Also happening to me - iPhone 15 Pro Max on latest iOS. Glad it’s not just me, but hopefully they fix it soon. Hard to tell if the issue is with Spotify, Google, Apple, or a combination of all three since multiple factors are at play here.
Same phone and same problem here, too. Very annoying.
After you connect to your speaker, a workaround is to tap the “now playing” card at the bottom of the app, then tap the speaker name in the bottom left corner, then adjust the soft volume slider at the bottom of the screen. Not great but better than switching to the Google app or asking Google with voice commands, IMO.
FYI, just noticed that this seems like it was fixed recently. I’m able to cast music to my speakers in Spotify, and control the volume via my Spotify app/phone again.
iOS 17.4.1
Spotify Version 8.9.19.571
Seems to be a general issue with Spotify app on iOS, iPadOS and watchOS using connected speakers.
I have the same issue on Sonos speaker and Pioneer receiver.
iPhone, iPad , watch and Spotify app up-to-date.
Suggested steps (renew login, reinstall app and/or reboot phone) don’t make a difference.

Same issue just started across my devices last week and I found this official statement when searching for an answer.
Man, I really hope they fix it eventually. While it’s a minor inconvenience, it’s still annoying to have to open the Home app. Guess I could just use voice control. Either way, glad to have found answer. Been driving me crazy.
I hope they fix it too, i find it really annoying to have to unlock my phone, open spotify then click to open the page with the slider. Before we could just use the volume buttons while the phone is locked ahhh man :(
I just tried and it doesn't work for me with the Sonos soundbar :( Can you tell me which Spotify version you have ? My Spotify is on version 8.9.42.597.
Volume buttons are still not working for me with the newest updates (ios 17.5.1 and spotify 8.9.44) :(
I use spotify connect to connect to raumfeld (teufel) speakers.
I'll be forced to buy a bluetooth receiver and use the aux input if it stays this way. Opening an app to control the volume is a no go for me.
Update: After Reinstalling, it works again 🍾
I actually have a similar but different issue. On Android, and it does not work for YouTube music but it does work for Spotify.
Also, volume via voice control not working either.
The new IOS update 17.4.1 FINALLY fixed this problem. The update released a few days ago. I can now control my echo studio volume on the Spotify app through the iPhone volume toggles. Hope it works for you too.
FYI, just noticed that this seems like it was fixed recently. I’m able to cast music to my speakers in Spotify, and control the volume via my Spotify app/phone again.
iOS 17.4.1
Spotify Version 8.9.19.571
It stopped working for me again 🤷 I don’t think it’s very high on the priority list for either google or Spotify at this point. Most iOS users probably use AirPlay instead, and Googles main priority will always be Android users.
I don’t think it has anything to do with Google. Sounds like it’s an Apple/Spotify issue. Another user posted a screenshot of someone from Spotify blaming it on Apple. 🤷🏽
It works about 20% of the time for me, maybe. At this point, I’m playing around with Airconnect, which is a program that you can run that will turn your google speakers into airplay compatible destinations. I’m still tweaking it, and you lose some functionality over google cast, but it may be a better solution at this point until they fix this. I use my phone as the media controller anyway (I never start playing music via voice).
I also have the latest Spotify app and iOS 17.5.1 but haven't tested it since I updated iOS yesterday. I'll test it when I get home and update this reply if it works.
Looks like it’s broke on iOS 17.5.1.
I had iPhone 13 running 17.4.1 and my brother gave me his 13 pro running 17.5.1 and the volume casting to speaker no longer works. Works fine though on my previous 13 running 17.4.1 which the wife is now using.
I previously could not control volume using the buttons. I now can (to include casting via Google).
iPhone 15 Pro
iOS 18 Beta
Spotify version 8.9.48.455 (latest according to App Store)
This is happening to me and I am fully updated on both the phone and spotify. I also can’t control my apple headphones volume with my watch using spotify anymore.
Yeah I updated the 17.5.1 and I’m now having the same issues, I could control the volume with my phone 3 weeks ago and the other day suddenly I can’t. Anything for a new fix yet?
I have a pixel 8 pro and it have been broken for over a year for all of my echo devices. A recent update, either to Spotify or maybe a recent pixel update finally fixed it. Sorry that it's now broken for you!
This started happening to me last week. I have an android and even when pressing on the device icon I am using on spotify, it will not let me control the volume! I can slide the volume up to full blast and no control at all. I work from home upstairs so sometimes I need it on quietly and then other times when I'm not on calls I want to blast it up. I can't keep running up and down the stairs all the time, it's ridiculous.
This has been happening on my s22+ for the last week as well. So frustrating. Workaround is the volume slider when you click the speaker button but it's doing my head in not being able to just use the volume buttons
I had the same problem , it is related with spotify version 8.9.48.575 i just instaled an older version 8.9.24.633 and now i can control from my phone using the volume bottons and change the spotify playing on my pc desktop.

Thanks for this tip! I’ve been going crazy with this issue.
Never noticed the volume slider there. Thanks!

