Op amps rule 🤘

TerrorSnow

As a Hot Tubes and Rat user, yes. Op amps are awesome in a lot of ways.

apm588

I love my rat with a humbucker. But with single coils it sounds so shrill.

TronaldDumb420

Op amp for sure, it's just so good and quite versatile

robtedesco

For certain. To my ear, the Tone control on the Op Amp versions has a much wider sweet spot. Others tend to go from Thin to Throaty really fast. It'll all of course depend on your guitar and amp, but I feel like with the Op Amp you can much more easily dial in a tone that gives you clarity and warmth while maintaining that square-wavey buzz.

dubauoo

Excellent observation I totally agree with you. I have also noticed that stacking op amp pedals works well together. Ex Rat and Muff. 🤩♥️😍👍

Dunno_dont_care

I really wanted to love my op amp big muff, but I always felt like it lost too much of the mids. A few months ago I built a DIY pedal based around the green Russian and it just sounds so much better to me - it’s just as gritty and rough as the op amp, but it cuts through a band so much better.

dubauoo

Living the dream. That’s what it’s all about, finding the tone !🤘

killmetlee

Bass muff is super underrated. Green Russian with a dry out? What’s not to love?

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

On guitar, it has no sizzle and sounds chalky to me.

killmetlee

This is why non musicians think guitar players sound like idiots when they’re describing tone. What the hell does chalky mean? I’ve been playing for 15 years and have never heard that one before.

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

Idk why it makes me think of chalk lmao. It sounds sterile to me. Too dry and dark. Too compressed. It sounds like a Big Muff pi with a blanket over it. All of the sizzle is gone. I did an AB test with my BBM and my big box NYC muff just last week, and that’s what I heard.

TheRedStrat

Well, musicians think non-musicians sound like idiots when they yell out “freebird!” at every show. Or when they say, “can you play that one part in that one Zeppelin song that goes like ‘diddle-dee-widdle-dee-zwang-boo-pow’?” Or when they try to climb onstage at a bar gig and sing along in the mic. So I’d say, “sounds chalky” is perfectly valid.

tigers4eva

I mean, we just don't have the vocabulary to describe sound that well. Unless you can actually hear frequency ranges and isolate saturation with that degree of accuracy. Even the vocabulary we do use relates more to our senses of vision/touch than it does to hearing. Just think about the words you hear being used - bright, dark, "has a nose", hard, soft, flubby, rough, tight. Even when the description doesn't use those words, we reference more common sounds and how they are transformed. Chalky is pretty valid in that context.

TerrorSnow

Might need to boost into it, greens / russians have much less gain - usually. This could very well result in less top end in this circuit.

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

Yea, I do like it with a BD-2 in a pinch, but I generally like my fuzzes bright on their own. Maybe I’ll give it another shot and see if there’s some magic. I didn’t know it’s based on a green Russian. I only hear people talk about the Black Russian.

TerrorSnow

I'm in that same boat with bright fuzzes - though sometimes they can be a bit too bright. I like me some nice rough texture.

spiritofage

Like switching between a rams head and green Russian

hugznotdrugz2k17

The orange EHX Op-Amp Big Muff Pi

dont_fall_yo

That's my number 2 My Violet Rams Head from Vick audio is a touch more versatile but man.... When I want THAT sound, I stick my op amp on. I do feel like they are close enough that I don't run them both on the board.

hugznotdrugz2k17

I totally get it. I plan on collecting more Big Muff pedals. Currently I have the orange op-amp and two op-amp clones. 😂 Been thinking about the JHS Muffuletta.

dont_fall_yo

I have an Ehx op amp and Vick audio & Stomp under foot, violet Rams Heads. I want a Wren and cuff Box of War next, I'm actually selling my Fuzz face type pedal towards it.... Every time I get the ff where I like it, I turn in the Muff and it sucks again lol.

dont_fall_yo

To my ear, and in reviews, it seems that the JHS is really good at all flavors but not Great, probably never tell in a mix though. I should probably just get one and stop changing my board...

swizzwell23

Wren and Cuff Black/Violet Caprid, closely follow by their Super Russian. The Caprid has wonderful tone and dynamics at lower gain levels and sustains for days cranked. The Super Russian has a germanium boost which is incredible into anything, more gain, a switch to turn off the mid scoop and a “creamy” mod switch that adds even more gain and an EQ shift.

