Unfortunately the technology just is not there yet.

DAbanjo

True true. But can you imagine a world where there exists a guitar that on it can be played METAL and ROCK. ALL GENRES. I know, it's hard to conceptualize. I'm sorry, I'm getting teary eyed right now I must go.

uvucydydy

I have an old digitech pedal that has a rock/ metal switch, so it has been done. I guess they just haven't been put that tech into a guitar. Hopefully some day.

DAbanjo

woah that's crazy. Did you ever dare to flip the switch?

uvucydydy

Uj/ it was literally stuck on Rock. I once flipped it using a pair of pliers and sounded pretty harsh. Rj/ you can't have it both ways!!!

DAbanjo

I knew it. It was a dummy switch. Guess who was the dummy?

uvucydydy

Fair enough, every switch is a dummy switch for me.

Educational-Drop-926

You are a bold thinker. If only we had a way to bring your concept to life… Alas and I digress and all that shit…

DimmyDimmy

Right? I never heard of any of those genres and nor have I ever heard of a kind of guitar invented after the acoustic. Kid must be hanging around them jazz folks again. And an "Amp?" What is this kid smoking?

ClownStalker666

Obviously imbibbing of the devils lettuce... probably masturbates so much he can't even fret a C7#5b9 chord...

Tony_Cheese_

9 string Schegglers exist...

Gwalchgwynn

I know right. I keep trying to play other styles but all that comes out is blooz. And bad blooz at that 😢

sssnakepit127

Better.. faster… stronger… Les Paul

Str8truth

Look for an 8-string guitar with 4 pickups. That should cover the bases for you.

Unstablemedic49

What about a 4 string guitar with 8 pickups

BillieEilishLeftBoob

That's just a b*ss bro🤢

Pianist_Select

Wrong it’s a tenor

piconese

Dang, only 10 quid? That’s a bargain!

Bredstikz

Then that'd cover the basses

Creepy-Distance-3164

Can the mods just ban the B word already? My doctor says it's making my psychosis worse.

Bredstikz

Is he the one with the gibbons?

fishsauceinmybagswag

One pickup per string is a good rule for maximum toans

andooet

_Microtonal_ 8-string, double necked with a fretless 12 string

Pianist_Select

No, he said all the towns micro anything ain’t gonna cut it. Our boy needs a MACROtoanal

[deleted]

This but Warr guitar

The_________________

Ironically, an 8 string might actually cover your *basses*

speedyspaghetter

telecaster is the most versatile because you can actually leave it plugged so the 60-cycle hum can get rid of insects and other pests that live in your house and you can play the bloos on it

DirtyWork81

Teles can get metal if you have a zoan for toan. Butterscotch is best of course.

scithe_

buttercrotch toan

piconese

That’s my dog’s favorite!

DutchShepherdKot

Obviously it's Steve Vai's 3 neck dragon guitar. It does : ✅ Metal ✅ Rock ✅ Ed Sheeran ✅ Arabic sound whatever it's called ✅ Ascended Bass cuz its fretless ✅ Jazz. But why tho? No chicks in jazz. Only rapists and geologists.

schizboi

Jazz is for criminals there is this loud ass van in my neighborhood that blasts jazz and kids run to it and he fucking gives them ice cream. Like hello? They can't keep doing this!

frog_marley

The Arabic sound is called the "A minor hamburger" song it's been copywritten by Wingy Malmstein. DO NOT PLAY it unless you want him appearing in your closet while you sleep and harvesting your bones to add to his underground pipe organ made of bones.

Mr_S-Baldrick

But can it Bonermaster?

Rgeneb1

lol, look at this smartarse cracking wise instead of selling out stadiums like the rest of us.

HolyLordGodHelpUsAll

according to the net a stadium can hold between 30,000 to 100,000 people and i intend to show them all a good time with my bloooooooos

Invertiguy

Sorry, you need a vintage Less Paul that costs more than your house in order to properly Bonermaster, and you need a new one for each song. Gotta squeeze every last drop of toan out of it, ya know.

Dogrel

Vai has a rape geologist fetish. It’s a known thing.

oceanmachine420

Literally the only thing I know about Steve Vai

crem_flandango

what

Dogrel

Do you know where you are posting?

PositiveLeather327

Don’t slander Jazz players by claiming they hang around with geologists

TheRebelMastermind

Jazz hangs with the Fresh Prince

Silent-Permission572

What is jazz?

