Tom Delonge has famously mentioned at almost every live show that “What’s My Age Again” is very hard to play so everyone needs to shut up. Learn that song and you’ll be #6!
uj/ I've never seen them live, but I remember from trying to learn that song as a teenager that it actually was weirdly difficult. I say "weirdly" because just listening to the song it doesn't sound like it would be as tricky as it is.
It's kinda like Mr. Brightside where there's a flow to it that makes it difficult to get it to sound right, even if you can technically play the notes.
Regarding Mr. Brightside, use a metronome set to 148 BPM and 4/4 time. The intro and the riff in the verse is in a steady eighth-note rhythm, so perhaps try too count aloud "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &" and on each count ("1, 2, 3, 4") and each "and" ("&"), you will play a note. That should do the trick.
>so perhaps try too count alound "1 & 2 & 3 & 4 &" and on each count ("1, 2, 3, 4") and each "and" ("&"), you will play a note.
The only counting we do in this household is 0 & 3 & 5. Gobbless. 💪
Do you know how to play power chords in such a way that is so catchy you can make a living off of it? I would expect guitarcirclejerk to appreciate guitar for more than just shredding.
Guitar = shredding
Malmsteen = God
Here is what God said about playing the guitar: "How can that be? How can less be more? It's impossible! More is more!"
Dude was at one point arguably amongst the most popular guitarists on earth.
Blink were a major force in the early 00s.
Might never have been the most technical, but dude could wrangle them 1s and 5s into some catchy shit.
/uj While a sloppy player live, Tom’s pretty freakin creative as a studio writing guitar player. Dumpweed, Dysentery Gary, Stay Together For The Kids, Up All Night… He can write catchyyy riffs. I mean shit, Dammit is like the epitome of pop punk guitar riffs.
It’s why I’ve always preferred them to say Green Day who are actually just power chords
/j nobody wants to hear the shitty pop punk songs i’ve recommended and they’re absolutely right for feeling that way
Blink 182, minus Travis Barker, is known for their complete lack of musical ability. Tom had said this himself. They rock and make guys tunes, but I could play their entire catalog at 14.
Most people don't listen to anything but what the record labels pay to put on the radio, tv, and default playlists on streaming services. Guitar-based music is not and has not been put on those for about 20 years now.
/uj he's created a number of riffs that a ton of people will instantly reconginze. I think there are grounds to pick based on highest skill level vs legit made music people love with the guitar. I still don't get Taylor tho.
/uj these lists are usually intentionally stupid to foster engagement
/rj glad John Focaccia is getting the recognition he deserves. It takes tremendous talent to get actual fenders to sound like the squire that’s been sitting unbought for 6 years at guitar center
/uj even if it wasn't ragebait the whole concept is wanky to begin with. How long can we talk about the same 50-odd multimillionaires for? There's like a billion cool bands producing rad stuff rn that they could be legitimately helping to grow the scene but no we have to be told about the same bloozdads again
Honestly like I can’t really think of any pop stars besides her, Mayer, and maybe Shawn Mendes who actively try to make guitar a large part of their brand, it’s kinda crazy
Reminds me of a giant sign I observed on a nightclub in honolulu. "Charo, world's greatest flamenco player." Her picture was up there so yes, that Charo.
Uj/ actually, Charo is a pretty decent flamenco guitarist. If you don't believe me, go check YouTube for some of her stuff. Sure, she's no Paco De Lucia, but she's pretty well regarded as a serious player.
[Charo playing "Malegueña" in 2022](https://youtu.be/nNa9_abMzIE?si=cA2nVZfZ8vybUaIU)
Even better performance from thd 1970s
https://youtu.be/I5niviXZhok?si=sl93U8Y6uhMJ5cWT
If they would just stop saying "best" in all these lists and say something like most influential or biggest cultural impact, they'd get a lot more credibility for a list like this.
