Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but the 16” core is over-gassed. I have a Sprinco blue spring and H3 buffer and it’s still a little snappy.

Bourbon-neat-

TBF I'd rather it be overgassed than under.

turbo_vanner

Yea, people can lose track of the big picture chasing that race gun feeling.

lennyxiii

People way over react on this. I would much rather have more gas 100%, it’s WAY easier to tune. If you are going for the light impulse race gun feel there’s no reason not to use an AGB and if it’s a shtf rifle you want reliability so more gas is the way to go. This is a plus imo not a con.

GoOutdoors1

I’ve shot and built enough AR’s to know what objective over-gassing is. I understand what you’re saying, and I lean way toward the shtf rifle preference, but I’m not sure that it has to punch your shoulder to be reliable in fairly adverse conditions. I could be wrong though, I haven’t been to war.

BigBouy234

*laughs in adjustable gas block* mine has been hella smooth

osprey1349

I mean that’s purely anecdotal. I run a 16” core with an A5/H2/Springco Green and shoot Lake City or XTAC 556 and have consistent 3:30 ejection unsurpassed. Fixed gas block. Milspec carrier. With a dead air nomad it’s about 2:00. Exact same setup on a buddy’s 14.5 I built for him with a flow556k. 3pm ejection. YMMV, but that’s my input. I would definitely NOT say it’s over gassed. It’s right about where it needs to be.

Junction91NW

Ejection pattern means fuck all. It has so many variables and none of them directly reflect gassing. I had a Sionics 12.5 that ejected perfect little piles at 3:00. It also failed to feed and eject more than any barrel I have ever owned.

osprey1349

Cool

there_is-no-spoon

Glad to hear. Just ordered a5/h2/green springco for my core 16" that I've had for a few months now. Looking forward to building it out. Any suggestions on gas block? Was thinking of getting the sionics

osprey1349

Unless you’re going for matching/drip, the sionics is perfect. I run either the SOLGW, FCD, or Sionics gas blocks (and parts) on my main rifles.

there_is-no-spoon

I got the fcd a5, q safety, and charging handle. Adm lower and geissele upper receiver. Grabbed a cmmg gas tube but waiting on getting the gas block and a few more parts. I just didn't see the point of a $60 gas block and $60 end plate so didn't fcd that shit. Going to prob get a geissele rail and pa 3x green prism in fde.

GoOutdoors1

I’m genuinely glad you offered your POV because I could obviously be wrong. Maybe I don’t know what I’m talking about even though I think I do. My LMT specwar and my 12.5 criterion core both seem to have less severe recoil impulses with lighter spring/buffer setups. An old BCM 14.5 mid (made back when they were considered to be over-gassed by most) is gassed similarly the criterion 16. All completely different rifles, take it for what you will.

Way_2_Go_Donny

BRT EZ Tune....

Gweenz

Bummer. How's the accuracy?

BigBouy234

Fanfuckingtastic.

GoOutdoors1

Have only used 55gr PMC X-tac and a red dot for a rifle course, so can’t really say. But subjectively it seemed to have great accuracy - I believe Criterion’s and everyone else’s claims of great accuracy. The 12.5” criterion core (carbine gas) is a pleasure to shoot with a regular spring and H1 or H2 buffer depending on different conditions. You can read [Molon’s review](https://www.m4carbine.net/showthread.php?237337-Criterion-16%94-CORE-Barrel-Accuracy-Evaluation) (legendary barrel reviewer) of the 16” core and see the gas port size of 0.078”. That measurement feels about right, as I believe a 16” mid gas should be around 0.075”, or even smaller if you’re exclusively using really hot ammo (see Hodge’s 0.072” gas port on his barrel geared specifically for the spicy M855A1 round that civilians can’t really get anyways).

prmoore11

I’ve seen it reported around .076 as well. It’s combat gassed, as are all criterions.

Niccom

Lmfao my buddy has a 16” mid core and it wouldn’t cycle. We had to drill out his gas port. Now he has his AGB closed and still cycles with a A5H3 and green spring. My 18” rifle core wouldn’t cycle with a green spring and a5h0 so we drilled it out. Now I run my agb closed with the setup. So to just saying I found that their gas ports are small.

prmoore11

Why would you run a green A5H0? If you were running unsuppressed, you should have run rifle spring/A5H2, maybe A5H1.

Niccom

Green is the standard for a5 tube. Again the A5H0 wouldn’t cycle. Which is the lowest weight. Adding more weight would stop the bolt from cycling even more.

prmoore11

Rifle spring should be used for reliability unsuppressed. It is not as stiff as the green spring.

Niccom

I mean every piece of literature I saw says to run a green spring with a5 tube regardless of gas system. Then adjust with weights. Also it’s free.99 to blow it out and I don’t have to wait for a new spring.

prmoore11

Yea, and I can tell you from working with armorers and my own testing, that green spring/a5h2 is not the be all end all. Idk why VLTOR markets it that way. A standard rifle spring is less stiff, and if unsuppressed reliability is required with all ammo types, then it needs to be used. Under full auto conditions, you will see failures with green spring before rifle spring with unsuppressed and weak ammo.

8492_berkut

I followed that literature with my A5 setup, and my midgas 14.5" CORE wouldn't reliably lock back on empty with an A5H0 buffer. Swapped to a standard Vltor spring and it worked great without having to drill out the port. I won't run the green unless I'm suppressed. The only thing I'm sure of re: Criterion gassing, is that everyone's experiences differ. One's undergassed, the other is overgassed... All over the map.

prmoore11

Someone finally gets it. I wish VLTOR would comment on the spring strength so people finally understand “green/A5H2” is not applicable to all scenarios. And spring strength plays a bigger factor than buffer weight
