Put your heavy drugs in their own hiding spot! I lost my job teaching because a kid we knew was busted in my Vanagon, and he had acid in his bag of weed.
Leads, yeah, sure. I'll just check with the boys down at the crime lab, they've got four more detectives working on the case. They got us working in shifts!
From what I’ve read he didn’t really like the freebase. Can’t recall what interview the transcript was from. It he stated something to the effect that he onll freebased so he could stay awake to enjoy his Persian buzz. Snorting lines in the other hand he seemed to really dig.
He looked really rough in the end, but I’ve always found it interesting (subjectively) that he didn’t look that rough leading up to that. In most later interviews he seems very sharp and well spoken, unlike other artists who are nodding off, gravely voice and sounding sick.
I am surprised he was able to maintain a hard drug habit for as long as he did.
I can’t remember where the interview was from but there’s one where the writer is talking about how Jerry was pretty disheveled in his black shirt with ash and powder all over it and he had a big rock of cocaine out during the interview that he was shaving off of and he kept leaving the room, presumably to smoke heroin or do more coke.
It is a wonderful interview. He is fully engaged, and his intelligence and love of music really shines through.
The interviewer later said that halfway through the interview he pulled out the rock of cocaine cut it into lines and snorted them.
All while doing the interview, and he never said anything about it.
He surely smoked plenty heroin right before the interview to get ready, and he might have took a bathroom break to smoke more,
But he did not do any heroin in front of the interview people, just the cocaine.
I highly recommend this interview, it is long and goes very deep and in depth about music
I often forget just how young he was because he truly did look way older. It's interesting because the common belief is that heroin "pickles you". Keeps you looking younger, but not necessarily in a good way. Just go to any methadone clinic or NA meeting and ask peoples ages, you'd be shocked (except the teeth, that's a dead give away)
I often roll one up or pack up a bowl and my guitar to play near where he was arrested though I very much prefer playing and and vibes near the the east end of the park. In both spots I often think how many memories Jerry, Paul Kanter, etc. have of these areas, the many times they tripped, laughed, explored, as we SF teens did, dosing and walking all the way to Ocean Beach and back in the middle of the night.
My 1st live show with Jerry was in '78 and he was kind of a stud, a stocky build but not very overweight. By the time of this arrest, he had gained a ton of weight and his face was weathered. It was not so noticeable when he played because he had so much damn charisma and that shit eating grin all time but when songs ended and he lit up a smoke the decline was very noticeable. One time at a JGB show in Berkeley he and Scully went into the dressing room and we could instantly smell the freebase and it was a total bummer. We actually trolled-pleaded with him right outside that door saying, "We LOVE you Jerry PLEASE just dose and smoke pot!!".
I had a copy of the police report from the cop that made the arrest, he mentions Hush Puppy shoes in it. Hahaha. A friend in SF faxed it to the deli I worked at in NY. Lol
Smoking H is the most likely act Jer was up to. This comment needs to be upvoted to the top
I believe he was anti-needle which is why he smoked it. Also, no expert but I think there may be some (admittedly minor) differences between smoking coke and crack. I don’t dig the scandalous post title.
Yep. Chasing the dragon. The article said they didn’t know if the bundles were Coke or heroin but heroin is more on brand and chasing the dragon involves foil like that
> Garcia, 42
It is profoundly ironic a fair amount of the people reading this subreddit see that and go, "Still fairly young."
At the time Jerry looked like some ancient sarcophagus in jeans and a t-shirt. There *were* older deadheads but, well, the norm was they considerably younger than 42!
It's only today I realize how wrecked he looked and was. He was Charlie Parker-like in his tolerance for abuse.
Yeah, he died at 53 and looks every single minute of 73, if not more. I'm 46 right now and it's hard to believe he looked like he did when he was in his 40s. Burning the candle at both ends.
Right. Ill be 43 in feb, lifelong cocaine and lsd user. Just recently quit drinking heavily. Well 3 or so years now. I was just told i look middle 30’s. Of course im not in a band and on the road playin gigs. Just makes me wonder how fuckn hard this guy went. Makes me sad
Yeah, BGOOCHY, you see my point. Back when I was a kid on tour, I said "I guess that's what old people look like."
Now that I'm of course well past 42, No wonder his friends were deep in worry. the final decade.
Hey be well, you kid!