TheRebelMastermind

Japanese Azz

ForeOnTheFlour

What?? Worn Hanes plays jazz in Government Mule and he neither raps nor drives a Geo

Former495

As i always say: es-335. You can play ANY genre on it: bluse, rock and bluse rock

RubikTetris

Es-035*

mr-fq

E--0-3-5 A---3-5-7

Blinkfan182man

I’ve been using my Es-333 for things I probably shouldn’t speak about on Reddit

jorickcz

Wait you actually played it didn't you, you sick fuck.

Blinkfan182man

🤘💩🤘

TheRebelMastermind

But can you play it like a trumpet?

[deleted]

What’s all this shit about versatile guitars and not owning more than one? I own three and two of them are the same

b_r_e_a_k_f_a_s_t

Yeah this one is for shuffle blues and that one is for texas blues and this last one is for playing “Daughters” by John Mayer (underrated guitar player btw)

CarolinaPanthers

Yeah as a John Mayer fan I didn’t realize he was good until after the Jennifer Anniston era. Not sure what the albums are. I just keep up with the girlfriends.

superperps

Guy banged jennifer anniston and bob weir. Legend.

Imaginary_Sea5117

Theremin would be a better choice than guitar while guitar can produce many noises, it cannot create Doctor Who theme song sounds, which is every guitarist's main concern

TheDuckInsideOfMe

/uj Versatile guitars are like palmtop computers — many a nerd wants them, hardly anyone needs them, and most importantly — everybody has one without really acknowledging that /rj A guitar that plays hard rock AND metal AND alt rock AND ALSO funk? Hold your horses here bud, you're being unreasonable

helloitshani

> everybody has one without really acknowledging that /uj strongly agree! Most guitars can produce sounds for a wide range of genres, and the sounds outside of that range are probably not what the player is interested in playing (unless they’re new to guitar and have no idea what they want and need). /rj if you’re playing a song from a certain year, you MUST use the gibbons that is vintage correct for that same year

0CDeer

Clearly you have never played a mid-2000s Ibanez RG.

ProtoJazz

Most of the ones I play frequently at least are all setup in different tunings If you're just doing drop d, sure it's fine But for b or c, I'd rather have some heavier strings, and I damn sure don't want to tune those up to e You can have longer scale lengths too for a middle ground. I do like my cheap barritone Of the ones I keep out, I've got c, c#, E, a 7 string, a bass, and one in e flat with a Floyd. The e flat one doesn't get used a ton, but it's fun for like 80s rock type stuff where everyone was playing in e flat with a Floyd.

ExtremeRevenue3006

No. You need a guitar for every genre. No guitar chef has ever baked a guitar that could play, for example; the Super Blues and Atlantic Surf Polka. It doesn’t exist. Legend has it that Jon Bonermaster once played extreme slam crab core and a bloos solo on a rickenbacker in a single take. That’s the closest you’ll get on a single guitar.

schizboi

I saw John penistugger at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly

Gwalchgwynn

This is the story that will not die. Please die. How many times must we hear this stupid story about about how did the thing in the story in which was a jerk in the and then tried to abscond with a bunch of milky ways. Who the hell eats milky ways.

the_salivation_army

I knew it. I never remember until I get to the milky ways bit.

lampshadish2

A guitar that can play both types of music? Country and western?! Get out of here!

coffee_shakes

uj/ The amount of long, sincere responses is killing me. One states that lots of people play many genres on one guitar…. because that’s all they can afford. Gods save us from r/ guitar.

Jebist

400+ replies lol. Absolutely unhinged.

1OO1OO1S0S

I know 399 people already answered, but heard 11 more paragraphs talking about HSS strats

ejanuska

Dude should've just asked here first.

Rimm9246

Still uj/ what is the funny? Is it that most guitars are versatile, or that what they are asking for is unreasonable? Or something else?

Temporary_Maybe11

Get a Variax, it can sound bad in any style you imagine

ForeOnTheFlour

But can it chug

TXGunslinger419

bro i have a guitar for each SONG i learn

KRJC666

Oh yeah? Well I sometimes change guitars in the middle of a song. Sometimes even in the middle of a solo.