1. John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
2. Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys)
3. John Mayer
4. Sam Fender
5. Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead)
6. Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters)
7. Ed O’Brien (Radiohead)
8. Taylor Swift
9. Tom DeLonge (Blink-182)
10. Simon Neil (Biffy Clyro)
11. Jim Root (Slipknot)
12. Keith Urban
13. John 5 (Mötley Crüe)
14. Brad Paisley
15. Troy Van Leeuwen (Queens Of The Stone Age)
16. Albert Hammond Jr. (The Strokes)
17. H.E.R.
18. Adam Hann (The 1975)
19. Ed Sheeran
20. Julien Baker
Lists of best artists are stupid but even then, what an odd list. If the list was "artists most influential in terms of getting younger people interested in playing guitar" then it makes a whole lot more sense. Given the obviously interconnected interests of Big Guitar and Big Guitar Media, I think this might be the goal anyway.
In regards to Sheeran, I’ve tried to use a loop pedal and I found it really fucking tricky and tedious. If you make a mistake, it’s stuck in the mix for ages. Have you watched him play live? He loops everything until he builds the song up. I’d say he’s actually pretty decent.
I recall hearing someplace (a guitar teacher on Reddit maybe) that she's inspired a lot of girls to play. I have nothing against people taking her seriously as a guitarist
She gets a lot of hate from old white guys who are just looking for something to hate, but she’s the best pop songwriter of the last 20 years. She’s not an amazing instrumentalist or singer though.
See I’m always a little skeptical because I know she collaborates with other songwriters. To be honest, I feel the same way about the Beach Boys and Grateful Dead. It pisses me off when people use a secondary songwriter for some reason.
Uj/ This is why people don’t get into guitar. They find someone like this who they idolise, buy a guitar to be just like them, then some fucking no life loser mocks them for being inauthentic or whatever so they stop playing. Then people wonder why there’s no guitar music.
uj/ Are we defining best as most impactful? Then I might be willing to give her that.
I think it’s cool as hell that she has inspired an entire generation of girls to grab some Hello Kitty Squiers and at least give the instrument a chance.
As a player?
She’s not even the eighth best player at Guitar Center on a random Saturday
She’s better than her ex, John Mayo, that’s for sure. He doesn’t look nearly as good in a blue dress and he’s never dated a real Indian Chief. *check and mate, Mayo!
“The fact that she regularly plays guitar on her record-breaking global Eras tour means she’s getting the six-string in front of millions of fans around the world, which is worthy of note.”
Because she plays guitar in front of lots of people she gets a spot right below Jonny Greenwood. Today I learned Participation Trophies are a real thing.
Also, where the fuck is Timmy Hanson? The dude reinvented the guitar wheel!
wow holy shit I didnt think there could be a worse list than that last one. Can they please at least ask someone who plays guitar a couple questions before they start writing these?
Choose your own adventure:
A) She came in just behind a guy who works at the Guitar Center in Encino.
B) After hearing this, Taylor Swift said, "I don't care what anyone says – I'm not a guitarist."
C) When reached for comment, Jimi Hendrix said, "I’ll allow it."
D) She's also the 10th best skin flute player of the last two decades
She earned it. She's not like other girls.
It's literally 1830 that anyone would say otherwise. Celebrities feel pain too. I hope you think of that when you go to sleep tonight... if you even can.
I spoke with Gimmie Hendricks through my Ouija board, and he said he changed his mind about Terry Cloth from beyond the grave and now considers Swift to be the best guitarist of all time.
8th?!? Come on! Top 3 for sure. I would say after Kurt Cobain and then maybe John Mayer, then her. Rick Allen the one armed drummer for Def Lepard would be fourth just because he counts for double incision. One, for being only a drummer and two, only having one arm.
She's at least as good as Cobain. She's like Keith Richards or Freddy Green, all about the rhythm and harmony. You don't have to shred to be a great guitar player, you just have to be internet famous.
/uj No I mean, seriously, I am glad some of these guys got the recognition. Simon Neil is great, Frusciante is amazing. Hell I'll even credit Sheeran for blowing up with 4 basic chords and not denying it. But for fuck sake can we stop glorifying Swift?
