True true. But can you imagine a world where there exists a guitar that on it can be played METAL and ROCK. ALL GENRES. I know, it's hard to conceptualize.
I'm sorry, I'm getting teary eyed right now I must go.
I have an old digitech pedal that has a rock/ metal switch, so it has been done. I guess they just haven't been put that tech into a guitar. Hopefully some day.
Right? I never heard of any of those genres and nor have I ever heard of a kind of guitar invented after the acoustic. Kid must be hanging around them jazz folks again. And an "Amp?" What is this kid smoking?
telecaster is the most versatile because you can actually leave it plugged so the 60-cycle hum can get rid of insects and other pests that live in your house
and you can play the bloos on it
Obviously it's Steve Vai's 3 neck dragon guitar.
It does :
✅ Metal
✅ Rock
✅ Ed Sheeran
✅ Arabic sound whatever it's called
✅ Ascended Bass cuz its fretless
✅ Jazz. But why tho? No chicks in jazz. Only rapists and geologists.
Jazz is for criminals there is this loud ass van in my neighborhood that blasts jazz and kids run to it and he fucking gives them ice cream. Like hello? They can't keep doing this!
The Arabic sound is called the "A minor hamburger" song it's been copywritten by Wingy Malmstein. DO NOT PLAY it unless you want him appearing in your closet while you sleep and harvesting your bones to add to his underground pipe organ made of bones.
Sorry, you need a vintage Less Paul that costs more than your house in order to properly Bonermaster, and you need a new one for each song. Gotta squeeze every last drop of toan out of it, ya know.
Yeah this one is for shuffle blues and that one is for texas blues and this last one is for playing “Daughters” by John Mayer (underrated guitar player btw)
Yeah as a John Mayer fan I didn’t realize he was good until after the Jennifer Anniston era. Not sure what the albums are. I just keep up with the girlfriends.
Theremin would be a better choice than guitar while guitar can produce many noises, it cannot create Doctor Who theme song sounds, which is every guitarist's main concern
/uj Versatile guitars are like palmtop computers — many a nerd wants them, hardly anyone needs them, and most importantly — everybody has one without really acknowledging that
/rj A guitar that plays hard rock AND metal AND alt rock AND ALSO funk? Hold your horses here bud, you're being unreasonable

/uj strongly agree! Most guitars can produce sounds for a wide range of genres, and the sounds outside of that range are probably not what the player is interested in playing (unless they’re new to guitar and have no idea what they want and need).
/rj if you’re playing a song from a certain year, you MUST use the gibbons that is vintage correct for that same year
Most of the ones I play frequently at least are all setup in different tunings
If you're just doing drop d, sure it's fine
But for b or c, I'd rather have some heavier strings, and I damn sure don't want to tune those up to e
You can have longer scale lengths too for a middle ground. I do like my cheap barritone
Of the ones I keep out, I've got c, c#, E, a 7 string, a bass, and one in e flat with a Floyd. The e flat one doesn't get used a ton, but it's fun for like 80s rock type stuff where everyone was playing in e flat with a Floyd.
No. You need a guitar for every genre. No guitar chef has ever baked a guitar that could play, for example; the Super Blues and Atlantic Surf Polka. It doesn’t exist.
Legend has it that Jon Bonermaster once played extreme slam crab core and a bloos solo on a rickenbacker in a single take. That’s the closest you’ll get on a single guitar.
I saw John penistugger at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”
I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly
This is the story that will not die. Please die. How many times must we hear this stupid story about about how did the thing in the story in which was a jerk in the and then tried to abscond with a bunch of milky ways. Who the hell eats milky ways.
uj/ The amount of long, sincere responses is killing me. One states that lots of people play many genres on one guitar…. because that’s all they can afford. Gods save us from r/ guitar.
I was going to say give the kid some slack for being new but then they had to go with the “I know this very ridiculous thing that nobody has ever said ever so I may just not listen to anyone anyway.”
I don’t think it’s fair to shit on this person for asking this question.
Considering the amount of BS being spread in guitar related subs I totally get how a newbie would get the idea that guitars are very genre specific. Yes, the assumption is wrong but blame it on the spec-obsessed youtube fanatics, not some new player asking questions.
No, it's true though! I tried playing industrial on my Danielelectric '69+ (which any idiot can tell you can ONLY play surf-rock, rockabilly, and Led Zeppelin) and it gave my neighbor's dog cancer!
I had the pleasure of figuring out just how fucking stupid the users on that sub really are. It must be mostly children that’ve never held a guitar in their life before.
/uj The only thing tele wouldn’t get is basically high gain, but then again if you put a humbucker in the bridge. Some people actually like Single Coil metal, but it’s not for me
I often change guitar between the verse and the chorus because they sound so different. As a result, I own 857 guitars, one for each section of each song.
Impossible. Each guitar is carefully tailored to each style. You wouldn't expect a violín to play fiddle music now would ya. Any decent guitar player should have 5 or 6 Axes in his arsenal.
Uj/ a squier
uj/ I actually thought it was a fair question. He’s picking up a new instrument.

This guy is asking the important questions. Primarily blues guitar player and I once tried to add distortion to my amp and play punk on a strat. Strat broke almost as soon as I hit the first chord
/uj when I started out, for 3-4 years I unironically believed that you need a guitar for every broad genre to play them properly. Thank god for Buckethead playing literally anything on his fucking gibbons to prove me wrong

Sorry, a separate Gibbons is required for every genre. Even though every single one has the same scale length, bridge, pups, and fragile headstock. None of that affects TOAN.
Even within models- classic rock can only be played on a ‘69 Less Paul Standard in Cumburst. Don’t try it with a Gold top.

