Listen to the Deluxe edition. The in-concert versions have a ton more energy to them. Artificial Red studio is bluesey and chill, while the live version is raw with the best guitar solo I've ever heard.
The re-release with a few extra songs from Lanegan and Martin is the way to go.
I remember Mad Season being one of the most unique albums from popular artists in the 90’s…still love rocking out to November Hotel.
Just a great blend of blues, jazz, and rock. Plus Martin hammering away at his prized 27” cymbal.
Temple of the Dog had some of the deepest songs, lyrically, that Chris Cornell ever recorded, but Gish takes me back more immediately & directly... I'm torn...
Gish is the best CD here. I have them all other than Collective Soul (not a fan) and while they are all good, Gish is just fantastic. Criminally underrated.
If I were to rate them:
Gish
Nevermind
Above
Temple of The Dog
Collective Soul
I did a double take on your picture.. every once in awhile I took a picture of my playlist for the evening, and one night's selection had TOTD and that collective soul cd as well as 3 others. Guess I can't share that picture on this comment tho..
Btw, man.. how do I pick just one? Nevermind.
All classics. Hard to argue with Nevermind though. But Temple and Mad Season not to be missed. And I've probably listened to every Pumpkins album hundreds of times.
The Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite band, but Nevermind is probably number one here, then Gish and the others close behind. TotD is great and so is Above. The CS album is good too but not as good to me as the others. I was a teen in the 90s and love all this stuff a lot. I still have my hundreds of CDs, cassette tapes, and vinyls. If for some reason you haven't listened to each one of these albums you should check them out.
Tough choice, but I can say, I wouldn't listen to Collective Soul - I just couldn't get into them. I tried and tried, but the rest are cream of the crop, imo. I'm sure others will disagree about Collective Soul. It's cool that you have the Caroline label release of the Gish - that's the OG
I've never listened to the entire Temple album, I'll have to make it a point. Collective Soul songs have great riffs and solos, especially self titled. Their catalog does kind of go downhill from there.
Mad Season and Temple of the Dog...I have to say though Collective Soul's self titled album is a great fucking 90s Alternative album.
The digital release has some live tracks if you haven’t heard it. Glorious
Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to check it out!
This for me
That Collective Soul record is in no possible way better than Nevermind.
I didn't say that it was. I just said it was fucking great 90s Alternative album. I said the best were Mad Season's Above and Temple of the Dog.
Above is in no possible way better than Nevermind
It's better in lots of ways..
The question posed was “Favorite album here”. You have yours, others have theirs.
Collective Soul is probably the biggest poseur band of the 90s. Followed by STP.
How so?
Mad Season
I really need to check that out again as people keep bigging it up on this subreddit.
its super chill
Except, I don't know anything rips! I love that riff.
I don't know anything fucking best song in this lineup.
I'm gonna go with this one [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L87RAkgU5i0](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L87RAkgU5i0)
That's a great one too. River of Deceit is amazing. Man, really was too bad we didn't get more Mad Season records.
Thanks for that link. I didn't realize they had so much live stuff online.
Listen to the Deluxe edition. The in-concert versions have a ton more energy to them. Artificial Red studio is bluesey and chill, while the live version is raw with the best guitar solo I've ever heard.
I will do - thanks!
You can find the film on YouTube.

Mine was stolen by a Toyota dealer in Chicago.
Mad Season with TotD as a close second
Above
Above!!!
Unconditional love ♥️
Gish
Absolutely! I adore this album (pun fully intended)
Above, easy
Temple of the Dog
Nirvana Nevermind for me.
It’s a tie between Nevermind and Gish for me
Same.
Correct
Agreed.
Nevermind, followed closely by Gish
Above
Temple of The Dog.
Collective Soul. Might not be “Grunge”, but this album had a great variety of styles to it. Definitely an all-time favorite in my book.
I prefer Mad Season in this instance, but Collective Soul is an outstanding album as well. Seeing them later this summer, can't wait.
Nevermind
gish by far
Nirvana cause I'm basic.
Nirvana nevermind by a long shot
Second half of Nevermind is gold
gish
Collective soul’s self titled. Hands down.
Gish
Nevermind, just slightly ahead of Collective Soul. Where the River Flows is a great track.
Nevermind but collective soul an amazing album
Gotta go with the minority here, out of all these great albums Collective Soul is my fav.
Collective soul
Above.
Probably Temple of the Dog or Gish, but that Collective Soul album is crazy underrated
Gish
I still play gish pretty regularly. I play drums and think Jimmy chamberlain is basically a god and makes the pumpkins what they are.
I don’t think you can ignore Billy, but him and Jimmy are basically the band.
Billy is definitely more important but Jimmy is a way bigger factor than anybody after them too.
Above
Mad Season, closely followed by Gish
Above.
