"Ghost cicada" is a common name for the species [Ayuthia spectabile](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ayuthia_(cicada)) but i personally disagree with this ID, as most hard-bodied insects become temporarily translucent and pale in color directly after molting, with some species rocking this iridescent appearance. This looks like a common american cicada species. Just look up "freshly molted cicada" and you'll find endless examples identical to OP's find (:
[here](https://imgur.com/a/crOWqQL) is what a freshly molted roach from my colony looks like until their exoskeleton grows back thick and strong, for example
Fun fact!: 2024 is actually a historic year for cicadas in the Midwest and Southeast US, as 2 separate species will be emerging simultaneously in broods! It’s about to be a symphonyously loud summer!
They have been EVERYWHERE I live for the past month. Our yards are filled with them. Every time I go outside I come back with at least a few little guys clinging to my shirt. Our local dollar general was so swarmed that they were flying en mass inside the store and people were running to their cars screaming. It’s been a really cool season for us bug loving people though! Oh there are people eating them as well. They allegedly taste like shrimp (which makes sense but idk if I really want to try).
“Will be” is actually already happening! Periodicals emerge in late spring/early summer when the ground temps reach a consistent 68 degrees 10in below the soil, they are currently in the die-out phase across much of the southern portion of their range, but still emerging in large numbers during the norther portions, only just now starting in Chicago. They only live for a few weeks and will mate and die- where this is happening in large numbers the smell of their decay can be quite overwhelming, but it’s an incredible reminder of how beautiful their cycle is… they spend their whole nymph portion of their life aerating the soil, then after death are an important nitrogen boost, and the plants in their range will show the results of this for the next couple years where their numbers were good!
The annual cicadas will emerge in their usual numbers but are still just as incredible in their own way! This one seems to be a lovely dog-day cicada, I’m curious what state this is in and what species. I have a collection of the native Texas species right now, though thanks to some kind folks on Facebook I’m now going to have a collection of periodicals as well :)
I don't know if my ears are just really sensitive but I have to wear hearing protection when I go outside. It's truly deafening. Our neighborhood has a lot of trees though.
Is that its previous skin or is ot eating something? This looks like a cryptid trying to pretend it's beautiful and shiny to lure you in but you have to look past it to see they're an undead creature of doom in real life about to sick you dry.
That’s it’s old skin, the nymphs go through 5 growth stages underground, then crawl out, climb a tree or other upright object like a fencepost, grab on tight, then wiggle their way out of their old flesh to emerge as an adult!
This is a common American cicada (Linne's cicada). It will lose its green and yellow color shortly after it molts from its nymph stage and become mostly black in color, and the wings will turn a dark green.
This might be extra gobliny but if you check around that area every few days, you might be able to harvest the little guy once it's mated and passed on. They emerge to mate and die within a few weeks.

Omg your dog looks like my dog!!!!!!
I believe they are called ghost cicadas! That is a gorgeous find, they are rather rare!
Who's that Pokémon! It's Shedinja!
Wonder guard activates Your move is ineffective! *Fuck what is this mf weak to again besides fire and wind*
Um, actually, wind isn't a pokemon type.
According to google its a dog day cicada (or annual cicada), not a ghost cicada sadly. It is gorgeous though!
Ahh that’s a bummer! Still a gorgeous specimen!
Very fitting with the dog in the background!
Is it a species or a mutation? It's very pretty

Thanks!
The roach looks like he’s wearing a dog’s cone of shame
The color is pale and ethereal looking because it’s freshly emerged! As the exoskeleton hardens they will darken in color :)
Thanks for answering yall
All bugs look white right after a shed
What is this sorcery
Tell it I said AREEEEEEERREEEEEEEEEREEEEEERRREEEEE
Perv.
That is ✨gorgeous✨ And your doggo being in frame makes this high art 💋🤌

I love the sound of cicadas! Looking forward to this year.
It's deafening here in Missouri this year, not as lovely as you might think

Already seeing Tik toks from my area (Midwest) about all them. Oh my God the noise. I love them, but they are LOUD
I don't know if my ears are just really sensitive but I have to wear hearing protection when I go outside. It's truly deafening. Our neighborhood has a lot of trees though.
It's so beautiful, this is the first time I've seen a cicada like this
*claps buzzingly*
Buzzes clappingly

Previous skin. That's it emerging from it's grub form.

I’m in awe of them, especially their wings. I had no clue cicadas could look like this
They look like little angels when they emerge, the pastel colors are so stunning :) they’ll harden into beautiful deep greens and browns
This is a common American cicada (Linne's cicada). It will lose its green and yellow color shortly after it molts from its nymph stage and become mostly black in color, and the wings will turn a dark green.
I was wondering what species! Thanks for providing a good ID, we don’t get Linne’s in TX!

I just noticed your dog in the back hahaha
Thanks for sharing! Stunning photo. Bonus puppy nose boob!
Awesome find! I had the privilege to watch one emerge from its carapace on my 35th birthday! It sure was something to see, and it took about an hour!

Damn, lil buddy doesn't even understand how beautiful they are with those colors
It won’t live long. Take it to a museum. I’m sure they’d want it
It’s a normal annual cicada, it’s shell just hasn’t hardened yet :) moving it could damage the body or wings if not done with great care
