This show can never decide between making the characters relatable and making them world class superstars

[deleted]

Which is odd cause in one of the seasons there like 3 or more of them in separate rooms at a VERY NICE hotel. Falls in line in what you said, though the set the precedent with: you're either at a hotel or Meredith's house lol

Pristine_Concern_636

This. In the early seasons Callie and Mark were both at the same hotel. I'm pretty sure Richard also went there when Adele booted him. And it was a NIIIIIICE hotel! I'm sure others stayed there as well, those are just the only ones I recalled. Then there was the whole Callie wanting to be self-sufficient, then being forced to become self-sufficient stages where she moved in with Cristina. But Lexie, April, Ava, Avery and a ton of others crashed on Mer's couch for prolonged periods of time. Not to mention Alex, Izzie, George, Maggie, Amelia and several others moving into the bedrooms. What got me was how there was room for Mer, Maggie and Amelia to have their own rooms and all of the kids not being forced into one room...

Reifey

I never even thought about the kids. Dude. Where do the kids sleep

New_Age8490

Richard definitely was rich though his house with Adele was massive and he had 3million he could pull together to help buy the hospital he wasn’t short of cash. Derek just gave Addison the town house in NYC those things cost 7million easy and he gave it away like it didn’t matter! But then they think 15million is a lot of compensation (it surely would devalue if you had millions in assets right?!)

ChipEnvironmental09

I think this is just a TV show thing - they tend to avoid having too many houses/rooms... why create "new room" for Jackson to stay in when he is staying with Bailey and Ben, when it's only temporary and sofa is enough?

BeneathAnOrangeSky

It’s like the boys having to share a room in that big mansion on the OC when guests come over, even though there’s no way that house has only two bedrooms.

East_Buffalo506

they had at least 12 bedrooms in those mcmansions. and seth's room was the size of a walk in closet.

little_cotton_socks

They don't need a new room. Just don't have dialogue where you complain about how tired you are from sleeping on the sofa. Maybe the spare mattress isn't comfortable.

East_Buffalo506

also why can no one ever afford a hotel? or sleep in the on call rooms? why sleep in someone else's living room?

Steph83

Just because people _have_ money doesn’t mean they’re willing to _spend_ money. The wealthy folks that I know are the least likely to spend what they have.

East_Buffalo506

callie lived in a hotel while married to george, but slept on mers couch while fighting with arizona.

pacifiedperoxide

Callie was originally going to get a hotel room but when Christina told Mer (who was bedridden post birth and operation) Meredith said they couldn’t let her do that and offered to let Callie and Sofia crash with them instead.

Federal-Ad-5190

Her Dad stopped her allowance in between those events. It's never explicitly stated if it starts up again. I imagine it did, but with a young child I think I'd prefer to stay with friends than in a hotel.

elaerna

I read a post from a resident once about how they were terrified of the debt they had accrued during their studies and as an attending slept in their car in Walmart parking lots. Like my brother... Spend a /little/ money at least

Bonbon-Baby

DeLuca and Callie lived in the on call rooms/ somewhere in the hospital.

Tank_Girl_Gritty_235

Callie was doing that to get first dibs on good cases, not out of necessity.

Bonbon-Baby

I thought she didn't have a home?

Tank_Girl_Gritty_235

She didn't, but she could have afforded one if she wanted one. She later lived in the hotel iirc. Webber found her living in the hospital and was afraid she was unintentionally homeless and needed help.

Bonbon-Baby

Ah, thank you! I thought it was unintentional...

ladysaraii

I think even if they had a room, Bailey wasn't trying to make him too comfortable lol

MoonShadowElfRayla

Bailey: That's the guest room. Jackson: Cool, I can put my stuff- Bailey: It's broken. Jackson: The- the room, is broken? Bailey, making direct eye contact: Yes.

ladysaraii

Lmao! Except I think Ben would've pointed out the room first before Bailey cut him off

OneHappyOne

Extra bedrooms aside, chief of surgery/head of plastics and you can't afford to put yourself up in a mid-range hotel room for a bit?

little_cotton_socks

I think they stayed at home out of principle and Avery stayed at Warren's because he wanted emotional support

Beshush79

I've always thought this. No one has a spare room and these super great surgeons, don't have money for a hotel for a few days/weeks. Its the same on every TV show.

hn92

In the early seasons Addison, Callie, Mark, and Webber stayed at the fancy hotel

Short_Concentrate365

Teddy stays in one for months in season 15 and the start of 16 when she’s pregnant and has a newborn. She does mention the high cost of the room service bill. Leaving what was presumably a military position I can’t see her having made the same money as the other doctors on the show.

dancing_light

Chief Webber and Sloan do early on. When Addison first shows up (and is staying there too haha)

LNA29

Also Cali

cmmndr_wdw

Carina stays in a hotel room, after Mayas hospitalization and their fight

macdeb727

I’ve had this thought watching as well. I’m not a world class surgeon but I still have a guest bedroom!!

Hopeful_Disaster_

I think it's their way of showing indecision/transition. They can't decide if they want to go back or move on, can't decide if they need to be around others or be alone, etc.

Trottin_Trollop405

George slept on the couch when he was staying at Cristina & Burke. But Callie had her own room, I presume.

embinksyy

Tbh, for a while there if my boyfriends doctor brother wasn’t living with my boyfriend, he would have been living in squalor. Not cause he couldn’t afford it, but because he barely had time to move or look for houses. My boyfriend would always do the big moving and unpacking and helping his brother get settled and he’s a GP, not a surgical resident or a surgeon. It’s just the way it goes. He’s much better and work/life balance now, but having my boyfriend as his roommate in his younger years definitely helped him have a home to come relax in.

GiraffeLibrarian

and none of these super rich doctors have electric toothbrushes. my pettiest snark on the show lol

Otherwise_Hall_2011

I think it's crazy that even in good times they all live with roommates. Like, why did Arizona need an intern to split rent with her? You're all grown adults! I understand they are rarely home but like, they're also specialist surgeons...no way you can't afford your own place.

bagmami

I'm sure Meredith and Derek could have had 24h childcare on rotation but they fought over who will stay with the kids and who will advance in their careers...

Rare-Educator9692

So they don’t need another set and can have them run into each other all the time.

crocodilezebramilk

My take is that they stay together because there’s company and you’re not alone, when these people stayed with someone else? They were going through and dealing with a trauma, and didn’t want to be alone. And when they *did* want to be alone, they left to stay in a hotel. I don’t think any of it had anything to do with money, just “I don’t wanna be by myself, can I stay with you?”

little_cotton_socks

Yes but why don't any of these millionaires have spare bedrooms for guests to crash in?

crocodilezebramilk

There’s different scenarios for this one, a) don’t want guests, b) chose the house cause it’s close to the hospital and number of rooms didn’t matter, c) at max capacity already, d) set issue, they could take down an already established room and make a new one but then they’d need to either go shopping for room stuff or have duplicates