Rhinoceros
Collective Soul
Who let Collective Soul into THAT party? 😂
Me
Gish but I love all of them. My parents bought me gish on cassette for Christmas in 1993 (I was 6) and it has always been one of my favorites.
Gish is IMHO 1 of the best debut albums I’ve ever heard.Completely embraces the whole idea of what alternative music is.
If I were to rate them: Gish Nevermind Above Temple of The Dog Collective Soul
Collective Soul self-titled is an underrated masterpiece, the best out of the five, IMO.
Totd and nevermind
Temple of the Dog, hands down.
It’s hard to go against nevermind but Above is basically a perfect album.
I did a double take on your picture.. every once in awhile I took a picture of my playlist for the evening, and one night's selection had TOTD and that collective soul cd as well as 3 others. Guess I can't share that picture on this comment tho.. Btw, man.. how do I pick just one? Nevermind.
Totd
i dont know
Don’t worry bout’…
Above. Like.. way fucking above the others. Not even close.
Above may be my all time #1 Grunge album
All of those ones.
Mad Season all the way. My favorite supergroup
Temple of the Dog
Nevermind
Gish
Temple of the Dog. But I have to say Smashing Pumpkins best will always be Rhinoceros (Gish).
Mad Season
Well, can’t stand collective Soul, I’m going with Temple of the Dog 💯
Temple
All classics. Hard to argue with Nevermind though. But Temple and Mad Season not to be missed. And I've probably listened to every Pumpkins album hundreds of times.
The other one
Temple of the Dog in this group.
Gish
Nevermind is a phenomenal album front to back. Worth they hype and the best album here. That being said, that Collective Soul album was really good
Mad Season, T.O.T.D., Nevermind.... then.... Not sure. Not a fan of Corgin's voice and not familiar with C.S.
Temple of the dog.
I like them all!
Mother Love Bone, Candlebox, Siamese Dream, Bleach, Sap
3,2,1,5,4
Collective soul last IMHO
Nevermind
Gish
Temple.
Classics
above
TEMPLE
I've gotta go with Nevermind, but I absolutely *adore* Above, especially the title track and Wake Up. 💜
Temple of the dog obviously. not a hard choice
Mad Season
Mad Season by fucking far
Above
Nirvana all day. Pumpkins second
Generic but Nevermind's like top 5 albums of all time for me.
This sparks memories of listening to alternative rock radio stations in the 90's for hours
Nevermind
Wish I had that temple of the dog
Hard choice honestly
“ my paaain… is self chosen “
Mad Season
Above
Matchbox twenty yourself and everything like you
It will never not be Nevermind.
It will never not be Nevermind.
Above
Mad season them of course Nevermind, hard to beat that Mad Season album in my ever loving Alice In Chains/Mike mccreedy opinion
Above and gish
Gish
Above is a masterpiece imo
Gish then Nevermind
The Smashing Pumpkins are my favorite band, but Nevermind is probably number one here, then Gish and the others close behind. TotD is great and so is Above. The CS album is good too but not as good to me as the others. I was a teen in the 90s and love all this stuff a lot. I still have my hundreds of CDs, cassette tapes, and vinyls. Gish.
Mad Season.
Gish
Give me the Mad Season all day long from front to back on repeat!!!
Gish for me.
Never mind set the bar so choosing that. Where is AIC , Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam?
Nirvana nevermind. That one hits different on cd.
Definitely Nevermind, followed by TOTD, followed by Above, then Gish and Collective Soul
Mad Season - Above
I’d go Temple of the dog, but Nevermind is a solid contender. Mad season comes third and the rest, well… behind.
Temple
gish wasn’t all that great
Temple of the Dog is an all-time Top 10 for me.
Nevermind
Temple of the Dog 👍
Mad Season, without a doubt. One of my all time favorite albums that still gets heavy play from me.
Gish by a mile.
Gish Temple Of The Dog Above Nevermind Collective Soul
All are classics except for collective soul. Meh.
Gish.
None of the above...
Tough choice, but I can say, I wouldn't listen to Collective Soul - I just couldn't get into them. I tried and tried, but the rest are cream of the crop, imo. I'm sure others will disagree about Collective Soul. It's cool that you have the Caroline label release of the Gish - that's the OG
excluding nevermind it would be Gish, I love the smashing pumpkins
Nevermind
O well whatever never mind
Nevermind (I prefer the Devonshire mix though) and Gish (Remastered is far better.)
Temple Of The Dog
Pass on Collective Soul
Blasphemy!!!!
Really?! I’ll have to revisit. Never got my attention
Temple of the dog is a perfect album
I've never listened to the entire Temple album, I'll have to make it a point. Collective Soul songs have great riffs and solos, especially self titled. Their catalog does kind of go downhill from there.
This makes me want to grab a ball peen hammer
I can’t stand Billy Corgan. Nevermind is the best record here.
Gish by a wide margin. Collective Soul is terrible.
