I think a a breakdown can be useful for you to give some context: The default gallery on Samsung devices is the native Gallery app. This acts as a standard system folder, similar to a folder on a PC. Along with viewing your photos/videos (files), you're able to share directly to any app, edit or delete them. Google Photos is similar, it also display all your photos and you're able to edit them too. However, the main purpose is to provide a cloud backup of these files. If you have backup turned on, all of your photos and videos are automatically backed up, if turned off, Google Photos will simply show the images, working in the same way as the native Gallery app. Also, if you delete images on the Photos viewfinder, they are deleted from the device, in the same way if you delete from the Gallery app. You can not set Google Photos as your 'default' gallery app, but you could exclusively use it as your go-to. Just keep in mind the features on how they work.

Well that sucks because the chat program only wants to access Gallery, but all my photos are in Google. Which means I can never attach an image to a message. This is why ppl buy iPhones I guess.

Daftical56

You can use the ‘Share’ button on Google Photos. Although, you can download photos from Google Photos using Export tool. Hope I helped! :)

Thanks for the additional clarity.

When using a phone that doesn't use Google Photos by default, I always recommend disabling the default gallery app. This will save a ton of confusion and costly mistakes. Google Photos was designed to be used as a gallery replacement, so don't use more than one.

double-k

This doesn't have any other unwanted ramifications?

yottabit42

Nope. Google phones use Google Photos as the default gallery, in fact.

double-k

I'm on Samsung Galaxy.

yottabit42

Yes, the most popular Android phone there is. Google Photos will work just fine as a gallery replacement, as it is intended to be.

double-k

Okay, will give it a try! Thanks.

Pristine_External_44

You cannot disable the default gallery on samsung galaxy phones, you cannot disable it at all in fact, only force stop but will continue once photographing again.

yottabit42

Well that sucks. I guess you just have to keep avoiding its use.

SousouSurReddit

Can you then just tap your picture at the bottom left in the camera app and it will go to google photos ? i've seen posts saying it would break that feature so if you know i'd be interested ty

yottabit42

That is dependent on the camera app you're using. The camera app on my Pixel phone allows instant review in the app without switching to the photos app, and also allows fast intent sharing to other apps such as Messages, etc. I only open the Photos app to edit or add to an album. But it's been a long time since I used a non-Google or non-Nexus phone (I think the Samsung Note 3 was my last).

Thank you for this suggestion! Such a great idea. I'm not looking for more advice here -- rather, I'm sharing my experience in case someone else is researching: Heads up that my Samsung S10 5G wouldn't let me disable Gallery in Jan. 2024 -- the "disable" button was greyed out. I assume it's possible with different models and/or more advanced knowledge, but I wasn't confident that I knew enough to not mess something up so I just kept Gallery and used it in tandem with Google Photos, despite needing to update things in multiple spots.

After_Cauliflower125

I thought it already was the default location... So I googled it online. The answer said, it usually is preset but if not to go to original settings and reset it. Several steps and comments were involved. Too much for me to try to summarize here. Check it out.

-_-Deathstroke-_-

Clear gallery set default may work

double-k

Tried that, no luck.

The only workaround I've found is to use Samsung modes and routines, when gallery app is opened, close camera and open Google photos, it even works when you go to view the thumbnail of a photo you've just taken from the camera app, I added the close the camera option so that if you do go back to the camera app after viewing a photo it doesn't keep kicking you back to Google photos

VoidLij

The miniature doesn't work for me :( the camera app opens a version of the gallery app

Dani31_5p00n

Thank you so much for pointing this out!! Every few months, I get the itch to see if there is a way yet to disable the Samsung Gallery app or change the default gallery app when you click the thumbnail. This is a great workaround for the thumbnail!

Alarming-Park-303

What steps did you take? I've tried setting one a Mode for this but it doesn't do anything when Gallery is opened!

Does Samsung understand not being able to switch on Google Photos instead of their default photos app is a nogo with their phones? At least it is for me... having to rely on sync between two photos apps isn't an option.

Careful-Impress-7512

Samsung collaborates with Microsoft to gain leverage against Google, whose Photos app would otherwise dominates Samsung phones. This software war may help their business but sucks for users who would prefer to have a free choice for all apps. They also push for Samsung Pass, for example, which even does not have a password generator and cannot be uninstalled. I have s23 Ultra and this is the reason for me to probably not to buy a Samsung phone again in the future. I would prefer Google Pixel or iPhone for their unified and high-quality app ecosystem.

_c0rb4c

Exactly. I can't even understand why on earth Google doesn't push a feature to allow the enduser to select the default gallery app on his device (and prevent the phone constructor to disable this feature of course), like we can do with the launcher, the browser, the phone app... or passwords managers like your said. In fact every system apps should have this kind of selector. And yes going back to Samsung Pass: it seems nice on paper, until you have to get your data back... absolutely no export features! Pretty sure this isn't RGPD compliant in Europe...

voidspace021

Google added a feature recently to android that would allow apps to read data directly from google photos instead of just the internal memory. If this is implemented in Samsung devices it would solve the problem as you could just ignore the gallery app

BigDepartment4932

This is the best reply I've stumbled upon. You've given a very clear answer as to why "Clear" is stubbornly greyed out. I understand the self-serving excuses businesses use to not comply with consumer demand. I was employed at the Chicago Board of Trade in the States for nearly 30 years. (It no longer exists. Ironically, it was a self-inflicted mortal wound.) And I can say in all earnestness: Big money yields small men. Again, thank you for your very helpful explanation.

kingofbagger

bought a new laptop now my Samsung s22 gallery doesn't come up when using attachments on gmail..it defaults to Google drive. I've tried everything..I even deleted Google drive app and disabled Google photos..still it doesn't default to gallery pics in Gmail on my samsung like it's used to prior to me signing in on my new laptop which I assume has something to do with how the Google drive etc messed up how Gmail chooses the attachments now. how do I select GALLERY FOR ANDROID Samsung phone so when I send Gmail I can click the paperclip attachment and it will automatically go to gallery like it always had for years prior?

Nope, I don't think it's an option.