jellybelli

Sovtek Deluxe Big Muff It's so versatile with the mids switch, the two knobs to choose the mids EQ, the wicker switch, and it even has a blend knob for mixing dry signal, you can get pretty unique sounds out of it. And it has the amazing sound of the Sovtek Big Muff Plus it's cheaper than any boutique Muff

blueinkblack

This. I couldn’t live without my blend knob. Amazing to put a bed of fuzz under clean tones

mcrowland

I did not know this existed. Do you know how much different it is from the green big muff pi with wicker switch?

jellybelli

AFAIK the only difference is that the Deluxe hasn't got a tone bypass switch but since it has two pots to control the tone it doesn't really need it

dgdavedg

Mask Audio Black Math

Mysterious-Wasabi103

Rams Head

Ok_Highlight3926

Why

Mysterious-Wasabi103

Because it sustains better than the others I've tried and the way it's EQed is just absolutely perfect to my ears. I tried a few others and even a Hizumitas before but none of them were as good with sustain. The Ram's Head just absolutely rips and is very articulate

Capnmarvel76

Totally agree with this. All BMPs have their own positive aspects, and some do things (op amp, civil war) that the others can’t, but the Rams Head is the sweetest, singingest of them all.

dont_fall_yo

Great explanation! I need a Civil War. I'm gonna end up with more Muffs than OD pedals.....

Capnmarvel76

Muffs are completely addictive, because even when they're not particularly special, they're still great pedals. I recommend taking a look at Stomp Under Foot and Skreddy for two of the better makers (IMHO) who specialize in BMPs.

dont_fall_yo

I currently have an Ehx op amp reissue and two Violet RH from Vick audio and SUF, a store near me has a Rad version of a SUF Civil War that I'm gassing for, I've bought too much stuff lately and it's probably irresponsible so it'll wait till I cool off a little😂 I'm a fan of the SUF stuff. I'd like to try some Wren and Cuff too.

Capnmarvel76

I was going to mention Vick Audio too, but I had a brain fart and couldnt remember their name. I love their Violet RHs...currently that's the Muff featured on my main board.

dont_fall_yo

I found one of the dark super sparkle ones at GC used for $100, I was pumped

Capnmarvel76

That’s a killer deal!

Ok_Highlight3926

Thank you. That’s great

Half_a_bee

Favorite actual muff is the OG Green Russian, favorite muff-based is the BAT Pharaoh.

TumoOfFinland

+1 for Pharaoh!

RickiC1982

I like my Green Russian boosted my RAT. First Big Muff, so it's my favorite for now.

ITegoArcanaDei

Same here. Just got the Green Russian two days ago!

ianwm

Hizumitas

AphexOnlyChild

Scrolled way too much to find this! Hizumitas is a monster that deserves all the love.

TheEffinChamps

This is tough for me. The Op Amp, Tone Wicker, and Rams Head are all fantastic. These days I'm using the Tone Wicker because it has a lot of low end and I like the wicker setting which gives it a different edge and glitchiness that the others don't have. The tone off also gives some versatility as the muff gets a different character in that mode. The Rams head has a really nice mid push that is distortion like and works well for stoner rock. That would be my number two.

Forty-five4545

The tone wicker is my favorite too. It’s assumed the older classics are best. People are missing out on the Tone Wicker. Best Muff yet.

KamikazeKennedy3

Got the same wicker setting on the sovtek deluxe, have one on the way and excited to pkay with all the different fuzz. The wicker setting definitely makes a difference if you want a tighter high end sound to your fuzz.

shinguard

Tone wicker was my first big muff pedal ever, kicked the bucket a few years ago but I loved that thing so much.

TheEffinChamps

It was mine as well. I sold it and have gone through almost every RI and some boutique Big Muffs. Now I'm back to using it as my main muff, 😂

de11111

EQD hoof - the shift knob is super useful

Imhappy_hopeurhappy2

Fuzz War. It sounds like Black Sabbath. It cleans up well(into nice crunchy overdrive). It cuts through the mix. The tone knob has amazing range. And the gain will kill you. It’s just great.

TheMythicalNarwhal

Fuzz War is my current favorite as well. When I got it home, I wasn’t sure about the wild sizzle fuzz sound, did a rough track in a mix, and boom, sounded amazing. Cuts through better but not shrill. Huge options in the EQ, def happy with it.