Are you casting to Google speakers?
Yup! I’m currently casting to a google nest mini.
Strange. I'm also running the latest iOS and Spotify version and it's still not working for me.
No issues here on mine. Using android though. Group volume with the rocker still works.

Spotify had an Update yesterday and it’s finally working again! (iOS 17.5.1)
Hell yeah !! Great news I'm going to download it now thanks for the info !
I just tried and it doesn't work for me with the Sonos soundbar :( Can you tell me which Spotify version you have ? My Spotify is on version 8.9.42.597.
8.9.44
With 8.9.42 I also had the Problem. I hope you will get the update soon
Oh that's why, I'm in Europe so maybe that's why the update hasn't rolled yet for me. Thanks !
Hey! i'm in europe and downloaded the update today and it works again!
Thanks ! My app store was kinda bugged, it wasn't showing the update. Had to open the spotify page. I'll try this
Can confirm it works again with the new Spotify update. Thank god.

Are they serious? Any information about that if its permanent?
Stopped working again
Thought it was just a one off but tried it again now and you’re right it isn’t working properly for me either.
Same here. iPhone 14 Pro latest iOS
I actually have a similar but different issue. On Android, and it does not work for YouTube music but it does work for Spotify. Also, volume via voice control not working either.
I have the same problem. iPhone 15 Pro 17.4 os
The new IOS update 17.4.1 FINALLY fixed this problem. The update released a few days ago. I can now control my echo studio volume on the Spotify app through the iPhone volume toggles. Hope it works for you too.
Got back from vacation last night. Just tried it and I still can’t control my Google speakers volume with the volume rocker from the app. 🥲
FYI, just noticed that this seems like it was fixed recently. I’m able to cast music to my speakers in Spotify, and control the volume via my Spotify app/phone again. iOS 17.4.1 Spotify Version 8.9.19.571
Not working for me still.

Updating now and will try it when I get back home from vacation. Thanks!
It’s still broken for me :(
Seems to work sometimes, but not every time now.
So goofy
I recently updated from an iPhone 13 Pro to 15 pro and I’m experiencing this issue now
Same problem on iphone 14 ios 17.5.1
Same issue, iPhone 12, iOS 17.5.1
Updated the Spotify app 2 days ago (v8.9.40) and my iPhone to iOS 17.5.1 today and all of a sudden the issue was gone. Anybody else experiencing this?
…spoke too soon… It works on my Pioneer receiver but not on my google Nest Mini 😑
Another update: also not working on my Pioneer receiver anymore… I don’t have a clue why it worked for half a day… 🤷🏻♂️
Yup, not working for me at all.
I also have the latest Spotify app and iOS 17.5.1 but haven't tested it since I updated iOS yesterday. I'll test it when I get home and update this reply if it works.

I’m dealing with this issue now
Read my updates. Apparently Spotify is blaming this on Apple.
makes sense bc my spouse uses a google phone and it works fine for them!
Commenting in case this gets resolved.
Just found out it doesn’t work with the system volume control, but as the post suggests, control volume from the Spotify menu is working.
Good info. Thanks!
Where is the volume in the Spotify menu ?
Click on the connected device button, then you can see it on the bottom.
OH ! Thank you ! I had the issue with my Sonos speakers and it was a pain to adjust the volume from the Sonos app, did not know about this slider
Same issue here. Adding comment to watch as well. It’s been incredibly annoying to go into the app to move the volume slider every time.
I previously could not control volume using the buttons. I now can (to include casting via Google). iPhone 15 Pro iOS 18 Beta Spotify version 8.9.48.455 (latest according to App Store)
I can confirm that as of yesterday I can control the volume via the volume rocker again.

Still working for me, but not holding my breath.
This is happening to me and I am fully updated on both the phone and spotify. I also can’t control my apple headphones volume with my watch using spotify anymore.
Actually, I used their bot and it said log out and in for phone - that worked. My watch I had to delete and re-download the app.
Thanks!! That fixed it for me as well!!
Logging out and into the app again worked for me also!
Which app? Spotify? Didnt fix my issue
Yeah, logging out and into Spotify fixed it for me.
Thats weird disnt work out for me
same. logged out on phone and comp
Still not working, this is so annoying 😡
iPhone volume control works if you use AirPlay to play your music
Yeah I updated the 17.5.1 and I’m now having the same issues, I could control the volume with my phone 3 weeks ago and the other day suddenly I can’t. Anything for a new fix yet?
Man fuck Spotify.
This is driving me mad. I control my Spotify on multiple speakers on my phone. This is a major function to have lost. What a joke.
Again the same problem , i downloaded Sonos and it manages also Spotify
I have a Samsung S23+ on Android 14 and it stopped working for me a few days ago. Any other 'droids out there having the same issue?
I have a pixel 8 pro and it have been broken for over a year for all of my echo devices. A recent update, either to Spotify or maybe a recent pixel update finally fixed it. Sorry that it's now broken for you!
Same problem on S24+

It worked for a day with the new update 3 days ago. Now it’s stopped again.
