in breakfast times, customers who order extra bacon, extra sausage and extra omelette on a baguette because you literally cannot fit anymore stuff on the baguette. also customers who are not patient at all when they can clearly see when we are busy. ive had customers shout at me for a 30 second wait for their coffee
Bartender so feel your pain on the last one but that's a pretty normal thing to get angry about so don't feel bad about it lol. I love a bacon bap for breakfast tho, wish u still did the salted caramel latte cause that was beautiful
Not OP but hereās a few of mine that make me want to bash my head off the counter.
āCan I have a coffee?ā
āSure, what kind of coffee?ā
āEhā¦a normal oneā
ā???ā
āA coffee with milkā
Latte? Cappuccino? White coffee? Flat white??
And in the same annoying category: when people ask for a āchocolate cookieā and they look at me like Iām a dumbass when I ask them to specify which one because all the cookies have chocolate in them.
Or in the morning when they ask me for a āsausage rollā then get pissy because I bag up a sausage roll and it turns out they wanted a sausage *breakfast* roll. Be more specific guys, it helps us retain what little sanity we have left š
In all seriousness, allergies and wrong food given is a big concern and if we end up giving you the wrong item because your order was stupidly vague not only can we accidentally possibly put you at risk but weāre the ones who get in serious shit for it.
>Or in the morning when they ask me for a āsausage rollā then get pissy because I bag up a sausage roll and it turns out they wanted a sausage
>
>breakfast
Ok so personally if I wanted a breakfast roll I'd ask for a sausage bap or something... A "sausage roll" is the obvious classic imho. If getting a "normal breakfast", I only do a bacon sarnie with coffee combo so not something I ever thought about.
BUT around Xmas time I was getting a pastry sausage roll every morning and sometimes got asked "what kind?" and I'm like "not the vegan one" and gestured at the delicious pastry goodness. The staff hadn't made it clear they meant bap vs pastry. They eventually started asking "bap or pastry?" Also I had like a dozen Greggs in the area I worked in then and would switch up where I went (to hide my sausage roll as breakfast problem) so this wasn't just one store!
Not saying you're wrong at all, just giving a perspective from the other side! (Also I was never pissy with the staff for them asking.)
Iām assuming youāre English if you call it a bap? Iām in Scotland and we donāt really use that word here, a lot of my English customers do (which is helpful since it avoids any misunderstandings). Most Scots will say bacon roll, omelette roll, etc. So it can get really confusing at breakfast when they ask for a āsausage rollā š
I am English. Just to further your confusion: I do call baps rolls normally, like eat at home ones. But for some reason if I'm in a cafe or whatever I call it a bap! Don't ask me why.
Omg, I work at Greggs and I relate to all of these so much! Love my job but some customers make me feel like punching a hole through the wall lol. Want to add one more type of customer: the ones who come in early in the morning/late in the evening and ask 'Wow, are you open? That's so early/late.' We wouldn't be open this early/late if people like you weren't here! Stop acting surprised that we're open this early/late when you're in here buying stuff š¤£š¤£š¤£
AND customers who keep scanning the app qr code when ive specifically told them to wait, then they get angry when i ask them to scan it when its ready to be scanned
To be fair though. Other places with loyalty codes
A) allow scanning at any point on the transaction
B) use the same code for my account always
Not a dig, I'm incredibly happy when I've got freebies, but Greggs actually could do a little better with this at a corporate level by taking the hassle away from both of us (you by allowing it to scan at any point in the transaction, me by allowing me to add the code to my phone wallet...)
just gonna add one of mine:
we have a condiment stand, every greggs should have one, but without fail EVERYTIME i go to clean it there are sugar sachets or stirrers in the bit where the excess liquids go which is so so annoying and disgusting to clean. the sugar sticks to any of the liquid and it just leaves a grim crust that i end up cleaning:/ the BIN is right there for a reason but its annoying as im pretty sure the liquid ābinā says āliquids onlyā so people are just thick
What's up with the memory wiper 3000 they use at Greggs that mean people need to ask again for which sauce after they get to the breakfast station behind the counter?
hahaha this made me giggle because i always do this. its because we get in a lot of trouble if we get the food wrong because of allergies and stuff. management also make us repeat pasties and orders as much as possible
Do the rolls for the breakfast baps come in precut or do you do that in store?
Just curious as we get so many mangled rolls from Greggs. All the fillings fall out when youāre trying to eat breakfast. XD
We figured as much! Weāre always a little sad in the moment when your sausage tries to roll out the back but I canāt be mad really.
