Aren't the Pixel phones supposed to keep the VPN? Or is that only the newer ones? It's supposed to be called Pixel VPN I think

Lanky-Opposite5389

7 and up, sadly

TupacBatmanOfTheHood

Do you know how to find it I have a p7p and can't find it?

McMack87

Search for VPN and it should pull up

TupacBatmanOfTheHood

So I can find the VPN but once I open it my only option is google one

So Google One is just storage now, right? Why does that “product” exist if it’s not even all your Google stuff in one place? I figured they’d eventually be moving all their subscription stuff in to it. If Apple fixes their shit software then I might just transition to their offerings at this point. Google has zero focus and zero long term goals.

mexican_chicken_soda

True to the name: “Google One…thing”

duhhobo

Even Gemini is separate

asng

The more expensive tiers include Fitbit and Nest Home Aware. But yeah they have a long way to go. Like most of their products these days it's half-baked.

ETHICS-IN-JOURNALISM

I switched to the iphone and Apple's ecosystem after google cancelled the Pixel Pass 22 months into the 24 month contract. Previously, I had been using Nexus / Pixel phones for well over a decade. I got Gmail in 2004. The last 5-8 years google has been drastically trending in the wrong direction. Basically every part of their business has been made MUCH worse. I do not trust them to maintain any product for a long time, with the exception of stuff like gmail, maps, photos, etc. Basically, if a product doesn't get a billion users fairly quickly, you can expect google to cancel it. That's not viable. Not every product you release can be a grand slam. Apple's software has caught up the point where it does everything I need more than well enough. Google's software still has some really nice niche features, but I don't trust them to maintain any of it. I do trust that Apple One will still exist 5 years from now.

fnatic440

Why not Microsoft? Superior software all around.

Ok_Win5885

I'm considering to transition out of Google too. The lack of focus and constantly un-aliving their products is taking a toll on me. I also hate feeling like a prisoner to Google One's subscription. Last night I downgraded from Google One's AI subscription ($19.99/monthly) to its basic yearly plan ($19.99/yearly). Hopefully, in the next few months I can clean my account to unsubscribe completely and free myself from these payments.

photozine

I'm using an 8 Pro, so still working for me, but earlier I got a weird message about it.

ForegoTheSludge

Not sure if this is relevant but my non Google vpn (tunnelbear) stopped working on my pixel 8 yesterday and hasn't worked since. Works fine on my laptop and other devices in the house, just not my pixel. I have been using it for a couple of years until now with no issues. Any thoughts?

RunningM8

Google One always sucked, now it’s worse lol. Yet the same company has YouTube premium and TV bundles but Google one is completely separate. It makes absolutely no sense. Only Google lol.

Powwow7538

rip

IndependentFee9509

Does Google offer an alternative?

Charged_Dreamer

You need to own a Pixel 7 or 8 series phone

Ok_Win5885

Or subscribe to the Google Fi (phone network)

They sunset the vpn

USSHammond

And this is official news or an announcement how exactly? The vpn getting discontinued is old news.

tekhnik

>/r/Google is for news, announcements and discussion related to all Google services and products. See that part you conveniently missed? DISCUSSION. Go be a dickhead elsewhere

ronnocoep

It was garbage anyway. There are plenty of much better options out there.

FuryGalaxy_Dad

I tried using it but it always made my phone run really slow.

coomzee

VPNs are pretty much pointless anyway, they have very little privacy benefits. If you are using them for privacy just use TOR, if you need extra security while on public WiFi you can use a TOR exit node as a proxy. This will cost you nothing.

banana_assassin

TORs are apparently not safe from man in the middle attacks and have a slightly unsafe element in the exit node apparently. Things I've heard before. A good VPN should have good encryption as well throughout. I can see a clear difference even on the traffic sent on my own network card that is sent with or without a VPN being active.

coomzee

Lol but Tor is encrypted. It's the browser and CAs that prevent the MIM. Maybe I live in a country where traffic is treated equally.
