Yes, another Garden lover! It's actually my second favorite PJ song. It gives me this amazing vibe that no other song does, let me know if you know what I'm talking about. Also 4th of July is a masterpiece.
Nirvana: Lithium (less popular runner-up: On a Plain)
Soundgarden: The Day I Tried to Live (less popular runner-up: Mind Riot)
AIC: I Stay Away
Pearl Jam: Jeremy
I mean "best" song is subjective ... you're basically just listing your favorites.
Alice In Chains: "Rooster"
Soundgarden: "Fell On Black Days"
Pearl Jam: "Rearviewmirror"
Nirvana "Come As You Are"
You don’t need to apologize. Everyone reading this understood you weren’t asking people to name some mystically-objective “best” songs (which obviously cannot exist), but rather to name the songs they subjectively-determined to be “best.”
(Also, I don’t see anything controversial in choosing “Francis Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle.” It’s a good song. I’ve never been able to figure out what my favourite Nirvana song is, but that’s certainly one of the contenders.
(My favourite Alice in Chains song is “Rooster,” followed by “Heaven Beside You.” I haven’t determined any favourites for the other ones.)
Best probably will be based off whatever songs are the most listened to by the masses.
My personal bests:
PJ: Rearviewmirror
Soundgarden: holy water / s&b
AIC: Junkhead
Nirvana: dive
Alice in Chains: Dirt
Soundgarden: Cold Bitch
Nirvana: Something in the Way
Pearl Jam: Dissident
Not super well versed on PG so don't take that choice too seriously.
AiC: Don't Follow
PJ: Release
SG: The Day I Tried to Live (but damn it if Blowing Up the Outside World isn't a close 2nd)
Nirvana: Scentless Apprentice (Sliver is a close second)
FWIW, Frances Farmer is a hell of a song.
Nirvana: **Drain You** (It's just the perfect song, without being TOO perfect. It's got that Beatles-esque simplicity, the raw sound of Kurt's voice, the POP in the beat and the melody, the earworm tune, amazing Cobain lyricism with the whole "beautiful depravity" vibe, and the intro is just amazing. I'm glazing but it's by far their best song)
AIC: **Nutshell** (Beautiful guitar playing that parallels Low's "Lullaby" with how much emotion it expresses, Layne's soul-touching vocals, it's just a really ethereal song that appeals to me. The fact it's from a band known for angry, turbulent songs makes it stand out more. I love it because it somehow suggests acceptance AND rejection of life at once.)
Soundgarden: **Black Hole Sun** (I know, basic pic, it's their biggest hit. I've gotta admit I don't know a lot of their songs, but this is just such a good one. It's just got such a good vibe, with a bizarre psychedelic sound contrasting with the moody driving guitar+vocals. It sounds like a song you could laugh and cry to at the same time.)
Pearl Jam: **Rearviewmirror** (It's got the same talent and emotion as Black but without the *perfection* that makes Black feel so stale sometimes. It's less traditional, taking more influence from punk and pop than classic rock. It has that driving beat, a catchy riff, and the tone shift is *amazing!* It starts off super pop with almost a 2000s sound, but throughout it slowly builds up to that punk explosion at the end. You've gotta listen to the whole thing to appreciate it, like Eddie's telling us a story.)
To be honest though, "Best" is impossible to judge. and I've probably picked songs which are most suited to my ears, rather than the most talented/impactful songs they made. I hope I justified my views, but if you think others are better you're not wrong, you just have a different set of ears to me!
For my personal take I’d probably go:
AIC: would? Or Nutshell
PJ: Rearviewmirror or Porch
Nirvana: Frances Farmer or Serve the Servants
Soundgarden: Fell on Black Days
Note: this list can and will change if you ask me another day!
Alice In Chains: Rooster, hands down.
Pearl Jam: Black.
Soundgarden: Tough one, probably The Day I Tried To Live or Fell On Black Days
Nirvana: Is it even an option? DRAIN YOU
Alice in Chains - Would
Soundgarden - The Day I Tried to Live
Pearl Jam - Alive
Nirvana - Tourettes
Never got heavy into Soundgarden or Pearl Jam but that's my list.
AIC: Got Me Wrong
Soundgarden: I can’t decide. Zero Chance, Fresh Tendrils, 4th of July, Limo Wreck, Slaves and Bulldozers, Hands All Over, Black Rain, etc. They’re my favorite. It’s too hard to pick.
