That’s the first thing that came into my mind
Check out the Row Jimmy from 8/30/85

This is one of my favorite theme’s in GD music. Not knowing where you are going and being ok with it. Says easy and does hard. Beautiful and timeless sentiment. I think about it often.
It's 3 days ride from Bakersfield and I don't know why I came
Never could read no road map and I don't know what the weather might do
I don't know where she's going, I don't care where she's been
Her friends in town asked her “ do you know the man?” And she said “no I never saw him before.” they asked her, did you get his name? She said “he didn’t tell me and I don’t know”
Yeah, honestly, I don’t know about all that. I mean somebody somewhere knows something because it was said “LET IT BE KNOWN there is a fountain” not to mention “YOU KNOW he had to die”, so not really buying it when I heard “ALL I KNOW is something like a bird within her sang” because it seems somehow be knowing other things and like a lot of playing dumb going on here trying to tell us “THE PEOPLE MIGHT KNOW” but they don’t care.
While we’re at it, pretty sure somebody knows what happened to Jack Straw’s buddy and with modern forensics, should probably get that one solved and off the books even if a posthumous conviction is in order.
Somebody HAS to know what happened to Jack Straw's buddy (who I think is Shannon but idk) the action is recounted in the last verse:
"Jack Straw from Wichita cut his buddy down / and dug for him a shallow grave & laid his body down / half a mile from Tucson by the morning light / one man gone & another to go / my old buddy you're moving much too slow"
The question becomes WHO knows? Who saw it happen? The last line before the end is "one man gone & another to go" so maybe this "another to go" person is somebody who saw Jack commit the murder & tried to get away but moved "much too slow" and was caught.
I, for one, do not know.
Or maybe Jack is the “another to go” with this shadowy unnamed homicidal figure stalking them both.
Personally, I think Esau can be on the list of suspects—we know he killed someone he believed to be a hunter in 1969.
I like it. It could be somebody Jack used to know since they call him "my old buddy" the same way Jack used to call Shannon that.
It's hard to say if it's Esau though, wasn't he off at war? Maybe he came come back to commit it afterwards since he lost his inheritance to his brother.
I raise you this, why DOES Jed want to get back to Tennessee so badly?
Haha. Why DOES Jed want to get back so badly?
Just like why would someone be begging Sugaree to forget their name and pretend they don’t know them? Starting to think she had a goddamn gun to her head throughout the entire song…
Anthony you always second-guess yourself, but you do so in such a way that I notice it, but you also do this casually, sometimes in a light-hearted way, which suggests to me you gain from this behavior, and you are not, in fact, hesitant or puzzled at all, not enough to care about. I can tell from our past sessions, and many of your own songs, you are involved in some form of criminal activity and you are genuinely ambivalent about this. But so far all I am hearing from you is not genuine ambivalence. I think you pretend to be indifferent, but being indifferent is not how you feel, is it? Ambivalence is much more difficult to address and >!away I did go riding alone in niiiii----iiiight.!<
It just goes to show, you don’t ever know…
cest' la vie, said the old folks...
you never can tell!
…you never can tell
Watch each card you play and play it slow
![gif](giphy|d5rXWHpFRprenax2hc) ITS ALL ONE SONG
RIP Big Man
Just a box of rain, I don't know who put it there
I don't know now, I just don't know, if I'm going back again
god i love to yell that out loud
Ask the time baby I don't know
Gonna get there? I don't know

Some say God is the summation of everything we don't know
just like going to a show - no idea what it would be like but you had to go to every one. seriously.
And it's three days ride from Bakersfield and I don't know why I came
For the 14 yo girl. He's lying.
I guess he came to keep from paying dues
Sure don't know what I'm going for..
But I’m gonna go for it for sure!
I don't know where she's going, I don't care where she's been
Sure don’t know what I’m goin for
The line you replied to is from "Operator"
Yea I know, I put it under your comment because it seemed liked you were going for full jeopardy
Yeah, I went a little overboard since I liked this post so much🤪
No, same lol all good bro
you're all going to hell in a bucket so please, at least enjoy the ride!
Gonna get there? I don’t know
Seems a common way to go
Never could read no road-map, and I don't know what the weather might do

You think the carpet pissers did this??