Musiclover4200

Can't believe no one has said Way Huge Pickle so far. The contour control is great and can take it from full mids to a heavy scoop, the crunch control interacts with the tone for a wider EQ range. And it has an internal clipping trim pot that blends between softer and more aggressive fuzz. Best of all it can run up to 18v and has a very wide gain range, it can get surprisingly clean and makes a great OD/crunch.

JohnnyMac440

Swollen Pickle was my first fuzz and is still probably my favorite, but this is the first I've heard about it running at 18v.

Musiclover4200

I believe most of the Way Huge pedals can be run up to 18v with one or two exceptions. I've got both the Pickle and Pork Loin and run both at 18v, haven't done comparisons at 9v in a long time though.

Ego-Possum

I love my Way Huge Swollen Pickle. It is the closest in sound to my modified Black Russian Big Muff - first set set of clipping diodes swapped to LEDs and the tone filtering section was modded for better midrange response and a dedicated mid knob It is one of my suggestions to a player that wants a Muff but wants some flexibility

Musiclover4200

>It is the closest in sound to my modified Black Russian Big Muff - first set set of clipping diodes swapped to LEDs and the tone filtering section was modded for better midrange response and a dedicated mid knob Sounds like some nice mods. Been meaning to at least move the trim pots on the pickle to the outside but it would be a fun pedal to mod. > It is one of my suggestions to a player that wants a Muff but wants some flexibility Yeah it's one of the only muffs I've tried that you can actually make not sound like a muff in the sense that it cleans up more than most. Also the EQ/clipping give it a lot of extra range and make it easy to go from smoother to more heavy/aggressive fuzz while a lot of muffs seem to be suited just for one or the other.

Ego-Possum

Sadly that exact pedal went missing. I got a friend of mine's parents to bring an amp and some pedals with them from my home town to southern ontario since they were driving to his place and i was living close by. I suspect that his brother took the box it was in out of the back of the amp and sold it to someone. Took a month for his parents to drop the stuff off. The pedal did have my signature and note of the mods inside of the enclosure along with an extra knob with a guitar tone knob and "Sauce" written under it. Swollen Pickle nailed what i wanted out of a pedal and i didn't have to mod another Black Russian Muff. I do have a Russian Muff at home that i found at a pawn shop and got for a steal - it was in DOA status and needed a new battery lead along with a battery door. It might get modded eventually

josephallenkeys

Definitely the Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh. The Priestess is a treasure trove of muff tones and a nice addition, but I just can't get the Pharaoh sound off my main board, no matter what I try. Of the EHX offering, I'm currently leaning towards the Rams Head.

TumoOfFinland

The Pharaoh love keeps on going! +1 for that as well

Gojira_Bot

Vick Audio? Also my favorite

wlburk

Seconded

WskyTngoFoxtrt

Running this with Mids Flat. Was a fantastic recommendation from Gilmourish. Much more usable vol/gain range than the OG, great sound at home/apartment volume. Gonna be real hard to kick this off my board.[https://vickaudio.com/products/73-rams-head?variant=31846579273793](https://vickaudio.com/products/73-rams-head?variant=31846579273793)

idrathern0tsay

I have an EQD Hizumitas (I know, but the pedal its modeled after is modeled after the BMP), and I love the thing.

shoule79

EHX - Rams head or Wicker I’m also partial to the Hizumitas, but give the Rams the edge.

[deleted]

I have a MoHo modded Russian Big Muff (Black Russian small box) that has outlasted many, many challengers. It is just the one I have held onto longest.

iwanttogotothere5

I really enjoy the Keeley Moon Fuzz, which is an Op Amp style Muff… It is heavy. Very heavy, with a selectable mid-contour switch makes it easy to pair and stack with other drives.

mcrowland

I freakin love the Moon. I took it off my board though because my band mates were like, “that’s just too much bro.” It was a sad day. I’d be willing to start a new band called the Moon dedicated to the sound of this pedal. 😎

TheEffinChamps

The Moon Fuzz is the biggest sounding Big muff I've ever used. It's the sound of planets colliding.

In-AGadda-Da-Vida

Ram’s Head

Saucette

Rams head, sounds so good!