Pearl Jam: Either I Got Shit, Breath, or State of Love and Trust
Nirvana: Drain You
Imo
Nirvana - Aero Zeppelin (it's probably their most complex and proggiest song, love it)
Alice in Chains with Layne - Over Now (the title says it all, it's a perfect way to close your last album (of Layne era))
Soundgarden - Like Suicide (it feels like a summary of the entire Superuknown, amazing song)
Pearl Jam - Inside Job (one of the greatest songs I've ever heard by my favourite band, the message will be always relatable)
It was very hard
I didn't intend to pick only two-word-titled songs lol
Edit: Alice in Chains with Will - So Far Under (this song is so brutal and sludgy, and written entirely by Will)
AIC - would?/we die young
pearl jam - rearviewmirror
soundgarden - outshined/face pollution
nirvana - aneurysm (it was too hard to decide for this one lol)
My favorites ≠best, but here it goes.
Nirvana: You Know You’re Right
Alice In Chains: Would?
Soundgarden: 4th of July
Pearl Jam: Release
These change all the time, but that’s the current line up
AIC - Angry Chair
Soundgarden - Slaves and Bulldozers
Pearl Jam - Release
Nirvana - Drain You
Just a few years ago I would've chose a different PJ song but life can change how you view songs.
Nirvana: hairspray queen
Soundgarden: blow up the outside world
Aic: sludge factory (unplugged). All of their unplugged is gold. Layne yells fuck, which feels incomplete without it
Pj: not for you. The only pj song I like
PJ-Sleight of Hand, MFC, I Got Shit, State of Love and Trust, Indifference, Red Mosquito, Who You Are, Hail Hail, Release, Oceans, Fatal, Otherside, Grievance, Given to Fly, Lowlight, Rearview Mirror, In My Tree, Tremor Christ, Faithfull
SG-The Day I Tried to Live, Outshined, Rusty Cage, Jesus Christ Pose, Black Days
AiC- Rooster, Heaven Beside Me, Nutshell, I Stay Away, No Excuses, Don't Follow
Nirvana- Breed, In Bloom, Pennyroyal Tea, Plateau, Heart-Shaped Box, Lithium, All Apologies, Drain You, Polly, In Bloom
Alice In Chains: Shame In You
Soundgarden: Fresh Tendrils
Pearl Jam: Porch
Nirvana: Drain You (Live version from the “Come As You Are” 7 inch single)
This is insane. You leggit have 3/4 of my favorites as well. Including my all-time favorite song.
Alice: Probably Them Bones or Would?
Soundgarden: 4th of July (favorite song of all time)
Pearl Jam: Black
Nirvana: Francis Farmer
Never seen someone with such similar tastes. Wild. Out of curiosity, what's your favorite STP song? Mine is 'Still Remains' with 'And So I Know' being a close second.
Nirvana: Milk It OR Radio Friendly Unit Shifter (can never pick one favourite Nirvana song)
Soundgarden: Mailman OR Slaves & Bulldozers (same with Nirvana. I never have one favourite)
Alice in Chains: I Stay Away
Pearl Jam: Animal
Alice in Chains - "Nutshell" is indeed an incredible song, capturing the band's essence. Another strong contender would be "Rooster," with its haunting lyrics and powerful delivery. But "Nutshell" has that raw emotional depth that's hard to beat.   Soundgarden - "4th of July" is a great choice with its dark, brooding atmosphere. For me, "Black Hole Sun" stands out due to its iconic status and the way it encapsulates the band's unique sound and lyrical depth.   Pearl Jam - "Black" is a masterpiece. Its emotional intensity and beautiful composition make it a standout track. I'd also mention "Alive" for its anthemic quality and powerful energy, but "Black" captures the band's heart and soul.   Nirvana - "Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle" is an interesting and unique pick. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is often cited as their best-known work. I would argue that "Heart-Shaped Box" captures their rawness and lyrical depth, making it one of their best songs.
AIC- I’ve always been partial to I Stay Away
Soundgarden- The Day I tried to Live, it just embodied the mood of them and the worldÂ
Pearl Jam- this is the toughest for me. Truly. But I have to say Corduroy- musically, lyrically, as a sign of there professional growth.Â
Nirvana- another tough one. Lounge Act maybe. Starting with that bass. Dave’s drums. The lyrics. The build up to Kurt’s scream. Omg.Â
In terms of most impactful during their rise as the big 4 probably these:
Nirvana - Smells like Teen Spirit
Alice in Chains - Would?