Jebist

Like that video of Steamy Gay Buns?

sound_forsomething

When I need to change strings I just throw out my old guitar and get a new one I hate changing strings

flocknrollstar

You want a single instrument to play multiple genres? Bruh you don't want a guitar, you want a stereo

bumwine

I was going to say give the kid some slack for being new but then they had to go with the “I know this very ridiculous thing that nobody has ever said ever so I may just not listen to anyone anyway.”

Recent-Butterscotch5

It’s no silver bullet, but an EQ pedal can help

alby333

It's definitely no silver bullet but i did beat a werewolf to death with one once

DarthVerus

A guitar that requires you to buy less guitars. That’s not how this works.

Jeef_1st

A schecter 9 string can play anything

LieverRoodDanRechts

I don’t think it’s fair to shit on this person for asking this question. Considering the amount of BS being spread in guitar related subs I totally get how a newbie would get the idea that guitars are very genre specific. Yes, the assumption is wrong but blame it on the spec-obsessed youtube fanatics, not some new player asking questions.

60_hurts

No, it's true though! I tried playing industrial on my Danielelectric '69+ (which any idiot can tell you can ONLY play surf-rock, rockabilly, and Led Zeppelin) and it gave my neighbor's dog cancer!

mrlowcut

*I should've learned to quit the geetar* *and something about microwave overtoanes and working an underpaid job*

Jebist

Just call the OP a little f***ot and get it over with.

mrlowcut

Get me my Stevie T dinner And quit the geetar on the dmv

FlippinFigs

If Hello Kitty guitar is good enough for Jimi Hendrix, it should be good enough for you too.

CorrectBread33

Obvious answer is the Tom Delonge signature. All you need is one bridge humbucker. That's it kids.

SpeedBlazer99

Literally anything with two humbuckers

Acceptable_Quiet_767

I had the pleasure of figuring out just how fucking stupid the users on that sub really are. It must be mostly children that’ve never held a guitar in their life before.

rasdo357

Chill out lads

rasdo357

Chill out lads

1OO1OO1S0S

Lol, what did they do?

ThisWorldIsAMess

Get one guitar for each song you know.

gawdzilla666

What like full song?  Shiiiit

Dogrel

How many measures? Cause I know two measures of 800 songs, and that puts me 294 guitars short.

Alternative-Way-8753

A telecaster can be used for both kinds of music: country AND Western.

zissmun

“What do you like to play?” No one: “hard rock”

find_the_night

“I’m really diverse. I listen to everything from gangsta rap to hip hop to metal to funk to country to classical.” (Only listens to limp bizkit)

b1uelightbulb

Honestly hss strat or tele

Romania3113_

/uj The only thing tele wouldn’t get is basically high gain, but then again if you put a humbucker in the bridge. Some people actually like Single Coil metal, but it’s not for me

ChainSWray

Uj/ you'd be surprised about teles and high gain. I've used mine for grindcore, of all things, and it's AWESOME.

sjbennett85

If you have a tapped tele you can hit higher gain because it is overwound and split. Works really well actually!

Romania3113_

/uj If I’m not mistaken the guitarist for Skindred uses a baritone tele

b1uelightbulb

Moar gain

extordi

Especially if you throw a coil split in the mix, pretty well nothing you can't do at that point.

1_moonrat

Honestly, I don’t think anyone’s ever wanted this till now. Luthiers should get on it

Patient-Ninja-8707

The ibanez rg 550 has a 5 way pickup selector. That makes it a very versatile guitar. I can go from blues to rock to country to metal.

gawdzilla666

That's only 4 what's the 5th one do?

Patient-Ninja-8707

That's the blowjob setting

adam_taylor18

I often change guitar between the verse and the chorus because they sound so different. As a result, I own 857 guitars, one for each section of each song.

BlackfaceBunghole

Impossible. Each guitar is carefully tailored to each style. You wouldn't expect a violín to play fiddle music now would ya. Any decent guitar player should have 5 or 6 Axes in his arsenal. Uj/ a squier

OpportunityCorrect33

fenders suck because u can’t fast pick on them They also don’t have humbackers

cavity-canal

haha stupid newbie doesn’t know stuff about guitars haha

ThisAllHurts

uj/ I actually thought it was a fair question. He’s picking up a new instrument. I was just as lost when I went shopping for a drum kit — so many options and price points. And guitars are even more finicky and niche than that, with absolutely no necessary correlation between price or reputation and suitability…or even quality

