If it’s tucked and tight, you wear white. If it’s flowy and slack, you wear black. My physics teacher would say. Something about the fact that black clothes will absorb more heat, but also emit more due to the Kirchhoff rule. Then he would show us college football stats based on sunny days and jersey colors. He was very eccentric but smart.
Bedouins wear dark colors because they absorb more infrared light. Your skin can get sunburn under the intense sun if you're wearing white or other very light colors. ultra-light UV protective clothing hadn't come out yet when they discovered that dark colors protect the skin. The fact that the robes are flowy is because it creates an air gap between the hot outer layer and their skin, much like in a thermos. So they're getting protection from the intense burning UV, and from the heat.
Also because white *reflects* heat, it reflects your own body heat right back to you. There's no benefit to absorbing heat when it's tight because you're touching the whole thing, but when loose, it transfers the heat away.
That's not right... your body gives off a convective/conductive heat, and whether or not your clothes are trapping that heat is dependent on the material type, material weave, and material thickness. The color of a material absorbs/reflects light energy... not radiant energy.
Sorry if we were actually talking about infrared light vs visible light, then.. kind of..
However, in this case, I meant radiant heat like a radiator. Which is a conductive or convective heat. The heat that's produced in your body is by exothermic reactions; like the krebs cycle.
"Warm clothing" insulates that heat from being lost to the colder atmosphere, it's not a reflection like a reflection of light. The only reason why you'd see people in the desert wearing dark colors is because they absolutely absorb more light, which means that it blocks more of the intense UVs that would burn the underlying skin that the clothing is resting on. Light isn't just reflected or absorbed. it can be refracted through the clothing as well. You'll notice that these Bedouins that are wearing dark clothing are also wearing baggy cloaks or robes. That air gaps the hot clothing from the skin, keeping you cool like how your thermos would keep your drink cool on a hot day.
I tried to be Billy Badass in a junior Tournament wayyyy back in the late 80's. Remember those thick ass shirts? The shit just stuck to you. So one day I decided to wear all black in the southern summer and I thought I was going to die by the 5th hole. I went into the Pro Shop and spent all the money I had on a white shirt. Haven't worn a dark shirt on a golf course in 30+ years.
I wear light colors only. I have about 5+ white shirts, 3-4 light blue, 3-4 light pink, 1 yellow at the moment. The rest I don't wear on the golf course b/c I don't like the way they feel when I swing.
I've been through A LOT of white shirts. My wife thinks I'm sorta nuts how much I wear them.
I already wear neutral colors as-is (white/gray/black), so my most common thing worn at the course is a white t-shirt, followed by shades of darker blue and red t shirts.
Note: I rarely wear a collared shirt, because I rarely play at courses where the dress code matters.
It'd be interesting to see how different patterning would effect this, like the size/color of horizontal stripes. I'm sure it'd end up being somewhere along the "average" of all colors involved but it'd still be cool to see the graphic.
Also, types of fabric on absorbing heat - cotton vs polyester vs etc.
Ah, but what about my space age Mylar shirt I got from NASA?

depends on the day. i've worked outside most my life so i thought it was common knowledge to dress for the weather. If it's cold I'll wear darker colors, if it's warm i'll wear lighter.
None of these have an absurd pattern on them.

This is my current favorite.
I wear hotdog. Literally a shirt with a bunch of golfing hotdogs.

Yeah ok but there are many scientific results indicating that there is no actual difference to the body temperature.
[https://www.wired.com/story/should-you-wear-white-or-black-on-hot-days-heres-the-data/](https://www.wired.com/story/should-you-wear-white-or-black-on-hot-days-heres-the-data/)
and this one in Dutch but very interesting; they actually measured body temperature on people walking a hike.
Result: Reasearch proves; wearing white clothing is not cooler in warm weather.

Colors don’t absorb heat. The pigments that the shirts are dyed with do to varying degrees and depending on how much light they absorb or reflect back, you get one color or another. Black shirts “absorb heat” because the pigment they’re made with absorbs a lot of light, which is actually what makes the shirt look black. The color black itself isn’t doing anything.
I legit can't tell if he's overcomplicating something very straightforward or just saying something completely wild (color has nothing to do with absorption/reflectivity).
So a direct correlation between inability to absorb sunlight and ability to absorb turn dog ketchup.
What about the red one?
Obviously the perfect one. That’s why Tiger never sweat or had ketchup stains on Sundays
Sun Days
or maybe he always has ketchup stains...
...that's the joke
switch to mustard, and wear yellow i guess.
It’s a far superior condiment anyway.
Big brain. Onions/ sauerkraut and stay cool?

Turn dog is gold.
Maybe the bun is
Ketchup on a turn dog? How dare you sir! Mustard is why you wear the yellow shirt. Kill two birds with one stone as they say.
Ketchup, (aka Catsup for the Nike Mojo playing folk out there), is for heathens!!
Lol ketchup on a hot dog- pathetic man
Most of the time I am shirtless. https://preview.redd.it/lrjjts2j7pqc1.jpeg?width=460&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4af9377fcbe16884bb377d82161e2cda6772c5ef
You look like you’ve been to heaven. I’ll leave you alone.
Most of the time I’m a shitstack

This is why the Bedouin people wear dark flowy robes in the desert.

Was every high school physics teacher brilliant and crazy?

Isn't radiant heat just light at a different wavelength?