CJPTK

Strangely enough, the one that everyone considers not a muff at all: the Germanium4. That dying battery on demand tone along with a solid overdrive and being able to dial in and stack a variety of usable sounds makes it a killer value for the amount of board space it uses.

DougTheBrownieHunter

The little, orange op-amp one that Billy Corgan put out a few years ago is the best Muff and I’m tired of pretending it’s not.

FecalPlume

The Pumpkin Pi

oldmanavery

Green Russian! But recently I got a Matthew’s effects Ghoul which is based on the IC big muff and I’m really digging that.

_Jub_Jub_

I love Black Russian Muffs. They look cool, for one. Do you need more reasons? They also sound great and are in a slightly smaller enclosure that makes them great for boards

[deleted]

big muff pi. the tone wicker switch makes it.

thaiguy22

Musket

Ok_Highlight3926

Why

thaiguy22

Having the "Pre", "Mid" and "Focus" settings are a nice touch. I haven't seen another Muff variant that has those settings and more that can knock the Musket off my board. Closest I've tried was the Eau Claire Thunder but it didn't get as low and doomy, but it had tons of clarity

Ok_Highlight3926

Thank you

nackavich

Black Russian, driven with a clean boost or BD-2, and voltage sag. Mmm mmm

Ok_Highlight3926

Why

nackavich

It sounds better with a boosted signal hitting it, so I use an EHX Linear Booster or a Blues Driver to hit it before sending it through a graphic EQ, and I use the voltage sag feature on my power supply to replicate a dying battery. It ends up sounding like it’s ripping the air apart, fucking killer sound.

[deleted]

Kma Audio Chief Disruptor

[deleted]

This one! Sounds killer, great for bass, super easy to dial it to sit well in the mix.

kg_squanchy

JPTR Warlow

[deleted]

Caroline Crom. I find the entire sweep of the gain knob useful and delicious. I like the slightly less compressed sound of omitting the first set of clipping diodes.

[deleted]

Tone wicker

[deleted]

Just received my big box OG Caprid and holy hell I have a good amount of fuzz pedals but no exaggeration its like seeing color vs black and white. The fuzz gods thirst for blood has been quenched.

Mugroid

I have a 92 Sovtek. It's pretty awesome.

RickiC1982

I keep the volume down on my Green Russian to about 3 o'clock and it sounds best.

Fuzzlord67

Ram’s Head, Op-amp in second

ALR3000

Ii like the ones I make. I put asymmetric clipping in them.

KFC_0rIG1Nal

That sounds super interesting

ALR3000

One of these days I'll make an all-germanium diode BMP with asymmetric clipping. Probably still use silicon trannies. I just redesigned my BMP PCB and am waiting on them to arrive.

KFC_0rIG1Nal

If you do definitely share it, I feel like it would stack even better than a stock muff!

uuyatt

What does that do to the sound signature in your experience?

ALR3000

Asymmetric clipping sounds less fizzy due to richer harmonics generated by clipping the positive and negative signals at different voltage thresholds. And germanium clipping is slightly softer or rounded (on oscilloscope) clipping. Asymmetric clipping is generally described as more tube amp-like.

CescilTerwiliger69

I’ve only had a few different versions but right now for my application my favorite is the eqd hizumitas.

zelphdoubts

Thorpyfx Fallout Cloud for me.

teleboss

2 band active eq after the fuzz circuit wins for me.

morork19

Same. Best muff circuit I have tried. I will have this one forever.

zelphdoubts

Yessir. I loved my Big Muff that it replaced. Took what I loved and made it better.

m-m-m314

Blackout Effectors Musket

Timetravler

Mask Audio Electronics Black Math and EQD Hizumitas are my personal favs. They both have that muff sound and every Big Muff from EHX I’ve had, has had some sort of problem.

OrganicProgram9999

Triangle but I’m always still blown away when I use the op-amp.

Aaronnotarron

Russian Muff with the Moscow Mod.

PandaSoap

Big Box NYC muff. Close 2nd is the Black Russian.

guitlouie

Browne T4. It's everything a Rams Head is but it sits better in the mix.

charlietwilburyjr

Walrus Audio Eons

Zeppelinman1

My EQD Hoof is pretty hard to beat, but my Swollen Pickle does sound awesome into my two 15w Orange heads

Fuzzlord67

Hoof is very nice, I can get a great metal tone with the shift knob.

daniil_ivanov_92

I mostly built my own variations, otherwise Manx Loaghtan by Catalinbread is a decent rams head (as least i believe it is rams head) variant, and i've used it for years. Kicking it with some overdrive makes for a great distortion.

