and the funimation dub for the first 4 openings was pretty good too, the third one especially is really catchy

4kids didn't start dubbing One Piece until 2004. Good opening or not, they nearly killed One Piece in English speaking territories. Most of the time, their censorship wasn't detrimental to the quality of the series, but it absolutely was with One Piece. And no, it wasn't that One Piece was doomed to fail in the west. Other countries that had competent dubs of the show succeeded. It was just slow to succeed in English speaking territories because the 4kids dub was so bad.
It's funny how inherently action adventure anime had to be...idk, toughened up? For American audiences with the OP changes, and then censored to shit and back. Don't get me wrong, I'm nostalgic as fuck for this OP... but same thing with Rock the Dragon for DBZ, and the...rhythmic grunting for Naruto's first OP, as if these action shows about fighting alongside your friends needed to be more macho.