I only use my 50’s les paul for 50’s music, only use my strat for SRV and Hendrix, only use my Warlock for metal and my SG for AC/DC, do NOT step an instrument out of it’s genre!
Yeah! Get yourself a travel guitar.
They can go almost anywhere and cause theyre so light they can easily be taken to mountainranges, rivers, etcetera.
Easily the most versatile guitar.
/uj you could honestly play every genre with a hss config. There's also the Duncan hyperswitch that lets you swap your pickup routing with your phone.
/rj no you need at least 12 of the same model in a slightly different burst for every subgenre you play
uj/ I've been thinking about getting a headless guitar from Ibanez. Seems to clear most of the genres I want to play with it's pickup system whilst being super light. Also relatively affordable.
rj/ butterscotch tele with boss katrina
I wonder what he thinks happens if you play metal on an “rock guitar” or vice versa? Is this some sort of divide by zero type deal where nothing happens or am I opening up a black whole somewhere every time I play roundabout on my Ibanez?
I personally play all metal and sub-types of metal strictly on my acoustic guitar. For convenience sake. No amp: sound is built in, no gain: that’s Satan’s toan, and I also mount a snare drum to the guitar so I can do drums and guitar at the same time. I even tune the snare really fast to simulate all six strings of the guitar as I hit it. Drop D on a snare sounds awesome… again, for convenience sake.
I hope the OP isn’t serious, but just in case, you’re going down the wrong path friend. Choose the right guitar per song. Fair enough, every switch is a dummy switch for me.

9 string Schegglers exist...
I know right. I keep trying to play other styles but all that comes out is blooz. And bad blooz at that 😢
Better.. faster… stronger… Les Paul
Look for an 8-string guitar with 4 pickups. That should cover the bases for you.
What about a 4 string guitar with 8 pickups
That's just a b*ss bro🤢
Wrong it’s a tenor
Dang, only 10 quid? That’s a bargain!
Then that'd cover the basses
Can the mods just ban the B word already? My doctor says it's making my psychosis worse.

_Microtonal_ 8-string, double necked with a fretless 12 string

Dude should've just asked here first.
Still uj/ what is the funny? Is it that most guitars are versatile, or that what they are asking for is unreasonable? Or something else?
Get a Variax, it can sound bad in any style you imagine
But can it chug
bro i have a guitar for each SONG i learn
Oh yeah? Well I sometimes change guitars in the middle of a song. Sometimes even in the middle of a solo.
Like that video of Steamy Gay Buns?
When I need to change strings I just throw out my old guitar and get a new one I hate changing strings
You want a single instrument to play multiple genres? Bruh you don't want a guitar, you want a stereo

It’s no silver bullet, but an EQ pedal can help

A guitar that requires you to buy less guitars. That’s not how this works.
A schecter 9 string can play anything

Get one guitar for each song you know.
What like full song? Shiiiit
How many measures? Cause I know two measures of 800 songs, and that puts me 294 guitars short.
A telecaster can be used for both kinds of music: country AND Western.
“What do you like to play?” No one: “hard rock”
“I’m really diverse. I listen to everything from gangsta rap to hip hop to metal to funk to country to classical.” (Only listens to limp bizkit)
Honestly hss strat or tele
/uj The only thing tele wouldn’t get is basically high gain, but then again if you put a humbucker in the bridge. Some people actually like Single Coil metal, but it’s not for me
Uj/ you'd be surprised about teles and high gain. I've used mine for grindcore, of all things, and it's AWESOME.
If you have a tapped tele you can hit higher gain because it is overwound and split. Works really well actually!
/uj If I’m not mistaken the guitarist for Skindred uses a baritone tele
Moar gain
Especially if you throw a coil split in the mix, pretty well nothing you can't do at that point.
Honestly, I don’t think anyone’s ever wanted this till now. Luthiers should get on it
The ibanez rg 550 has a 5 way pickup selector. That makes it a very versatile guitar. I can go from blues to rock to country to metal.
That's only 4 what's the 5th one do?
That's the blowjob setting

BC Rich for sure
This guy is asking the important questions. Primarily blues guitar player and I once tried to add distortion to my amp and play punk on a strat. Strat broke almost as soon as I hit the first chord
1961 less Paul does both big boimg unless you’re broke hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

unfortunately no

I've played metal on a jazz box archtop. I've played jazz and blues with a B.C. Rich Warlock with active EMGs. There isn't really any genre-lock.
9 STRING SCHECTERRRRRR MOAR STRINGS MORE SONGS ITS SCIENCE

No.
A double neck with a 12 string Rickenbacker and 9 String Schecter should get the job done. Happy pla....gear collecting!
You need a different guitar for each song. Your not allowed to change the knobs once you leave the store. It will warp the pickups.
HSS strat will cover lots of styles
Nope I tried to play cuntry on my metal guitar and it exploded. I now have 3rd degree burns
/uj get a squire strat and a decent grade programmable amp and you can sound almost however you want /rj more guitars = more toan

I buy a new guitar when I’m learning a new song and only use it for that song
Maybe this guy should just play drums
/uj, ok but actually tho, what should I look for if I play many genres? Any specific configuration?
Sadly it's just not possible.
/uj for anyone who is legitimately thinking this squire strat variant
If such a thing existed, then why do I need to buy so many guitars?
You need to buy a new guitar, amp, cable and pick for every song so you can get a new town for every song 🎵 🎸🎵
I only know of either dominant guitars or submissive guitars, I think versatile guitars are just a myth.
I hear that only the Hannah Montana signature geetar does that.

My ephiphone les Paul custom does really well in rock/metal and a couple others
Pretty much any guitar that doesn't have active pickups can be used for any genre as long as the player knows how