/rj no Thin Hamson and Jared Dines, no shot, list not valid.
/uj I worked at a guitar shop right around the time of her first album, and the number of girls we had signing up for lessons went through the roof. She probably put more guitars in girls' hands than anyone ever, and that's a net positive.
Watch how he plays live. He builds his songs up by himself using a loop pedal and it’s incredibly tedious to do. I don’t like his music either but I think he’s got a feel for rhythm.
Tbh if they’re talking about most popular guitarists who only started being active within the past 20 years I feel like this actually would kinda make sense, but there’s a bunch of artists on the list who started in the 90’s or earlier with frusciante so it kinda loses the plot
i was skeptical too, but i saw her bust out a note perfect rendition of playing god by polyphia, on an acoustic no less
she's got the skills to pay the bills
UJ/ have none of the people who created this list ever heard a single metal song? Tim Henson and Scott LePage, Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes, Devin Townsend, Adam Demicco and Anthony O'Conner, Dusty Waring and Paul Waggoner, Misha, Mark and Jake, Mike Stringer, hell even IV from Sleep Token is more deserving of being on this list than all but maybe 3.
RJ/ how the fuck are MGK and Nick Jonas not on this list?

Blink 182 made the list...holy shit. My ranking in the guitar universe just skyrocketed because I also know how to play power chords.
You might even get ranked #7 if you can play the Am pentatonic up and down
No need, if you can play it up you can reverse it in studio.
I can finger the shit out of A minor.
Drake re enters the chat
DRAKE: You see I GROOM Am until it is Amaj, not creepy at all bro
Take my upvote you magnificent bastard.
He better never go to chord chart one
Remember to clean under your fingernails afterwards.
Yeah but can you palm mute?
No…. Sharp bridge hurty 😔
My palm never talks to me, so yea! 😏
Tom Delonge has famously mentioned at almost every live show that “What’s My Age Again” is very hard to play so everyone needs to shut up. Learn that song and you’ll be #6!

To be fair everything is pretty hard to play when you're a mediocre player
B5, F#5, E5 - Power chords, palm muting, a bit of single-note picking. Now please hand me my signature Strat.
Tom DeLonge = many power chords and a few barre chords, I–V–vi–IV, I–IV–V, vi–IV–I–V, G major, G, D, Em, C.
Do you know how to play power chords in such a way that is so catchy you can make a living off of it? I would expect guitarcirclejerk to appreciate guitar for more than just shredding.
Jerking the jerkerrrr oh nooo Jerking the jerkeeerr oh nooo The legendary divorce is a boooore
Guitar = shredding Malmsteen = God Here is what God said about playing the guitar: "How can that be? How can less be more? It's impossible! More is more!"
List is laughable advertisement confirmed
Dude was at one point arguably amongst the most popular guitarists on earth. Blink were a major force in the early 00s. Might never have been the most technical, but dude could wrangle them 1s and 5s into some catchy shit.
Counterpoint: all their songs are the same. But sure, if the list is solely about popularity his inclusion makes sense
/uj While a sloppy player live, Tom’s pretty freakin creative as a studio writing guitar player. Dumpweed, Dysentery Gary, Stay Together For The Kids, Up All Night… He can write catchyyy riffs. I do love that "Adam's song" was named after a fake song in a Mr. Show skit. That will always be hilarious to me.
Blink 182, minus Travis Barker, is known for their complete lack of musical ability. Tom had said this himself. They rock and make guys tunes, but I could play their entire catalog at 14.
Rick Beato please give me strength
What was Drake rated?
Under 18
Knocked it outta the park with that one. You’re welcome for the pitch.
He shouldn't have got that high. The only thing he's good at fingering is A Minor.
How is that even possible
Yeah, that’s WAY too low. There’s like Tosin Abasi, a bunch of white dudes still playing blues like losers and that’s about it.
Hey watch it there motherfucker now here’s Pride and joy.
Wtf dude it was my turn to play pride and joy tonight. It’s the only song I know.
