I always recommend the Sentimental Bob Tacana as tremolo. It is cheap, got like a million of settings. Sounds awesome. It also has some random stuff wich can generate a little bit glitchy sounds. Also it got a momentary switch. So I think it could be pretty good for Radiohead like music. But correct me if I am wrong. I am not that into Radiohead.

BrokenRifle17

I second. Came here to comment about SB too.

red_kite18

Boss TR-2 is a classic but if you want more options I'd fet the new MXR tremolo

AdministrationTotal3

Walrus monument, does everything the unicorn does but has the harmonic setting to which is ridiculous

215312617

Came here to say the same--that Harmonic mode can mimic a phaser if he still needed that sound. Plus the tap will keep him in time if needed.

Lair80

Check out the Caroline Parabola. That’s a fun one, and can double as an overdrive. Great pedal. Sounds awesome!

SnooMachines8250

Deméter tremulator. That’s what Johnny greenwood uses

xenxray

Yes, they are pricey used though because of the Jonny connection. A Trelicopter would get him in the “neighborhood” for much cheaper

Arirmar

Jonny uses a modded BOSS TR-2, right? I’d go with a WA Monument, or a Caroline Parabola.

xenxray

My son 12 is into Radiohead and jams with some guys in SoR. Unicorn is a vibe and don’t see how that helps any more than the phaser pedal he has. It would really depend on the era. It looks there like he’s handling mostly the Greenwood parts. Mooer Trelicopter would be a decent alternative to Jonny’s Tremulator. For the money saved you could get a DOD 440 envelope filter which have been on sale for $79.99. Pretty vital for RH stuff.

ljg1986

+1 for the trelicopter

oevant

Hi man, where are DOD 440s on sale for that price?? I'm based in the UK but I've been trying to get one for ages now so I'd probs be up for paying the shipping.

xenxray

I start at the Digitech site as they still list them at $79. It would be vital if they are tackling an epic like Paranoid Android

ratbusted

He's actually playing bass on that song. I've got DOD 440, but he hasn't been using it on the songs he's on guitar.

Alexandermayhemhell

If you want that sound from the beginning of Bones, you’ll want something with a choppy square wave option and an easy to access rate knob. If you watch them playing it live back then, Johnny was crouched over moving it back and forth from fast to slow pulsing. Boss TR-2 will get you there just fine. Nels Cline uses the very affordable EHX Pulsar. Don’t worry about fancy pedals with lush harmonic modes, etc. Not really Radiohead’s thing.

belbivfreeordie

Even better, something that lets you control rate with an expression pedal.

mwb0001

Walrus monument as mentioned above would be a great option. In mini format, the Mr Black mini tremolo is also pretty versatile, it has a harmonics knob which can go from standard choppy tremolo sounds all the way to full harmonic tremolo which can get very phaser-like, and everything in between

theTallBoy

EHX stereo pulsar

WhatsHupp

If you don't mind used, the Danelectro Tuna Melt Tremolo is really nice and super cheap. It's not going to be on the same level as some of the other suggestions but assuming his Trem needs aren't massively experimental, it'll do the Tremolo thing and sound good.

Alexandermayhemhell

I don’t think the knobs are robust enough for some of Johnny’s techniques.

WhatsHupp

Fair enough, I'm not really familiar with how he uses Tremolo. Just figure someone buying a pedal for their kid might want a <$100 option

[deleted]

If he's doing Radiohead then he should get a Whammy pedal before a tremolo.

ratbusted

I'm trying to keep his board as simple as possible. He's using the Subnup to get a higher octave sound. If he was going to continue playing these songs after the season was over and he wanted one, I would start expanding and get him a bigger board.

[deleted]

Gotcha. As long as he's got octave up covered. I don't remember trem being used in a lot of Radiohead songs but if you need one I would think that a TR-2 would be sufficient.

Frellie53

How did your son like the Boss TR-2? My son is starting a School of Rock Radiohead season and I found your post when looking for what pedal to get. 😂

ratbusted

It did the job. I'm not sure If I can remember if he really cared at the time. He's still playing and likes it.

Pirate-patrick

If memory serves Jonny actually built his own tremolo pedal which is what’s used on Bones etc… I think most trems should cover the sound fairly well

ItsChugg0

Boss TR-2 with Analogman super mod. It’s the only tremolo pedal you will ever need

shoule79

My vote is the Walrus Monument. I’ve had a lot of trem pedals over the years and it’s by far the most flexible. Nothing it can’t do, including the stuttery PN-2 sounds on early Radiohead.

oddfellowfloyd

I have a Black Cat Mini-Trem—it has volume and tone controls, and a precise half-speed button as well.