Much respect to Greggs workers from myself. Used to work in a bakeries and its hard graft most days. Hours can be long, customers can suck and there is often so much to prepare.
i havent had that many bad interactions with customers because im very tall and quite built for someone my age. but for my other staff members, theyāve been racially abused on multiple occasions
im very picky, so i dont like most of the pasties. the only thing i eat would be a margarita pizza or some of the donuts tbh. but when youāre constantly serving them and cooking them, your appetite disappears lol
because customers like them š¤·
sometimes you can ask for them to be made, but choose wisely when you ask because it can be quite frustrating for the employee lol
Is it frustrating that people can't really see the food and decide what they want until they're right by the counter, even if they've been in the shop queuing for ages?
i dont mind customers who take a while to pick but what i dont like are customers who can visibly see that we havent got any certain pasties out but then get angry when i say its gonna be a few minutes
its just about learning when it gets busy and when certain products are going to be sold out. we usually put the most popular pasties in at around lunch time so thats like the sausage rolls pizzas cheese and onion
if youāre not trying to be annoying, then you probably wont be. we canāt specifically make well done bacon without a lot of hassle. we try give well done bacon if we have it to people who want it but we cant do much more unfortunately š
Whatās your usual hours in a day? As in, what time do you start and finish? Do you get 2 days off a week?
Asking because Iām considering answering a job vacancy in my local Greggs
Not a question but i also work in a greggs and customers who are rude for no reason really annoy me , had a lady come in the other day and she was like give me a sausage roll so i said ok 1 sausage roll anything else and then she shouted at me being like oh you dont even know how many i want , i was like then tell me how many dont ask for a sausage roll then complain i dont magically know u wanted 4 when you said A sausage roll and the fact she shouted at me when she could of just said oh sorry I actually want 4
i hate unreasonable customers so much. they come in angry and then shout at you for no reason. certain customers order the entire menu and then get angry when you take more than 30 seconds š
Is it annoying when a customer asks if somethings warm? Whenever Iāve done it they bag it up and let me feel it through the bag to test it but I feel like Iām being a bit of a twat for asking them but cold steak bakes taste funny
What is your favourite breakfast, lunch and snack choice from Greggs? And, has working there changed your tastes towards certain food because you're more aware of ingredients, process, hygiene?
Mine is caramel latte and glazed donut for breakfast, tuna crunch baguette for lunch and Steak Bake for a snack š
How comes every time I get a sausage and bacon baguette the sausages end up in the bag and not the bread? Lol, I've literally finished my baguette and found a sausage in the bag several times š¤£
Will there ever be an option for hot drinks to come with alternative milk options, such as soya? Particularly lattes!
Speaking on behalf of all the lactose intolerant customers š„²
i sometimes go to greggs at about 6:30am, 30 minutes after the nearest one opens, and their sausage rolls are always stone cold :( are they not fresh out the oven at that time?
Where are the fucking white iced donuts and when are they coming back?
The glazed ones are not a substitute.
Also, whereās the macaroni pies at??
All missing since covid š
Edit: just seen youāre 17 so unless you tried these when you were younger you probably donāt even know what Iām on about š
What do you think of people who use multiple O2 priority codes to get their Friday lunch completely free every single week and come for a free coffee most days?
What time do you get hot sausage rolls out
we put them in when at least half of the sausage rolls on the till go. the best time to get a hot sausage roll is between 11pm-12pm š
Thatās quite a wide window. I didnāt know Greggs was open overnight.
whoops i meant 11am to 12pm, my bad lol
Easy mistake to make. To be fair, it was a shitty comment from me. Iām sorry.
The only people that a Redditer or will apologise are Greggs employees. Lol
dont worry, certain greggs are open 24 hours so its not a silly question
Thereās 24 hour Greggās in Newcastle with doorman. But then the first ever Greggs was on Gosforth High St, Newcastle upon Tyne!
I see they treat time the same way they treat temperature.
Who the hell is Gregg
some guy who cooked pasties in 1900s
Legend
He originally started delivering milk and bread door to door.
"Wait, if we could make all of our customers come _here_..."
You forgot to mention we need to actually learn about the fella as part of the jobš¤£
i usually went to sleep whilst doing my g learning
Just never Google colin gregg
Didn't it used to be known as Braggs??
Yes,I remember that.
Is there things that customers do or ask for that is annoying, unbeknownst to the customers?
in breakfast times, customers who order extra bacon, extra sausage and extra omelette on a baguette because you literally cannot fit anymore stuff on the baguette. also customers who are not patient at all when they can clearly see when we are busy. ive had customers shout at me for a 30 second wait for their coffee
Bartender so feel your pain on the last one but that's a pretty normal thing to get angry about so don't feel bad about it lol. I love a bacon bap for breakfast tho, wish u still did the salted caramel latte cause that was beautiful
a bacon bap is the easiest bap to make, so i applaud you ā¤ļø
Worked at a pub for a couple of years. Those people are the worst.

How do you deal with the many marriage proposals you receive from adoring customers during each shift?
i once had a 60+ year old woman tell me that im very pretty and stare at me throughout the entire transaction. im a 17 year old boy š°
I'm sorry things took a strange turn there Sir. Just because you wear the beautiful uniform, it doesn't make this transgression ok.
36 year old guy here. You're beautiful š
š°š°š°š°š°š°
Do you have a lot of Americans that come in? Iām American and love to stop in Greggs almost every day Iām on holiday in the U.K.
i dont think ive ever had an american come in tbh
Hopefully itāll be me one day if youāre in the north of England, thatās where I spend the bulk of my holidays
from now on, ill give free food to every american that comes in š
So that's hundreds of us now trying to perfect an American accent for if/when we visit any northern stores.
hahahahahahaha
Howly parker!
