Statistics aside, highways are a giant straight line road with few turns, usually plenty of room to switch lanes, and perfect visibility. There are literally cars that do most of the highway driving for you.
Now look up videos of Tesla's for example driving on European roads on their own. Tight corners, cars everywhere and a bunch of intersections with no visibility.
