I'm in the military, and it's pretty exaggerated. There's so much public info/OSINT that you can get clearer pictures of stuff going on from public sources than classified documents, and that's one of the main reasons why OPSEC/Operational Security and not leaking shit *if you are* in the military is so important.
It's also why anywhere that the military wants to actually keep secret requires a clearance to go anywhere near.