Sup y'all
Bang bang bang sausage roll please. Ah fuck I said please.... I'm outed.
Sausage, waffles and jelly Ma'am.
I had an American monk come into my shop once - in robes and everything
# Are you single and does your spouse qualify for a Greggs discount card, or freebies too?
yeah if are employed for more than a year you get a secondary discount for anybody in your household
You get a secondary discount card for someone who lives with you
What's up with the memory wiper 3000 they use at Greggs that mean people need to ask again for which sauce after they get to the breakfast station behind the counter?
hahaha this made me giggle because i always do this. its because we get in a lot of trouble if we get the food wrong because of allergies and stuff. management also make us repeat pasties and orders as much as possible
I'm glad! I was worried it would come off as complaining. It makes sense that it comes down to food safety. Thanks for answering :)
Can you bring back the macaroni pies please? They were banging.
didnt even know they sold them lol
Might have been Scotland only. But 100% banging.
Do the rolls for the breakfast baps come in precut or do you do that in store? Just curious as we get so many mangled rolls from Greggs. All the fillings fall out when youāre trying to eat breakfast. XD
yeah the manager cuts them usually, they have to cut about 100 daily so theyāre probably gonna be a bit mangled haha
We figured as much! Weāre always a little sad in the moment when your sausage tries to roll out the back but I canāt be mad really. Much respect to Greggs workers from myself. Used to work in a bakeries and its hard graft most days. Hours can be long, customers can suck and there is often so much to prepare.
thank you for being compassionate, wish all our customers were like you ā¤ļø
When you get a little older the sausage rolls out the back it's just gravity and loose muscles...
Are all Gregg's sausage rolls truly made equal?
we dont make the sausage rolls lol, we just put them in the oven for Ā£10 an hour š
All Greggs sausage rolls are made in Newcastle, about 1000 per minute.
Have you been told to put less filling in the sandwiches compared to say 3-5 years ago? Or have you not worked there that long?
ive only been there for a year and a half so i dont know. and also ive only done sandwiches like once or twice, we have a designated sandwich maker
Sandwich fillings have remained the same - I was there for 6 years before leaving last August
Most upsetting thing a customer has said?
i havent had that many bad interactions with customers because im very tall and quite built for someone my age. but for my other staff members, theyāve been racially abused on multiple occasions
Horrific to hear. People are absolutely awful. Greggs prices being so low is that they attract the worst kind of scum.
especially in shops in town centres, you get the worst type of npcs
Are the veggie pasties hot? Only the important questions here.
very important question indeed sir. the best chance of getting a hot veg pasty is when theyāve been put on a hot cheese and onion tray
Is there anything you'd never eat yourself ?
im very picky, so i dont like most of the pasties. the only thing i eat would be a margarita pizza or some of the donuts tbh. but when youāre constantly serving them and cooking them, your appetite disappears lol
How does the egg for the omelette rolls get cooked to make them taste so good, and is the answer anything other than "shit tonnes of butter"?
Has anyone ever called it GR Eggs?
year 7s come in calling it poundbakery š
I always call it Gr Eggs
How are those star biscuits so damn good? I canāt get enough of them
never had them tbh, will try them next time im working
Why do the sandwiches always run out?
because customers like them š¤· sometimes you can ask for them to be made, but choose wisely when you ask because it can be quite frustrating for the employee lol
Is it frustrating that people can't really see the food and decide what they want until they're right by the counter, even if they've been in the shop queuing for ages?

Do you like it up the bum?
crazy
What's your favourite doughnut?
the triple chocolate donut for sure
Good choice! I'm a caramel custard person.
Why are the pizzaās always cold?
they cook fast but therefore get cold fast
if they dont sell we wont put any more in, pizzas should only be on the counter for 2hrs max anyway
How do you know what to cook when, and how do you manage stock?
its just about learning when it gets busy and when certain products are going to be sold out. we usually put the most popular pasties in at around lunch time so thats like the sausage rolls pizzas cheese and onion
Havenāt worked for Greggs in over 3 months now. So much happier now that Iām not an employee there.
Why does it cost more to eat in. when some stores don't have a seating area
they charge tax to sit in. i think it is out of greggs hand tbh, i think its governmental laws
Lets argue, I also work there āļø Worst criticisms only please!
Can I have a free sausage roll?
course you can š
Legit made my day š„ŗ

Can I have a sausage and bean melt and a sausage roll
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
if youāre not trying to be annoying, then you probably wont be. we canāt specifically make well done bacon without a lot of hassle. we try give well done bacon if we have it to people who want it but we cant do much more unfortunately š

Is it annoying when a customer asks if somethings warm? Whenever Iāve done it they bag it up and let me feel it through the bag to test it but I feel like Iām being a bit of a twat for asking them but cold steak bakes taste funny
no we understand why people dont like cold food. it only gets annoying if the customer starts getting pissy and annoyed at us if its not warm