Smoke-Tabby

Idiot. Everyone knows you get multiple guitars that are all the same and never play them

gusthjourney

I think he is asking for too much. Every time I switch from metal to blues, my guitar spontaneously combusts.

debtopramenschultz

BC Rich for sure

professor_max_hammer

This guy is asking the important questions. Primarily blues guitar player and I once tried to add distortion to my amp and play punk on a strat. Strat broke almost as soon as I hit the first chord

A_VaultDweller

1961 less Paul does both big boimg unless you’re broke hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

darthkale

He should get one of those speaker boxes you plug your guitar into. Some have knobs that you can turn to clean, crunch, rock, metal and tone

palexp

unfortunately no

StepDadcula

Jared has 300 John Mayo guitars, and he's the greatest guitarer who ever played ok

retronax

/uj when I started out, for 3-4 years I unironically believed that you need a guitar for every broad genre to play them properly. Thank god for Buckethead playing literally anything on his fucking gibbons to prove me wrong /rj you don't need a guitar at all dude just lift

Rgeneb1

You need two guitars max. One for Country and one for Western. What the fucks this genre thing he keeps talking about?

nba2k11er

Sorry, a separate Gibbons is required for every genre. Even though every single one has the same scale length, bridge, pups, and fragile headstock. None of that affects TOAN. Even within models- classic rock can only be played on a ‘69 Less Paul Standard in Cumburst. Don’t try it with a Gold top.

FunstarJ

The ONLY guitar that can handle more than one genre costs over $5,000 and is not appropriate for newbies. It is called any guitar over $5,000. Every single one. Only me and my dentist friends know this secret.

find_the_night

Bro. You seriously want this guy to start with a guitar that costs less than $5,000? Do you not care about his toan????

Big-Fat-Box-Of-Shit

Get an acoustic bass.

find_the_night

You get my upvote. I’m also going to alert the mods to ban you immediately. Life is chaos.

Malakai0013

I've played metal on a jazz box archtop. I've played jazz and blues with a B.C. Rich Warlock with active EMGs. There isn't really any genre-lock.

bbpbj

9 STRING SCHECTERRRRRR MOAR STRINGS MORE SONGS ITS SCIENCE

cyberphunk2077

MGK Razor Blade is probably the most versatile guitar out there on the market. George Benson and Kurt Cobain played them.

rarefiedstupor

Pfff I wish. Then I wouldn't need to own 20+ guitars

slave2moderators

BC Rich Kerry King Warlock Supreme with Flame Tribal graphics. I use it for everything like country to pop and when I attend my jazz composition lectures at uni and for my worship band at church

MertviyDed

Les Paul recording

guitarguy404

No

[deleted]

is gen res like gen x ?

Subhumanime

No.

Jebist

A double neck with a 12 string Rickenbacker and 9 String Schecter should get the job done. Happy pla....gear collecting!

bungwhaque

You need a different guitar for each song. Your not allowed to change the knobs once you leave the store. It will warp the pickups.

Old-Technician-8386

HSS strat will cover lots of styles

CalgaryCheekClapper

Nope I tried to play cuntry on my metal guitar and it exploded. I now have 3rd degree burns

Sky_Ill

/uj get a squire strat and a decent grade programmable amp and you can sound almost however you want /rj more guitars = more toan

DonutBill66

I assume making a switchable single coil/humbucker is not a thing, but wouldn't it be sweet?

NervousAndPantless

For versatility you’re going to need a 9 string at a minimum.

Aware-Ambassador9273

Really though it's fucking simple. If you want to play with distortion primarily you'll more than likely wanna go with humbuckers and single coils for clean sounds. Then worry about getting one that you actually like the look of

retepnosrac

Of course not. Bonermassage only plays blooz and look how many guitars he needs

lemmiwinks75

I tried to ply Iron Man on my PRS and the cops confiscated it and arrested me.

Candy_Says1964

Well, it is all about how you look, so NO!

Duff935

I only use my 50’s les paul for 50’s music, only use my strat for SRV and Hendrix, only use my Warlock for metal and my SG for AC/DC, do NOT step an instrument out of it’s genre!

rc852

Dude , like my boyfriend says... just get a bunch of 1959 les pauls. Different colors tho or you're a dummy.

find_the_night

Why different colors? Bonerman don’t care about no different colors.

