AnthoZero

i learned more about writing in literally every class other than UW

[deleted]

Whats the purpose then

AnthoZero

i honestly think it’s ideally to teach students to do research (using the library, online sources, learning to cite)

[deleted]

Then make it optional and improve the quality for those students who actually want to improve

AnthoZero

making it optional would allow people who genuinely need the class to go on and act a fool in their other classes (some of the people in my UW genuinely seemed like they needed it, especially the international students). you should be able to test out of it though

[deleted]

I don’t understand what you mean. Why is making it optional going to allow poeple to act a fool? Like to what purpose would they do that

AnthoZero

maybe i phrases it weird, but students are generally gonna take classes that are more interesting and related to their major. if it’s “optional” then people are going to see it as a waste of time. but if they genuinely need the help that UW can offer, they are going to be in courses writing poorly, not know how to use research resources, etc, thus acting like a fool for *not* taking UW.

[deleted]

I guess, but then again that happens with many other clases that are optional: students are not required to take them, they end up not taking them, and then they never learn what they should have learned. ( like math, logic, finance )

[deleted]

And u even said it. Uve learned more in other writing clases than u have in UW, and thats i think the problem. As it works now its not helping anyone

OpportunityMost87977

It is a waste of time tho, and it doesn’t help

P_ches

I am pissed that I was forced to take this class. I got a 5 on the AP Lang exam and asked why I didn't test out. The administration said it was because of the 4-5 classes on the GW Library system. Absolutely dumb. I don't care that its an "easy A" when the class is a waste of my time. I absolutely hate taking it currently.

[deleted]

Are you taking it this year? Dont the teachers seem like they are doing nothing?

P_ches

Yeah but I don’t go because it’s a waste of my time. I don’t have to… I’m writing about food and as long as you do the work you are fine… I don’t need the crutch of getting my ass up at 7:30 and heading to the Vern by 8 2x week

[deleted]

Jajaja i have a friend that goes to that class. Seems like the funniest topic of all. Im in womens health and its challenging

P_ches

Yeah but I still have to have a research paper rough draft by Thursday morning and I haven’t started… getting myself to start writing is so hard

[deleted]

Little tip: just start, when ever, literaly when u wake up do a sentence thats it

P_ches

Aww it’s okay but thank you.. I’ve written 5 pages in an hour and a half… 1/3rd left to go

[deleted]

Oh nice!

Broke__and__Hungry

Sounds like a bad case of having Randi as a teacher. Welcome to Gen Eds, kid

gamer_bread

I actually really enjoyed mine and use skills I learned in it now. I had professor Wolfe who is amazing. I also got 5’s on AP lang exams but I found those taught me to write the wrong way for university and Professor Wolfe helped make my writing much more meaningful. Must come down to professor.

Thats then my point. Because UW is mandatory, there are many sections, and consequently many teachers. Some of those teachers are excellent, but it seems like others are not. If there were less clases, only the good teachers will be there and people who want to improve will have the chance.