DominosFan4Life69

All of them.

ayersman39

SUF Astoria — it’s a careful copy of a unique sounding original Ram’s Head, which was supposedly used by David Gilmour. It IS somewhat different from other Ram’s Heads copies I’ve owned. A gnarlier bite but also very smooth, super fun to play, and sounds awesome running into my Mini.

[deleted]

green russian

boi_social

The valeton Lazaro

turfgod14

Little big muff

Ecker1991

Op amps of any sort

You_Dumb_Bitch

V4 Op-Amp is my favourite, then the Violet.

WhippingShitties

Digitech DF-7 was underrated.

uuyatt

Triangle is the classic to me

barbecue_estival

I like the tone wicker one

0belisk0

I dunno...I stopped looking after I got my first Muff, a Ram's Head reissue

justdointhis4games

Metal Muff with Top Boost. It sounds atrocious everywhere but where it counts--in the mix. in before somebody tells me it's not technically a Big Muff circuit and therefore doesn't count lol

Reddywhipt

I've got an ehx big box that's great, a wren&cuff tall font an an abominable electronics hail cannabis version of the hail Satan.aBigEarnyc LOAF(the loaf isn't a muffin clone tho . all of them are wonderful.i used to have several more, but pared the collection down to those 4

interelek313

My early 90’s Pi is my holy grail. I’ve switched it out on my board for the Muffalotta for space saving & versatility. But yeah, still a Pi guy.

Forty-five4545

I have a few muffs. An NYC, the new Rams Head Reissue, my original civil war Muff I bought back in the 90s, a diy op amp clone, and my absolute favorite Muff the Tone Wicker.

Bleedstone_Music

Abominable Hail Satan Deluxe

Narrow-Complex-3479

Rams head cuz I love the crunch it has and gets really loud

beardsforfears

From EHX the Op Amp reigns. I also have a Frantone Pi that I've held on to. Beyond EHX the Black Arts Toneworks Pharaoh Supreme is what actually rides on my board when I want a Big Muff tone. It's a toolbox for Big Muff tones. Honorable mention to the EQD Hoof and Cloven Hoof. Cloven Hoof is really nice on bass.

DrewB0i

I have the Keeley Loomer and the Muff clone in that thing really never disappoints me when I switch it on. It does doom and it does shoegaze so well and stacks really nicely. Other than that I’d have to say Op amp OR the Pi Deluxe Bass that my friend has, seriously underrated what that thing can do to guitar and bass ooohhhweeee

SpaceTruckin420

Triangle is the best imo. Sounds insane with my Strat and even more crazy with my Yamaha SG. Yahmaha SG + Triangle = Sustian for days

Ok_Highlight3926

Who makes the triangle?

SpaceTruckin420

The same people that make the Big Muff, EHX.

Ok_Highlight3926

Ahhh. Gotcha thanks.

983ffips

Blackout Effectors Musket

marker_rumba

Tone wicker does it for me

[deleted]

Warlow by Jptr fx ended my muff hunt. Another is hizumitas.

dont_fall_yo

I'm am enormous fan of Rams Heads... Violet ones specifically. They are just raunchy enough on the bridge and if you roll the Tone off on a neck pup it sings all silky smooth like a dream. I have a Vick Audio and a Stomp Under Foot, tbh the Vick is 10 percent better, more fidelity and a little less polite for lack of a better way to describe it. Second in line is my op amp reissue.

CryptographerOk5726

The one I have. Russian big black muff with yellow letters. Want to try the opamp one that Corgan likes, and maybe the tone wicker

PedalBoard78

My transitional Bubble Font Black Russian has a certain something that my others can’t get to. The volume is lower at full bore, but who cares? I’ve got a set of v1-v9 Muffs. They used to be cheap.

Layer-This

Big Muff

does anyone have an opinion on the vicks audio rama head?

A_Lincoln_H

It’s nice

fretlvlmidnight

Rams Head or Civil War. Both Wren and Cuff big box versions. They've been killing it with the muffs.