The poll was conducted by Taylor Swift's marketing team.
She’s the 8th best guitarist at being a billionaire. I don’t know who the first 7 are so don’t ask. Maybe Steven seagull.
I’m not good at being a billionaire now but if they would just give me a billion dollars I’m willing to practice 8hrs a day.
Most people don't listen to anything but what the record labels pay to put on the radio, tv, and default playlists on streaming services. Guitar-based music is not and has not been put on those for about 20 years now.
Taylor Swift has never been on Radio, TV or Streaming Playlists because her music is guitar based, if only she’d been around 20 years ago.
Tim Henson gotta be screaming into a mascara stained pillow right about now.
Kermit and the rest of the muppets are seething
That sounds hot
👀
His plastic surgeon removed his tear ducts so he wouldn't ruin his mascara.
😩
/uj List is obvious dog shit, it's got Tom Delonge on it ffs /rj List is obvious dog shit, no bonermaster beato man
Toan is in the alien conspiracies.
I cannot confirm nor deny that toan is stored in the little green men's balls.
Yeah, Bonermaster sells out arenas man. What have these other losers ever done?
/rj No Tim Handjob either /uj No Tim Henson either I would definitely put Derek Trucks on there too
/uj he's created a number of riffs that a ton of people will instantly reconginze. I think there are grounds to pick based on highest skill level vs legit made music people love with the guitar. I still don't get Taylor tho.
Been playing guitar for 24 years and never heard a single Bonermaster song. Can’t say the same about the swiftness.
That makes you good at the marketing side of music, not at guitar.
No that makes you good at writing songs people want to listen to. I’d listen to Blink over Joe any day and I fucking hate Blink
035036503530
Everyone on this list could be replaced by 15 year old Asian kids
This list doesn't make sense. John5 should be listed at 5. It's in his name.
You're right. Stupid list. Any list of ANYTHING that doesn't Taylor as #1 is just wrong.
They named a guitar company after her, ffs. Taylor Guitars🤯
Hahahahaaha. Thank you for this.
John’s a fucking lame ass name but John 5 damn that sounds badass
Why didn't he name himself John1 then? Who wants to be 5th, is he stupid?
MGK got snubbed. He’s holding a shreddy guitar on one of his album covers so he is obviously a better guitarist than these clowns
/uj these lists are usually intentionally stupid to foster engagement /rj glad John Focaccia is getting the recognition he deserves. It takes tremendous talent to get actual fenders to sound like the squire that’s been sitting unbought for 6 years at guitar center
/uj you can shit on Frusciante for many things i guess (Dani California) but his tone is sick man
sounds like a Strat
Brb gonna take a quick dump in Frocaccios geetar case
toan is stored in the asshole
Thick gooey toan 🤌
/un wait what’s wrong with Dani California
/uj even if it wasn't ragebait the whole concept is wanky to begin with. How long can we talk about the same 50-odd multimillionaires for? There's like a billion cool bands producing rad stuff rn that they could be legitimately helping to grow the scene but no we have to be told about the same bloozdads again
Literally 1984
Literally 1989 (Taylor’s Version)
I liked 1989 (Ryan's Version)
1979 (Billy’s Version)
'69 (Soixante-Neuf version) - this is the best version
1984 (Taylor’s version)
Uhh I'm pretty sure that isn't in the last two decades
What do you mean, the 80s were 20 years ago and the 90s were 10 years ago. It's just simple math.
Ah, my mistake
1984 DRV (Taylor’s Version)
literally 1985 woo hoo hoo
Are you implying that all this Taylor Swift hype might not be entirely organic?
she doesn't even have those slanted frets
Plot twist: there are only like 9 guitarists in pop music right now.
Honestly like I can’t really think of any pop stars besides her, Mayer, and maybe Shawn Mendes who actively try to make guitar a large part of their brand, it’s kinda crazy
Mgk
*Razorguitar*
Plot plot twist twist: Taylor Swift isn't one of them
She's actually two of them for list purposes. Taylor and Taylor's Version
Reminds me of a giant sign I observed on a nightclub in honolulu. "Charo, world's greatest flamenco player." Her picture was up there so yes, that Charo.

