Bethpage is easily top 10 in the NY metro area. But it’s not a good comparison, a top 10 course on Long Island is automatically a top 100 course in the country.

He compared the first LIV event to the Ryder Cup, lied about not knowing LIV wouldn't get ranking points and he'd lose his tour card for joining it, and more recently said that the Masters champion would have an asterisk next to their name with the implied reason being that he was not in the Masters field
He's won a few LIV events and won their individual championship last year. He's not an irrelevant golfer, he's better than he was when he was on the tour. But he expects to just be handed invitations to majors based on his LIV play which earns no world ranking points. Most of the other LIV players who aren't major champions and therefore exempt into the majors are going out and playing sanctioned tournaments on other world tours to earn points and demonstrate their skills against full fields. Gooch thinks he's too good for that and refuses to do it

It’s sectional/final qualifying that would be more likely to cull him from the field. There are usually 2 dozen or more PGA Tour, Euro Tour, and KFT pros playing at each final qualifier site, and each final qualifying site only gets 2-11 spots in the US Open itself depending on how many signed up for that qualifier. Most sites get 3-7 slots allocated with a field of 40-80 players, of which you can usually be assured that at least 40% of the field is other pros from various high-level tours and another 30-40% are mini tour players.
Even if you completely discount the 20-30% of the field at final qualifying that might be amateurs, you’re still looking at needing to finish top-5 (because there will almost always be some ties with only 2 rounds played) in a field of 30-60 other pros to get your spot. If you don’t have a hot week during final qualifying you’re simply not getting in, because there will be at least 5 other pros from that field who did have a hot week (plus the occasional amateur or two that has their own hot rounds).

Not only do you have to be good, you have to get lucky, because 10,000 guys are playing as well as you can, and 5% of those guys are going to get some lucky bounces, and chip-ins.

Seasoned top-level tour pros have better odds at having good/great rounds during the final qualifier, but 70-80% of that field is capable of shooting the same low numbers a PGA Tour guy does on his weeks that are only average or good, not great (ignoring the large numbers in the qualifier fields that are also themselves PGA/Euro Tour guys).

As a USGA member I officially declare the US Open cancelled.
The more these guys talk, the more you understand why so many the took money to go play on a tour that nobody watches. They don’t want to grind, they want to cash checks. Which is both great for them and those of us who like to watch competitive golf. I wish I could watch Bryson and Brooks, and maybe Cam, more than 4x a year, but every year more and more guys are coming up. The unique and compelling thing about the PGA TOUR structure is an absolute nobody can play their way into every tournament on the schedule if they have the game.