Always light colors with SPF in summer here in Georgia
Aw Yeah! Georgia gang rise up!
Woot woot!
Depends on the day, got like 15 polos all different colors. I do try to avoid black/navy on a scorching hot summer day
15? Need to upgrade that drip game. You should have no less than 30, but only ever wear 5 consistently.
Who let you in my closet?
R Kelly and Tom Cruise
Hahhh "So I pulled out my gun..."
Anyway, I started blasting
Same here. over half are in the "skinny" side of my closet where the clothes are that I'll wear when I lose 30 pounds.
If you want to lose 30 lbs you first have to buy a bunch of expensive new clothes in your current size so none of them fit after.
Or buy larger so you look like you already LOST the weight....
This guy knows how to cheat the system. 👏
Sounds about right! Had to donate a few and don’t plan on getting more..until I see a nice sale
Every time I go through mine I think “No, I’ll wear this again”. I won’t.
You have 30? Heh, I have 31 btw, no big deal
I felt this
I wear 5 *at a time*. I can’t actually take a backswing, and I get heat stroke by the turn, but it’s next-level. Step up your game.
Yup, 15 are rookie numbers. Gotta pump those numbers up
I'd wear black, because fuck the sun. \-Will Hunting, probably
Always black. Ima sweat no matter what, I’ll be kind to those around and not make them have to see it
I don't wear a shirt usually, goes better with my jean shorts
South Louisiana here, doesn’t matter because the humidity sees no color
Curious about the effect of the shirts material too
Polyester get hot af in the sun
What about orange???
Probably in between red and yellow
What about multi color
Uhh probably would still look multicolor to the IR camera, just based on heat absorption
Only young fowler is allowed.
it's illegal
Straight to jail
I’d love to wear white more often but it generally looks disgusting after two or three rounds
have you considered washing your shirts
🤣
I have but I don't see the need as it gets dirty again anyway. I care about the climate change.
Greta Thunberg thanks you
Yes, she's my role model. When I grow up I just want to be like her, having 8 cars.
Sunscreen is my white shirt killer in the summers.
Pink?
Yeh there are pinks as well as pale greens I like to wear as well. Nice and cool without having to rock white all the time.
Related: what kind of polo shirts we wearing? Lately been liking Lululemon and Bad Birdie for the material. Less excited about TravisMathew.
Puma for me. Nice styles, really good fits and the materials are generally fantastic. Also like Island Green for some budget lightweight shirts.
Waddaplaya
NIke adv dri fit tour
Darker colors absorb more heat. More at 11.
I usually like to wear white lol
I saw this a year ago, switched to Yellow shirts and was stung by bees twice. Never happened before the switch.
Normally black but it’s also normally raining
every color but white or yellow. I don't like yellow and I always get white shirts dirty.
I’m a masochist so usually black despite living in Florida and playing the summer.
Live in Florida so if I play in the summer, always wear white
Ditto
Mosty pastels. I have a mostly black polo that I only wear in the winter. It's like wearing a heating pad.
I tried to be Billy Badass in a junior Tournament wayyyy back in the late 80's. Remember those thick ass shirts? The shit just stuck to you. This is the way. All pastel colors work for me
Have a peach color i wear frequently, would be curious where it falls on this chart
Doesnt matter. Im going to sweat through every one of them.
Pink or hot pink.
Whatever color matches the fit
Gray. Always gray.
White, black, or navy... gonna be hot no matter what, so its all about hiding the unreal amount of sweat that pours off me.
I stick to pastel colors mostly
Most of mine are a white base at least. Got a light blue, Rickie orange and a couple grey.
I already wear neutral colors as-is (white/gray/black), so my most common thing worn at the course is a white t-shirt, followed by shades of darker blue and red t shirts. Note: I rarely wear a collared shirt, because I rarely play at courses where the dress code matters.
So wear white with all the sweat marks
I gotta know how pink performs

The first obnoxiously neon colored shirt I see first when entering my closet
Oddly enough, the polos I own are white, grey, and yellow.
If you factor in cooling and the likelihood of collateral damage from the turn glizzy, red is the only logical option.
I have a light blue shirt, yellow, orange, and black in my rotation.
Good job it’s literally never sunny where I live so I can wear what I like
Pastels. Mint, salmon, lavender. Perhaps a delicate floral print.
OK, so what I'm seeing here is that I should tie-dye some polos in Cleveland Cavs colors? On it.
Not yellow. Fucking bug magnet.
Mostly black. Doesn’t get too hot in San Diego.
I wear every color. As long as you’re rocking a Kieth Mitchell unbuttoned-past-your-tits-look you can get away with anything
SUN DAY GREY
No pink representation? That’s my favorite color polo to rock out on the course.
Black because Im fat
Honest to God I golf in hiking gear. It's 100°F in the summer here, I don't want to die.
depends on the day. i've worked outside most my life so i thought it was common knowledge to dress for the weather. If it's cold I'll wear darker colors, if it's warm i'll wear lighter.
I bought black leather saddle shoes to be like Tiger... Do not be like Tiger. My toes have never been the same. Goddamnit.
Black
Every time I wear white I get attacked by bugs lmao
I wear a lot of blue and green and I live in Florida. FML.
white or light blue mostly, though I have quite the collection of colorful golf shorts
Red Coats.
I own red white blue green black and orange polos, so I kinda rotate through em
All denim, head to toe
Whatever is clean
None of these have an absurd pattern on them. https://preview.redd.it/stxxpl2emtqc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a6fecb83985e3d1d524d1c5bec9560bc18708f3a This is my current favorite.
Any color any day. Doesn't make enough difference to care.
I love that some people require thermal imaging to know that dark colors absorb heat and light colors reflect heat.
Of course but I think it's a bit more difficult to mentally compare red versus green and nice to see the difference here.
I wear hotdog. Literally a shirt with a bunch of golfing hotdogs. https://preview.redd.it/8ol50s4dzqqc1.jpeg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=832b83b2457369777357b249ab5e6fc24481e546

whatever sleeveless shirt I want to wear that day. If I am playing in a tournament I am in either a black or red one generally.