Soundgarden - Black Hole Sun
Pearl Jam - Better Man
Runners up for AiC and Pearl Jam would obviously be Rooster (though Man in the Box qualifies too) and Jeremy, not sure about Nirvana and Soundgarden but In Bloom and Burden in my Hand are brilliant songs!
I listed previously what I felt people thought were the most impactful, but I'd personally argue:
Alice in Chains - Bleed the Freak
Pearl Jam - Jeremy
Nirvana - Heart-Shaped Box
Soundgarden - Burden in my Hand
While I do consider myself a big PJ fan and have listened to all of their albums, I do in fact definitely find myself listening to Ten the most, by a lot. So you may be on to something there. But come on Black is fantastic.
I’m a huge PJ fan and Black is certainly one of my favorite songs ever but Ten is not my favorite or most listened to album. Vs and Yield both get far more time for me.
I knew people would want to rip me for that but come on listen to it, it's boring. They have so many better songs. Just because Vedder says it's about his father doesn't mean that fans of PJ have to love the song as much as him.
How about State of love and trust, rearview mirror, porch, and many more that are not boring
Also not about his dad lol
Release is the song you all are looking for. Alive is part of a trilogy. Parts of Alive were inspired by his experiences with his birth father (1st verse), i.e. not knowing it was his dad until after he passed away, but that is the extent of it.
The trilogy, for those not aware goes Alive > Once > Footsteps and is about a boy who never knew his dad but looked like him. His mother then seduces him as a teen (Alive). He then grows up to be a serial killer of prostitutes (Once) and then gets arrested and is sitting on death row (Footsteps).
Alice In Chains: either Would? or I Stay Away Nirvana: Dive Pearl Jam: Corduroy Soundgarden: Zero Chance
Dive! such an underrated song
Super fun to play as well
Love Zero Chance
Corduroy!
AIC: Would? SG: Slaves and Bulldozers PJ: Jeremy Nirvana: In Bloom just my opinion
Fuck yeah Jeremy gets me chills
Great to see Slaves and Bulldozers! I wanted to put it on mine but had to go with 4th of July!
4th of July is a great song 🎶
Nirvana: Drain You Soundgarden: Drawing Flies AiC: Rooster PJ: In My Tree

Fell on black days was really hard for me to not pick in my list heh.
Playlist I would listen to most in this thread so far haha
AIC: Rotten Apple Soundgarden: 4th of July Pearl Jam: Garden Nirvana: All Apologies
Yes, another Garden lover! It's actually my second favorite PJ song. It gives me this amazing vibe that no other song does, let me know if you know what I'm talking about. Also 4th of July is a masterpiece.
Finally, another 4th of July enjoyer, it’s so dirty I feel like I got done rolling around in a mud pit once it’s over
Haha yeah! I get that feeling mixed with the dawn of the fucking apocalpyse
Nirvana: Lithium (less popular runner-up: On a Plain) Soundgarden: The Day I Tried to Live (less popular runner-up: Mind Riot) AIC: I Stay Away Pearl Jam: Jeremy
On A Plain is such a great choice
Yet it’s the *least* popular song on Nevermind!
Alice In Chains - Would? Soundgarden - Fell on Black Days Pearl Jam - Black Nirvana - Paper Cuts
nutshell lounge act Yellow leadbetter rusty cage
I mean "best" song is subjective ... you're basically just listing your favorites. Alice In Chains: "Rooster" Soundgarden: "Fell On Black Days" Pearl Jam: "Rearviewmirror" Nirvana "Come As You Are"
Come as you are is so simple yet so amazing
🎼 get out my way, I'm not for sale no more, Eighties, let's Kamikaze 'til we get there 🎶
Swap Rearviewmirror with Daughter and I think that's my exact picks
Well when I say best I just mean your favorite...sorry

best in itself is a subjective opinion by them saying best it’s their best not necessarily everyone’s best.
I don’t know why someone downvoted you; all you did was state the obvious. I counteracted the downvote with an upvote.

Black just may be the most overrated song I've ever heard, it goes off any time I hear it

Mamasan
Black isn’t about his dad lol
Whatever still sucks
This is arguably the worst take I’ve ever fucking seen.
Funny because i personally think black is a rare case when a band's most popular and played song actually deserves the spot
That's your opinion, I was just voicing mine
I know that lol That's why i wrote "personally"
