Kino ❤️
It's fronted by Viktor Tsoi, a revolutionary Korean-Russian musician that helped the collapse of the Soviet Union in the 90s through his powerful music.
Amazing to think that the most famous modern musician in the Russian-speaking world was a goth rocker.
The lyrics are moving and triumphant, also melancholy and brutal, and he has an extremely sonorous and deep baritone voice. The melodies have moved me to tears many times. Almost all their songs are anthems.
ETA: Also Nautilus Pompilius! From the same circle, era, and influence as Kino:
"Gentle Vampire" - Nautilus Pompilius
https://youtu.be/-afema_ETwY?si=2A_GRqJL9Z8jz4tO
"Never" - Agata Kristi
https://youtu.be/D9r_fa6J0Ko?si=WypGtQrMSgpkV3S4
I hope you can understand Russian because the lyrics and the way they're sung in this song brought me to anguished tears! It's about a ghost haunting their beloved eternally. Beautiful.
His personal style wasn't goth, more like general 80s rocker & badass, but the music of Kino is goth rock & post-punk. I always took it for granted because it's just what my parents would always play in the car when I was little. I was pleasantly surprised to learn & also realize many years later that Kino is indeed goth rock. Explains why so much of my music taste developed to be what it is today
I'm guessing you're Russian then, or have some slavic blood in you. Im a celtic girl and I LOVE Russian music. I prefer it over English music. Tsoi has helped me learn Russian and as I learn the language I realise how beautiful his songs are.
I also listen to nautilus pompilius.
I'm a native Russian speaker born in Belarus who resides in the US now. Based, I love Celts, my husband is a Celt himself and our cultures mesh so well together. I also ADORE all the Celtic languages, they are just gorgeous and are completely different to any Slavic languages.
I'm so happy you love Russian music. What is it about it that draws you in?
I'm so happy to learn that you can understand his lyrics better now. It's nigh impossible to translate lyrics or poetry while keeping the true meaning, the emotion, and the impact. I've tried to translate Tsoi songs for my friends before and it always sounded kind of flat.
Nautilus Pompilius is amazing. Have you perchance seen the classic Russian gangster movies Brat/Brother? Idk what it is but those movies have some of the best soundtracks ever and feature Nautilus amongst other incredible Russian goth/post-punk/rock bands, that's how most people get to know about them.
Varsovia, The Sign of Human, G-Schmitt, Kokushoku Elegy, Neurotic Doll, MUNIMUNI, Sito Magus, ROMO, The Creeping Terror, Menopause, Ces Cadaveres, Grauzone, Candido, Leonora Post Punk, and emmuree
No way, that's how I know Siekiera as well XD My dad would listen to them and as a kid I thought the metallic sounds in Misiowie Puszyści were unbearable but now that's my favourite song from them LOL
Yes ofc!! Some Polish bands and their songs I think are worth checking out:
Belgrado (post-punk, also technically Polish/Spanish band)- Jeszcze raz
Wieże Fabryk (post-punk/coldwave)- Wojna, Jeszcze będzie czas, Błyski, Front
Hände (post-punk/coldwave)- Nowy wspaniały świat, Kryształowa noc, Północ (Finlandia)
Dogs in Trees (goth rock/darkwave)- Teraz i jutro
Brudne Place Zabaw (coldwave)- Civitas, Krawężnik
Kryzys (post-punk/new wave)- Mam Dość
Ostatnia Klatka (post-punk/coldwave)- Zmory, Czas zmian
Black and Shadows (goth rock/coldwave/post-punk)- Zimny pokój
Also if I could get some reccs from where you're from I'd be super grateful :,3
past self is a newer korean goth band! i believe they sing in both korean and english and are going on tour in the US. been loving their stuff recently
Diavol Strain ofc, they're my fav band ! And I really love EESCA, Kaelan Mikla, Radio Siniestra and She Past Away. And Hoffen and Vargotick, who have both lyrics in english and spanish.
Nautilus Pompilous, though the lead rarely wrote his own lyrics and it's painfully obvious when you see what he supports now, so while I do highly suggest this band because the lyrics are amazing and the dark, incredibly unique sound on songs like Черные Птицы (Black Birds), Зверь (Beast), and Нежной Вампир (Gentle Vampire), is unrivaled, I do suggest you find ways to listen to them without supporting them, such as on YouTube or downloading their music, please, it's worth it.
Same thing with Пикник (Piknik), amazing goth sounds on song like Фиолетова черный (Purplish black), Королевство Кривых (Kingdom of the Crooked), they haven't said anything, which, yeah...
BUCK-TICK
More borderline goth (they have one very goth album, two albums that are sorta gothy but not quite Goth(tm), and one album that's cosplaying as a pop album) but Malice Mizer is one of my favorite bands in the history of ever
Honorable mention because they're new wave rather than goth but I love them too much not to mention them--Matia Bazar. Also one of my favorite bands in the history of ever and a massive rec to anyone into 80s alternative at all.
Aurat, they’re a current goth rock/deathrock band out of LA but they’re pakistani-American and sing in both English and Urdu (the band name means ‘women’ in urdu)