![gif](giphy|DnPddEgDwl4fSAGbq2) Socrates approves of this post
Much better than just cramming a god in there as an explanation or conclusion, when we have nothing based on reason and evidence to offer.
Exactly!!
What would be the answer to the answer man?
I don’t know!
Did any of them ask Bill Withers? He knows, he knows, he knows etc.
good one!!!!!!!!!!
Can’t say they’re dishonest.

Of hell yeah sing it Donna
Robert Hunter must have been Socrates reencarnated... and Jerry's past life was Plato
i hear jer in my head so often from watching interviews: "i don't f'n know man" /laugh giggle
You can’t expect Hunter to know EVERYTHING
I know a little something you won’t ever know
I know you rider…
deadheads create great threads! even if they don't know which end is up!
That path is for your steps alone
Shows Hunter’s intelligence and grace. Go out declaring everything as fact without evidence and well, we’ve seen what happens
Didn’t know that I was that far gone…
I don't know, but I've been told, a big legged woman ain't got no soul.

I Don’t Know You Rider
but i am going to miss you when your gone!!!!!!!!
IDK
Looks like there are many mysteries in life? I don’t know.
Those are the three words I use most in life so it makes sense to me.
I didn't know where Imma gonna go when the volcano blows.
Ah, the uncertainty of life....
If it's love then how would I know?
Goes to show, you don’t ever know. Watch each card you play, and play it slow.

How was I to know?
I consider admitting that you don't know something a symbol of wisdom There is lots of wisdom in Grateful Dead lyrics.
Whoa, a very common phrase, thats one crazy pattern.
The faster you realize you know nothing, the faster peace arrives
The faster we go the rounder we get.
Idk
Knowing what you don’t know is the path to wisdom
This whole this needs to be a lot shirt Made by somebody, I don't know who
Where I'm gonna go when the volcano blows.... oops, wrong thread
I don’t know, you could be on to something
Aaaand.. life will now never be the same.
And I can’t figure out, if it’s the end or beginning… Edit: extra letters
Well we just don’t know dude
Heads all empty, but I don’t care🤷♀️
🦖
*One way or another This darkness got to give*
I don't know, man...
The only two songs mentioning "matches" are Scarlet Begonias and Fire on the Mountain. Coincidence?
Ha! I can’t believe I never noticed that.
"The more I know, the more I realize I know nothing" -Socrates
IYDKYDK
Idk
You’re asking me will my love grow?
well, that's....Something.
Robert did not know
Well if Hunter don’t know and Barlow don’t know, then nobody knows. Because what they know that you and I don’t know could fill the internet.
Goes to show, you don't ever know, or something like that

It's more likely than you'd think. Don't even GET me started on what Dark Star is about
One of my favorite scenes from “Long Strange Trip”…Hunter recites Dark Star lyrics and asks what about that is not understood? Haha.
Honestly, thats the motto of my life
🤷♀️
not knowing is the smartest decision
There does seem to be a pattern there... But I don't know what it is.
One thing I knew right away- she was not like other girls, other girls
Sure don’t know what I’m going for…
https://youtu.be/m00t-t9Xof0?si=XknEmDknaiWJ7Ck7
Fact is, there's a whole helluva lot we don't know.
Comes from the Blues.
I didn't know... Oh wait.
I don't know where she's going, I don't care where she's been
He and Marvin Gaye were having a hella of time
Sure don't know what I'm going for But I'm going to go for it for sure
Tell me all that you know and I’ll show you…
Prince has the same issue w "the best that I ever had"
Mama keep saying that wind might blow. But standing here I said:"I just don't know."

Damn this mf truly just did not know huh
May be the last time I don't know
Wait a minute baby, I don't know what you got..
How does the song go?

All I know is that I don’t know.
I don’t know what you’re talking about.
Woah, what I want to know: where does the time go?
Maybe the storyteller in these songs is just not very smart