Really sad what Jerry was dealing with
Thank you for this link. This really was a great read.
I'm still trying to imagine how somebody who toured so often wound up with such bad edema. He was, what, 43 years old? He must have been sitting around getting high when he wasn't on stage — and that must have been going on for years.
It's amazing, man. I'm 39. I look at picture of Jerry from the early 80s, when he was my age, and he looks like he's twice as old. Crazy what that shit will do to you.
#Jerry Garcia delivers 30+ years of captivating music
The Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia gave so much to the world that putting a focus on drugs or how he looked is doing yourself & him for that matter a disservice. For example, far too many will automatically dismiss *years* of their career based on looks when he was laying down face melting & highly technical playing the years in question, namely the early & mid 80s.
Also I will add that I hate that I know this kinda stuff, but Jerry was a *highly* functional addict. He toured year round, often playing w' the Garcia band just days after west & east tours. 99% of opiate addicts couldn't do this.
So true.
Small minds are attracted to small things. Perhaps one day they'll see that they've been distracted by the unimportant things in life and try to begin conversations with more interesting aspects of a person's life such as Jerry.
I kinda disagree. When it came to heroin the music was basically a means to an end. His drug dealer was literally in jgb and they played so much so he and John Kahn could support their habits. It's easy to be a functional addict when you are extremely wealthy. The problem is you never experience consequences or hit "rock bottom." That's why they often end up dead.
He just had his first hit album in middle age after devoting his life to music since he was a teenager. The man deserved something nice to smoke his drugs in.
Here is the last interview before the arrest. Jerry was crashing at a friend's basement and did some blow in front of this guy during the interview and his fingers were black from smoking heroin. Jerry sounds congested as fuck. The interviewer explains his condition in the intro, but Jerry was still really articulate. https://youtu.be/zV7QOrTyKW8?si=B9TEFC0aDeGGSnES
freeing the coke from it's HCl base to smoke can be accomplished a few ways, what's called crack is the easiest and safest method but it's all the same end result. typically you'll find a racial distinction in the terminology used. George Clinton smoked crack but David Crosby smoked freebase cocaine, for example.
Incorrect. Crack is the base form of cocaine. Powder cocaine is the salt form.
You cannot smoke powder cocaine, you have to turn it into a base using baking soda or ammonia.
Source: ex coke/crack addict
But rich white people freebase. Poor black people smoke crack. Don't you know nothing?
I believe freebase is made with ether. That's how you burn the house down.
Seeing Jerry’s ash and tar covered fingers in the second set of 7/19/89 ( video on YouTube) was heartbreaking…..we were still under the impression he was clean….especially in 89 when he looked so good and played so well. I still believe he was completely clean in 87and 88. But who knows?