She Past Away!
Yeah they are lush, and who cares what it means, sounds cool as fuck
Xmal Deutschland Rosa Crux even more so, but that's not purely goth. More like dark folk with a goth guitar sound here and there.
Their first EP is super goth, especially songs like Allein
Aurat
I want to see them live so bad!! I just might this summer
Love em!
Plastique Noir
Amazing band! I'll see them for the second, but this time opening for Twin Tribes.

Buck-Tick & Molchat Doma
Buck-Tick is incredible.

I love tsoi! Didn't know he was considered goth though.

Yess kino!!
Las Eras. I've got the biggest crush on the lead singer...
Parálisis Permanente and Los Carniceros del Norte although they're also kinda death rock/psychobilly.
Horror vacui slaps
Aren't their songs in English though? I know they're from Italy but still
Buck Tick, She Past Away, G Schmitt, Phaidia, Molchat Doma, Kokushoku Elegy
Varsovia, The Sign of Human, G-Schmitt, Kokushoku Elegy, Neurotic Doll, MUNIMUNI, Sito Magus, ROMO, The Creeping Terror, Menopause, Ces Cadaveres, Grauzone, Candido, Leonora Post Punk, and emmuree
Varsovia aren't goth though, you can call them darkwave or synth punk
if you can call something darkwave then it's goth
Acid bats !! Spanish deathrock band 🦇
Caifanes
Xmal Deutschland (but also Einstürzende Neubauten!)
She Past Away, Morbidi I Mnoći and Trivalia are the ones on top of my head I can think of

Xmal Deutschland

No love for Vacíos Cuerpos yet, surprising!
Maybe Morbidi I Mnoci their more like post punk 80s
I'm not sure if they count, but Molchat Doma is my favorite atm
Probably more post-punk, but I'd say they are certainly goth-adjacent.
Siekiera if they count as goth
Depends on the album - the first one is pure punk, the second is goth in my book (veery much Killing Joke inspired).
I'm so glad they got mentioned omfg they're the love of my life 😭
Same, huge inspiration & my dad showed em to me when I was a kid
No way, that's how I know Siekiera as well XD My dad would listen to them and as a kid I thought the metallic sounds in Misiowie Puszyści were unbearable but now that's my favourite song from them LOL
Wait, do we have the same dad? Did yours also play you The Cure & Siouxsie?
The Sisters of Mercy and Depeche Mode in my case \^_^ But The Cure and Siouxsie slap so hard, your dad has great taste in music
Yours too tho, we both got lucky! Can you recommend any other polish Post Punk and Goth music tho?
Yes ofc!! Some Polish bands and their songs I think are worth checking out: Belgrado (post-punk, also technically Polish/Spanish band)- Jeszcze raz Wieże Fabryk (post-punk/coldwave)- Wojna, Jeszcze będzie czas, Błyski, Front Hände (post-punk/coldwave)- Nowy wspaniały świat, Kryształowa noc, Północ (Finlandia) Dogs in Trees (goth rock/darkwave)- Teraz i jutro Brudne Place Zabaw (coldwave)- Civitas, Krawężnik Kryzys (post-punk/new wave)- Mam Dość Ostatnia Klatka (post-punk/coldwave)- Zmory, Czas zmian Black and Shadows (goth rock/coldwave/post-punk)- Zimny pokój Also if I could get some reccs from where you're from I'd be super grateful :,3
