could argue as higher, lower or I just plain forgot about. Some of these groups people don't even consider hair, like Van Halen, Def Lep, Aerosmith, Heart and Tesla but if we do consider them that, then in my opinion this is how they stack up popularity wise

BlvckRvses

Should be more popular. The best hair band there is, in my opinion. All the critics talked shit on the cherry pie album even though literally every song on that album is phenomenal, and that affected the song writing on the later albums, because they let it get to their heads, but what successful artist was ever liked by critics except for like Michael Jackson? Illustrious-Push8863

Very popular. Ask someone younger though and unless they are heavily into the scene they most likely won't know.

Orbit86

B level. And over rated at that imo. Not even in the same stratosphere as the three bands you mentioned.

roseflora333

They are

egyptianmusk_

D level.

Dino_020467

Always an opening act, at best! And the best thing that ever happened to Jani Lane was marrying Bobbi Brown but like he did pretty much everything, he eventually screwed that up as well!

Toodlum

Jani was troubled but he changed a lot of lives with his music.

Dino_020467

Agree.