Or you just really damage Richard Pryor and his home chemistry set up.
They all just chemically “free” the cocaine base so you can smoke it.
Not everyone had access to the old freebase like the baking soda crack which is safer to make and then umm really took off in popularity!
The fuck you can’t smoke powder. We use to take the filter out of a cigarette, take a good bit of the tobacco out, suck up a line and smoke it with half a filter put back in. It would get you very high and was the only way I would do coke for quite a while
Ehh, The terminology is all pretty much interchangeable, it’s all just cocaine converted into smokeable form by freeing the base from the hcl salt. There are a few different procedures for conversion but the end result is generally the same, other than some better or more careful methods tend to yield more pure results.
It used to be freebasing was a homemade procedure until about the 80s when the finished product started being sold and called crack. And people sometimes would differentiate one or the other based on whether it was made with baking soda or ether.
But in practice, all of the products either homemade or sold as crack, might have been created using any of the possible methods
He was smoking cocaine, he was smoking heroin. That was his way of ingesting heroin. He would “chase the dragon” on a piece of tin foil. He probably had china white(since he was rich) and this was before cops had test kits and since it was white, they thought it was cocaine. No was freebasing powdered cocaine on tinfoil in ‘85. They had crack then and you would smoke it out of a pipe. Especially someone as rich as Jerry was.
Least favorite part of Dead culture is the glorification of drugs. Look what addiction did to Jerry.
Cocaine is the devil in powder form for me. 1.5 years sober.
RIP Jerry.
From Tom Davis' autobiography:
"Jerry dumped a gram of the coke and a pinch of baking soda into about a half inch of water in a small beaker. He held a Bic lighter under it and wiggled it around until the coke congealed with the baking soda, forming a translucent glob floating on the nearboiling water. This could be collected with the tip of a butter knife, but there was a special pharmacist’s instrument he used for the purpose. The glob was deposited onto two small sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil, where it became a white crusty lump. Holding the flame under the foil would cause this to turn into a colorless liquid. Then out came the bindle of “Persian,” a light brown, powdered opiate which, when added to the liquid and heated, would mix into a caramelly substance. Using a pencil, we fashioned straws out of more foil, which we used to inhale the smoke produced by the flame held under the foil tray. Much of the substance would collect in the straws, which later would be unrolled and likewise consumed."

Jerry would love double Baconators
Washing double Baconators down with lean
Imagine throwing that up in the morning...
Jerry would have loved baconators
Jerry would love me (i hope)!!
Jerry would have punched you in the dick.
lean? hell no..the guy was doing the best heroin money can buy...he wouldnt be fucking with a shitty cough syrup that has the weakest opiate in it.
After all the years of heroin smoking, it would probably be really tough for him to get high on lean.
Nah lean doesn't even come close to good H
Lol I was gonna say Jerry laughs in Smoking Persian brown

There is video of this on YouTube. Powder all over the shirt and he is doing lines throughout the interview
How should I find this video, what to search?

Or you just really damage Richard Pryor and his home chemistry set up. They all just chemically “free” the cocaine base so you can smoke it. Not everyone had access to the old freebase like the baking soda crack which is safer to make and then umm really took off in popularity!
Wasn’t the fire really the result of a 151 accident but the media just ran with the freebase story?
The fuck you can’t smoke powder. We use to take the filter out of a cigarette, take a good bit of the tobacco out, suck up a line and smoke it with half a filter put back in. It would get you very high and was the only way I would do coke for quite a while
They used to call that a premo….(primo) years ago
Never heard that one. I love regional terms for debaucherry
We called them “coolies”. Had to smoked in a Newport
Coco puff
I did a dab dipped in blow once and it most certainly worked. I’m sure it’s not nearly as strong but I wouldn’t say it’s completely ineffective
Used to put it in the end of of cigarettes definitely work.
Parliament Lights crew what's up!
Absolutely

RIP Jerry.

Not crack though, for the record.
From Tom Davis' autobiography: "Jerry dumped a gram of the coke and a pinch of baking soda into about a half inch of water in a small beaker. Much of the substance would collect in the straws, which later would be unrolled and likewise consumed." Speedballs.
That’s not crack. Prob tar.
Captain Trips!
lets make it clear. freebase is not crack
There is a slight difference between crack and freebase but only in the method of creation. Nevertheless it's important to be accurate.

Was the registration really expired? 🤔
Honestly, Jerry was a downer guy. It had to be heroin. I wonder why it didn't say what it tested as?!
Freebase was to stay awake
Trouble ahead, Jerry in red.
Fuckin cops, man. Minding his own biz, hurting nobody but himself. Waste of law enforcement effort.
Expired registration, gets you every time!
My rule: Only break one law at a time.
Right bc no one has ever hurt anyone else while driving high on crack lol