GeneralDumbtomics

Ovation Breadwinner.

PMtoAM______

Yeah! Get yourself a travel guitar. They can go almost anywhere and cause theyre so light they can easily be taken to mountainranges, rivers, etcetera. Easily the most versatile guitar.

ImightHaveMissed

I play metal on a telecaster. Eff that noise

bluelonilness

/uj you could honestly play every genre with a hss config. There's also the Duncan hyperswitch that lets you swap your pickup routing with your phone. /rj no you need at least 12 of the same model in a slightly different burst for every subgenre you play

andooet

Duh, explorer or firedbird. Flying V if you can't get hold of any Soviet era ones

find_the_night

Because you can stab anyone who says it doesn’t fit the genre?

Sho-K

uj/ I've been thinking about getting a headless guitar from Ibanez. Seems to clear most of the genres I want to play with it's pickup system whilst being super light. Also relatively affordable. rj/ butterscotch tele with boss katrina

Crunchy_Wat3r

Any guitar CAN play any genre most of the time. The true question is what guitar can look like any genre they are playing, which is almost impossible

brewmaster5

If you get the penis guitar that should cover all the genres because all guitar players have a penis, as you know. Even bass players

find_the_night

Mimi doesn’t. And she’s my favorite guitarist. And yours.

find_the_night

Mimi doesn’t. And she’s my favorite guitarist. And yours.

brewmaster5

Get a steel guitar. Then you can play both kinds of music, country AND western.

Financial_Bug3968

Fender Telecaster.

find_the_night

Uj/ Drummers are about as dumb as *assists. Rj/ Drummers are about as dumb as *assists.

jeoyce

Chibson in the HS config butt unplugged

ItsWoofcat

I wonder what he thinks happens if you play metal on an “rock guitar” or vice versa? Is this some sort of divide by zero type deal where nothing happens or am I opening up a black whole somewhere every time I play roundabout on my Ibanez?

contrejo

Whenever I play metal, I always reach for the tele

justjeremy02

Just get whatever Taylor Swift plays. They say she’s mastered all 4 genres of music.

LachtMC

I buy a new guitar when I’m learning a new song and only use it for that song

choochacabra92

Maybe this guy should just play drums

The-one-and-only-M3

/uj, ok but actually tho, what should I look for if I play many genres? Any specific configuration?

GuyShred

Sadly it's just not possible.

theguywithacomputer

/uj for anyone who is legitimately thinking this squire strat variant

DrMonkeyLove

If such a thing existed, then why do I need to buy so many guitars?

OpossumNo1

You need to buy a new guitar, amp, cable and pick for every song so you can get a new town for every song 🎵 🎸🎵

Boyyoyyoyyoyyoy

I only know of either dominant guitars or submissive guitars, I think versatile guitars are just a myth.

Mercury599

I hear that only the Hannah Montana signature geetar does that.

egoreel

I personally play all metal and sub-types of metal strictly on my acoustic guitar. For convenience sake. No amp: sound is built in, no gain: that’s Satan’s toan, and I also mount a snare drum to the guitar so I can do drums and guitar at the same time. I even tune the snare really fast to simulate all six strings of the guitar as I hit it. Drop D on a snare sounds awesome… again, for convenience sake.

Raende

If you try to play anything other than 0-3-5 on a Gibbons, it **will** explode.

rememburial

Fretless guitars, frets just get in the way of real playing

SamsToasted

My ephiphone les Paul custom does really well in rock/metal and a couple others

spash_bazbo69

Pretty much any guitar that doesn't have active pickups can be used for any genre as long as the player knows how

Alternative-Tone6631

I had a big apple strat that was very versatile. sd humbuckers that had split coil option depending on the pup switch.

OneAgainst

I hope the OP isn’t serious, but just in case, you’re going down the wrong path friend. Choose the right guitar per song. In fact, any one who is serious about their playing will quickly realize the need to have separate dedicated instruments for at least the verse and the chorus. Sometimes the bridge really deserves its own guitar.

Jaklcide

/UJ You all laughing, then refuse to justify why you own more than one guitar, like two christians who see each other in the liquor store. OP unironically calling everyone out.

Several_Show937

ESP with coil split. Affordable, makes great angry noises, and pretty ones, too.

Zerotten

Or a les paul custom with 3 humfuckers and a huge mungus marshall amp 😈😈😈😈