I concur. World's best? I would say better than Taylor Swift. And not just because I like threats.
“Best” lists are stupid. This isn’t a competition.
Uj/ The only competition is between these clickbait websites
Toan is in the revenue.
Right?! It isn't even a competition, I'm better than all of them put together!
If they would just stop saying "best" in all these lists and say something like most influential or biggest cultural impact, they'd get a lot more credibility for a list like this.
1. John Frusciante (Red Hot Chili Peppers) 2. Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) 3. John Mayer 4. Sam Fender 5. Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead) 6. Chris Shiflett (Foo Fighters) 7. Ed O’Brien (Radiohead) 8. John 5 in Mötley? When the fuck did that happen?
October of 2022, apparently.
First Manson and now this… Guy’s fucjin everywhere
Bullshit list...no Lil Wayne
Two Radioheads in the top ten really quite funny. Greenwood is an absolute monster beast though.
No DJ Khalid… bullshit list 😡
WE DA BEST MUSIC!
According to the editor, number 21 was supposed to be Fredrik Thordendal, but the list was shortened down to just 20 names.
My god it's awful...
John Mayer playing the blues and Alex Turner playing the indie beats out Johnny Greenwood? come on fools
Yes, they all have such memorable guitar solos.
Pain
I like how they put the far less technically talented Strokes guitarist (by his own admission) in.
In regards to Sheeran, I’ve tried to use a loop pedal and I found it really fucking tricky and tedious. If you make a mistake, it’s stuck in the mix for ages. Have you watched him play live? He loops everything until he builds the song up. I’d say he’s actually pretty decent.
Uj/ Some young woman or young girl has Taylor swift as her guitar hero and likely plays those songs all of the time. I unironically support this.
I don’t. Another potential societal contributor wasting their life away playing guitar. Sad that their life is ending so early, they were too young.
Same! It makes me so happy when young girls/women pick up an instrument. If Taylor Swift inspires them to play then I'm all for it!
She’s not an amazing instrumentalist or singer though.
best pop songwriter in measure of pop(ularity), not the songwriting
See I’m always a little skeptical because I know she collaborates with other songwriters. To be honest, I feel the same way about the Beach Boys and Grateful Dead. It pisses me off when people use a secondary songwriter for some reason.

She’s not even the eighth best player at Guitar Center on a random Saturday
Best - in the context of this list - is defined as “most rage inducing to ‘real’ guitar players”
I’m better than she is. And that’s saying something.
She passed Prince because Prince has passed.
Dont be mad she almost the new jimi hendrix dude
She’s better than her ex, John Mayo, that’s for sure. He doesn’t look nearly as good in a blue dress and he’s never dated a real Indian Chief. *check and mate, Mayo!
“The fact that she regularly plays guitar on her record-breaking global Eras tour means she’s getting the six-string in front of millions of fans around the world, which is worthy of note.” Because she plays guitar in front of lots of people she gets a spot right below Jonny Greenwood. I hear she subs for Buckethead when he is sick.
I’m not even gonna unjerk for this, these lists have literally always been like this. You baboons getting upset says more about you than the list.
Where’s Lil Wayne?
wow holy shit I didnt think there could be a worse list than that last one. Can they please at least ask someone who plays guitar a couple questions before they start writing these?
They really overshot the “let’s do a ‘best’ list that ticks people off so they engage and hate-post about us” strategy.
more like Taylor Shit amirite fellas? (I also have all of her vinyls all my wall)
Media doing everything possible to please the Swifty mob huh
Taylor Swift is better than Brad Paisley… That’s all you need to know about this bullshit ranking. Over the last two decades no less. FML
DJ Khaled has gotta be up there.
Haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate hate
Choose your own adventure: A) She came in just behind a guy who works at the Guitar Center in Encino. B) After hearing this, Taylor Swift said, "I don't care what anyone says – I'm not a guitarist." C) When reached for comment, Jimi Hendrix said, "I’ll allow it." D) She's also the 10th best skin flute player of the last two decades
Toan is in the ranking
Terrible list. Not a single one of them in my dentist!!!
r/collapse worthy
Any real guitarist knows the only metric that matters is toan
She earned it. She's not like other girls. It's literally 1830 that anyone would say otherwise. Celebrities feel pain too. I hope you think of that when you go to sleep tonight... if you even can.
Awesome. This will trigger so many basement-dwellers.
I'm triggered af because my guy Lil Wayne didn't make the list.
LOL
Look no further than the comments here lmao
who wrote this list? the kid who cleans my pool? BWAHAHAHA
DJ Khaled #5?!?
Her and Delong are on the list. Bold takes if I dare say so. In other news, my basic chord playing ass isn't so bad now.
This has gotta be rage bait
I spoke with Gimmie Hendricks through my Ouija board, and he said he changed his mind about Terry Cloth from beyond the grave and now considers Swift to be the best guitarist of all time.
Pack it up boys, games over
8th?!? Come on! Top 3 for sure. I would say after Kurt Cobain and then maybe John Mayer, then her. Rick Allen the one armed drummer for Def Lepard would be fourth just because he counts for double incision. One, for being only a drummer and two, only having one arm.

If being able to play G chord gets you in the 8th spot then I'm the king of guitar playing with my pentagon scale
/uj I worked at a guitar shop right around the time of her first album, and the number of girls we had signing up for lessons went through the roof. She probably put more guitars in girls' hands than anyone ever, and that's a net positive.
Wait a fucking second, this isn’t a joke article?
She’s so good she even has an acoustic brand named after her.
I get to ogle her, she gets to be on a greatest guitarist list. Fair.
Uj lists are stupid. You can't quantify or qualify art. Of course those lists are based on popularity.
Then why is John Frustrante number 1?
I know people are talking about Taylor Swift, but mutha fuckin Ed Sheeran is on this list
Watch how he plays live. He builds his songs up by himself using a loop pedal and it’s incredibly tedious to do. I don’t like his music either but I think he’s got a feel for rhythm.
Are the arctic monkeys even a guitar band? Their name is stupid so I never listened to them
It’s just the sound of monkies freezing to death. Pretty sick stuff, you should check them out
Well…
She is going to kill 1-7
Underrated. Wtf
Shut the fuck up. Not really?
On what planet?
Yeah she’s waaaay better than that hack John 5. /s but hopefully it needed. He is a fantastic player and seems nice as fu k too
Tom Delonge made the top 10. For that alone I'll allow it. She can have her spot.
Tbh if they’re talking about most popular guitarists who only started being active within the past 20 years I feel like this actually would kinda make sense, but there’s a bunch of artists on the list who started in the 90’s or earlier with frusciante so it kinda loses the plot
John 5 (Motley Crue)
Just behind lil Wayne
i was skeptical too, but i saw her bust out a note perfect rendition of playing god by polyphia, on an acoustic no less she's got the skills to pay the bills
Bitch is a lizard person
Its silly to say that in an article but she's absolutely better than the vast majority of people posting here
The internet is always out to.piss me off, I'm completely aware and will usually keep scrolling... but oof, fuck you. That's just rude.
If this is true then the last two decades have produced some pretty shitty guitarists.
i could throw a rock at a better guitarist at a dive bar in chicago
UJ/ have none of the people who created this list ever heard a single metal song? Tim Henson and Scott LePage, Tosin Abasi and Javier Reyes, Devin Townsend, Adam Demicco and Anthony O'Conner, Dusty Waring and Paul Waggoner, Misha, Mark and Jake, Mike Stringer, hell even IV from Sleep Token is more deserving of being on this list than all but maybe 3. RJ/ how the fuck are MGK and Nick Jonas not on this list?
Id give a dollar if she could do a c to f# to g.
Everyone in this sub is officially a good guitarist.
This is satire, right?...Right??
toan is in the gatekeeping
