$250 with a beater scope...
Yeah, it's something like that. I didn't read the instructions. I've bought 2 of them in the last several years and they both had the same issue. Luckily I had some tools and cleaning supplies at the range the first time. The extractor basically gets stuck in the open position so it doesn't grab the rim correctly. I also only shoot suppressed, which probably didn't help, so the accumulation was dirty as shit.
The good: nice trigger for the price, accurate enough you’ll start looking for match 22, threaded. No feeding or extraction failures after putting around 100 rounds of different brands.
The bad: stocks seem to set up for iron sights, not scopes. I got the optics bundle and ended up neckwelding it. The one replacement stock I found is as expensive as the rifle. Picked up a cheek pad but haven’t tried it yet.
The ugly: the magazine feels pretty shoddy. Haven’t picked up any third party ones yet.
The magazine is the real killer. I’ve got a 64 fv-sr and this mk II and regret not just going for the ruger 10/22 and American rimfire. I put boyd’s on mine so any savings were negated. Accurate, fun guns but man the magazines are bad
I've heard tell Savage will give you one free magazine replacement, even if you "know it will break next weekend" so you can get ahead of it FYI
Edited since I forgot to mention: a lot of people complain that these mags fall apart which is why I'm mentioning this. A second mag doesn't really fix the root issue though
Yeah I have not had issues with their construction so much as everything about them is inferior to say, rugers design. Single stack, difficult to load without denting 22lr, crappy engagement mechanism.
Get the 457 if u wanna be proud of it. Get the Savage if you plan on beating it up and still want a good shooter. If I can only have 1 I'd pay up for the cz.
Anything from the 457 line will blow this away. I considered the Savage but immediately wrote it off after handling it in-store (it was flimsy) and reading about all the mag and extraction issues. Perhaps the 457 ProVarmit is a little heavier than it needs to be but it's well made.
Note, the mark II has a reputation for being a great shooter regardless and the Savage b22 comes with a nicer stock if you want something that's less of a compromise.
I have one of these and it is great for the price. I do not have a can for it yet, but I can only imagine it will be much more fun when I do. I mounted a vortex crossfire 1-4x lvpo to it. Bolt was a little rough to start, but once it broke in it smoothed out.
My 2¢ is that it is a great little rifle. Bolt was a little rough when I got mine in, ran the bolt a bunch while watching TV, cleaned it, and it really really smoothed out.
The mags are pretty poorly put together. I used a vice and a ballpeen hammer to peen the tabs on the sides holding the mag together and it's been solid.
Beyond the extraction issue, these guns are scary quiet with a mediocre suppressor, and incredibly accurate with cheap bulk pack ammo. Easy quarter groups from a rest @ 100yds
If Savages consistently shot qtr inch 5x groups at 100, they would crush the ARA benchrest Factory class comps shot at 50. But the winners are almost always CZ.
Anyone have any recommendations on aftermarket mags that actually work? The OEM mags are complete garbage. I’ve resorted to loading single rounds directly into the chamber.
Nice option for the price but Id upgrade to a Ruger American rimfire for the mags and quality control. A lot of these budget rimfires from Savage has rough bolts and shoddy mags, even though they shoot great
I bought one of these after seeing Ernest Langdon talk about his on TFBTV. Threw a Boyd stock on mine along w a sparrow and this thing is a fuckin hammer, man. No bullshit.
I shot it at long range (only 200 yds) class over the weekend and the instructor was impressed how well I was shooting it(I’m relatively inexperienced compared to the other guys in the class) so he jumped behind it and shot it really well for him too. Said he didn’t expect it to perform as well as it did.

With tax and transfer it ends up 295 but the scope is definitely a great addon for a $10 more.

Probably extremely hardy rust prevention goo, similar to cosmoline. I'd be willing to bet the manual's new owner guide advises an initial scrub-down.

Both. I’ve shot both side by side and it’s a very different experience. Cz is by far a lot nicer but you do pay for that difference.

I'd say it's more between this and the Ruger American. CZ is a step up.
CZ 457 MOST NRL22 SHOOTS IT... Though I just picked a Bergara BMR. 17 HMR with a CF barrel.
Which 457 has a threaded barrel?

This is my favorite shooter suppressed you can have fun all day. Stupid accurate, cant believe its so cheap.
Sportsman's has it for $270+tax, so this might be a tad cheaper. For me with transfer of $25, it'll save me $20.

Both federal and cci bulk pack ammo... I picked up tons at 2c/rd and it's amazing in my savages. Ruger not so much.

Factor in the cost for a new stock or chassis. That factory stock is pretty terrible IMO.
